The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is a mid-size SUV produced by the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors using the Pajero nameplate since 1996 that has spanned over three generations and based on the Triton pickup truck. Mitsubishi has formerly used the Mitsubishi Challenger (Japanese: 三菱・チャレンジャー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Charenjā) name in Japan and some international markets, but since the third generation, the Pajero Sport/Montero Sport/Shogun Sport was the name used instead.

Production began in Japan in 1996, and was available for most export markets by 1997, where it was variously known as the Challenger, Pajero Sport in Europe, Montero Sport in North America, South America, Spain and the Philippines, Nativa in parts of Latin America, the Caribbean and the Middle East, Shogun Sport in the United Kingdom, and Strada G-Wagon in Thailand. Based on the Strada pickup truck of the same vintage, sharing many components and some body panels (i.e. front doors), the first-generation Pajero Sport was also built on the second-generation Pajero wheelbase, and served as a smaller model to the larger Pajero.
Like the Pajero, it featured independent front suspension with torsion bars and a live rear axle. In addition to numerous facelifts over the years, there was a major suspension change from rear leaf to coil springs in late 2000. As its popularity increased, local assembly for foreign markets was introduced in China in 2003, and Brazil in 2006. Sales were discontinued in Japan in 2003. In the United States, where it was superseded by the Endeavor, sales ended in 2004. In Canada the Montero Sport continued to be sold alongside the Endeavor until 2008. Sales in central and western Europe ended in 2008, with the introduction of the second generation Pajero/Montero Sport. In Japan, it was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza.
The 3-litre V6 is the most commonly used engine; it produces 175 hp (130 kW; 177 PS) at 5,000 rpm. The North American market received petrol V6 engines during all years of production while a petrol 2.4-litre engine was offered on base models from 1997 through 1999 in the United States and for additional years in Canada. Markets outside of North America also had a variety of turbo-diesel four-cylinder engines to choose between.

The Montero Sport LS is a fantastic vehicle! It has great style, good power with just the standard v-6, and seems to be quite reliable. Of course, with less than 6000 miles on it so far, the reliability hasn't really been challenged yet. However, I have noticed a couple of minor issues: 1. The exterior finish is quite delicate. I accidentally put a small mark on the door just by touching it lightly with my keys. Later, I noticed some other marks under the same door, and I've no clue how they got there. 2. The handling is a bit tricky on wet roads. I'm not sure if it's the vehicle itself or maybe the tire design, but it can be a bit scary. Overall, I'm really happy with my Montero Sport LS!

Before buying the Montero, we checked out its reviews. We noticed that people commonly described it as the best highway driver, but also as the most sluggish. However, we are extremely happy with the way our Montero rides. It is a rugged, dependable, family-sized, and good-looking vehicle that will get you from Point A to Point B in an expeditious manner. If you are looking for a vehicle that can run the mud flaps into the ground back in the holler, then maybe the Montero is not for you. But if you want a reliable and efficient car, then the Montero or Montero Sport is a great choice!

I purchased my car used in 2011 with exactly 100,000 miles on it. Since then, I have taken great care of it by doing all the regular maintenance. Unfortunately, I have had to replace several parts such as brakes, rotors, front hubs, transfer case, transmission, radiator, power steering pump, all hoses and belts, tires, main bolt on crank shaft, ac compressor, and turn signal switch. Although there are still some issues with the 4 wheel drive and horn, I remain optimistic. Despite the $10,000 I have spent on repairs, I am grateful for the time I have spent with my car.

84k miles and already having tons of problems. Power steering pump leaking, Valve cover gaskets leaking, Lifters are ticking, Transmission acts strange, and I've already had to replace pretty much every suspension part and now the AC is going. What next?? and I have always maintained it!! I bought it because the price was right and I love the style of the Montero. I should have bought an xterra or 4runner. I will never buy another Mitsubishi again!!!

The dealer has been unable to fix the alignment issue. Every time I bring it in, the car still pulls to the right or left. However, the fuel economy is acceptable, and the V6 engine provides good power. Although I was disappointed to find that the car did not come with auto headlights or heated side mirrors, these features can be added later. The truck has a cool look with a great color combination. The seats are a bit stiff, but there are other SUVs available at a similar price point that offer more comfort.

Looks great but that's about it. Needs a larger engine. I noticed a slight fish-tail with wind gusts. However, I understand that the price may not be worth it for you.

The 2002 Montero Sport is definitely a fun vehicle to drive, but it seems like the engine can be a bit sluggish at times, especially when going up hills. It may shift gears frequently in search of the right one. Additionally, there is a slight rattling noise coming from the front driver and rear passenger wheels. When we brought it back to the dealer, they assured us that this is a normal sound for an SUV. While I have owned other SUVs in the past, I have never heard anything quite like this.
