2022 Honda Passport problems

The Honda Passport is a line of sport utility vehicles (SUV) from the Japanese automaker Honda. Originally, it was a badge engineered version of the Isuzu Rodeo, a mid-size SUV sold between 1993 and 2002. It was introduced in 1993 for the 1994 model year as Honda's first entry into the growing SUV market of the 1990s in the United States. The first and second generation Passport was manufactured by Subaru Isuzu Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana. Like various other Honda models, it re-used a name from their motorcycle division, the Honda C75 Passport. The other two name candidates were Elsinore and Odyssey, the latter would be re-used a year later on a minivan.

The Passport was a part of a partnership between Isuzu and Honda in the 1990s, which saw an exchange of passenger vehicles from Honda to Isuzu, such as the Isuzu Oasis, and trucks from Isuzu to Honda, such as the Passport and Acura SLX. This arrangement was convenient for both companies, as Isuzu discontinued passenger car production in 1993 after a corporate restructuring, and Honda was in desperate need of an SUV, a segment that was growing in popularity in North America as well as Japan during the 1990s. The partnership ended in 2002 with the discontinuation of the Passport in favor of the Honda-engineered Pilot.

In November 2018, Honda announced that the Passport nameplate would return as a two-row mid-size crossover SUV slotted between the CR-V and Pilot. The third-generation Passport was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 27, 2018. It is built at Honda's factory in Lincoln, Alabama, and available for the 2019 model year.

Common 2022 Honda Passport problems

The Honda Passport, a midsize SUV known for its reliability and performance, has been reported to have several common issues by its owners. While Honda is generally recognized for producing dependable vehicles, it is crucial for owners to be aware of these potential problems to make informed decisions about maintenance and repairs.

One of the most frequently reported issues with the 2022 Honda Passport is related to the transmission. Some owners have experienced problems such as transmission slipping, rough shifting, or difficulty in shifting gears. These issues can lead to decreased performance, reduced fuel efficiency, and potential safety concerns. If you notice any unusual behavior with your transmission, such as delayed engagement or harsh shifting, it is advisable to have it inspected and serviced by a qualified mechanic. In some cases, a transmission fluid flush or software update may be necessary to resolve the issue.

Another common problem reported by Honda Passport owners is electrical system malfunctions. These issues can range from intermittent malfunctions to complete failures and may affect various components, including power windows, door locks, and the infotainment system. Faulty wiring, blown fuses, or defective components can cause these problems. Regularly checking your electrical system and addressing any abnormalities promptly can help prevent further damage. If you encounter issues with your power windows or infotainment system, it is recommended to have a professional diagnose and repair the problem.

Engine misfires are also a relatively common issue with the Honda Passport. This problem can cause rough idling, reduced power, and decreased fuel efficiency. Engine misfires are often caused by faulty ignition coils, spark plugs, or fuel injectors. Regular maintenance, including replacing spark plugs and maintaining a clean fuel system, can help prevent and address engine misfire problems. If you notice any unusual engine behavior, such as hesitation or a check engine light indicating a misfire, it's important to have it inspected by a mechanic to determine the underlying cause.

Vibration and unusual noises are also among the commonly reported 2022 Honda Passport problems. These vibrations may be felt through the steering wheel, brake pedal, or even the entire vehicle. Brake-related problems, such as squeaking or grinding noises, premature wear of brake pads, or brake pedal pulsation, are also common issues with the 2022 Honda Passport. Problems can arise due to worn brake components, contaminated brake fluid, or improper brake system maintenance. Regular brake inspections and servicing are crucial for ensuring the safety and reliability of your vehicle.

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Honda, alleging that 2019-2022 Honda Passport SUVs equipped with 9-speed automatic transmissions have defects that can cause shifting problems, delayed acceleration, sudden or harsh acceleration, and other issues related to the transmission. If you own a 2019-2022 Honda Passport with a 9-speed transmission and are experiencing any of these problems, it may be worth consulting a qualified mechanic or contacting Honda for further assistance.

In conclusion, while the Honda Passport is generally a reliable vehicle, it is essential for owners to be aware of these common problems and address them promptly to ensure the safety, performance, and longevity of their vehicles. Regular maintenance, following recommended service intervals, and addressing any issues promptly can help mitigate potential problems and keep your Honda Passport running smoothly on the road.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H66NB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The idle stop system comes on when I must apply my brakes and stop - for example at a red light. This week, more than once, after when the idle stop system came on, the care stalled. Both times, I was in traffic and this created a dangerous situation for me. When I took my foot off the brake and touched the gas to proceed when the light turned green, the car stalled. I had to put the car in park and restart the engine. When this happened, the cars behind me assumed I was going to move forward, and they had to hit their brakes to avoid hitting me. A warning light came on behind my steering wheel and said the idle stop was interrupted. The message said I needed to put the car in Park and restart the car. I am sure the traffic behind me at rush hour was not happy. Thank goodness this did not happen while I was starting to make a left turn, I could have been hit if the car stalled in the intersection.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-17
  • VIN: 5FNYF7H54NB
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The cable that opens the fuel door has broken making it impossible to refuel the vehicle. The inside emergency release also will not work when the cable is broken. The vehicle can not be refueled until extensive disassembly has been performed and the cable replaced. This can take several days and much expense. The safety concern happens when the driver is far from home or in an undesirable location and runs out of fuel. This cable problem has occurred on a less than 3 yr old vehicle with less than 36,000 miles. Way too soon for a critical part to break down. The Honda dealership indicated that this has occurred before. This should be addressed as a safety hazard with a recall and inspection and an extended warranty for the repair.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-25
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H0XNB
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: While driving on one lane each way roads, my automatic emergency breaking would trigger on cars going in the opposite direction. This generally just had the breaking notification trigger and beep at me, but had ~ 12 incidents where my car would auto-break for cars going the other way, including an instance where the car behind me had to swerve around me to prevent an accident. I spent ~ 30 days working with my dealership on repairs, which included replacing all of the front-facing sensors and replacing all of the front facing cameras, but that did not 100% solve the issue. While driving recently, there are still incidents of the auto-breaking triggering on cars in different lanes or going in other directions.

The dealer said they find nothing wrong but I know that is not a correct assesment but a method of the dealer not to either fix it or they do not have a method to correct this problem. There are many instances of this same problem on Honda vehicles with electric power steering on the internet sites. I simply want them to address a safety issue which appears to be fairly common.

BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-02
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H66NB
  • Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: I have twice now attempted to get this recall fixed and the dealer —Ken Garf Honda of Riverdale, Utah— has refused to schedule the appointment within 60 days of being notified. I attempted to schedule the recall repair in July when first notified of the recall and was told they could not schedule it with the parts being ordered. They said they’d order the parts and contact me, but never did. Today at 10:30 a.m. MT I attempted to again schedule the recall repair and they again said it could not be scheduled until the parts are ordered and they gave me an estimated date of when they would get back to me of 90 days from today. I reminded them the law requires it to be repaired within 60 days of notice and they hung up on me. They are now refusing to take my calls.

Carry Handle, Shell, Base,Other/I am not sure PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-26
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H54NB
  • Components: Carry Handle, Shell, Base,Other/I am not sure
  • Summary: Since this seat is a rotational seat there are two windows on either side of the base that show whether or not the seat is locked. When the window shows green, it is locked and ready to use. When the window shows red it means the seat is not locked, and not ready to use. On one side of the seat the window shows green all the time, even when the seat is very much not locked it shows that it is. This is seemingly a safety concern since the window is there to ensure the safety of the child, and that the seat is ready to be used in a car that is being driven. It works on one side but it is not always convenient to have to walk around to the other side to check and make sure it is operational. I have been advised by CPST's to discontinue use of the seat until I can contact Evenflo but Evenflo is incredibly hard to get ahold of. The seat is available to be inspected upon request. My child could have potentially been in an unlocked seat while driving the vehicle because I almost always put her in on the side that the lock mechanism is broken, and I have no idea how long it has been like that. The seat has not been inspected by anyone yet, I have reached out to Evenflo and am awaiting a response in how to proceed.

The sensor and bolt were installed correctly and all systems functioned again. I was travelling at interstate highway speed of 70 mph when this occurred. The vehicle remained operable, but the alarms, display warnings and lack of accurate speed indication resulted in very confusing and troubled driving until I successfully exited the highway.

Negative 2022 Honda Passport car reviews

  1. Giles Beer 2024-10-01

The Trailsport trim does not include some of the creature comforts that were standard in the 2021 Touring model, such as the 10 speaker 540 watt audio system and the side doors acoustic glass. However, it does offer the same ground clearance as the '21 Touring AWD. The price of the Trailsport is $1,200 more than last year's Touring. It is worth noting that the track has grown, making it almost the same as an Odyssey, which may not be ideal for off-road adventures. Unfortunately, the Touring model has been discontinued. Overall, Honda has made some changes, but the Trailsport still has a lot to offer.

  2. Jordyn Kutch 2024-06-02

I test drove the Pilot first and it felt very spacious. Next, I drove the Passport (trailsport) and my wife initially loved it, but we ultimately decided it was too large for our needs. While it is comfortable and decent on fuel, the seats are super soft leather and the dash looks very cheap. Unfortunately, there is no foot swipe for the hatch, no cooled seats, and no rear heated seats. Additionally, the infotainment center had to be swapped due to glitching. Despite these drawbacks, the ride is still enjoyable and comfortable, with good fuel economy. However, the amenities are fairly standard for a car at this price point. Although it may last for years, we ultimately decided to get rid of the Passport after only 7 months of ownership due to frequent repairs. Overall, it's a nice car, but just not the right fit for us.
