The Chevrolet Traverse is a full-size crossover SUV with three-row seating built by General Motors. It is built on the same platform as the GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave, known as the Lambda platform for the first generation, and the C1XX for the second generation. It also shares the C1XX platform with the Cadillac XT6. It is the successor to the TrailBlazer body-on-frame SUV and the Uplander minivan.

The second-generation model debuted in showrooms in the summer of 2017. Starting with the 2019 model year, the Traverse was slotted above the new mid-size Chevrolet Blazer as part of Chevrolet's plans to expand its SUV lineup.

The Traverse name was originally used for a concept car at the 2003 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, but that concept gave way when the Equinox launched for the 2005 model year.

Common 2018 Chevrolet Traverse problems

The 2018 Chevrolet Traverse has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine, electrical system, steering, and fuel system.

  • Engine Issues: One of the most severe issues affecting the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse is engine problems. These issues include a sudden reduction in engine power, sputtering, and complete engine failure while driving. Some owners have resolved these issues by replacing the timing chain, while others have found no adequate solution.
  • Electrical Issues: Electrical issues are another significant problem for the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse. The traction control and Stabilitrak systems have been reported to cause a loss of power, which could pose a severe danger while driving. Furthermore, some owners have experienced issues with the electrics of the ignition switch, where the engine's power dies, but all other electrical parts in the car keep functioning.
  • Steering Issues: Losing power to the steering while driving is a driver's worst nightmare. Some drivers of the Traverse report issues with power steering failing, making steering the car far more difficult. This could be caused by an issue with the steering pump, which can create very serious issues and make driving far more dangerous. Another, less serious, issue that some owners have with the power steering is a clunking or grinding sound when they turn, indicating an issue with the steering that needs to be fixed.
  • Problems with the Fuel System: The fuel system on the Traverse is another source of problems for the Traverse's owners. Specifically, there is a problem where the car loses its economic mpg and starts performing far worse. This commonly happens to older cars but is not acceptable on more modern models. A serious dip in fuel economy can cause a serious dent in driver's wallets.

In conclusion, the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse has a range of issues that its drivers have noted and complained about. These issues can significantly impact the car's performance, safety, and overall driving experience. If you own a 2018 Chevrolet Traverse and have experienced any of these issues, it is essential to seek professional help and repair services to ensure your vehicle's safety and reliability.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-05
  • VIN: 1GNERFKW9JJ
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Had my traverse for two years, second owner. When I received the car, it had to immediately go into the shop as they couldn’t figure out why all sorts of dash lights where coming on. My car was at the dealership for three weeks and ultimately they replaced the chip, stating that was the issue. Two months down the road, I get the shift to park error message starting. Fast forward to 4 months ago when the stability error message starts to intermittently come on and off. 30 days ago I got the first of the service charging system message and the battery saver mode. My car shut itself down while I was doing 55 miles per hour on a back country road. Every lthing locked up and I had to force a turn to get out of traffic. It was determined my battery was good but alternator was bad. Checked fuses just to be safe all were good. Replaced the alternator with a new one. As of today, I am not able to drive my vehicle because of this same issue. This time I went ahead and replaced the battery and nothing has changed. They are saying it’s my alternator AGAIN. How is this possible that all of us 2018 traverse drivers are experiencing the exact same malfunctions in order and now we have to repeatedly replace the alternator? There is no way 1000s more of traverse owners are all buying “bad” alternators. Something is going on with this and these vehicles are not safe to drive. I can’t even trade mine in because my credit is shot. I pay way too much for this car to not be able to reliably and safely transport my kids to and from school.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-02
  • VIN: 1GNEVJKW2JJ
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: Incident Description: On 10/2/2024, I discovered a critical failure in the rear suspension of my 2018 Chevrolet Traverse. The rear left control arm had completely rusted through and detached from the vehicle frame. This occurred unexpectedly while my family was backing the vehicle into the driveway from my garage. Had this failure happened while driving, it could have resulted in a catastrophic loss of control, leading to a severe accident with potential for serious injury or fatality to my family and others. This incident raises serious concerns about the safety of 2018 Chevrolet Traverse vehicles. The premature and sudden failure of a critical suspension component due to rust suggests a potential defect in the materials, anti-corrosion treatment, or design of the control arm. This could pose a significant safety risk to all owners of this vehicle model. I have taken detailed photographs of the failed control arm and the affected area of the vehicle frame, clearly showing the extent of the rust and corrosion. General Motors has issued a safety recall (N212346640) for certain vehicles due to a defect in the rear suspension toe links. These vehicles may have received improper electrocoating corrosion protection, making the toe links susceptible to premature rust and fracture. This could lead to a loss of vehicle control and increase the risk of a crash. The similarity of this recall to the failure I experienced with the rear left control arm onmy 2018 Chevrolet Traverse suggests a potential pattern of corrosion-related suspension component failures in General Motors vehicles.   This recall demonstrates that General Motors has acknowledged and addressed similar corrosion-related defects in other vehicles. It supports my concern that the control arm failure on my Traverse may also stem from a manufacturing defect and warrants a thorough investigation by the NHTSA.

Carry Handle, Shell, Base,Tether, Lower Anchor (on car seat or vehicle) PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-16
  • VIN: 1GNEVJKWXJJ
  • Components: Carry Handle, Shell, Base,Tether, Lower Anchor (on car seat or vehicle)
  • Summary: I purchased these Carseats after I was in an accident and needed to replace the 2 that I had, The tethers attached to the carseat were not effective at all, I could not get them anywhere near close to actually securing the Carseats. So I opted to use my vehicles seatbelts, with the seatbelts pulled as far as I could get them and locked the Carseats still moved more than an inch. I had to have my husband help me push the carseat as far down into my seat that I could to get the least amount of movement as possible. One of the Carseats even tipped over while I was driving after all of this. Needless to say that I will be replacing these seats as I do not feel they would keep my children safe in the event of an accident, I feel as though these seats endanger my children because they aren't keeping them secure enough not to become projectiles in the event of an accident.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-09
  • VIN: 1GNEVJKW6JJ
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: bracket on the exhaust flex pipe bracket broke. This is a known issue by GM (PIP5681C) that covers 2018-2022 Chevy Traverse and Special Coverage notices have been issued for at least the 2019 (N212356540) and 2021 (N222385510). I called GM today and they said my 2018 Traverse would not be covered even though it is a known issue and had a bulletin issued on it. If this is a known issue for several years (including 2018), why wouldn't the 2018 model be included and covered?

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-24
  • VIN: 1GNEVJKWXJJ
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: While I was driving, the rear sunroof suddenly "exploded". I was shocked as I did not feel any impact, but it sounded like a wrecking ball had hit my car. I don't think I swerved into the other lane or anything like that, but honestly it happened so fast, I'm not sure. My heart was racing, and I felt like I was in danger, but able to pull over fairly soon after. I began to feel unwell as if my blood pressure was elevated, which I'm sure it was. I inspected the outside of the vehicle and didn't see any damage, but then from inside noticed a crackling sound, which was localized to the rear sunroof. I examined it from the top and found it to be cracking in various areas around the perimeter of the glass. The shade on the sunroof was closed, so I don't believe any glass entered the interior of the car. I called my daughter to tell her what had happened and drove the rest of the way home. At this point, I have not had anyone else look at it but am reaching out to the dealership where I bought the car.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-02
  • VIN: 1GNERFKWXJJ
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: So since 8/02/23 when the vehicle had 54,000 miles it began to give electrical problems. I bought the car 01/16/23 it had only 26,000 miles. The service battery charging system light and battery saver mode went on and also the reduced steering light which began to shut the car down I immediately pulled over. Took it to gm dealer they tested battery was dead then charged it checked alternator it failed so they replaced alternator. 7 days later 8/10/23 the car is still running rough idle. Had savi code p0496 evap flow during non purge replaced purge solenoid. The car still the engine slightly was not 100 percent fixed I told them every time it wasn't good. 02/12/24 I took back to dealer engine running rough and every time I put gas it was hesitant the transmission I am assuming check engine light was on code p0496 the gm dealer diagnosised and replaced canister purge solenoid.so 2/28/24 battery saver mode light came on andservice battery charging vehicle stalled out checked alternator failed replaced alternator. 6/25/24 took to another gm dealer and the diagnosised it check engine light was on and told them my car wasn't starting well after I filled my gas and rough engine. Told me to come back 7/03/24 to do evap canister check engine light was on they found evap leak from from evap canister charged me 508 dollars. So I took vehicle from dealer towards hone filled up gas car would not start problem was not fixed called dealer immediately manager said get here before they close I did and manager left but on service guy got the master mechanic to look at it he said it's purge valve the next day they were closed due to 4th of July so was told to take back on 7/5/24 to replace purge solenoid. The gas issue was fixed but now the transmission is worse when I accelerate it stutters bad I been telling both dealers was told they can't look at vehicle unless check engine light was on so 3 faulty purge valves 2 alternators replaced and car stutters worse shift to park light.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-25
  • VIN: 1GNEVKKW8JJ
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: This concerns a defective transmission control (shifter) assembly. The defective shifter assemblies prevent the vehicles from detecting when the driver places the car in “Park.” As a result, the vehicle goes into accessory mode and one cannot shut off or lock the vehicle, the instrument cluster displays a “Shift to Park” message even though the gear shifter is already in “Park,” and the battery drains. Because one cannot reliably turn off their vehicles when reaching their destination, the Defect substantially impairs the vehicles’ ability to provide safe and reliable transportation. Shifter assemblies are not expected replacement or maintenance parts and absent a defect should not require replacement. Nonetheless, GM had knowledge of the defect and GM fails to repair the GM known Defect. Chevrolet service department has confirmed the defect.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-22
  • VIN: 1GNERKKW2JJ
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Shift to Park error occurs 90% of the time I put my car into park. The car turns off but none of the electrical does, like its in accessory mode. Dings when you try to leave the car and will not lock. Display reads 'Shift into Park'. I have to jiggle the shifter to get it to engage. Could be a couple jiggles or 5 mins of jiggling and restarting the car, shifting from drive to park over and over.. This has been "repaired" once under warranty. Now that it is out of warranty the manufacturer refuses to cover any of the expenses on this known issue with a bulletin per your website. I did not realize this was happening to so many. Should be a recall for sure! VERY FRUSTERATING.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-20
  • VIN: 1GNERGKW0JJ
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: when driving my vehicle with the air condition on after about 25 minutes, the audio system completely goes out. no sound from the stereo, the backup camera alert, the blind spot alert, the "clicking" sound from the blinkers, all chimes, everything. The mechanic looked at the car and stated that this is a result of the condensation from the HVAC system entering the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) module through the module vents. He stated this should have been a recall as it is an extreme safety hazard as it prevents any audio alerts of the blind spot or backup camera warning systems. He states the ANC module should be replaced and a secondary shield should be installed to prevent this in the future. The sound eventually comes back once the condensation dries up but once the Air condition comes back on again shortly all the sounds go out again.

Negative 2018 Chevrolet Traverse car reviews

Transmission issues!!! We're sorry to hear about the trouble you've had with your vehicle. We understand how frustrating it can be to deal with these kinds of issues, especially when they impact your family's safety. We hope that the dealership can resolve the issue soon and get you back on the road with confidence. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

  2. Davin Bradtke 2024-09-01

As of 1/9/2023, there is a persistent 'shift to park' error that GM has yet to address, despite it affecting multiple models. This issue has resulted in lawsuits. When I contacted a dealership for assistance, I was met with poor customer service and a lack of knowledge regarding the issue. The estimated cost to fix the issue ranges from $50-$1200. Unfortunately, the 2018 Chevy Traverse High Country has been a disappointment, with poor quality for the price and subpar service from local Chevrolet dealerships. However, the vehicle's size is a positive attribute. After experiencing multiple transmission failures and having to visit the shop twice for repairs, I am disappointed in the auto stop 'feature', which cannot be bypassed. Additionally, the music system has issues with bass causing the front right speaker to buzz and rattle. Despite being loyal GM customers for 20 years and owning multiple Suburbans, Yukons, and Cadillacs, we are grossly disappointed. Although the transmission faults were fixed, the rattling and squeaking issues were not initially addressed. The vehicle lacks front parking sensors, which were present in our older vehicles and replaced with a front camera that requires manual activation. The retractable sunroof shade is made of cheap fabric and requires careful handling to avoid breaking the plastic clasp. After visiting multiple dealerships, we were finally able to resolve 99% of the noises, which were caused by a loose wire harness chafing in the back hatch and door panels.I found an after-market company that offers a start-stop bypass to avoid the frustrating shut off at traffic lights. In my experience, Chevrolet and GM have not met my expectations, and I would not recommend them. Specifically, I would not recommend Carl Black Chevrolet in Kennesaw, GA.

I have owned the car for 2 weeks and have noticed a few issues, such as a roof rack rail with a bad finish and a spot on the interior door panel where the color is off. I contacted the dealer, but unfortunately, they informed me that it would not be covered under warranty. I also reached out to GM, but they gave me the same response. Additionally, there is a spot on the dash that looks concerning, as well as two drip spots on the exterior paint. If you are considering purchasing this car, I would recommend doing a very close inspection of the entire vehicle to identify any blemishes, as they may not be fixed once you take it home.

The new Lamboda body style vehicles built by GM have their drivetrain built in Mexico, which is a testament to the quality of the manufacturing process. Although there have been some issues with the entertainment system, transmission, and sunshade clip, these have been addressed and resolved through reprogramming and replacement. The typical warning prompts for brake assist and park assist have also been addressed. The weather stripping has been replaced to eliminate an annoying creaking noise. Overall, the Traverse is a reliable and spacious vehicle with impressive towing capacity and advanced technology. I highly recommend it.

Hey there! Before making a purchase, it might be helpful to do some research on this car. Just a heads up, there is a known timing system issue that Chevy has posted some service bulletins about. However, they have not issued a recall due to the cost of repairs and the fact that no fatalities have been reported. It's important to note that the system can fail at any time, and even a minor front end impact can cause complete failure. If you're considering buying a Chevy, it might be worth looking into this issue further. In the past, when the system has failed, Chevy has been known to blame someone else and not work with the customer on a case by case basis. So, just be aware and do your research before making a decision.

Positive 2018 Chevrolet Traverse car reviews

Just bought a 3LT two weeks ago and continue to be very impressed! I test drove a Cadillac AT5, a Honda Pilot, and a Ford Explorer, but there was no contest. This rig has an excellent engine and the 9-speed transmission is outstanding. Living in Montana, the Traverse takes on our winter conditions without any problems. My wife loves the very comfortable interior and leather bucket seats. I highly recommend this vehicle for its ride, appointments, and cargo space!

I've had the pleasure of driving this car for about a month now, and I must say, it's been a pleasant surprise. The Traverse is a great size and easy to drive. I've driven it for 1200 miles so far, and the mileage has been in the 21mpg range for general driving. On two highway trips, I got 28mpg at 72mph and 25.7mpg at 76-78mph. I wish I could give more information, but there's only so much you can learn in 1200 miles. Overall, I'm impressed with Chevy's game stepping up!

My family and I recently purchased a 2018 Chevy Traverse in Cajun Red and we absolutely love it! After searching for three years to replace our old 2004 Explorer, we finally found the perfect fit. The Traverse offers ample cargo space, which is perfect for our weekend trips to the lake with our two kids and two dogs. The interior and exterior of the car are both stunning, and the front seats and middle captain chairs provide plenty of room for my 6'2, 260 lbs frame. The driver's seat is comfortable and easily adjustable, although I do wish there was a more comfortable spot for my left elbow. The rear captain seats are a hit with the kids, who love the reclining feature and the abundance of USB ports and drink holders. Even the third seat is comfortable, according to them. Overall, we are thrilled with our purchase and the awesome infotainment system is just the cherry on top! While I wouldn't admit to making a $40,000 buying choice because of a radio, I must say that the technogeek in me secretly thinks it's pretty cool. My only complaint is that the menu on the computer screen in the instrument cluster poorly highlights the item to be selected. To identify the selected item, I have to guess or arrow up or down a couple of times to see the weak highlight change from item to item. Not a big deal unless I start using it to select music from my iPhone library as I drive. That might be too awkward, but still really cool to be able to do. While the polished ebony-looking trim and the nice-looking touch screen are elegant and appealing to look at, I wonder if they are going to get scratched up and not look so nice, especially the shiny black plastic. The hideaway cubby behind the touchscreen is likely to not be used much, but we'll see. It did not give me the wow factor it likely intended. The same is true for the rear camera in the rearview mirror. It works and looks nice when you are stopped and wanting to look behind, but it is impossible to use while driving unless you take time to adjust your vision. It is not the same as looking in the mirror. Having said that, with a back end full of gear, the mirror will not be an option, and I'm sure I will appreciate the ability to view the trailer or close following cars. Our Traverse is equipped with blind-side detection, rear parking alarm, and the bird's-eye camera view with front and rear cameras. We are continually growing in our understanding of the benefits of all these features and have somewhat changed our spartan viewpoint to thinking these are not wow gimmicks like the rearview mirror camera might be. They will become our next 'can't own a car without' items like cruise control and intermittent wipers once were (air conditioning and power windows were once those too for us who used to drive 60's cars and not 'cause they were classics). The heating and cooling controls are nice with tri-zone control. We're really looking forward to the heated seats, especially with winter coming up. I've tried them out and they're great - they get really hot! Plus, they're easy to control separately from the infotainment system. On Star and the 4G WiFi work really well, as does Sirius XM. I bet the kids are excited to stream movies without worrying about their data usage. It does seem a bit expensive, but I'm already loving being able to start the car from my office using the My Chevrolet app. I guess everyone has their own way of getting hooked, right? I'm not an engine and transmission expert, but I can say that the acceleration feels good - even 'peppy'! The transmission is smooth up and down, and I haven't noticed any jerky downshifting or hunting behavior like some other reviews have mentioned. The cabin is also really quiet, which is great. The stop light start/stop will take some getting used to, but it seems to work well. Overall, as someone who has bought 3 new Fords and run them into the ground, I can confidently say that the 2018 Traverse is absolutely excellent!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with the Traverse. My wife and I decided to trade in our Ford Escape for a larger SUV with more seats and cargo room. We test drove several 7 passenger SUVs, but the Traverse stood out with its spacious interior and great features. We took it on a long road trip out west and it performed wonderfully! However, on a subsequent trip, we experienced some issues with the transmission making a loud noise in 8th gear on a hill. We took it to a Chevy dealer on a Saturday and left it there for a week. Unfortunately, they couldn't replicate the issue. We picked it up on our way back and haven't heard the noise since. We've reached out to GM to request reimbursement for the rental car and to authorize a detailed inspection of the transmission, but we haven't received a response yet. Thank you for your time!

The new Traverse is impressively flexible for a vehicle. We decided to purchase this SUV for our upcoming cross country trip this summer. After years of buying mid-level trims, we opted for the 'High Country' premium trim for our trip. We traded in our 2015 Rogue, which we were very happy with, but it was just too small. With the Traverse, we won't have that problem. The interior of the High Country is very upscale, and I could easily bring home several sheets of plywood from the hardware store if I wanted to. We've only driven about 300 miles so far, but I already feel like we hit a home run with this one. It's the most comfortable and quiet car I've ever driven, and we're still discovering new features like the rearview mirror that turns into a TV view of everything behind you with the flip of a switch. Our Rogue had lane change warning and blind spot notification, but this has so much more. I actually feel like I have a co-pilot constantly checking things out for me and letting me know what needs attention. Even though this is a Chevy, I feel like I'm driving a true luxury vehicle. We could have gone for the Buick, as it's the sister vehicle to the Traverse, but I actually prefer the classic lines of the Traverse better. The High Country trim pretty much rivals what the Buick has to offer. Once we start travelling cross country, we'll update our review with more mileage. UPDATE: We've driven over 10,000 miles and still haven't had a single problem with the 2018 Traverse. We still feel the joy every time we get behind the wheel, and my wife has become an even bigger fan than she was when we first purchased it. Simple things like Apple Car Play, a camera hidden in the rearview mirror, and the hands-free opening of the lift gate make our lives easier.Simply put, this is the best vehicle I've ever owned and I'm 73. I plan on keeping it for quite a while. One year later and I'm still learning the speech technology I can use with my USBs. It's a lot of fun! I've only had one issue in the 13,000 miles I've driven the car. Unfortunately, the sunroof shade was cheaply made and the fastener that holds it closed broke, so now I can't close the shade. The roof itself is fine, but I can't close the shade. I looked at it and all the parts are proprietary, so I'm going to ask Chevy to fix it when I take it for the next oil change. On 2/25/22, I finally had the roof shade repaired by Chevy (for about $80.00). Clearly, the roof shade was an afterthought for this year and model. The only additional problem I have at this juncture is an internal switch that sometimes does not activate when I put the car in park. So when I turn the car off, it beeps and tells me to put it in park when it is already in park. When this happens, I need to restart the car, take it out of park, and put it back into park multiple times until the switch works. As an old geezer who lived through AM radio, 8 tracks, cassettes, and CDs, I'm still loving the ability to use
