The Hyundai Genesis Coupe is a rear-wheel drive sports coupe from Hyundai Motor Company, first released on October 13, 2008, for the Korean market. It is Hyundai's first rear-wheel drive sports coupe, and shares its basic platform with the Hyundai Genesis luxury sedan.

The Genesis Coupe arrived in United States dealerships on February 26, 2009, as a 2010 model. Hyundai USA acting president and CEO John Krafcik described the Genesis Coupe as being designed "...to deliver a driving experience that challenges cars like the Infiniti G37."

With the launch of Genesis Motors as a standalone luxury brand, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe remained branded as a Hyundai and eventually was discontinued in 2016.

Common Hyundai Genesis coupe problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, common problems with these cars include:

  1. Water Leaks: Owners have reported issues with water leaks in various areas of the car, such as sunroof drain lines, rear quarter windows, and taillight seals. Water leaks can lead to wet floors and trunk areas, potentially causing damage and discomfort.
  2. Paint Chipping and Flaking: A prevalent problem, especially with the 2013 model year, is paint chipping and flaking. This issue not only affects the aesthetics of the vehicle but can also lead to rust and further deterioration if not addressed promptly.
  3. AC Interior Squeaks: Some owners have experienced interior squeaks related to the air conditioning system. These noises can be bothersome and indicate underlying issues with the AC components that may require attention to prevent further problems.
  4. Acceleration Sound: Another reported problem is an acceleration sound, which could be indicative of issues with the engine or transmission. Unusual sounds during acceleration can signal mechanical issues that need to be diagnosed and repaired to ensure the car's optimal performance.

These common problems with the Hyundai Genesis Coupe cars highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues that arise to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-01
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-16
  • VIN: KMHHT6KJ3GU
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My 2016 Genesis coupe will spontaneously, randomly accelerate, full throttle. I can't stop it until I throw it into neutral. There doesn't seem to be any common factor for it to happen. More often it was on the start up but sometimes as I was driving in traffic. The incidents are usually far apart. I have nearly wrecked too many times, so I parked it for good until I find the solution. I won't sell it and cause another person to possibly wreck or injure others. The local Hyundai dealership kept it for two months and test drove it but the problem didn't reoccur. They said nothing showed on the diagnostic (that past history on the diagnostic may have been erased) and they found no incident reports on this. So now I don't have transportation as my old truck is in the shop with transmission issues. Prob from over use. I can't afford to buy a new car until I can sell this one. Anyone know anything? The different occurrence is thorough out 2023 until parked approx April 2024

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-15
  • Date Complaint: 2023-07-06
  • VIN: KMHHU6KH4AU
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The brakes on my 2010 Genesis Coupe suddenly stopped working while on the freeway, luckily I was able to swerve into the carpool lane and avoid an accident. Upon taking it to Tuttle Click Hyundai I was told a master technician had to review it, which would cost $200 just to look at it. When the technician looked at the car, I was told it needed a new Brake Booster. Hyundai apparently no longer makes this part so the dealership had to locate an aftermarket replacement which costs about $1,100. I did note to the dealership that there was recalls on other 2010 Genesis cars for similar issues, but was told the recall was for the sedans, not the coupe and that they/Hyundai would not cover it. Upon installing the brake booster and bleeding the brakes, it was found that I also need a new ABS Module, which will cost up to $4,000 to find and install. Another user posted this same issue to the NHTSA in October 2022.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-08
  • Date Complaint: 2023-06-18
  • VIN: KMHHT6KD3AU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The 2.0T engine failed and the vehicle is currently at Hyundai service department waiting on my warranty company to do an inspection of the engine. My safety was at risk as the engine failed during normal operation of the vehicle on a busy city street near a blind curve which other vehicles travel at high rates of speed. Hyundai Service department has confirmed the engine has failed which it needs to be replaced/rebuilt. Hyundai Service department has inspected the vehicle. Waiting on inspection from warranty company. There were no warning lights or symptoms prior to the engine failure. Thankfully I was not operating the vehicle on the expressway as I normally do on my way home which could have put me in a much more dangerous scenario when the engine failed. When the engine failed it started to effect other components in the vehicle, as I started to completely lose the ability to maneuver the vehicle putting myself in a dangerous situation.

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-22
  • Date Complaint: 2022-10-03
  • VIN: KMHHT6KD3AU
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: On September 22, 2022 while traveling at about 65 mph on state highway 57 in CA, I came upon a sudden group of cars hitting their brakes and had to slam on my brakes but my 2010 Genesis Coupe did not stop and I had to swerve into an entrance lane on my right to avoid a serious collision. Fortunately there were no cars entering the highway on that entrance. I was then able to drive a short distance home. On May 26, 2022 I had my car serviced including the brakes by Service Auto Care and my car gave me no brake problems until this incident. On September 23 I brought my Genesis Coupe to Service Auto and explained what happened. The brakes worked fine on the way to the shop. They tested the brakes and said that the ABS module was defective but it was just put under a 15 year extended warranty by Hyundai on May 19, 2022 and to take it to the closest dealer. The dealer, Russell Westbrook Hyundai of Anaheim told me only the sedan was covered. This dangerous defect could occur at any time and cause a severe accident. I hope this report is helpful to the NHTSA and the defective part is replaced without charge. The dealership charged me $205 for an estimate, then wanted $2200 to re-do the brakes and then approximately $4000 to replace the ABS module. I have documents to back up everything I have presented.

Latest negative Hyundai Genesis coupe car reviews

  1. Timmothy Runolfsdottir 2025-02-14

    Vehicle year: 2010

I really like the style of this car, as do many others. However, I have experienced some computer/electrical issues with my particular car. I have had to replace the radio twice, the amplifier once, the driver door button twice, and the push button start occasionally has an 'interrupt' in the brake connect that prevented the car from starting several times. While these may seem like minor issues, I am concerned that the computer/electrical system may be damaging other components in the car. I am worried about what might happen next. I have heard from another owner that his traction control seized and caused him to have an accident. Hyundai replaced his car, but the new one also has some issues. Dealing with electrical issues can be frustrating, but I hope that the manufacturer can address these problems soon.

You're in for a treat with this ride! It's beautiful, comfortable, and relatively inexpensive. However, there are a few issues with the transmission and waste gate design that can be a bit of a downer. After three thousand miles, you might notice some rattling from the waste gate and grinding from the transmission, which can be a bit concerning. Unfortunately, Hyundai claims that this is normal and won't take any action to address it. Despite this, the ride is still a great value and a joy to be in.

  4. Perry Romaguera 2025-01-04

    Vehicle year: 2016

This car is a great purchase, with fantastic power, great sounds, and high performance, especially for the price. The sport seats are very comfortable, and the suspension, while stiff, still provides a comfortable ride. The rear seats fold down, which is a huge plus. However, I must report that after one year of ownership, the manual transmission has proven to be problematic due to poor design. The synchronizer rings cause grinding shifts, and the shifter rattles incessantly. I recommend getting the automatic version of this car. If you do choose the manual, make sure you have a warranty and expect to replace it around 60k miles. Overall, this car is a great choice for those looking for a powerful and fun ride.

  5. Brock Moore 2024-11-23

    Vehicle year: 2010

Although there are some positives, such as its speed, I found the comfort to be lacking. This was my main complaint, as I had to keep changing my position after just 4 hours. Additionally, the side support was poor and the gas mileage was not as good as I had hoped, with the best I could achieve being 28 mpg on the highway. When compared to a V6 Accord or Camry, which can provide better performance and above 32 mpg, it is clear that the motor is not very efficient. Perhaps I should have bought a V6 Accord Coupe instead. While I initially thought it was quick, I was surprised when a Mini Cooper S was able to catch up to me at full throttle. Overall, it serves its purpose as a daily commuting vehicle.

Latest positive Hyundai Genesis coupe car reviews

  1. Marquis Sawayn 2025-02-21

    Vehicle year: 2010

I must admit, I used to be quite particular about cars. If you had told me five years ago that I would end up buying a Hyundai, I would have found it hard to believe. I'm also known for getting bored with my cars after about 18 months. However, I've now had my Genesis for two and a half years and I love it just as much, if not more, than the day I bought it! It's surprisingly nimble for a car of its size and handles similarly to my old 350-Z, but without the twitchiness that American muscle cars tend to have. It's definitely quick and very comfortable, and best of all, it's been extremely reliable! The only downside is that people stop me everywhere I go to look at it and ask me all about it, leaving noseprints on the windows!

  2. Melvin Hermiston 2025-02-16

    Vehicle year: 2015

This car is really impressive, from nose to tail. I used to own a 2008 Infiniti G37 Sport, and this car is a very close second to it, in some ways even better. The design is a real head-turner, and the interior is quite comfortable and spacious. The illumination, both inside and outside, is fantastic. Although the sound system could be improved, it still sounds good. The ride is decent, a little rough, and the road noise can be loud, but not overbearing. Compared to the G37, it feels way lighter. Most standard features are the same in both cars, but the Genesis has a little more. I'm leasing this car, and I'm excited to see how the Genesis Coupe progresses in the future. I'm extremely happy I picked this one.

  3. Benedict Russel 2025-02-13

    Vehicle year: 2014

I bought this car brand new in June of 2012 and have not had a single issue with it. Despite putting a little over 80000 miles on it, it is still going strong. Although there are some annoying rattles in the interior, both the exterior paint and interior are holding up exceptionally well. It gets great gas mileage and is pretty comfortable for road trips, even for my 6'2 and 230 lb frame. Overall, I think it was worth the money.

  4. Zack Dicki 2025-02-12

    Vehicle year: 2011

I've been driving my car for almost two years now and I absolutely love it! The ride is acceptable, the handling is very good, and the power is phenomenal. I haven't had any issues with it and the build quality is quite good. While the sat nav is next to useless due to outdated maps, the iPod and Bluetooth connectivity are fantastic, although the interface could use some improvement. The Infinity sound system is also fantastic and maintenance is cheap. However, I do have two formal complaints. Firstly, the traction control is absolutely horrible as it allows for zero tire slip, which is very safe but not very fun. It can practically put your head through the windshield when it kicks on, but if you take it off, you'll end up going backwards. Secondly, the exhaust sounds like it came off an Elantra, which is a bit disappointing considering I'm in a big V6 sports car. Let's hope they can improve that in future models!

  5. Chandler Mosciski 2025-02-12

    Vehicle year: 2012

This is a fantastic first purchase! On the used market, it's hard to find a better value than these cars. You get so much for so little! The interior is well laid out, and while some material quality is questionable (such as the cheap leather), most of the plastics are soft touch or have a rubber coating. In my opinion, the exterior is gorgeous. The power plant under the hood is great and gives other cars in this price range a run for their money. The only real issue is the 6-speed transmission, which can feel a bit cheap and clunky. However, can you live with it daily? For me, the answer is yes. The total value outweighs this one problem. The seats hold you in place very well and feel nice for the price point.
