Honda Passport 2023 problems

honda logo

The Honda Passport is a line of sport utility vehicles (SUV) from the Japanese automaker Honda. Originally, it was a badge engineered version of the Isuzu Rodeo, a mid-size SUV sold between 1993 and 2002. It was introduced in 1993 for the 1994 model year as Honda's first entry into the growing SUV market of the 1990s in the United States. The first and second generation Passport was manufactured by Subaru Isuzu Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana. Like various other Honda models, it re-used a name from their motorcycle division, the Honda C75 Passport. The other two name candidates were Elsinore and Odyssey, the latter would be re-used a year later on a minivan.

The Passport was a part of a partnership between Isuzu and Honda in the 1990s, which saw an exchange of passenger vehicles from Honda to Isuzu, such as the Isuzu Oasis, and trucks from Isuzu to Honda, such as the Passport and Acura SLX. This arrangement was convenient for both companies, as Isuzu discontinued passenger car production in 1993 after a corporate restructuring, and Honda was in desperate need of an SUV, a segment that was growing in popularity in North America as well as Japan during the 1990s. The partnership ended in 2002 with the discontinuation of the Passport in favor of the Honda-engineered Pilot.

In November 2018, Honda announced that the Passport nameplate would return as a two-row mid-size crossover SUV slotted between the CR-V and Pilot. The third-generation Passport was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 27, 2018. It is built at Honda's factory in Lincoln, Alabama, and available for the 2019 model year.

Common Honda Passport 2023 problems

The 2023 Honda Passport has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the transmission, electrical system, and engine.

Transmission Issues

One of the most common problems reported by Honda Passport owners is related to the transmission. Some owners have experienced issues such as transmission slipping, rough shifting, or difficulty in shifting gears.

Electrical System Malfunctions

Several Honda Passport owners have reported electrical system malfunctions, including problems with the power windows, door locks, and the infotainment system.

Engine Misfires

Some Honda Passport owners have reported engine misfire issues, which can cause rough idling, reduced power, and decreased fuel efficiency. Engine misfires are often caused by faulty ignition coils, spark plugs, or fuel injectors. Regular maintenance, including replacing spark plugs and maintaining a clean fuel system, can help prevent and address engine misfire problems. If you notice any unusual engine behavior, such as hesitation or a check engine light indicating a misfire, it’s important to have it inspected by a mechanic to determine the underlying cause.

Transmission System Problems

A 2023 Passport owner reported experiencing a lit-up dashboard with multiple error codes and alerts, including a Transmission System Problem. The vehicle also went into Limp Mode, which restricts the vehicle's power and speed to prevent further damage. The owner had the vehicle towed to a dealer for inspection and repair.

Vibration and Noise

A number of Honda Passport owners have experienced vibrations or unusual noises coming from different parts of the vehicle. These vibrations may be felt through the steering wheel, brake pedal, or even the entire vehicle.

Paint Quality and Rust Formation

Some Honda Passport owners have reported problems with the paint quality and rust formation on their vehicles. Paint chips, peeling, or bubbling can occur, particularly on the hood, roof, and doors. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including manufacturing defects, exposure to harsh environmental conditions, or inadequate paint preparation.

Honda Engine Recall

Honda announced a recall of nearly 250,000 vehicles in 2023 due to a manufacturing error that may damage the engine. A connecting rod bearing in the engines of Acura and Honda models is defective and could cause the engine to “run improperly or stall while driving, increasing the risk of a fire, crash, or injury.” The recall encompasses 2015-2020 Acura TLX and the 2016-2020 MDX, 2018 and 2019 Honda Odysseys, 2016, 2018 and 2019 Pilots, and Ridgelines manufactured between 2017 and 2019. Honda said owners will be notified by letter in early January, and that dealers will inspect, repair and replace the engines for free.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-18
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H68PB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My Auto-Electronic braking was randomly engaging while I was driving. It was unnecessary, & scary. It would just engage, then stop. Then, My Emissions Systems Light came on, & would NOT go off. I had to get to a safe place. The dealership told me to bring it to them, it NEVER WENT OFF THE WARNING WAS ON CONSISTENTLY. It Never Blinked or went off @ all. I was on the highway, & they kept it overnight. They told me they cleared it & THE EMISSIONS CODE NEVER CAME ON. YES, It DID. They still have it tonight bc I refused to take it back, when I was CLEARLY BEING TOLD I DID NOT SEE WHAT I SAW (EVEN PARKED) WHERE WOULD I GET THAT FROM IF THE LIGHT DIDN’T GO COME ON? They refused to acknowledge what happened, & as of right now I’m in a rental even though they wanted their rental back. It’s a 2023, bought brand new. Full Warranty, & They are putting People @ RISK. I DROVE AS SLOW AS I COULD, & FOLLOWED THE DIRECTIONS FROM THE OWNERS MANUAL. I Could have been re-ended, due to erratic braking, & my entire vehicle could be destroyed if HONDA REFUSES TO OWN UP TO THE MALFUNCTION. I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS W/THIS SUV SINCE THE 1st Week I bought it. I believe it should be taken back UNDER THE LEMON LAW! IT’S NOT SAFE! NOT even 7,000 miles on it yet. I bought it w/7 miles. IT started by saying I was departing my lane when I wasn’t for about a week, then the brakes would just slam on randomly. THEY SAID THEY RESET IT, they REFUSED TO CHANGE THE OIL @ 70%, had a new guy, who stated the EMISSIONS LIGHT DID NOT COME ON! It Did! I drove as slow as possible on the highway to get it to service bc I had NO CHOICE. They said the the camera was dirty, then the braking was fine, via the code went off, BUT DID NOT DRIVE IT. THEY LITERALLY CALLED ME A LIAR THAT THE EMISSIONS LIGHT DIDN’T COME ON. It was on when I drove it in, & left it. They DID NOT INSPECT EMISSIONS. Emissions has nothing to do with THEIR EXPLANATIONS. I don’t have an invoice yet, I refused taking it back. THEY HAVEN’T EVEN DRIVEN IT

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-04
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H55PB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The vehicle suffered an electrical failure while driving (55-60mph). During this electrical failure the engine shut off, had no power steering or brakes, and had to get the vehicle off the road and stopped under these conditions. After getting the vehicle stopped, the vehicle would not restart and vehicle ultimately had to be towed to a Honda dealership for diagnosis and repair. This has happened twice, (XXX) and (XXX), since an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and wiring harness were replaced under a warranty/recall/known defect on (04/12) at Gwinnett Place Honda in Duluth, Georgia. The first attempt to diagnose and repair this issue at Autonation Honda in Columbus, GA didn't uncover any error codes and the issue could not be reproduced so no actual repairs were made. The vehicle is now sitting at Honda in Albany, GA awaiting diagnosis and repair for a second time. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I looked through my rear mirror and saw all my back windshield shattered without any object hitting it, I'm glad I wasn't driving on the fwy or my son wasn't in the back seat. I reported to honda dealer and even do they agree to do a one time no cost replacement due to low mileage. They said they haven heard any cases of this safety manufacture defect.

LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-17
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H54PB
  • Components: LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I was traveling on a visible highway, no weather conditions and my vehicle snatched me into the other lane almost striking the vehicle next to me. I waited to see if it would happen again and then my AEB started just randomly slamming on breaks when vehicles in the oncoming lane were approaching. I contacted my local Honda Dealership (Walsh Honda, Macon, GA) they inspected the vehicle and found no issues. The advisor stated this issue has been reported before and there is nothing they can do because the system "is not a human and cant detect if the car is in another lane just the sensor bouncing off of the other car". I have since had more issues with the LKAS snatching me in and out of my lane and the AEB partially slamming on the breaks for no reason. I have had multiple cars and never experienced this with any other brands safety systems except the 2 Honda's I have owned.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-08
  • Number Of Injuries: 6
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H60PB
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Shortly after our purchase we started having issues with the vehicle, the backup camera is not functioning, the backup sensors are not functioning, the collision mitigation is braking abruptly while we are driving even when there are no objects in the surrounding area nearly causing us two accidents, our dashboard display has no function and the display flashes off and on. My nephew suffers from epilepsy, and he is unable to commute in my vehicle because the flashing colorful display lights trigger epileptic episodes. My partner has driven the vehicle when the vehicle’s braking system is abruptly initiated, the first time his chest was slammed into the steering wheel of the vehicle and the second time his head was slammed into the sun visor. I have taken my vehicle in several times because the car breaks abruptly while driving. The last time I took it in I injured my left arm and shoulder when the vehicle abruptly stopped, and my partner was slammed into the steering wheel while driving to work on the freeway. We had another incident where my partner's head was slammed into the sun visor. When I took my vehicle in, I was told there was there were no error codes then shortly after I received a notification regarding a recall for the issue I was having. We completed the recall, and we are still having the same issue. Yesterday 02/08/24 when I was driving home from work my car abruptly stopped/braked in the rain with no cars in front or to the side of me and I banged my knee on the side of the center counsel. While driving the vehicle will either brake or stall and will not accelerate while driving regardless of whether we are on the street or the freeway. This issue has become dangerous, and I would like to resolve this as soon as possible to avoid further injury to my partner and myself. There have been multiple incidents since the purchase of our vehicle on 01/24/23, all service repair attempts have been completed through Norm Reeves Honda West Covina

SERVICE BRAKES,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-02
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H6XPB
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Twice I had all kinds of safety alerts were scrolling on May 2nd ans august 7th.. First it was a fluid leak and cable. Second there was a piece of metal in the brakes. ABS sensor full of grease. Now sometimes Brakes is flashing for no reason (like going uphill) and if I need to brake at a higher speed on the freeway, the brakes make a sound of pots and pans rattling. As I have no confidence in the brakes, I tried downshifting but the car speeds up. From time to time the car speeds up or slows down without any reason as I am not using cruise control. Forward collision warning does not work properly, in fact collision mitigation system is not fiable. I get a warning sign for the back seats when there is nobody and nothing on the seats. Everything is very irregular.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-27
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H50PB
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Transmission, radio, and automatic braking system. Transmission lags when going slow. From a stop on a hill, the car did not accelerate when the gas pedal was pushed, almost causing a crash as I merged into oncoming traffic. It felt like it did not go into gear properly or was not recognizing the gears. Dealership advised it was the design of the transmission and not something they can fix. Auto brake sensors pick up cars that are not there, braking while driving. Especially noticeable on windy roads, though it has started to happen at stop lights. Radio has static and flashes white when operating with Bluetooth connection (Android product). Dealership recognizes and was able to replicate the sluggish feeling at low speeds, attempted to fix stereo (didn't work), and did not replicate the slow accelerate from a hill, but stated that there are issues with the transmission design.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-02
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H66PB
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: This has happened 7 times since I have owned the car (purchased April 2023). On regular asphalt roads in clear daytime weather with no cars in front of me (and usually no cars behind), the emergency braking system goes nuts and slams on the brakes and the wheel starts shaking. The roads have never been wet, and there has never been debris or other objects around; I live in a semi-rural area with no curbs, guardrails or other close peripheral objects that could confuse the system. It's bad enough that the front rotors became warped and I had to replace them or deal with rumbling brakes. It also almost caused an accident the one time there WAS someone behind me, as they almost rear-ended my vehicle. Fortunately, that driver was paying attention. I would take the vehicle back if it didn't have 11k miles on it already. Having your vehicle suddenly stop completely out of your control on the highway is going to get someone killed. Hopefully not me!

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-12
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H51PB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Adaptive cruise control and Lane keeping assistance warning lights pop-up sporadically on the dashboard. I have had the car serviced at several different Honda dealerships 5 plus times and every time they say that the reason why the warning lights pop up is because the battery is defective. I've only had the car for a couple of months in the battery has been replaced three times. The warning lights on the car and the battery dying and needing to be replaced by AAA and Honda at least three separate times has been a concern for me from the moment I got the car. March of this year. I filed a lemon law complaint with the state of Florida where I purchased sorry where I am leasing the vehicle from but I have relocated to the state of Kansas and have also filed a lemon law complaint with the attorney general in the state of Kansas and I've also contacted Honda America who is the leaseholder. This car is a lemon and I want my money back

Positive Honda Passport 2023 car reviews

  1. Woodrow Schaden 2024-11-26

I can tell you really love your new Passport Honda! It's great to hear that it has so many features, and the heated steering wheel sounds like a real winner. It's also fantastic that you were able to find a car that met your needs without having to deal with extra seats. Thanks for sharing your experience!

  2. General Hudson 2024-11-24

You can count on this car's reliability both on and off the road. I'm glad to hear that you're happy with it!

  3. Colt Sauer 2024-11-14

I've owned the 2023 Honda Passport Trail Sport for only a brief time, but I'm already really impressed with its performance, ride, and even fuel economy (I averaged 26 mpg on a recent trip). The V6 280 HP engine is fantastic, and a real differentiator within the segment, as it is powerful and responsive. The vehicle is super roomy yet handles quite nicely for its size. The rugged trail sport look and the Honda reliability make this a stand-out choice. I highly recommend it!

  4. Miller Dickens 2024-10-11

Your new Passport drives excellently, has most of the bells and whistles, is very roomy, and looks great!

  5. Gerson Ortiz 2024-08-24

Great looking vehicle! It handles well and the set-up system is fairly easy to learn. I'm extremely happy with the cargo area, which was the main reason for my purchase. I just wish there were options for cloth seats and no sunroof. I live in the South and I'm concerned about the leather seats, which are the only seat cover option, and the sunroof. Other than that, I'm having a blast driving my new Passport!
