2010 Hyundai Genesis coupe problems

The Hyundai Genesis Coupe is a rear-wheel drive sports coupe from Hyundai Motor Company, first released on October 13, 2008, for the Korean market. It is Hyundai's first rear-wheel drive sports coupe, and shares its basic platform with the Hyundai Genesis luxury sedan.
The Genesis Coupe arrived in United States dealerships on February 26, 2009, as a 2010 model. Hyundai USA acting president and CEO John Krafcik described the Genesis Coupe as being designed "...to deliver a driving experience that challenges cars like the Infiniti G37."
With the launch of Genesis Motors as a standalone luxury brand, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe remained branded as a Hyundai and eventually was discontinued in 2016.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-15
- VIN: KMHHU6KH4AU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The brakes on my 2010 Genesis Coupe suddenly stopped working while on the freeway, luckily I was able to swerve into the carpool lane and avoid an accident. Upon taking it to Tuttle Click Hyundai I was told a master technician had to review it, which would cost $200 just to look at it. When the technician looked at the car, I was told it needed a new Brake Booster. Hyundai apparently no longer makes this part so the dealership had to locate an aftermarket replacement which costs about $1,100. I did note to the dealership that there was recalls on other 2010 Genesis cars for similar issues, but was told the recall was for the sedans, not the coupe and that they/Hyundai would not cover it. Upon installing the brake booster and bleeding the brakes, it was found that I also need a new ABS Module, which will cost up to $4,000 to find and install. Another user posted this same issue to the NHTSA in October 2022.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-08
- VIN: KMHHT6KD3AU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The 2.0T engine failed and the vehicle is currently at Hyundai service department waiting on my warranty company to do an inspection of the engine. My safety was at risk as the engine failed during normal operation of the vehicle on a busy city street near a blind curve which other vehicles travel at high rates of speed. Hyundai Service department has confirmed the engine has failed which it needs to be replaced/rebuilt. Hyundai Service department has inspected the vehicle. Waiting on inspection from warranty company. There were no warning lights or symptoms prior to the engine failure. Thankfully I was not operating the vehicle on the expressway as I normally do on my way home which could have put me in a much more dangerous scenario when the engine failed. When the engine failed it started to effect other components in the vehicle, as I started to completely lose the ability to maneuver the vehicle putting myself in a dangerous situation.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-22
- VIN: KMHHT6KD3AU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: On September 22, 2022 while traveling at about 65 mph on state highway 57 in CA, I came upon a sudden group of cars hitting their brakes and had to slam on my brakes but my 2010 Genesis Coupe did not stop and I had to swerve into an entrance lane on my right to avoid a serious collision. Fortunately there were no cars entering the highway on that entrance. I was then able to drive a short distance home. On May 26, 2022 I had my car serviced including the brakes by Service Auto Care and my car gave me no brake problems until this incident. On September 23 I brought my Genesis Coupe to Service Auto and explained what happened. The brakes worked fine on the way to the shop. They tested the brakes and said that the ABS module was defective but it was just put under a 15 year extended warranty by Hyundai on May 19, 2022 and to take it to the closest dealer. The dealer, Russell Westbrook Hyundai of Anaheim told me only the sedan was covered. This dangerous defect could occur at any time and cause a severe accident. I hope this report is helpful to the NHTSA and the defective part is replaced without charge. The dealership charged me $205 for an estimate, then wanted $2200 to re-do the brakes and then approximately $4000 to replace the ABS module. I have documents to back up everything I have presented.

2010 Hyundai Genesis coupe recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2010 Hyundai Genesis coupe.
- Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:INTERLOCK/LOCKOUT
- Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2010-2013 Genesis Coupe vehicles. A return spring in the ignition lock switch may fracture, which can result in unintended vehicle movement when the vehicle is started in gear, without the parking brake applied.
- Consequence: Unintended vehicle movement can increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the ignition lock switch, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 4, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 266.
- Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America
- Components: AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION
- Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2010-2016 Genesis Coupe vehicles manufactured December 12, 2008, to June 11, 2016. The electrical harness connector for the front passenger seat Occupant Classification System (OCS) may dislodge when the seat is moved.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, the disconnected OCS would, by default, cause the first stage, and only the first stage, of the air bag to deploy, whether there is a child seat in the front seat and the bag should not deploy or if the crash is severe and both stages should deploy. Either scenario increases the risk of injury to the front seat occupant.
- Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will secure the OCS connector to prevent it from disconnecting, free of charge. Parts are not currently available and a second letter will be sent to owners when parts are available. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 151.
- Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
- Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
- Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

I must admit, I used to be quite particular about cars. If you had told me five years ago that I would end up buying a Hyundai, I would have found it hard to believe. I'm also known for getting bored with my cars after about 18 months. However, I've now had my Genesis for two and a half years and I love it just as much, if not more, than the day I bought it! It's surprisingly nimble for a car of its size and handles similarly to my old 350-Z, but without the twitchiness that American muscle cars tend to have. It's definitely quick and very comfortable, and best of all, it's been extremely reliable! The only downside is that people stop me everywhere I go to look at it and ask me all about it, leaving noseprints on the windows!
-
I am really impressed with the Genesis Turbo Coupe. It's a fantastic rear-wheel drive turbo sports car, which is exactly what I was looking for. The body of the car looks like it was shaped by the wind, giving it an aggressive stance that makes it stand out from other cars on the road. I've had multiple people stop me at lights or roll down their windows to ask what kind of car it is. Mine is a 6-speed manual, and it runs strong through the gears and power band, with a great sound that is very satisfying behind the wheel. Luckily, the Genesis Turbo Coupe can be easily modified for those who want more power. Shifting is smooth and easy, but it's important to note that the traction control button on this car is extremely important. To the left of the steering wheel, there is a button labeled 'TCS' for Traction Control System. If traction control is turned off, you must be careful powering through turns as the wheels are free to spin and slide the back end out. With TCS ON, the wheels use electronic control to prevent them from breaking loose. I have some rules for driving this car: if I'm on the highway, TCS must be ON; if it's raining, TCS ON; and in the winter, TCS ON. Basic RWD rules of thumb apply, so don't floor it going into corners. Winter driving can be questionable in this vehicle if conditions are very bad, but it's drivable with only an inch or two of snow. I've made it through the last two mild winters here, but I now run snow tires in the winter. I highly recommend having two sets of wheels if you get snow in the winter. Overall, the Genesis Turbo Coupe looks incredible, sounds and performs terrific. When treated with care and well-maintained, this car is not only good-looking but also fun to drive. Update: It's been five years since I bought the car, and I've driven it pretty hard, but not to excess. I accelerate aggressively and shift around 4k quite a bit.I've always changed the oil every 3,000 miles with full-synthetic and my last car payment is this month, so I'll own it. The only major repair I've had was a new timing chain at around 115,000 miles, which cost me about $1,500. Just a heads up, I got lucky. When inspecting my timing chain, I found that it had become so loose that it was making contact with the oil nozzle that provides oil to the chain and sheared it closed. If I had waited even a few weeks longer, the engine would have been ruined. I didn't have any warning lights to indicate the issue, only a faint rattle when shifting gears. Changing the timing chain at 100,000 miles should do the trick. My right front strut might be blown, and the suspension could probably be replaced now at 125,000 miles. I've had a little bump-stop noise from the right front strut for about 10,000 miles now, but it's not urgent. It's a 2010 and people still shout at me across parking lots, 'Hey man, what kind of car is that?' I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Genesis Coupe again, no regrets here. Update: There are two new issues at 147,000 miles on the odometer. There's a small coolant leak from the radiator, but I haven't been able to locate the source yet. It's only losing half a quart per week, so I've been adding coolant on the weekends. Also, there's something sliding around inside the passenger door panel. It sounds like a small screw or something inside the door panel. I'll remove the panel soon and investigate.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your Genesis Coupe! It's impressive to see Hyundai putting in such a great effort. The car seems to be giving tough competition to Honda, Toyota, and even BMW. I can imagine how happy you must have been to find the Coupe after driving several competitors. The Hyundai Coupe is hard to beat, even without considering its lower price. It has great style, good fuel economy (on regular gas!), just about every option you'd expect (with the Grand Touring option), not to mention terrific power and handling. I hope that the car's resale value will hold up well in the future, but for now, let's just enjoy it!
-
First of all, this is a fantastic car. If you're considering buying it, I recommend shopping around first. I was able to purchase my Genesis Coupe for $18,500 + tax, title, and processing fee. The turbo model is excellent - it's not the fastest, but it has enough power, great handling, and stunning looks. I can go about 420-450 miles per tank of gas, which is impressive for a sports car. The interior is beautiful and comfortable, and the car as a whole looks fantastic. No other car in this class can offer the same options, looks, and fun that this car provides. People often stop to check out my car while it's parked, which speaks volumes. I can't wait to drive my Genesis to work in the morning - I absolutely love this car!
-
I've only had this car for a short while, but I must say that everything about it has exceeded my high expectations. For Hyundai's first venture into the performance arena, the Genesis Coupe is a stellar debut. The Infiniti G37, with comparable equipment, is listed at over $10K more, and the only real edge I'd give the G37 is in the aesthetics of the interior design. The Gennie Coupe is comfortable, quick off the line, nimble in maneuvering, and very stylish. Talk about turning heads on the road! I would definitely recommend it as a quality performance car that represents a clearly superior value to anything in its price range, and it can compete with others priced several thousand dollars more.

I really like the style of this car, as do many others. However, I have experienced some computer/electrical issues with my particular car. I have had to replace the radio twice, the amplifier once, the driver door button twice, and the push button start occasionally has an 'interrupt' in the brake connect that prevented the car from starting several times. While these may seem like minor issues, I am concerned that the computer/electrical system may be damaging other components in the car. I am worried about what might happen next. I have heard from another owner that his traction control seized and caused him to have an accident. Hyundai replaced his car, but the new one also has some issues. Dealing with electrical issues can be frustrating, but I hope that the manufacturer can address these problems soon.

Although there are some positives, such as its speed, I found the comfort to be lacking. This was my main complaint, as I had to keep changing my position after just 4 hours. Additionally, the side support was poor and the gas mileage was not as good as I had hoped, with the best I could achieve being 28 mpg on the highway. When compared to a V6 Accord or Camry, which can provide better performance and above 32 mpg, it is clear that the motor is not very efficient. Perhaps I should have bought a V6 Accord Coupe instead. While I initially thought it was quick, I was surprised when a Mini Cooper S was able to catch up to me at full throttle. Overall, it serves its purpose as a daily commuting vehicle.

Better than the Tiburon! The only problem I've had is pin holes in the transmission cooler, but other than that, no problems. It's so fun to drive that I plan on keeping it. I grew up driving Mopar muscle, then Supras, and now this.

The interior, door panels, arm rest, and glove box door may leave marks that are difficult to remove. The factory is currently investigating this issue. We understand that this may be a concern for our customers and we are working to improve the quality of our products.
