1993 Ford Probe problems

ford logo

The Ford Probe is a liftback coupé produced by Ford, introduced in 1988 and produced until 1997. The Probe was the result of Ford's collaboration with its longtime Japanese partner Mazda, and both generations of Probe were derived from the front-wheel drive Mazda G platform that underpinned the Mazda Capella.

The Probe succeeded the Ford EXP, and the instrument cluster of the first-generation Probe and pop-up headlight mechanisms were borrowed from the FC Series RX-7.

Based on the Mazda MX-6 as a sport compact coupe, the Probe was intended to fill the market niche formerly occupied by the Capri in Europe, and it was originally intended to be the fourth generation Ford Mustang in the North American market as a direct competitor with the Acura Integra, Isuzu Piazza, Nissan 200SX, and the Toyota Celica. During that time, Ford's marketing team had deemed that a front-wheel drive platform (borrowed Mazda GD and GE platforms) would have lower costs for production, and also because the platform had been gaining popularity with consumers.

Mustang fans objected to the front-wheel drive configuration, Japanese engineering, and lack of a V8, so Ford began work on a new design for the Mustang instead. On March 17, 1997, Ford announced the discontinuation of the Probe.

Common 1993 Ford Probe problems

Based on the information provided in the search results, here are some common problems with the Ford Probe 1993 based on complaints from owners:

  • Water Temp Gauge Runs High:
    • Owners have reported concerns about the water temperature gauge running on the high end of normal.
      • High water temperature can be indicative of cooling system problems such as a malfunctioning thermostat, radiator issues, or cooling fan failures.
      • Overheating can lead to serious engine damage if not addressed promptly, making it crucial to diagnose and fix the root cause of the temperature gauge reading high.
  • Overdrive Light Constantly Blinks:
    • Another common complaint is the overdrive light blinking constantly.
      • This issue is often related to transmission problems, indicating potential issues with the overdrive system, transmission fluid levels, or sensor malfunctions.
      • Continuous blinking of the overdrive light may signify transmission issues that require professional diagnosis and repair to prevent further damage to the transmission system.
  • Maintenance Costs:
    • Owners have expressed concerns about the ongoing maintenance costs associated with the Ford Probe, mentioning significant expenses to keep the car running.
      • High maintenance costs can be attributed to the age of the vehicle, potential wear and tear on components, and the need for regular servicing to address common issues.
      • Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the longevity and performance of the Ford Probe, especially considering the potential for higher repair costs as the vehicle ages.

These common problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance, prompt diagnosis of issues, and timely repairs to ensure the Ford Probe 1993 operates smoothly and reliably.

Why did the Ford Probe fail?

By 1997, the Probe's final year, Ford sold less than 20,000 units compared to 108,000 Mustangs. Ford did such a poor job of positioning and marketing the Probe it was almost destined to fail. A third-generation Probe was planned, but that design became the early-2000s Mercury Cougar, also an unsuccessful car.

What happened to all the Ford probes?

Why Was the Ford Probe Taken Off the Market? By 1997, Probe sales had dropped to less than 20,000 as buyer interest was lured away from the coupe and towards the Mustang it was meant to replace. It also lost sales to the Thunderbird and Mazda's Miata, all of which had rear-wheel drive.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-07-19
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I'VE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR EVER SINCE I'VE OWNED MY 1993 FORD PROBE GT (V6-CYLINDER). I HAD 3 PREVIOUS NEW AND REBUILT COMPRESSORS REPLACED. THEY ONLY LASTED BETWEEN 1 AND 2 YEARS. EACH TIME COSTING ME BETWEEN $750 AND $1100 FOR LABOR AND TO REPLACE THE COMPRESSOR, O-RING, CONDENSER, PULL A VACUUM, RECHARGE THE SYSTEM, ETC. I WAS INFORMED BY ALL OF MY AC REPAIR GUYS THAT THE PROBLEM WAS A SMALL $10 VALVE ON THE COMPRESSOR THAT HAD A LIMITED 1-2 YEAR LIFE BUILT-IN TO IT BY THE FORD MANUFACTURER. FORD CALLS THIS A KNOWN DESIGN FLAW. THIS VALVE IS NOT AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC. EVIDENTLY IT'S ONLY AVAILABLE TO AUTHORIZED FORD COMPRESSOR REBUILDERS. FORD HAS NOT TAKEN ANY STEPS TO FIX THIS VALVE DESIGN FLAW. SO, WHEN MY COMPRESSOR (VALVE) WENT OUT FOR THE 4TH TIME, I DECIDED TO TRY REPAIRING IT MYSELF. THIS IS WHAT I DID TO REPAIR MY AIR CONDITIONER MYSELF FOR ONLY A SMALL FRACTION OF THE COST 1). I PUT IN LEAK DETECTOR TO VERIFY THAT ONLY THE VALVE WAS LEAKING. IT WAS. 2). I SANDED AND CLEANED THE END OF THE DEFECTIVE VALVE. 3). I PUT JB WELD ON THE END OF THE VALVE TO PLUG UP THE HOLE. 4). I RECHARGED THE SYSTEM WITH FREON. THAT'S IT. 4 EASY STEPS AND MY AIR CONDITIONER IS BLOWING LIKE GANGBUSTERS AGAIN FOR LESS THAN $50. YOU WOULD THINK THAT FORD COMPRESSOR MANUFACTURERS WOULD HAVE FIXED THIS VALVE BY NOW, OR MAYBE MY AIR CONDITIONER REPAIR GUYS COULD HAVE JUST PLUGGED-UP THE HOLE IN THE VALVE WITH JB WELD JUST LIKE I DID. BUT NOOOOOOOO! THAT WOULD BE TO EASY, AND THEY WOULDN'T MAKE A TON OF MONEY OFF ME. IT SEEMS THAT THEY ARE ALL IN IT TO MAKE MAJOR BUCKS OFF OF THE SUPPOSED DESIGN FLAW OF A VALVE.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-11-24
  • VIN: 1ZVCT22B2P5
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: 1993 FORD PROBE GT. BOTH REAR BRAKE CALIPERS HAVE EACH SEIZED TWICE (BOTH CALIPERS WERE REBUILT BY A DEALER AFTER THE INITIAL FAILURES). WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURS THERE IS A BURNING BRAKE SMELL, THE ROTOR GLOWS ORANGE, THE ENTIRE WHEEL GETS EXTREMEMLY HOT, AND THE VEHICLE IS DESTABILIZED TOWARDS OVERSTEER. THE BRAKE PADS ARE DESTROYED VERY QUICKLY RESULTING IN INOPERATIVE REAR BRAKES (INCLUDING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE). THE BRAKE ROTOR MAY ALSO WARP DUE TO HEAT DAMAGE. IT IS DIFFICULT TO IMMEDIATELY DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE CORRECTLY SINCE IT INITIALLY JUST SEEMS LIKE A LOSS OF ENGINE POWER. THE PROBLEM IS CAUSED BY A RUBBER SEAL (HANDBRAKE PIVOT-PIN SEAL) THAT DETERIORATES PREMATURELY ALLOWING MOISTURE AND CONTAMINATION TO ENTER THE CALIPER WHERE IS CAUSES THE NEEDLE BEARINGS TO CORRODE. IT THEREFORE ONLY EFFECTS PROBE MODELS WITH REAR DISC BRAKES (PROBE GT). FORD REVISED THE REAR CALIPERS ON PROBE GT'S MANUFACTURED AFTER 5-JAN-1995 TO CORRECT THE DEFECT ALTHOUGH EARLIER MODELS WERE NEVER CORRECTED.*AK

Negative 1993 Ford Probe car reviews

  1. Nicklaus Boyer 2024-11-06

I am the original owner of this vehicle. I have had it for 9 years. The car has been fun to drive. It hugs corners well. The car got me a lot of attention when there weren't too many of them around so you know it has style. The majority of the repairs came within the warranty period: the first to go was the head gaskets. Then the transmission. After the warranty: it was the radiator. Then the liftback hydraulics. The most recent has been the brake master cylinder. I have chosen to not fix this and now the car is for sale. The tires are not cheap but with some shopping around, you can get each tire for about $110.

  2. Ian Rutherford 2024-07-22

I really enjoyed driving this car, but unfortunately, I had some issues with it. I had to get the transmission replaced under warranty at 40000 miles, and I've had to replace the muffler three times in the past 10 years, which can be quite expensive. Three years ago, I had to disconnect the power brakes when they malfunctioned on the highway, and the dealership was unable to diagnose the problem. Recently, the catalytic converter failed, and the power steering has malfunctioned for the fifth time. Unfortunately, it seems like it's time to say goodbye to this car. Additionally, the car was stolen once, and there were a few break-in attempts over the years, despite not living in a high-risk area.

  3. Kayleigh Brakus 2024-07-12

fun car......sold it after egr valve went to hell, and plug wires were shot. axle went bad...but that was prolly my fault....i couldnt complain i bought it for $450 in perfect condition no lie.... i got a deal....ran great for about 2 months, then one day it just wouldnt go....cleaned out egr valve and changed plugg wires and sold it.

  4. Davion Torp 2024-05-28

...to be honest, it has less than 50K on the odometer because it was garaged for years. So far, it has been a mixed bag: capable handling, practical and fun to drive, but reliability issues spoil the experience. First, the praise: you gotta love the silky smooth V6, the precise steering, and confident handling - it feels like it's on rails. After adding Beck Arnley rotors and pads, the brakes feel strong and well-modulated. The rear seats are only suited for the kiddies, but when folded down, they make for a HUGE trunk. Negatives: unfortunately, the valve head gasket needs replacement as it's starting to smell like burnt oil.

  5. Edwardo Mann 2024-05-12

Maybe one of the most attractive cars Ford/Mazda has made. Handles great. If you're considering buying one, I'd recommend getting the 5 speed as the Auto smothers acceleration and power. Although I love this car, it's important to note that parts can be quite expensive. Additionally, the paint is very soft and road noise can be pronounced.

Positive 1993 Ford Probe car reviews

  1. Xavier Casper 2024-11-22

It's great to hear that the car is still running well and that the stereo works great. Additionally, it's wonderful to know that the car is very easy to drive and has great handling.

  2. Gonzalo Hills 2024-11-21

Hey there! I completely agree with you - the Mazda V6 was an amazing car. It's a shame they stopped building it.

  3. Levi Bechtelar 2024-11-14

This was my first car, and I don't think I could have gotten a better first car. I am moving on as I want more power. For someone who wants light mods or to stay stock, this is a perfect car. It has good power, crisp handling, and great handling. On a track, this car holds its own against higher-end cars well out of its price range.

  4. Johathan Johnston 2024-10-01

This is the best car I've ever had! It's a great car. It's a sports car that doesn't get you tickets.

  5. Imani Torphy 2024-09-04

Oh no! It's such a shame that the radiator caved in after only 6 months. I hope you're doing okay. It sounds like you made a wise decision to get a new car instead of fixing it, especially considering the cost. On the bright side, it's great to hear that the car was faster and more comfortable than you expected. It's also impressive that it had good gas mileage, especially on the highway. I'm glad to hear that it was reliable and always started, even if you had to adjust the idle once. It's a shame about the drivers door panel falling to pieces, but overall it sounds like it was a good car. Premium fuel can definitely be annoying, can't it?
