Hyundai Genesis coupe problems

The Hyundai Genesis Coupe is a rear-wheel drive sports coupe from Hyundai Motor Company, first released on October 13, 2008, for the Korean market. It is Hyundai's first rear-wheel drive sports coupe, and shares its basic platform with the Hyundai Genesis luxury sedan.
The Genesis Coupe arrived in United States dealerships on February 26, 2009, as a 2010 model. Hyundai USA acting president and CEO John Krafcik described the Genesis Coupe as being designed "...to deliver a driving experience that challenges cars like the Infiniti G37."
With the launch of Genesis Motors as a standalone luxury brand, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe remained branded as a Hyundai and eventually was discontinued in 2016.

Common Hyundai Genesis coupe problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, common problems with these cars include:
- Water Leaks: Owners have reported issues with water leaks in various areas of the car, such as sunroof drain lines, rear quarter windows, and taillight seals. Water leaks can lead to wet floors and trunk areas, potentially causing damage and discomfort.
- Paint Chipping and Flaking: A prevalent problem, especially with the 2013 model year, is paint chipping and flaking. This issue not only affects the aesthetics of the vehicle but can also lead to rust and further deterioration if not addressed promptly.
- AC Interior Squeaks: Some owners have experienced interior squeaks related to the air conditioning system. These noises can be bothersome and indicate underlying issues with the AC components that may require attention to prevent further problems.
- Acceleration Sound: Another reported problem is an acceleration sound, which could be indicative of issues with the engine or transmission. Unusual sounds during acceleration can signal mechanical issues that need to be diagnosed and repaired to ensure the car's optimal performance.
These common problems with the Hyundai Genesis Coupe cars highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues that arise to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

- Date Complaint: 2024-10-16
- VIN: KMHHT6KJ3GU
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: My 2016 Genesis coupe will spontaneously, randomly accelerate, full throttle. I can't stop it until I throw it into neutral. There doesn't seem to be any common factor for it to happen. More often it was on the start up but sometimes as I was driving in traffic. The incidents are usually far apart. I have nearly wrecked too many times, so I parked it for good until I find the solution. I won't sell it and cause another person to possibly wreck or injure others. The local Hyundai dealership kept it for two months and test drove it but the problem didn't reoccur. They said nothing showed on the diagnostic (that past history on the diagnostic may have been erased) and they found no incident reports on this. So now I don't have transportation as my old truck is in the shop with transmission issues. Prob from over use. I can't afford to buy a new car until I can sell this one. Anyone know anything? The different occurrence is thorough out 2023 until parked approx April 2024

Hyundai Genesis coupe 2010
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-15
- Date Complaint: 2023-07-06
- VIN: KMHHU6KH4AU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The brakes on my 2010 Genesis Coupe suddenly stopped working while on the freeway, luckily I was able to swerve into the carpool lane and avoid an accident. Upon taking it to Tuttle Click Hyundai I was told a master technician had to review it, which would cost $200 just to look at it. When the technician looked at the car, I was told it needed a new Brake Booster. Hyundai apparently no longer makes this part so the dealership had to locate an aftermarket replacement which costs about $1,100. I did note to the dealership that there was recalls on other 2010 Genesis cars for similar issues, but was told the recall was for the sedans, not the coupe and that they/Hyundai would not cover it. Upon installing the brake booster and bleeding the brakes, it was found that I also need a new ABS Module, which will cost up to $4,000 to find and install. Another user posted this same issue to the NHTSA in October 2022.

- Date Complaint: 2023-06-18
- VIN: KMHHT6KD3AU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The 2.0T engine failed and the vehicle is currently at Hyundai service department waiting on my warranty company to do an inspection of the engine. My safety was at risk as the engine failed during normal operation of the vehicle on a busy city street near a blind curve which other vehicles travel at high rates of speed. Hyundai Service department has confirmed the engine has failed which it needs to be replaced/rebuilt. Hyundai Service department has inspected the vehicle. Waiting on inspection from warranty company. There were no warning lights or symptoms prior to the engine failure. Thankfully I was not operating the vehicle on the expressway as I normally do on my way home which could have put me in a much more dangerous scenario when the engine failed. When the engine failed it started to effect other components in the vehicle, as I started to completely lose the ability to maneuver the vehicle putting myself in a dangerous situation.

- Date Complaint: 2022-10-03
- VIN: KMHHT6KD3AU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: On September 22, 2022 while traveling at about 65 mph on state highway 57 in CA, I came upon a sudden group of cars hitting their brakes and had to slam on my brakes but my 2010 Genesis Coupe did not stop and I had to swerve into an entrance lane on my right to avoid a serious collision. Fortunately there were no cars entering the highway on that entrance. I was then able to drive a short distance home. On May 26, 2022 I had my car serviced including the brakes by Service Auto Care and my car gave me no brake problems until this incident. On September 23 I brought my Genesis Coupe to Service Auto and explained what happened. The brakes worked fine on the way to the shop. They tested the brakes and said that the ABS module was defective but it was just put under a 15 year extended warranty by Hyundai on May 19, 2022 and to take it to the closest dealer. The dealer, Russell Westbrook Hyundai of Anaheim told me only the sedan was covered. This dangerous defect could occur at any time and cause a severe accident. I hope this report is helpful to the NHTSA and the defective part is replaced without charge. The dealership charged me $205 for an estimate, then wanted $2200 to re-do the brakes and then approximately $4000 to replace the ABS module. I have documents to back up everything I have presented.

I must admit, I used to be quite particular about cars. If you had told me five years ago that I would end up buying a Hyundai, I would have found it hard to believe. I'm also known for getting bored with my cars after about 18 months. However, I've now had my Genesis for two and a half years and I love it just as much, if not more, than the day I bought it! It's surprisingly nimble for a car of its size and handles similarly to my old 350-Z, but without the twitchiness that American muscle cars tend to have. It's definitely quick and very comfortable, and best of all, it's been extremely reliable! The only downside is that people stop me everywhere I go to look at it and ask me all about it, leaving noseprints on the windows!

I've owned both a 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 Premium and a 2014 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T Premium (manual). First and foremost, this car is a real head-turner. I wrapped mine in an Ocean Shimmer Blue vinyl wrap and people often stop in the street or even in the middle of a crosswalk to take pictures. The first thing I did was to upgrade the exhaust. The 3.8 had a much better exhaust note than the 2.0T, so I got rid of the first cat and put in straight pipes with two small resonators. The compliments have been pouring in ever since. However, I did recently receive a ticket for 'loud exhaust/no muffler', which I thought was completely ridiculous as it's not that loud, just a nice sound. Secondly, I replaced the air intake with a SRI, which sounds spectacular when accelerating and you can hear all of the air being sucked in. Right after the air intake, you obviously need a BOV. With the intake and BOV, riding down the street and hitting the gas, the blow off valve sounds amazing and people will literally turn their heads 90 degrees to see what is making that noise. Lastly, I recommend that every Genesis owner (mostly those with the turbos) tunes their car. It's expensive, but it's worth every penny. Tuning from BTR or SFR changes your car 100%. You think it was fast before? Wait until you have that new ECU inside. With 1:1 throttle response, the extra 60hp and 80tq makes this car faster than the 2013+ 3.8's. I found that the more I upgraded my Genesis with bolt-ons, the more turbo lag I got. At one point, I asked a 2010 3.8 to race from 0-100 and I took him from 1st into 2nd... once I went into second and shifted, the turbo lag felt like I slammed on the brakes and he bested me. After that, I tuned the car and it got rid of all that turbo lag and the car is now extremely linear. It revs to 7,200 RPM, has no governor, increased HP/TQ, better fuel economy, is tuned for 91 gasoline, has launch control, o2 sensor disabled, etc. This car is now a beast and I can confidently say that it's the best $1,000 I ever spent. There are many companies that offer a wide variety of mods/upgrades for your car. As the previous review mentioned, there is a whole community dedicated to Genesis cars. However, even without any modifications, the factory version of this car is still a peppy sports car that can turn heads and get you in trouble with the law. The premium model comes with a great sound system, including a factory subwoofer capable of shaking your mirrors. The power is there, but to really unlock its full potential, bolt-ons and a tune are necessary. Always tune on a separate ECU to avoid voiding your warranty if you need to take it in for repairs or maintenance. The pros of this car include a great sound system, decent power, and a huge community for modifications. Repairs are also relatively cheap, and the car gets decent gas mileage if driven normally. It is also reliable and, once fully modded, can beat BMW 300 series, Focus ST, Genesis V6s, Volkswagen, and more. The premium entertainment system is easy to use and very functional, with a decent-sized screen and navigation. The cons of this car include the factory tune not unleashing its full potential, too many bolt-ons without a tune leading to terrible turbo lag, and not enough headroom in the backseat for anyone over 5'6. The transmission could have been fine-tuned a bit more, and the handling in the snow is terrible even with excellent winter tires. The interior still has a lot of cheap plastic pieces, including the pedals, which could have been made with metal. The premium model should have come with a limited-slip differential, but instead, it is more expensive and only the R-Spec comes with it.Although the hood scoops may not be functional, they do add a nice touch to the car's appearance. Initially, the front end plastic may look cheap, but after a wrap, it can look really good. Overall, I would rate this car a 4/5. To fully unlock this car's potential, it is recommended to invest in upgrades such as BOV/SRI/EXHAUST/TUNE/ETC..., which can cost around $3,000. Once these upgrades are installed, the car becomes an incredible machine that will give you an exhilarating ride. Without the upgrades, the car may feel like it's lacking that extra giddy up. The transmission could also use some improvement. Additionally, the turbo lag without a tune can be quite significant. All in all, this is a great car, but there is still room for improvement.

Let's start with the entertainment system. Unfortunately, the baseline model doesn't come with an infotainment system, but it does have a basic radio CD aux iPod Bluetooth system. While it may not be the most advanced system out there, it gets the job done. The Bluetooth uses the older A2DP profile for music, which is fine for the average user. However, if you're an audiophile, you may notice some degradation at the high end from the compression. I personally prefer to use the aux to get the best sound from my phone, but the stock audio system actually sounds pretty good. It's factory amped, so it's got a fair amount of bump out of the existing speakers. It's adequate for everyday listening, but if you're into car audio, this may not be the car for you. Performance-wise, this car is stellar. The acceleration is great, whether you're starting from 0 or 60, and it's very responsive. The shocks are also very good, making for a very comfortable ride even when accelerating. While it may not throw you back in your seat, it's deceptively quick when driving it yourself. Enthusiasts may be a bit turned off by the perceived acceleration, but it's still a great car to drive. It's very easy to find yourself driving along at 90+ mph on Texas highways without even realizing it because the ride is butter smooth. The engine compartment is actually quite accessible. If you're planning to modify your car, the Genesis Coupe is a great choice. There is a huge online community dedicated to Genesis Coupes and modding, with lots of information to share. Overall, I'm very satisfied with my car and plan to keep it for a long time. I even bought the Hyundai extended warranty from the dealership - 10 years and 100,000 miles for the entire car, not just the powertrain. What a deal at $1300!

I rarely write reviews, but I felt compelled to write one for the 2013 Genesis 2.0T. I've noticed a lot of mixed reviews, especially for the 2.0T. However, I find it to be an extremely fun car for the price of 25k. The power from the 4 banger is more than adequate if you're not an enthusiast or a tuner. The car receives a lot of looks, and I love the fact that it's not a common car on the road yet, which gives you a sense of exclusivity. The handling is good and can take corners relatively well, but by no means is it on the same level as an FRS/BRZ. I've seen a lot of concerns and complaints about the wastegate on the turbo rattling, but my Genesis has about 2500 miles with no issues so far (knocks on every piece of wood known to mankind). Overall, I'm pleased.

The 2013 2.0T premium model may experience a rattling sound emanating from the turbo waste, which has been reported by several owners. Despite Hyundai's refusal to address the issue, it is important to note that this is not a normal occurrence. The loose washers on a bolt sound can be quite unpleasant to hear. It is unfortunate that some owners have had negative experiences with their vehicles, but it is important to note that this is not representative of all Hyundai models. It is always advisable to consult with a certified mechanic to address any issues with your vehicle.

This car was my first brand new car and I owned it for a year and one month. Unfortunately, I have decided to trade it in due to some issues I faced. Within the first month, the back tail light had a small hole and water was getting in, but it was replaced. At about 10 months, the driver window rotator burned out and I had to get that replaced as well. Lastly, while driving back from a road-trip, I heard a 'helicopter noise' and realized that the small backseat window had flown off! It had literally de-glued and flew off the car in the middle of the highway! Despite all these issues, I really loved the car :( without all this.

You're in for a treat with this ride! It's beautiful, comfortable, and relatively inexpensive. However, there are a few issues with the transmission and waste gate design that can be a bit of a downer. After three thousand miles, you might notice some rattling from the waste gate and grinding from the transmission, which can be a bit concerning. Unfortunately, Hyundai claims that this is normal and won't take any action to fix it. Despite this, it's still a great ride that you'll enjoy!

Hello everyone, I just wanted to share my experience with this car. I absolutely love it, but unfortunately, I recently had an issue with the Transmission Pan. Despite it being made of plastic, the cost to replace it was unexpectedly high, and the warranty did not cover it. I was frustrated and had to dip into my savings to pay the $1238.00 bill. I hope this information helps others who may encounter a similar situation.

The car is certainly eye-catching and enjoyable to drive, but unfortunately, I have experienced several issues with it. Specifically, I have had multiple transmission problems, including a total replacement at only 4200 miles. Additionally, the traction control can be unreliable, and the Bluetooth radio is not very user-friendly, taking up to 15 minutes to sync and allow calls. The paint on the hood also required some attention due to its softness, and the speedometer is not always accurate. Despite my attempts to address these issues with Hyundai, they have not been fully resolved. Overall, I would not recommend this vehicle, and I am currently pursuing legal action under the lemon law.
