2015 Hyundai Genesis coupe problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Genesis Coupe is a rear-wheel drive sports coupe from Hyundai Motor Company, first released on October 13, 2008, for the Korean market. It is Hyundai's first rear-wheel drive sports coupe, and shares its basic platform with the Hyundai Genesis luxury sedan.

The Genesis Coupe arrived in United States dealerships on February 26, 2009, as a 2010 model. Hyundai USA acting president and CEO John Krafcik described the Genesis Coupe as being designed "...to deliver a driving experience that challenges cars like the Infiniti G37."

With the launch of Genesis Motors as a standalone luxury brand, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe remained branded as a Hyundai and eventually was discontinued in 2016.

Common 2015 Hyundai Genesis coupe problems

The 2015 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is a four-passenger sport coupe that comes in three trim levels: base, R-Spec, and Ultimate. While the car is known for its responsive handling, spirited acceleration, and good value, there are some common problems that owners have reported.

One of the most common issues with the 2015 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is water leaks. The car's sunroof drains can become clogged, causing water to back up and leak into the car. The rear quarter windows can also leak water, and the taillight seals may not be sealed correctly, leading to water accumulation in the spare tire area. When the car is braked, the water can slide forward and drain down into the backseat and floor

Another common problem with the 2015 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is the theft system alarm sounding for no reason. This issue can be frustrating for owners, and it is not always easy to diagnose or fix.

The 2015 Hyundai Genesis Coupe also has some interior shortcomings. The rear seat is cramped, making it uncomfortable for adults to ride in the back.

The 2015 Hyundai Genesis Coupe faces stiff competition from other sport coupes in its class. While it offers plenty of performance and value, its unyielding ride in R-Spec or Ultimate trim and some interior shortcomings can make it less appealing to some buyers.

Overall, while the 2015 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is a capable sport coupe, it is not without its problems. Water leaks, a finicky theft system alarm, a cramped rear seat, and some interior shortcomings are all issues that owners have reported. However, with responsive handling, spirited acceleration, and good value, the car still has plenty to offer for those willing to overlook its flaws.

2023-09-22
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America
  • Park Out Side: 1
  • Park Out Side: 1
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2015 Elantra, Genesis Coupe, Sonata Hybrid, 2012-2015 Accent, Azera, Veloster, 2013-2015 Elantra Coupe, Santa Fe, 2014-2015 Equus, 2010-2012 Veracruz, 2010-2013 Tucson, 2015 Tucson Fuel Cell, and 2013 Santa Fe Sport vehicles. The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module may leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.
  • Consequence: An engine compartment fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the ABS fuse, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 10, 2024 through October 11, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 251.
2016-10-07
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America
  • Components: AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2010-2016 Genesis Coupe vehicles manufactured December 12, 2008, to June 11, 2016. The electrical harness connector for the front passenger seat Occupant Classification System (OCS) may dislodge when the seat is moved.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, the disconnected OCS would, by default, cause the first stage, and only the first stage, of the air bag to deploy, whether there is a child seat in the front seat and the bag should not deploy or if the crash is severe and both stages should deploy. Either scenario increases the risk of injury to the front seat occupant.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will secure the OCS connector to prevent it from disconnecting, free of charge. Parts are not currently available and a second letter will be sent to owners when parts are available. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 151.
2015-11-16
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America
  • Components: SUSPENSION:REAR
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Genesis Coupe vehicles manufactured December 28, 2011, to April 6, 2015, equipped with manual transmissions. In the affected vehicles, if the differential and the suspension rear crossmember were not properly aligned during vehicle assembly, the bolts that secure the differential may loosen.
  • Consequence: If the rear differential loosens from its mounting position, the driveshaft may disconnect from the differential, resulting in a loss of propulsion and an increased risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will verify the proper assembly of the differential, free of charge. The recall began on December 30, 2015. Owners may contact Hyundai's customer service at 1-855-671-3059. Hyundai's number for this recall is 135.

Negative 2015 Hyundai Genesis coupe car reviews

  1. Lance D'Amore 2025-03-01

The 2013 2.0T premium model may experience a rattling sound emanating from the turbo waste, which has been reported by several owners. Despite Hyundai's refusal to address the issue, it is important to note that this is not a normal occurrence. The loose washers on a bolt sound can be quite unpleasant to hear. It is unfortunate that some owners have had negative experiences with their vehicles, but it is important to note that this is not representative of all Hyundai models. It is always advisable to consult with a certified mechanic to address any issues with your vehicle.

  2. Markus Bruen 2025-01-12

You're in for a treat with this ride! It's beautiful, comfortable, and relatively inexpensive. However, there are a few issues with the transmission and waste gate design that can be a bit of a downer. After three thousand miles, you might notice some rattling from the waste gate and grinding from the transmission, which can be a bit concerning. Unfortunately, Hyundai claims that this is normal and won't take any action to address it. Despite this, it's still a great ride that you'll enjoy!

I purchased a 2013 Hyundai Genesis three years ago, after trading in my 350Z. Unfortunately, I encountered some issues with the engine, which stopped working at only 62k miles. Despite having some trouble with the warranty company, I am hopeful that I will be able to resolve the issue soon. I took great care of the car, using 10-30 weight during the summer and 5-30 in the winter, and only driving it on weekends, which explains the low mileage. While I have had some difficulties, I believe that the Genesis is still a great car, and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in purchasing one. Of course, it's always important to do your research and make an informed decision. Best of luck!

  4. Roger Lockman 2024-08-02

I recently purchased a 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe with a 6-speed manual transmission. Unfortunately, when I press the clutch, the car makes some unpleasant clanking and rattling noises. I took the car back to the dealership, but they informed me that this is normal. I even tried switching to a different car, but it had the same issue. Despite many complaints from customers, Hyundai does not recognize this as a problem. Overall, I am quite disappointed with this car and would not recommend it to others.

Positive 2015 Hyundai Genesis coupe car reviews

  1. Chaz Hamill 2025-05-12

I've owned both a 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 Premium and a 2014 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T Premium (manual). First and foremost, this car is a real head-turner. I wrapped mine in an Ocean Shimmer Blue vinyl wrap and people often stop in the street or even in the middle of a crosswalk to take pictures. The first thing I did was to upgrade the exhaust. The 3.8 had a much better exhaust note than the 2.0T, so I got rid of the first cat and put in straight pipes with two small resonators. The compliments have been pouring in ever since. However, I did recently receive a ticket for 'loud exhaust/no muffler', which I thought was completely ridiculous as it's not that loud, just a nice sound. Secondly, I replaced the air intake with a SRI, which sounds spectacular when accelerating and you can hear all of the air being sucked in. Right after the air intake, you obviously need a BOV. With the intake and BOV, riding down the street and hitting the gas, the blow off valve sounds amazing and people will literally turn their heads 90 degrees to see what is making that noise. Lastly, I recommend that every Genesis owner (mostly those with the turbos) tunes their car. It's expensive, but it's worth every penny. Tuning from BTR or SFR changes your car 100%. You think it was fast before? Wait until you have that new ECU inside. With 1:1 throttle response, the extra 60hp and 80tq makes this car faster than the 2013+ 3.8's. I found that the more I upgraded my Genesis with bolt-ons, the more turbo lag I got. At one point, I asked a 2010 3.8 to race from 0-100 and I took him from 1st into 2nd... once I went into second and shifted, the turbo lag felt like I slammed on the brakes and he bested me. After that, I tuned the car and it got rid of all that turbo lag and the car is now extremely linear. It revs to 7,200 RPM, has no governor, increased HP/TQ, better fuel economy, is tuned for 91 gasoline, has launch control, o2 sensor disabled, etc. This car is now a beast and I can confidently say that it's the best $1,000 I ever spent. There are many companies that offer a wide variety of mods/upgrades for your car. As the previous review mentioned, there is a whole community dedicated to Genesis cars. However, even without any modifications, the factory version of this car is still a peppy sports car that can turn heads and get you in trouble with the law. The premium model comes with a great sound system, including a factory subwoofer capable of shaking your mirrors. The power is there, but to really unlock its full potential, bolt-ons and a tune are necessary. Always tune on a separate ECU to avoid voiding your warranty if you need to take it in for repairs or maintenance. The pros of this car include a great sound system, decent power, and a huge community for modifications. Repairs are also relatively cheap, and the car gets decent gas mileage if driven normally. It is also reliable and, once fully modded, can beat BMW 300 series, Focus ST, Genesis V6s, Volkswagen, and more. The premium entertainment system is easy to use and very functional, with a decent-sized screen and navigation. The cons of this car include the factory tune not unleashing its full potential, too many bolt-ons without a tune leading to terrible turbo lag, and not enough headroom in the backseat for anyone over 5'6. The transmission could have been fine-tuned a bit more, and the handling in the snow is terrible even with excellent winter tires. The interior still has a lot of cheap plastic pieces, including the pedals, which could have been made with metal. The premium model should have come with a limited-slip differential, but instead, it is more expensive and only the R-Spec comes with it.Although the hood scoops may not be functional, they do add a nice touch to the car's appearance. Initially, the front end plastic may look cheap, but after a wrap, it can look really good. Overall, I would rate this car a 4/5. To fully unlock this car's potential, it is recommended to invest in upgrades such as BOV/SRI/EXHAUST/TUNE/ETC..., which can cost around $3,000. Once these upgrades are installed, the car becomes an incredible machine that will give you an exhilarating ride. Without the upgrades, the car may feel like it's lacking that extra giddy up. The transmission could also use some improvement. Additionally, the turbo lag without a tune can be quite significant. All in all, this is a great car, but there is still room for improvement.

  2. Daren Treutel 2025-05-09

Let's start with the entertainment system. Unfortunately, the baseline model doesn't come with an infotainment system, but it does have a basic radio CD aux iPod Bluetooth system. While it may not be the most advanced system out there, it gets the job done. The Bluetooth uses the older A2DP profile for music, which is fine for the average user. However, if you're an audiophile, you may notice some degradation at the high end from the compression. I personally prefer to use the aux to get the best sound from my phone, but the stock audio system actually sounds pretty good. It's factory amped, so it's got a fair amount of bump out of the existing speakers. It's adequate for everyday listening, but if you're into car audio, this may not be the car for you. Performance-wise, this car is stellar. The acceleration is great, whether you're starting from 0 or 60, and it's very responsive. The shocks are also very good, making for a very comfortable ride even when accelerating. While it may not throw you back in your seat, it's deceptively quick when driving it yourself. Enthusiasts may be a bit turned off by the perceived acceleration, but it's still a great car to drive. It's very easy to find yourself driving along at 90+ mph on Texas highways without even realizing it because the ride is butter smooth. The engine compartment is actually quite accessible. If you're planning to modify your car, the Genesis Coupe is a great choice. There is a huge online community dedicated to Genesis Coupes and modding, with lots of information to share. Overall, I'm very satisfied with my car and plan to keep it for a long time. I even bought the Hyundai extended warranty from the dealership - 10 years and 100,000 miles for the entire car, not just the powertrain. What a deal at $1300!

  3. Jimmy Trantow 2025-03-24

I've owned a 2009, 2011, and now the 2013 coupe, and I must say that this car is the best yet. It has great power, excellent build quality, and is very comfortable. The G37 has all the best features for thousands less, and it comes with a great warranty to boot. I find the stereo to be more than adequate (300 plus watts is more than enough for me), and the navigation and Bluetooth work great. If you're looking for a sports coupe that will leave some money in your bank account, then this is a no-brainer.

  4. Maxime Grimes 2025-03-22

This budget performance car is fantastic! The handling is superb, and despite being heavy for its class, it still manages to be quick. The car looks amazing, with only a couple of minor issues such as the non-functional hood vents and the plastic piece on the front bumper that looks a bit cheap. The interior is also great, with comfortable seats that hug you tight during sharp turns. The material is of nice quality, and even the back seats, which are expected to be small in a coupe sports car, are decent. The car sounds and looks great. If you're worried about reliability, don't be! According to the Genesis Coupe owners' community on http://gencoupe.com/, almost every owner expresses how reliable their Genesis Coupe has been, with many running the car to high miles with nothing but routine maintenance. Overall, I'm very impressed with this car!

  5. Melvin Hermiston 2025-02-16

This car is really impressive, from nose to tail. I used to own a 2008 Infiniti G37 Sport, and this car is a very close second to it, in some ways even better. The design is a real head-turner, and the interior is quite comfortable and spacious. The illumination, both inside and outside, is fantastic. Although the sound system could be improved, it still sounds good. The ride is decent, a little rough, and the road noise can be loud, but not overbearing. Compared to the G37, it feels way lighter. Most standard features are the same in both cars, but the Genesis has a little more. I'm leasing this car, and I'm excited to see how the Genesis Coupe progresses in the future. I'm extremely happy I picked this one.
