Plymouth Voyager is a nameplate for a range of vans that were marketed by the Plymouth division of Chrysler. From 1974 until 1983, the Voyager was a full-size van, sold as the counterpart of Dodge Sportsman (later the Dodge Ram Wagon). Starting with the 1984 model year, the Voyager was marketed as one of the new Chrysler minivan, along with the Dodge Caravan. As a minivan, there were three generations of the Voyager from 1984 until 2000. Following the closure of the Plymouth division in 2000, the Voyager was marketed under the Chrysler brand as a lower-trim version of the Chrysler Town & Country through 2003.

From 1988 through 2016, Chrysler used the Chrysler Voyager name for export-market minivans; during the existence of the Plymouth brand, export-market Voyagers were produced with the body and trim of the Dodge Caravan. Including the Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan with their rebadged Chrysler, Lancia, and Volkswagen variants, the Chrysler minivans collectively rank as the 13th best-selling automotive model line worldwide.

The Plymouth Voyager minivan was assembled by Chrysler at its Windsor Assembly facility in Windsor, Ontario, Canada; from 1987 to 2000, the Voyager was also assembled at Saint Louis Assembly in Fenton, Missouri (North plant from 1987 through 1995; South plant from 1996 until 2000).

The full-size Plymouth Voyager van was assembled from 1974 until 1983 at the Pillette Road Truck Assembly in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and at the St. Louis North Assembly Plant in Fenton, Missouri.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Summary: VEHICLE HANDLING DEGRADED DUE TO REAR AXLE/BEAM FAILURE. THE HANDLING OF THE MINIVAN WAS SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT. I INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THE REAR WHEEL HAD A SIGNIFICANT NEGATIVE CAMBER WHEN IT HAS A SOLID REAR AXLE/BEAM. I JACKED THE CAR UP AND INSPECTED THE REAR / AXLE AND BEAM AND SAW A NEAR COMPLETE RUST THROUGH OF THE REAR AXLE/BEAM. THE RUST RESULTED IN THE REAR AXLE BENDING UPWARDS NEAR THE RIGHT REAR WHEEL CASTING/HUB. THIS IN TURN YIELDED THE NEGATIVE CAMBER. THE FAILURE WAS CAUGHT PRIOR TO OCCURRING WHILE AT NORMAL SPEEDS (55 MPH). THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT IF THIS HAD FAILED AT 55 MPH IT WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN COMPLETE LOSS OF CONTROL. THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR WHEEL ASSEMBLY WOULD HAVE ONLY BEEN HELD ON BY A SHOCK ABSORBER AND BRAKE LINE. I HAVE NOT YET FINALIZE HOW TO REPAIR THIS BUT LOOKING AT THE REAR AXLE/BEAM ASSEMBLY IT WILL TAKE A COMPLETE REPLACEMENT OF THIS ASSEMBLY. I'D EXPECT THIS TO BE A $2000 REPAIR. I HAVE DETAILED PHOTOGRAPHS AND A REPORT THAT I WOULD BE GLAD TO FORWARD. A MAJOR SUSPENSION COMPONENT SHOULD NOT RUST THROUGH TO FAILURE EVER IF IT WILL RESULT IN LOSS OF CONTROL. THE DODGE DESIGN CONNECTS THE TWO REAR WHEELS CAST IRON HUBS VIA A THIN WALLED TUBE. THIS THIN WALL TUBE KEEPS THE REAR WHEELS ALIGNED AND AT THE CORRECT CAMBER. THIS TUBE RUSTED THROUGH SUCH THAT THE MAIN SUPPORT TYING THE WHOLE REAR SUSPENSION TOGETHER IS LOST. THIS VAN SPENT SEVERAL YEARS IN NY. I WOULD SAY ANY DODGE MINIVAN RUNNING IN THE NORTH EAST IS AT A SIGNIFICANT RISK OF THIS FAILURE. *TR

THIS HAPPENED TO MY DAUGHTER TODAY DURING A STORM, FORCING HER TO RETURN HOME VERY SLOWLY. NO ACCIDENT, NO ONE HURT. (NOTE THAT I AM A REGISTERED PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER.) UPON HER RETURN, I INSPECTED AND FOUND THAT: 1. THE WIPER MOTOR WAS RUNNING AND COULD BE AUDIBLY HEARD WHILE THE WIPERS SAT MOTIONLESS. 2. THE TWO WIPERS WERE LINKED TOGETHER AND COULD BE MOVED EASILY BY HAND. 3. THE RUNNING WIPER MOTOR WOULD NOT MOVE THE WIPERS. AT THAT POINT I REMOVED THE 3 BOLTS HOLDING THE WIPER MOTOR IN PLACE AND LOOKED INSIDE THE WIPER ARM CAVITY. I FOUND WIPER DRIVE ARM TO BE DETACHED FROM THE ROTATING ARM ON THE DRIVE MOTOR SHAFT. I HAVE DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHS AVAILABLE IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE THEM. THE REASON FOR MY REPORT IS THIS: THE VAN WHICH THIS HAPPENED TO IS A 1994 GRAND VOYAGER, SAME BODY STYLE AS THE 1993.   • Consequence: PERSONAL INJURY COULD OCCUR IF THE BOLTS BREAK ALLOWING THE LIFTGATE TO FALL SUDDENLY.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT FOR LOOSE FASTENERS, IF THE FASTENERS ARE LOOSE, THE STRUT (AND INTEGRAL BOLTS) WILL BE REPLACED. It has suffered from engine failure, unfixable ABS issues by Chrysler, abysmal mileage, and transmission noise (even on the second transmission). Due to these issues, I cannot trust this van for any trip over 30 km (20 miles).

    Van has been incredibly dependable with very few repairs needed. The most expensive repair was the replacement of the intank fuel pump which cost $525. While I was a little disappointed with the fuel mileage, getting around 20MPG on the road and 17 in town, I have been very pleased with the vehicle overall. The white paint is beginning to peel at the roof area, but there has been no oil consumption at 200,000 miles thanks to regular oil and filter changes every 3-5,000 miles.

    We purchased this minivan second-hand, and it came with a warranty extension which turned out to be a wise decision. Although we experienced some issues with the transmission and air conditioning, we were able to have them repaired under warranty. We have noticed some wear and tear on the interior plastic molding, but it is easily fixable. The sliding door has come off its track a few times, but we were able to fix it without any major issues. Unfortunately, we did lose a favorite cassette when the Infinity cassette player stopped working. We have had some trouble with the driver seat recline mechanism, but we are working to resolve it. Overall, we have had some challenges with this minivan, but we are doing our best to address them.

    We love using our Voyager as our non-sport utility vehicle! It's perfect for hauling antiques, yard materials, home improvement supplies, and donations to goodwill. When we bought it, the dealer put in a new transmission for free, and since then, the engine and transmission have been working just fine. While it may not be as reliable as a Lexus, Honda, or Toyota, it's still acceptable. The seating is incredibly comfortable, especially with the four captain's chairs, and I love all the cool gauges and features!

    This van has 179K miles on it and is still going. We've done expected repairs and replacements on it, nothing too extensive. It's way more comfortable than new minivans we've rented for a couple of trips. Although the heater takes a while to warm up, it's still a reliable ride. The A/C only blows from the dash, so the back of the car can get pretty warm in summer. We plan to keep driving this van until it finally gives up.

It has had a rebuilt transmission, and I recently replaced it, making it the third transmission including the original. The van rides, drives, and looks like new, except for the peeling paint on the roof. All accessories work great, and it has never needed any major repairs, except for the transmissions. However, it will soon need new suspension to replace the original, new brakes that are three years old, and a new computer to address shifting issues with the rebuilt transmission.

    We bought this van as a replacement for a Mercury Villager that we really didn't like and had only owned for three months. Despite having over 230,000 miles on the clock (we bought it with around 68,000), we've only had to replace the water pump, brakes, hoses, tailpipe, and one transmission. Regular maintenance and fluid changes have kept this baby running smoothly. It still looks pretty good considering its age and mileage, and unlike many old cars, it doesn't have any broken door locks or knobs. It cleans up nicely.
