2009 Cadillac Dts problems
The Cadillac DTS is a full-size car that was built by the American company Cadillac from 2005 until May 2011. It is a four-door sedan that comes in five- or six-seat variants. The DTS debuted at the 2005 Chicago Auto Show and was manufactured at GM's Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly factory. It uses GM's G-platform for front-engine, front-wheel-drive automobiles. The DTS was a very mildly revised iteration of the eighth-generation Deville, using the brand's new naming convention, set by the CTS and STS. Writing for the Los Angeles Times, noted reviewer Warren Brown called the DTS "a large, exceptionally comfortable front-wheel-drive luxury sedan." The nameplate DTS is an acronym for DeVille Touring Sedan.
Production and specifications
Compared to its Deville predecessor, the DTS was mildly restyled rather than fully redesigned, featuring revised front-end sheet metal, front fascia, as well as rear decklid, rear quarter, and rear fascia.
The DTS used GM's G-platform, as denoted by the 4th letter in the VIN), and was powered by a transverse 32V Northstar V8, which produced 275 bhp (205 kW) in "Standard", "Luxury" and "Premium" trims. The DTS Platinum was equipped with 292 bhp (218 kW) version.
The base MSRP for the DTS at time of introduction was US$41,195 (equivalent to $64,300 in 2023) which was over 10% lower than the DeVille model it had replaced.
The DTS offered front bucket seats with overall seating for five passengers, and six passenger (i.e., front bench) seating available as an optional feature.
Standard features included multiple airbags, bi-functional xenon high-intensity discharge HID headlamps, leather seating surfaces, and power seats. Optional equipment included heated and cooled front seats and a heated rear seat, rain-sensing wipers, Bose audio system, DVD navigation, automatic dimming headlights, adaptive cruise control and Magnetic Ride Control suspension. A Platinum package became available in 2007 with special interior trim, badging, and other amenities.
GM phased out its small GM fender badges for all its vehicles, starting during the 2010 model year, including those on the DTS.

Common 2009 Cadillac Dts problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2009 Cadillac DTS, several common problems have been reported:
- Key Knocked Out of Run Position: A key knocked out of the run position can cause a loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking, which increases the risk of a vehicle crash. This issue poses a significant safety concern as it can lead to a sudden loss of control over the vehicle, especially while driving.
- Tire Pressure Warning Light: The tire pressure warning light indicates issues with one or more tires, such as low air pressure, high pressure, slow leaks, or flats. Monitoring tire pressure is crucial for safe driving and fuel efficiency, and addressing this warning promptly can prevent tire-related problems on the road.
- Fog Lights Indicator: Some Cadillac DTS models have a separate indicator for fog lights or daytime running lights. This light alerts drivers that these lights are on, enhancing visibility in specific driving conditions. Ensuring proper functioning of these lights is essential for driving safety, especially in low visibility situations.
- Lane-Keeping Assist System: The warning light for the lane-keeping assist system indicates that the system is active, helping the driver stay within their lane. This feature enhances driving safety by preventing unintentional lane departures, contributing to overall vehicle stability and control.
- Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) Issues: The ABS warning light indicates potential issues with the anti-lock braking system, ranging from faulty speed sensors to low brake fluid levels. Addressing problems with the ABS promptly is crucial for maintaining optimal braking performance and vehicle safety.
These common problems reported by owners of the 2009 Cadillac DTS highlight various safety and maintenance issues that drivers should be aware of to ensure the proper functioning and safety of their vehicles. Regular maintenance, prompt attention to warning lights, and addressing any reported issues can help mitigate these problems and ensure a safe driving experience.

- Summary: I FILED A COMPLAINT IN 2016 (COMPLAINT NO. 10823262) RELATED CORROSION OF THE REAR BRAKE LINES. THIS COMPLAINT IS SIMILAR BUT RELATED TO CORROSION OF THE FRONT BRAKE LINES IN WHICH I AGAIN HAD A SIMILAR LIFE THREATENING EXPERIENCE. THE ORDINARY "CORRODED" STEEL LINES WERE REPLACED WITH "VINYL COATED" LINES. I NEVER HEARD BACK ON THE 2016 COMPLAINT; WHAT IS GM DOING TO PROTECT CADDY OWNERS OR ALERTING THEM OF THIS SITUATION?

- Date Of Incident: 2019-03-09
- VIN: 1G6KD57Y99U
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: VEHICLE WOULD NOT START WHEN ATVTRAIN STATION. HAD TO LEAVE OVERNIGHT AND HAD IT TROUBLESHOT IN AM. A FAULTY FUEL PUMP RELAY WAS THE SUPPOSED CAUSE. CHANGED THE RELAY ON A WEDNESDAY MORNING AND CAR WAS GOOD TILL SATURDAY AFTERNOON WHEN IT STALLED OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF ROUTE 9 IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. AT THE TIME MY WIFE AND GRANDSON WERE IN THE CAR. I HAD TO PUSH THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROAD LUCKILY INTO A STRIP MALL WITH AN AUTO PARTS STORE. REMOVED GRANDSON AND CAR SEAT FROM VEHICLE TO ACCESS THE RELAY IN REAR CIRCUIT BOARD. VERY HOT. I WENT IN AND GOT NEW RELAY AND HAD TO CHANGE IT IN THE PARKING LOT. WENT STRAIGHT HOME TO DROP OFF WIFE AND GRANDSON. WENT BACK OUT TO TEST DRIVE AND SEE IF PROBLEM WAS FIXED. WORKED FOR A LITTLE WHILE AND STALLED OUT AGAIN. AGAIN RELAY BURNING HOT. HAD SON GET A NEW RELAY AND CHANGED IT AGAIN AND BROUGHT VEHICLE HOME. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS NOW COME ON SO I TESTED VEHICLE WITH IBD MINISTER AND GAVE ME A P0230 CODE WHICH IS FOR A BAD FUEL PUMP RELAY WHICH I ALREADY KNOW. I AM GOING TO CALL CADILLAC DEALERSHIP AND HAVE IT LOOKED AT. I AM VERY SURPRISED THAT THERE ISN'T A RECALL ON THIS AS IT IS A LIFE AND SAFETY HAZARD.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-11-22
- VIN: 1G6KD57969U
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: HAVE BEEN SMELLING GAS AFTER FILL UPS FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. EACH TIME I FILL IT AND PARK IT IN MY GARAGE IT FILLS WITH GAS FUMES THAT COULD EXPLODE AND KILL SOMEONE UNAWARE. ODOR LEAVES AFTER DRIVING 30 MILES OR SO. GOT CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND O'REILY AUTO PARTS CHECK AND SAID IT SHOWED FUEL ISSUES. TOOK CAR TO MY GM DEALER AND THEY SAY NEED A NEW GAS TANK, A NEW GAS CAP AND NEW EVAPORATIVE LINES BECAUSE I HAVE A LEAKING GAS TANK LEAKING AT OR NEAR FILLING AREA, AND GAS CAP IS NOT GOOD AND LINES ARE LEAKING ACCORDING TO A "SMOKE" TEST. REPAIRS ARE $2,800. I AM 75 YRS OLD AND HAVE NEVER HAD A GAS TANK LEAK AT THE "NECK" AREA AFTER OWNING SOME 40 DIFFERENT CARS, SOME OF THEM VERY OLD. I BELIEVE THIS MAY BE A FACTORY DEFECTIVE PRODUCT AND A DANGEROUS ONE AT THAT. IT IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALER AND TOMORROW I WILL PAY $175 FOR THE SMOKE TEST BUT I CANNOT AFFORD TO FIX IT SO I WILL ONLY FILL IT TO THE 12 GALLON POINT INSTEAD OF FULL. PLEASE ADVISE IF THERE IS A RECALL OR PERHAPS OTHER CADILLAC DTS OWNERS WITH THIS OR A SIMILAR PROBLEM
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-07-14
- VIN: 1G6KD57969U
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: MY 2009 CADILLAC DTS RECENTLY HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING, IT WAS STEERING HARD WHEN MAKING RIGHT OR LEFT TURNS AND EVENTUALLY BEGAN MAKING NOISES. I TOOK IT TO MY GM DEALER AND THEY CHECKED THE HOSES AND FLUID RECEPTACLE. ALL THEY FOUND WAS THE RECEPTACLE WAS LOW ON POWER STEERING FLUID AND I PICKED UP A BOTTLE AT AN AUTO PARTS STORE AND THEN MY STEERING WAS OK. SEVERAL WEEKS LATER MY STEERING GOT VERY HARD AND I HAD TROUBLE STEERING IT SO I STOPPED AND ADDED MORE FLUID. I RETURNED TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD MY POWER STEERING LINE WAS LEAKING AT ONE END WHERE IT WAS ATTACHED TO SOME METAL. MY COST WAS $402 TO REPLACE THE ONE HOSE. THIS LEAKY HOSE MADE MY CAR VERY HARD TO STEER AND I CAN'T IMAGINE WHY A STRONG HOSE LIKE THIS ONE WOULD EVER LEAK ESPECIALLY ON A VEHICLE WITH BELOW AVERAGE ANNUAL MILEAGES. THE INCIDENT OCCURRED AROUND 61,700 MILES AND COULD HAVE CAUSED A BAD ACCIDENT
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

UPON INSPECTION, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE REAR FUSE BOX LOCATED UNDER THE BACKSEAT WAS VERY HOT AND A BURNING ODOR WAS PRESENT. THE CONTACT REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP RELAY AND THE VEHICLE OPERATED NORMALLY FOR SEVERAL DAYS; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE FAILURES WERE NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER AND LOCAL DEALER (GERRY LANE CADILLAC, 10945 REIGER RD, BATON ROUGE, LA) WERE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES, BUT NO ASSISTANCE WAS OFFERED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 105,000. *TT CONSUMER STATED BURNING FUEL REAR FUEL BOX UNDER REAR SEAT IS CAUSING CAR TO SHUT OFF ANYTIME. *JB

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-06-23
- VIN: 1G6KD57Y39U
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: THE BRAKE LINES IN MY 2009 CADILLAC DTS ARE COMPLETLY CORRODED,TO THE POINT THAT THEY ARE LEAKING AND NEED TO BE REPLACED. I NEVER EXPECTED TO SEE PLAIN STEEL BRAKE LINES IN A CADILLAC, THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN STAINLESS STEEL AT A MINIMUM. IN MY OPINION THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND SHOULD BE ADDRESSED. THE EXHAUST SYSTEM IS STAINLESS STEEL AND IS NOT NEEDED TO STOP THE CAR. I BET HONDA HAS STAINLESS STEEL BRAKE LINES. NO WONDER THAT MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE BUYING FOREIGN CARS.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

- Summary: I WAS BACKING MY CAR OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY, AS I BACKED ONTO THE ROAD,THE CAR SUDDENLY QUIT RUNNING. I TRIED RESTARTING IT,BUT IT WAS COMPLETELY DEAD...I HAD TO CALL A TOW TRUCK AND THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL CADILLAC DEALER..WHEN I WENT TO THE DEALER THE FOLLOWING DAY,I WAS INFORMED THAT THE FUSE BOX UNDER THE REAR SEAT HAD SHORTED OUT...I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOT ANY RECALLS ON THE FUSE BOX THAT THEY NEW OF..I WAS TOLD A NEW FUSE BOX AND ASSOCIATED COSTS WOULD RUN $716.00, I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO HAVE THE REPAIR WORK DONE.. THE FUSE BOX COST ALONE WAS OVER $400.00. MY CAR HAD 48,000 MILES ON IT WHEN THIS OCCURRED..I HAVE HAD MANY CARS IN MY TIME AND NEVER HAD A FUSE BOX SHORT OUT..IF THIS OCCURRED ON A HIGHWAY,I WOULD HAVE LOST P/S,,P/B ECT. AND THE RESULTS COULD HAVE BEEN FATAL...GM IS AWARE OF THIS,BUT TO MYKNOWLEDGE HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL.INCIDENTLY ,THE DEALERSHIP HAD FUSE BOXES IN STOCK......
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-09-11
- VIN: 1G6KD579X9U
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: WHEN TRAVELING ON HIGHWAY MY CRUISE CONTROL KEPT TURNING ITSELF OFF AND ON. A DRIVER TRAVELING BEHIND ME LET ME KNOW THAT MY BRAKE LIGHTS WERE STAYING ON AS IF I WERE RIDING THE BRAKE (WHICH I WAS NOT) AND THEN WOULD GO OFF AGAIN - THIS KEPT REPEATING. IT SEEMED THIS WAS WHY THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS NOT WORKING, AS IT WOULD GO OFF WHEN IT SEEMED LIKE THE BRAKE WAS ON & BACK ON WHEN THE BRAKE WENT OFF. I HAVE SINCE SEEN REPORTS ON LINE OF THIS HAPPENING WITH OTHER CADILLACS AND IS A PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH. THIS IS A SAFETY PROBLEM AS VEHICLES BEHIND ME DO NOT KNOW WHEN I AM ACTUALLY BRAKING. I FEEL THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL BUT HAVE NOT BEEN NOTIFIED OF ONE, NOR HAVE I FOUND ONE WHEN SEARCHING ON LINE. I HAVE SINCE LEARNED THAT OTHER VEHICLES (GM, BUT NOT CADILLACS) HAVE HAD SAFETY RECALLS FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-03-14

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-09-18
- VIN: 1G6KD57Y09U
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I PURCHASED MY 2009 DTS CADILLAC FOLEY IN NOV. OF 2008. PRESENTLY I HAVE ABOUT 35,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. I SERVICED MY BRAKES ABOUT A YEAR AGO. THERE HAS BEEN NO SIGN OF BRAKE FLUID LEAKING. IN DRIVING FROM CHICAGO NORTH TO HIGHLAND PARK ILLINOIS ON THE EXPRESSWAY, I HAD TO MAKE A SUDDEN STOP WHEN THE TRAFFIC SUDDENLY CAME TO A HALT IN FRONT MY VEHICLE. I WAS ABLE TO STOP WITHOUT AN INCIDENT. ON RESUMING DRIVING, THE BRAKE PEDAL NEEDED TO BE PUSHED TO THE FLOOR IN ORDER TO STOP THE CAR. I GOT OVER TO THE RIGHT LANE AND DROVE CAUTIOUSLY TO MY HOME AND THEN TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE SERVICE STATION WHERE I HAD THE BRAKES SERVICED. I WAS INFORMED THE BRAKE FLUID LINES WERE CORRODED AND WERE LEAKING. THERE HAD BEEN NO SIGNS OF LEAKING IN MY CARPORT CONCRETE FLOOR. THE SERVICE MECHANIC TOLD ME ON REPLACING THE TWO LINES TO THE REAR BRAKES AND THAT ALL OF THE LINES WERE ORDINARY STEEL. APPARENTLY THE SUDDEN STOP I MADE BURST THE CORRODED BRAKE FLUID LINES. THE SERVICE MECHANIC REPLACED THE LINES TO THE REAR BRAKE WITH VINYL COATED LINES, PHOTO ATTACHED. MY DAUGHTER AND I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED IF I HADN'T ALLOWED ENOUGH SPACE TO THE VEHICLE AHEAD FOR JUST SORT OF AN INCIDENT. THIS IS THE THIRD CADI THAT I HAVE OWNED SINCE YOUR OLDSMOBILE DIVISION WAS ELIMINATED. I WOULD STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT GENERAL MOTORS ISSUE AN ALERT TO CADI OWNERS AND OTHER GENERAL MOTORS VEHICLE OWNERS, OF THE NEED TO EXAMINE THE BRAKE LINES FOR CORROSION. FURTHER, IF THE PRESENT GM CARS DON'T USE COATED BRAKE LINES, THE COATED LINES NEED TO BE USED. MY CONCERN IS THAT OTHER CADI OWNERS NEED TO BE MADE AWARE OF THIS SITUATION. IN MY OPINION, CADI NEEDS TO NOTIFY CADI OWNERS THAT BRAKE LINES NEED TO BE INSPECTED IF OTHER ARE SERVICING CADI, IF INDEED CADI DOES BRAKE LINE INSPECTIONS AND TO PROVIDE CORROSION PROTECTED BRAKE LINES. 2009 Cadillac Dts recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2009 Cadillac Dts.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2011 Buick Lucerne, 2000-2005 Cadillac DeVille, 2006-2011 Cadillac DTS, 2006-2014 Chevrolet Impala, and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, a key knocked out of the run position will cause loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 23, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), and 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet). GM's number for this recall is 14299.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: GM IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006-2009 BUICK, LUCERNE; CADILLAC DTS; HUMMER H2; MODEL YEAR 2008-2009 BUICK ENCLAVE; CADILLAC CTS; MODEL YEAR 2007-2009 CADILLAC ESCALADE, ESCALADE ESV, ESCALADE EXT; CHEVROLET AVALANCHE, SILVERADO, SUBURBAN, TAHOE; GMC ACADIA, SIERRA, YUKON, YUKON XL; SATURN OUTLOOK; AND MODEL YEAR 2009 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A HEATED WASHER FLUID SYSTEM (HWFS). A RECALL WAS IMPLEMENTED IN 2008 TO ADD A FUSE TO THE CONTROL CIRCUIT HARNESS TO ADDRESS THE POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES OF A PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD (PCB) ELECTRICAL SHORT. HOWEVER, THERE HAVE BEEN NEW REPORTS OF THERMAL INCIDENTS ON HWFS MODULES AFTER THIS IMPROVEMENT WAS INSTALLED. THESE INCIDENTS RESULTED FROM A NEW FAILURE MODE ATTRIBUTED TO THE DEVICE'S THERMAL PROTECTION FEATURE. THE SIGNIFICANCE VARIES FROM MINOR DISTORTION TO CONSIDERABLE MELTING OF THE PLASTIC AROUND THE HWFS FLUID CHAMBER.
- Consequence: IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE HEATED WASHER MODULE TO IGNITE AND A FIRE MAY OCCUR.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL PERMANENTLY DISABLE AND REMOVE THE HEATED WASHER FLUID MODULE. I've owned several full-size Cadillacs, including a 2006 model prior to this one. While the 2006 DTS averaged 25 MPG or better on the road, this one only averages closer to 23 MPG. It's a bit disappointing, but overall, I'm very pleased with the car.

I used to own a 2006 DTS that I purchased in 2008 and it was a fantastic car. I was hoping to get another one, but with the current prices of new cars and interest rates, it wasn't feasible for me to buy a new Cadillac. Luckily, I came across a 2008 DTS lux III package with less than 60,000 miles for sale. Although it has some scratches and needs a good cleaning, the ride is just as I remember it - smooth and comfortable. It also has good fuel efficiency for its year, averaging 24 mpg on the highway. The car is quiet, has good acceleration, and boasts 80% of the features of a new car. The lumbar massage and cooled/heated seats are particularly impressive. I do wish that Cadillac had continued producing the DTS into the 2020s.

I noticed some great advice online and decided to look for a car that would be perfect for long rides. This car is just what I was looking for - it's spacious and quiet.

Congratulations on your new purchase! It's great to hear that you're enjoying the performance of your 2008 DTS, especially compared to your previous 2004 model. The H.I.D. headlamps, remote start, and quietness of the 08 are definitely impressive features. While it's understandable that you would have preferred nicer rims and higher quality sheet metal, it's still a fantastic car overall. I hope you're enjoying the ride! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the cloth on the side of your seats and the interior design. Your feedback is valuable and will be taken into consideration for future models. Once again, congratulations on your new car purchase!

I love my car, but repairs can be expensive. I have an oil leak and was quoted $4600 to fix it.

Hey there! Have you ever had to locate the starter in a Northstar engine? It's actually located under the intake. If you're ever in need of a torque converter solenoid repair, it should only cost around $28.00. However, if you need to change the entire solenoid, it can be a bit pricey at around $2300. It's also worth noting that most Northstar engines tend to use about 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles. Lastly, if you ever need a head gasket repair, it can be quite expensive. I've owned 4 Northstar Cadillacs myself, and while they may have some issues, they're still great cars overall. Thanks for reading!

The car is certainly comfortable and handles well, especially for its size. However, I did experience some issues with the drivetrain and electronics, which required me to take it to the shop at both 500 and 2000 miles. Unfortunately, the dealership did not offer a loaner car during these times, which was disappointing given the price I paid for the car. Overall, while I may not purchase another American car in the future, I appreciate the positive aspects of this one.
