2019 Honda Passport problems

The Honda Passport is a line of sport utility vehicles (SUV) from the Japanese automaker Honda. Originally, it was a badge engineered version of the Isuzu Rodeo, a mid-size SUV sold between 1993 and 2002. It was introduced in 1993 for the 1994 model year as Honda's first entry into the growing SUV market of the 1990s in the United States. The first and second generation Passport was manufactured by Subaru Isuzu Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana. Like various other Honda models, it re-used a name from their motorcycle division, the Honda C75 Passport. The other two name candidates were Elsinore and Odyssey, the latter would be re-used a year later on a minivan.

The Passport was a part of a partnership between Isuzu and Honda in the 1990s, which saw an exchange of passenger vehicles from Honda to Isuzu, such as the Isuzu Oasis, and trucks from Isuzu to Honda, such as the Passport and Acura SLX. This arrangement was convenient for both companies, as Isuzu discontinued passenger car production in 1993 after a corporate restructuring, and Honda was in desperate need of an SUV, a segment that was growing in popularity in North America as well as Japan during the 1990s. The partnership ended in 2002 with the discontinuation of the Passport in favor of the Honda-engineered Pilot.

In November 2018, Honda announced that the Passport nameplate would return as a two-row mid-size crossover SUV slotted between the CR-V and Pilot. The third-generation Passport was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 27, 2018. It is built at Honda's factory in Lincoln, Alabama, and available for the 2019 model year.

Common 2019 Honda Passport problems

The 2019 Honda Passport has been praised for its safety, technology, performance, interior, comfort, reliability, and value. However, some owners have reported common problems related to the vehicle's electronics, transmission, engine, and fuel system.

  • Electrical System Malfunctions: Several Honda Passport owners have reported electrical system malfunctions, including problems with the power windows, door locks, and the infotainment system. Issues may range from intermittent malfunctions to complete failures. Faulty wiring, blown fuses, or defective components can cause these problems. Regularly checking your electrical system and addressing any abnormalities promptly can help prevent further damage.
  • Transmission Issues: One of the most common 2019 Honda Passport problems is related to the transmission. Some owners have reported issues such as transmission slipping, rough shifting, or difficulty in shifting gears. These problems can lead to decreased performance, reduced fuel efficiency, and potential safety concerns. If you experience any unusual behavior with your transmission, such as delayed engagement or harsh shifting, it is advisable to have it inspected and serviced by a qualified mechanic.
  • Engine Misfires: Some Honda Passport owners have reported engine misfire issues. This problem can cause rough idling, reduced power, and decreased fuel efficiency. Engine misfires are often caused by faulty ignition coils, spark plugs, or fuel injectors. Regular maintenance, including replacing spark plugs and maintaining a clean fuel system, can help prevent and address engine misfire problems.
  • Fuel System Issues: A Honda Passport owner reported that their vehicle was throwing many system problems, including Vehicle Stability Assist Problem, Trailer Stability Assist, Emissions problem, and the check engine light being on. The vehicle had also gone into limp mode, limiting the owner to 35 mph. After checking online, the owner found that there were a few posts about people having these same issues, and after getting service, they found issues with either the fuel injectors or the fuel rail.
  • Infotainment System Issues: Some Honda Passport owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, including the display going blank, the backup camera not working, and the sound system crackling or not coming on at all. These issues can be frustrating for drivers, especially when they occur while on the move.

While Honda is known for producing reliable vehicles, routine maintenance, following recommended service intervals, and addressing any issues promptly can help mitigate potential problems and ensure the longevity of your Honda Passport. If you encounter any of these problems or any other issues with your Honda Passport, it is advisable to consult a qualified Honda technician or authorized service center for assistance.

SERVICE BRAKES,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-24
  • VIN: 5FNYF7H51KB
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The automatic emergency braking system engages in times when it is not appropriate to do so. The vehicle will flash the “brake” warning light on the dashboard, will shake the steering wheel, apply light braking, and in a few instances has applied hard braking. We have been unable to determine a specific trigger for this issue. The vehicle will engage this feature on strait roads with no other vehicles or obstructions on the road. It has happened during both rainy and sunny conditions. The vehicle has also exhibited this behavior when going up and down hills both with and without other vehicles present. The vehicle will do this sometimes when other vehicles enter our lane at a safe distance and at low speeds, at or below 30 mph. The vehicle has also done this at highway speeds of 55+ mph both with and without other vehicles or obstructions in the roadway. We have experienced this while driving curvy roads both with vehicles passing in the opposite lane of traffic and when no other vehicles are present. The feature appears to randomly engage at all speeds between 15+ mph to 70+ mph with or without vehicles on the roadway. It also doesn’t appear to matter if a vehicle is in our lane, an adjacent lane, or the opposite lane of traffic. This issue was identified and has been ongoing since the vehicle was purchased in October 2023. The issue happens at least 1 time most days the vehicle is driven but can range between 1 time and 3+ times each day. The vehicle is driven consistently 30+ miles each day with occasional trips of 300-500 miles in a single day. The other issue we have noticed is the rear cross traffic warning. We have noticed something’s this will engage when no other traffic or obstacles are present. We have also observed this feature failing to engage when a vehicle or obstacle is present. This issue does not happen often but has been observed enough that is has come to my attention as a potential issue.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-21
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H51KB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: BOTH SUN VISORS, DRIVER AND PASSENGER ARE EXTREMELY HARD TO DEPLOY, WITH SIGNIFICANT RESISTANCE ACCOMPANIED BY LOUD CREAKING NOISE. THEY ARE A DEFINITE HAZARD TO WHEN MOVING. I HAVE REPORTED THIS TO MY DEALER, AND HONDA AMERICA, AS WELL. AS THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY, MY ONLY OPTION IS TO HAVE THEM REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE. HAVING OWNED MULTIPLE HONDAS (AT LEAST 7) OF DIFFERENT MODELS, ALL ACCRUING MILEAGE BEYOND WARRANTY LIMITITATIONS, AND NEVER EXPERIENCING THE PROBLEM, I FIND THE SITUATION MOST FRUSTRATING AND PERPLEXING. HONDA AMERICA DISMISSES ANY RESPONSIBILITY ON THEIR PART AS 'NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR'. THE MOST SIMPLE OF MECHANICAL FEATURES IN THE UNT COULD LEAD TO TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS. I DOCUMENTED THE ISSUE AS AN INCIDENT OF 10/21/24, BUT IN FACT THE ISSUE OCCURS WHENEVER ONE DRIVES THE VEHICLE, AND HAS BEEN DOING SO A LONG TIME. I FELT CERTAIN HONDA WOULD ADDRESS WITH A SAFETY RECALL.

The image changes each time, but is often very hard or impossible to safely view what is behind vehicle while backing up. Vehicle is garage kept, no sun or water damage possible. This significantly increases the risk of a crash while backing up. Because the image is so distorted, it often looks like there is an object present, causing driver to swerve even though there is not really anything there. Many other 2019 Passport owners are reporting the same thing in online forums. Honda insists this is a malfunctioning camera, but will not accept it as a manufacturing defect.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-12
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H54KB
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: Warning system failure… all lights lit and systems did not work.car was drivable but with no safety mitigation systems. Happened suddenly while driving on hwy. displayed the following warnings: Transmission System Problem Blind Spot Info System Problem Power Steering System Problem Emissions System Problem Vehicle Stability Assist Problem Hill Start Assist Problem Traffic Stability Assist Problem Road Departure Mitigation System Problem Rear tailgate did latch not working The D for drive was blinking These safety systems put my driving at risk as I rely on them for safe driving, lane change ..etc Brought to dealer for second time and they insist I leave the vehicle on so they can check the error codes. Even had ready made sign “ do not turn vehicle off” for dashboard. Seems like significant problem and I’m not the only one. Evidenced by chatter on Honda web forums. My question is, why do all system failure lights activate? Why can’t they determine the failure after car is turned off. Isn’t that the purpose of fail codes? Why do all safety functions fail when one issue arises. Evidence points to a software bug that effects all these functions (yes including the rear latch) Dealer recommends replace the ABS module but is not sure. Last time they replaced the speed sensor. Seems they are unsure. Needs software fix !

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-19
  • VIN: 5FNYF7H96KB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The vehicle does not restart after entering 'Auto Idle Stop' even with latest software update by Honda. About 2 month ago, my car started to act weird and stopped restarting during traffic stops, causing dangerous situations. (I was waiting in the intersection to make left turn and the vehicle was stopped in the middle) I went to Honda dealership for repair, and they explained that its known issue and can be solved by software update. They promised that it won't happen again, but starting few days ago, it is doing it again. I went to the dealership again, and they are now saying that they have to replace the starter. I don't think it is a safe approach to let customer "test" the software and replace problematic part depending on the test outcome. I feel like Honda should update the software AND replace starter.

  • Consequence: Overcured tires may develop a break in the sidewall, resulting in sudden air loss or belt edge separation, which could lead to tread/belt loss. Either condition can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect all four tires and replace them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began April 22, 2021. Owners may contact American Honda Motor Co. customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is UA2.

  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2018-2020 Odyssey, 2019-2020 Passport, and 2019-2021 Pilot vehicles. Additionally, it can prevent the rearview camera image from displaying. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) numbers 101, "Control and Displays" and 111, "Rearview Mirrors."
  • Consequence: Operating a vehicle without a functioning instrument panel or rearview camera display increases the risk of a crash.

Negative 2019 Honda Passport car reviews

I was really interested in getting a Telluride, but unfortunately my Kia dealership didn't have any available. However, since my dealership also sells Honda's, I decided to take a look at the Passports and I was impressed with how roomy and powerful they are. While they are off-road capable enough for my needs, I did notice that the forward collision system can be a bit iffy at times, going off even when there's a shadow on the road or when going up a hill. This can be a bit frustrating, especially since it hits the brakes when it happens. I've heard that this is a common problem that Honda is working on fixing. Despite this issue, I'm happy with my decision to purchase the EX-L model, which has everything I need at a much more affordable price than the Elite model. Since the Passport is currently the 60th best-selling SUV for 2019, dealers are willing to offer great deals. I traded in my 2018 F150 for this vehicle and I'm glad to have made the switch. However, I did experience some issues with the radio constantly popping, even when the stereo was off. I brought this to the attention of the dealer, but the issue persisted. Unfortunately, after a year of ownership, I've had a lot of problems with this vehicle and I've looped Honda into the issues. While I'm disappointed with the problems I've experienced, I'm hopeful that Honda will be able to address them. I've spoken to other Passport owners and it seems that many of them have experienced similar issues. Despite my frustrations, I'm still grateful to be alive and I'm looking forward to finding a vehicle that better suits my needs.Sold it back to the dealer. Honda values its customers and products, and we are sorry to hear that you had a negative experience. We strive to provide the best possible service and products to our customers. Thank you for your feedback.

I was really looking forward to having ventilated or cooled seats on my new vehicle, as I didn't want to stick or sweat on the leather seats during the summer. However, I have discovered that there is no discernable airflow, which makes it uncomfortable to sit on during hot temperatures. Even on the highest setting, there is no airflow, which makes me question the purpose of the medium and low settings. Although there is a slight feeling of coolness once the cabin cools off, it's barely noticeable. Unfortunately, the technicians at Honda are unsure if this is how the seats are supposed to work. If you're looking for ventilated or cooled seats, I would recommend considering a different brand than Honda.

Since 1977, we have been a Honda family, starting with our Carolina Yellow Civic HB. While we loved our Passport, there were a few issues that made us lose faith in the vehicle. Despite the dealer's inability to duplicate the problem, the service department was one of the best around. However, the major issue that led us to trade in the vehicle was when it suddenly slammed on the brakes while driving home from shopping. Although it never happened again, we couldn't shake the feeling of unease and lost trust in the vehicle. Despite this, the Passport was a wonderful driving vehicle with tons of power, a quiet ride, and a spacious interior. We did have a few other minor issues, such as the lane keep feature and the placement of the Blind Spot Warning light, but overall it was a comfortable and safe car to drive. It would be better if the mirror were on the car door, rather than on the plastic inside the vehicle. The push button is a nice feature, but there is a noticeable hesitation when shifting from Park to Drive or any other gear. We appreciate Honda, but we kindly suggest that they improve this aspect.

Hello potential customers, we would like to bring to your attention some issues that have been reported with the infotainment system of this car. We understand that this may be concerning, but we want to assure you that we are working on a solution to address these issues. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and we appreciate your patience as we work to resolve this matter. If you have experienced any problems with your car, we encourage you to report them to the NHTSA site. Thank you for considering our car and we hope to earn your trust in the future. Not only do they fail to acknowledge the obvious, but their philosophy seems to be to insult their customers, as if they are crazy. In my case, I informed them that I had some videos showing the issues, but they still did not believe me. I hope that Honda in Japan takes notice of the poor service that Honda USA is providing, as it is tarnishing the brand.

Positive 2019 Honda Passport car reviews

I'm so glad I got my new Honda Passport! Even though I just got it on February 1, 2019, I fell in love with it from the moment I test drove it. The ride is so smooth, even on bumpy city roads, and it's incredibly comfortable. I haven't had anyone in the back seat yet, but I'm sure it's just as great back there!

  2. Chandler Auer 2024-11-27

I'm so glad you chose to replace your Honda Element with this amazing vehicle! It's like an Element on steroids, with plenty of room and a high seating position that's perfect for seniors!

  3. Weldon Greenfelder 2024-11-13

The vehicle is quite spacious, even more so than the CRV. It has ample power and a push button shift, which may take some getting used to. The driving response is good, although not as quick as some other models. The cargo space is plentiful and the seats fold down in a much flatter profile. The overall visibility is very good. While Honda's plain Jane approach is noticeable, it's still acceptable. However, there is room for improvement in terms of better usability features. Incorporating more technology would be a great addition. The safety and reliability tests are still pending, but they are expected to be great.

  4. Josiah Wilderman 2024-10-21

I never give full stars in a review as I believe nothing is 'perfect', but I absolutely love my Passport! I've been driving it for 3 months now and there are so many things to love about it. The seats are incredibly comfortable and the cabin is spacious and roomy. The cargo space is unbeatable and the start-stop feature works flawlessly. The ride is smooth and the high driving position gives you a commanding view of the road. However, there are a few things that could be improved. The radio can be a bit glitchy and the acceleration is more of a tap than a punch. Additionally, the safety features can be a bit over-sensitive at times, such as when an oncoming truck is on the other side of a 2 lane road. These issues can be frustrating, but it's important to remember that we are in a transitional time for cars and there is a lot of new technology to handle. It's to be expected that there may be some hiccups along the way. That being said, it's always a good idea to purchase the warranty package to cover any potential issues. The finance guy at the dealership told me that they don't make their money on the car purchase anymore, but rather on the service fees and labor rates. If you plan on keeping the car for longer than the manufacturer warranty, it's definitely worth considering. Overall, I highly recommend the Passport and think it's a great choice for anyone in the market for an SUV.
