2021 Honda Passport problems

honda logo

The Honda Passport is a line of sport utility vehicles (SUV) from the Japanese automaker Honda. Originally, it was a badge engineered version of the Isuzu Rodeo, a mid-size SUV sold between 1993 and 2002. It was introduced in 1993 for the 1994 model year as Honda's first entry into the growing SUV market of the 1990s in the United States. The first and second generation Passport was manufactured by Subaru Isuzu Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana. Like various other Honda models, it re-used a name from their motorcycle division, the Honda C75 Passport. The other two name candidates were Elsinore and Odyssey, the latter would be re-used a year later on a minivan.

The Passport was a part of a partnership between Isuzu and Honda in the 1990s, which saw an exchange of passenger vehicles from Honda to Isuzu, such as the Isuzu Oasis, and trucks from Isuzu to Honda, such as the Passport and Acura SLX. This arrangement was convenient for both companies, as Isuzu discontinued passenger car production in 1993 after a corporate restructuring, and Honda was in desperate need of an SUV, a segment that was growing in popularity in North America as well as Japan during the 1990s. The partnership ended in 2002 with the discontinuation of the Passport in favor of the Honda-engineered Pilot.

In November 2018, Honda announced that the Passport nameplate would return as a two-row mid-size crossover SUV slotted between the CR-V and Pilot. The third-generation Passport was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 27, 2018. It is built at Honda's factory in Lincoln, Alabama, and available for the 2019 model year.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-19
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H5XMB
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I purchased this vehicle from a dealership 1 week ago. Prior to receiving the vehicle it had been serviced by the dealership and had passed inspection. The vehicle is a 2021 with low miles and appeared to be in very good condition with no appreciable rust, corrosion or wear. Since purchase, I have driven the vehicle about 160 miles on my daily commute. I did have issues with one of the automatic systems, but will submit that as a separate report as I do not believe it is related to this issue. Tonight I was driving home from work on a hilly, curved two-lane road and came upon a vehicle parked across the opposite lane and slightly into my lane. I was traveling at about 45 mph and pressed on the brakes suddenly but with reasonable force in order to slow to pass with caution. I immediately felt loss of brake pressure and did not stop as expected. I continued on at the same speed and passed very close to the rear of the stopped vehicle. Fortunately, I was able to swerve to avoid a collision. Once the brake pedal was pressed completely to the floor, the vehicle began to decelerate gradually as I continued down the hill. No warning lights or alerts came on at that point. At the bottom of the hill, I turned onto a flat quiet road to drive slowly and assess the situation. I determined that the brakes were compromised and that most pressure had been lost. I parked the vehicle and about 15 minutes later turned it off and back on and numerous warning systems came on saying that the brake fluid was low and other steering and traction control systems were compromised. I got out of the vehicle and brake fluid was pooled on the ground by the rear tire on the driver's side. When the roadside assistance person arrived we confirmed the leak by putting more brake fluid in, which gushed out onto the ground when the brakes were applied. The vehicle was transported by flatbed to a repair shop. There was no warning prior to this incident and no emergency system alert until well after.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-23
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H58MB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I have experienced multiple instances where the vehicle's transmission abruptly downshifts into lower gears, significantly reducing speed and creating a hazardous situation. This unexpected behavior has occurred on the Interstate, both while merging onto the highway and during regular driving conditions. On two separate occasions, my daughter was driving the vehicle when the transmission malfunctioned while driving on the Interstate. She was terrified as she believed she was losing traction and was unable to accelerate properly, putting her life and the lives of others at risk. I have personally experienced this issue as well when attempting to merge onto the Interstate under clear and dry road conditions. The vehicle would not exceed 35 mph, creating a dangerous situation. To rectify the issue, I had to pull over to the side of the road, place the car in park, and then put it back in drive to regain normal acceleration. I have used a code reader to check for any diagnostic trouble codes, but none were present. However, a blinking traction control light illuminated during these incidents, indicating a potential issue. I am deeply concerned about the safety implications of this problem.

I drove to the Honda dealership and found out it was my microchip for my honda, the main microchip for all of the safety and system controls were dead/bad and that it would need to be replace. I was told by the service manager that without the micro chip the vehicle would no longer be drivable as it controls power steering system, brakes system, lane departures, etc. If I would have ignored those warning lights, all of those systems all systems would have failed putting my life at risk and others in their vehicles as well . My vehicle was bought with 3 miles on the speedometer and was only 2 years old at the time of this occurrence.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-25
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H93MB
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I have encountered two types of brake issues: 1) my vehicle seems to flash BRAKE occasionally when oncoming vehicles pass by for no reason - they are not entering my lane or doing anything that should cause the message to flash. The vehicle type does not seem to matter - they have been old and new models, and have been both cars and trucks. My vehicle has only visually warned, but does not engage brakes, so no further safety issue is involved. It has done it frequently on some days and then none for awhile. We have tried to make note of vehicle type and model for consistency, but have not found any. 2) If my vehicle has its cruise control on (which is often) and a vehicle in front of me moves into a left-turn lane to turn - often with plenty of notice - my vehicle will engage it’s brakes and slow down even though there is no danger of hitting the other vehicle. So long as I take it out of cruise control, it will continue on driving. I suspect that if cruise control is not disengaged, it could fully brake and cause a bigger issue of an injury or accident.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-23
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H56MB
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I’ve had several incidents where my vehicle has forced me to a screeching hault when not needed. Most recently it did, and I was almost rear ended by a large UHaul truck while my baby was in the backseat. This is extremely dangerous. This anti-collision system activates while on turns and when nothing else is happening around the vehicle. This is a safety feature that makes the vehicle more unsafe.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-13
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H04MB
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Since purchasing the vehicle in December 2023 with ~36,000 miles there have been two instances where the automatic brake warning has activated. Both events occurred while entering a corner between 30-50 mph with no other vehicle in the area or obstructions to be noted. The passport briefly activated the automatic brake warning, with the flashing indicator occuring on the main dash display for roughly 3-5 seconds. Following this brief period of indication the vehicle returned to it's normal operation. No accidents or injuries were sustain from these spurious events.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-17
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H02MB
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I have had multiple instances where the car appears to engage the brakes to prevent a collision, although I don't see any obstruction. It also makes the alarm sound indicating that I should brake as well. This occurs only on highways at highway speeds. It lasts for a few seconds and the car slows down significantly.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-15
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H59MB
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The automatic emergency braking system will turn on when there is no danger. It happens often. The system is fooled easily. Yes it’s available for inspection. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? With normal driving conditions this is not a huge problem but if this were to happen with slick roads. I could see this causing an accident. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? No - I’m not sure how this would be done. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-25
  • VIN: 5FNYF7H51MB
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The Forward Collition Mitigation System is constantly braking on its own for no apparent reason. It happens a lot when going around a slight right turn and it interprets cars coming the opposite direction in the other lane as a trigger to start braking. It is a very dangerous situation each time, so I turn off that feature every time I start driving now to avoid it.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-17
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H5XMB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The emergency collision system constantly actives when there is no need for it to activate. It’s more of a safety hazard. I have just under 40 years of driving experience, former mechanic, and police officer for over 20 years. My professional opinion is, Honda needs to correct this problem. Thanks.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-14
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H57MB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: On Sunday April 14 while driving on the LIE middle lane a person driving at a high speed went from right side across to left lane in front of me when all of a sudden the brakes activated itself and my car nearly came to a stop nearly causing a car behind me to rear end me. This happened several times before while driving approaching vehicles in front scaring my family and I. Now my CMBS lights are permanently on on the dash. This system is nerve racking and will cause a severe fatal crash. Many people on several platforms are complaining about the same or similar issues. And understand an investigation has begun. Something needs to be done to resolve this issue. I have owned my 2021 Honda passport since November of 2023. With 19k miles.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-17
  • VIN: 5FNYF7H59MB
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The passport flashes BRAKE and steering wheel shakes for no reason. I’ll be driving down the road nothing near and it does this. A few times it’s actually applied the brakes. Thank goodness no one was behind me as it potentially could have caused an accident. This occurs daily. Especially if I am driving on a 2 lane road

SERVICE BRAKES,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-25
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H5XMB
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: No warning messages on dashboard. The drivers side mirror goes off like there's something there but there's nothing. Same with the braking display light comes on when I'm no where near anything, yet I've had cars pull out in front of me thankful no crash has happened because it doesn't go off then. I plan to take it into the dealership soon. I can't give an estimate of how long exactly it's been doing this. Especially side mirror warning. That's been going on. The braking thing has probably been a month now

LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-28
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H99MB
  • Components: LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The sensors simply don’t work. CMBS system constantly raises warnings, often alarming me as a driver, almost creating accidents. On one occasion, coming into a turning lane of intersection with green arrow and cars moving forward into left turn, CMBS actually applied the brakes for about 1 second, alarming me and causing the driver behind me to react as well. There’s no permanent disabling of this feature, which is a mistake by mfg, and we often forget to turn off starting each drive. Blind spot is often throwing false alarms. Lane detection too, but we permanently turn off lane detection.

Negative 2021 Honda Passport car reviews

  1. Garland Mosciski 2024-11-20

The 2021 Passport (My biggest blunder) has less than 3k miles on it. While it has some great features, I did notice a few things that could be improved. For taller drivers, the legroom and seat may feel a little tight. Additionally, the passenger seat only has 4 positions on the Elite model. However, for the price, it still offers a lot of value. While it may not have as many bells and whistles as my 17-year-old Chevy Trailblazer, it still has a lot to offer. Shorter passengers may find it a bit uncomfortable as their legs cannot fully extend to the floor. The transmission can take a bit of time to engage when put in gear and can jerk when shifting down the road. The center console is a deep cavern with a sliding top, which I thought would be a decent change from the old console types. However, it is so deep that it can be difficult to organize inside. Despite these minor issues, it's still a great SUV. While it may be slow off the line, it's important to remember that it is an SUV. Although it could come with more features, it's still a top-of-the-line SUV. Unfortunately, the sunroof has been an all-out failure, as it fails to close and just closes part of the way before reopening. Overall, I may not buy this model again, but it still has a lot to offer and is worth considering.

I purchased a vehicle at the end of 2020. Unfortunately, in July 2021, I noticed drops of fluid on my garage floor. At first, I thought it was just some fluid that had splashed up from the road, but the drops continued to increase over the following weeks. I decided to take it to a Honda dealer, and they diagnosed a bad seal on the torque converter. I was surprised that this happened with less than 7,000 miles on my new vehicle. I am concerned about what other vehicle problems I may encounter when my warranty expires. The dealer had my car for repair for 9 days and had to completely remove the car body from the chassis. I have pictures from the dealer to document the issue. I bought this vehicle brand new with less than 200 miles on it for over $40,000. I hope this is not a sign of things to come, but only time will tell.

I currently drive a Subaru Outback 3.6R, which is a great car, but I'm looking for more cargo room and better handling. After researching, the Honda Passport seemed like the perfect fit, with 41 cu ft of cargo space compared to Subaru's 35 cu ft. I was excited to see a company prioritize this feature, as many other cars in this category have meager specs. I test drove an Elite model with all the options, and it handled well on the highway. The seats were comfortable, although they looked a bit flimsy due to their thinness. The armrest is a small piece that flips up and down, which seemed insubstantial for a car with a $45,000 price tag. While I could afford it with a trade-in of my current vehicle, I'm not sure if I want to spend my hard-earned cash on it. I do have a roof-top box for my Subaru that works fine. However, the parking brake is located on the left side of the vehicle, which is extremely annoying as it hovers above where I would park my left foot. As someone who likes to move my feet and legs a bit to keep the circulation going, this would bother me to no end. Overall, the Honda Passport seems like a great car, but the parking brake placement is a deal breaker for me.It seems like the brake placement on the Passport 2021 Elite is not very ergonomic. In comparison, my 2012 Outback has a convenient push button for the brake. I'm not sure why Honda chose to place it in such an intrusive spot for the driver. Personally, I have decided not to purchase the Passport 2021 Elite, but I may consider the Touring package to save some money.

Your 2021 passport looks great and rugged! However, it seems like the transmission isn't as smooth as some of the other competition.

When I was deciding between the 4Runner and Passport, I was looking for a dependable vehicle that was off-road capable yet fuel efficient. Although neither vehicle is particularly fuel efficient, the Passport is rated better. Additionally, I wanted a vehicle that would be comfortable for long road trips, and the Passport checked all the boxes. In the short time that I have had it, I have been getting 27 miles per gallon on highway trips, and the heated and ventilated seats are a really nice touch. In cold climates, the rear heated seats and HVAC controls are appreciated. Another great feature is the Honda torque vectoring AWD, which ensures that at least 20% of the power is always going to the rear wheels. I highly recommend this vehicle to anyone in need of a comfortable road cruiser with off-road capability.

I noticed that the leg room in the driver's seat was a bit tight for me. As someone who is 6'1, I would love to be able to stretch my legs a bit more, especially during longer drives.

I wanted to upgrade to a 4WD from my 2016 Pilot. Luckily, the Passport delivered the same feel as my Pilot and more! It drove even smoother than the Pilot and the pick up was much better than my Pilot (which I already loved).

This midsized SUV is not only spacious, but also easy to handle, just like other SUVs in its class.

Low mileage, Honda certified, huge interior, looks great, powerful engine, one of Honda's best. Love it!
