Honda Passport problems

The Honda Passport is a line of sport utility vehicles (SUV) from the Japanese automaker Honda. Originally, it was a badge engineered version of the Isuzu Rodeo, a mid-size SUV sold between 1993 and 2002. It was introduced in 1993 for the 1994 model year as Honda's first entry into the growing SUV market of the 1990s in the United States. The first and second generation Passport was manufactured by Subaru Isuzu Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana. Like various other Honda models, it re-used a name from their motorcycle division, the Honda C75 Passport. The other two name candidates were Elsinore and Odyssey, the latter would be re-used a year later on a minivan.
The Passport was a part of a partnership between Isuzu and Honda in the 1990s, which saw an exchange of passenger vehicles from Honda to Isuzu, such as the Isuzu Oasis, and trucks from Isuzu to Honda, such as the Passport and Acura SLX. This arrangement was convenient for both companies, as Isuzu discontinued passenger car production in 1993 after a corporate restructuring, and Honda was in desperate need of an SUV, a segment that was growing in popularity in North America as well as Japan during the 1990s. The partnership ended in 2002 with the discontinuation of the Passport in favor of the Honda-engineered Pilot.
In November 2018, Honda announced that the Passport nameplate would return as a two-row mid-size crossover SUV slotted between the CR-V and Pilot. The third-generation Passport was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 27, 2018. It is built at Honda's factory in Lincoln, Alabama, and available for the 2019 model year.

Common Honda Passport problems
The Honda Passport has been known for its reliability and performance, but like any vehicle, it is not immune to common problems. Some of the most commonly reported issues include transmission problems, paint quality and rust formation, windshield wiper issues, and powertrain, structure, suspension, and engine issues.
Transmission problems are one of the most common issues reported by Honda Passport owners. These problems can include transmission slipping, rough shifting, or difficulty in shifting gears, which can lead to decreased performance, reduced fuel efficiency, and potential safety concerns.
Paint quality and rust formation are another common issue reported by Honda Passport owners. Paint chips, peeling, or bubbling can occur, particularly on the hood, roof, and doors, which can be caused by a variety of factors, including manufacturing defects, exposure to harsh environmental conditions, or inadequate paint preparation.
Windshield wiper problems are also reported by some Honda Passport owners. These issues can include streaking, skipping, or complete failure, which can be caused by worn wiper blades, bent wiper arms, or malfunctioning wiper motors.
Powertrain, structure, suspension, and engine issues are some of the most common Honda Passport problems reported by real owners.
In summary, while the Honda Passport is known for its reliability and performance, it is not exempt from common problems. Transmission issues, paint quality and rust formation, windshield wiper problems, and powertrain, structure, suspension, and engine issues are some of the most commonly reported issues by Honda Passport owners. Regular maintenance, following recommended service intervals, and addressing any issues promptly can help mitigate potential problems and ensure the longevity of your Honda Passport.

Is the Honda Passport noisy?
Honda has achieved exceptional levels of quietness with the Passport. All trims come with thick door glass, acoustic windshields, noise-absorbing carpeting and extensive body sealing. In the Black Edition trim, the front-door glass is acoustic.

- Date Complaint: 2024-10-27
- VIN: 5FNYF8H90KB

Honda Passport 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-24
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
- VIN: 5FNYF7H51KB
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The automatic emergency braking system engages in times when it is not appropriate to do so. The vehicle will flash the “brake” warning light on the dashboard, will shake the steering wheel, apply light braking, and in a few instances has applied hard braking. We have been unable to determine a specific trigger for this issue. The vehicle will engage this feature on strait roads with no other vehicles or obstructions on the road. It has happened during both rainy and sunny conditions. The vehicle has also exhibited this behavior when going up and down hills both with and without other vehicles present. The vehicle will do this sometimes when other vehicles enter our lane at a safe distance and at low speeds, at or below 30 mph. The vehicle has also done this at highway speeds of 55+ mph both with and without other vehicles or obstructions in the roadway. We have experienced this while driving curvy roads both with vehicles passing in the opposite lane of traffic and when no other vehicles are present. The feature appears to randomly engage at all speeds between 15+ mph to 70+ mph with or without vehicles on the roadway. It also doesn’t appear to matter if a vehicle is in our lane, an adjacent lane, or the opposite lane of traffic. This issue was identified and has been ongoing since the vehicle was purchased in October 2023. The issue happens at least 1 time most days the vehicle is driven but can range between 1 time and 3+ times each day. The vehicle is driven consistently 30+ miles each day with occasional trips of 300-500 miles in a single day. The other issue we have noticed is the rear cross traffic warning. We have noticed something’s this will engage when no other traffic or obstacles are present. We have also observed this feature failing to engage when a vehicle or obstacle is present. This issue does not happen often but has been observed enough that is has come to my attention as a potential issue.

- Summary: BOTH SUN VISORS, DRIVER AND PASSENGER ARE EXTREMELY HARD TO DEPLOY, WITH SIGNIFICANT RESISTANCE ACCOMPANIED BY LOUD CREAKING NOISE. THEY ARE A DEFINITE HAZARD TO WHEN MOVING. I HAVE REPORTED THIS TO MY DEALER, AND HONDA AMERICA, AS WELL. AS THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY, MY ONLY OPTION IS TO HAVE THEM REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE. HAVING OWNED MULTIPLE HONDAS (AT LEAST 7) OF DIFFERENT MODELS, ALL ACCRUING MILEAGE BEYOND WARRANTY LIMITITATIONS, AND NEVER EXPERIENCING THE PROBLEM, I FIND THE SITUATION MOST FRUSTRATING AND PERPLEXING. HONDA AMERICA DISMISSES ANY RESPONSIBILITY ON THEIR PART AS 'NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR'. THE MOST SIMPLE OF MECHANICAL FEATURES IN THE UNT COULD LEAD TO TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS. I DOCUMENTED THE ISSUE AS AN INCIDENT OF 10/21/24, BUT IN FACT THE ISSUE OCCURS WHENEVER ONE DRIVES THE VEHICLE, AND HAS BEEN DOING SO A LONG TIME. I FELT CERTAIN HONDA WOULD ADDRESS WITH A SAFETY RECALL.

- Date Complaint: 2024-10-10
- VIN: 5FNYF8H66NB
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The idle stop system comes on when I must apply my brakes and stop - for example at a red light. This week, more than once, after when the idle stop system came on, the care stalled. Both times, I was in traffic and this created a dangerous situation for me. When I took my foot off the brake and touched the gas to proceed when the light turned green, the car stalled. I had to put the car in park and restart the engine. When this happened, the cars behind me assumed I was going to move forward, and they had to hit their brakes to avoid hitting me. A warning light came on behind my steering wheel and said the idle stop was interrupted. The message said I needed to put the car in Park and restart the car. I am sure the traffic behind me at rush hour was not happy. Thank goodness this did not happen while I was starting to make a left turn, I could have been hit if the car stalled in the intersection.

- Summary: Backup camera is suddenly distorted with green and pink colors covering the actual image. The image changes each time, but is often very hard or impossible to safely view what is behind vehicle while backing up. Vehicle is garage kept, no sun or water damage possible. This significantly increases the risk of a crash while backing up. Because the image is so distorted, it often looks like there is an object present, causing driver to swerve even though there is not really anything there. Many other 2019 Passport owners are reporting the same thing in online forums. Honda insists this is a malfunctioning camera, but will not accept it as a manufacturing defect.
Honda Passport 2023

- Date Complaint: 2024-09-19
- VIN: 5FNYF8H68PB
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: My Auto-Electronic braking was randomly engaging while I was driving. It was unnecessary, & scary. It would just engage, then stop. Then, My Emissions Systems Light came on, & would NOT go off. I had to get to a safe place. The dealership told me to bring it to them, it NEVER WENT OFF THE WARNING WAS ON CONSISTENTLY. It Never Blinked or went off @ all. I was on the highway, & they kept it overnight. They told me they cleared it & THE EMISSIONS CODE NEVER CAME ON. YES, It DID. They still have it tonight bc I refused to take it back, when I was CLEARLY BEING TOLD I DID NOT SEE WHAT I SAW (EVEN PARKED) WHERE WOULD I GET THAT FROM IF THE LIGHT DIDN’T GO COME ON? They refused to acknowledge what happened, & as of right now I’m in a rental even though they wanted their rental back. It’s a 2023, bought brand new. Full Warranty, & They are putting People @ RISK. I DROVE AS SLOW AS I COULD, & FOLLOWED THE DIRECTIONS FROM THE OWNERS MANUAL. I Could have been re-ended, due to erratic braking, & my entire vehicle could be destroyed if HONDA REFUSES TO OWN UP TO THE MALFUNCTION. I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS W/THIS SUV SINCE THE 1st Week I bought it. I believe it should be taken back UNDER THE LEMON LAW! IT’S NOT SAFE! NOT even 7,000 miles on it yet. I bought it w/7 miles. IT started by saying I was departing my lane when I wasn’t for about a week, then the brakes would just slam on randomly. THEY SAID THEY RESET IT, they REFUSED TO CHANGE THE OIL @ 70%, had a new guy, who stated the EMISSIONS LIGHT DID NOT COME ON! It Did! I drove as slow as possible on the highway to get it to service bc I had NO CHOICE. They said the the camera was dirty, then the braking was fine, via the code went off, BUT DID NOT DRIVE IT. THEY LITERALLY CALLED ME A LIAR THAT THE EMISSIONS LIGHT DIDN’T COME ON. It was on when I drove it in, & left it. They DID NOT INSPECT EMISSIONS. Emissions has nothing to do with THEIR EXPLANATIONS. I don’t have an invoice yet, I refused taking it back. THEY HAVEN’T EVEN DRIVEN IT

I love this car! It has been awesome ever since I bought it in 2005. Although we had to clean the EGR valve, which is a common problem, we were able to just blow out the passage and avoid replacing the whole valve. Aside from a few other minor issues (it was a used car), this has been one of the most reliable vehicles I have ever owned. It's very sad to get rid of it, but it's time to move on to a Mini Van.

Vehicle year: 1997
I've owned my Honda Passport for 7 years and have not experienced a single issue. We absolutely adore the Honda brand for its reliability and high resale value, and we wouldn't consider purchasing anything else. While I appreciate the sleek and sporty design of the newer models, I still prefer the look of our older model. It comfortably fits 5 people and has plenty of room. Despite having 2 dogs and 1 child, the interior has held up remarkably well, with the upholstery, carpeting, and moldings still looking great. There are no rattles or drafts, and the SUV has remained in excellent condition.

I really like this car! The heated leather seats are amazing during the winter! I love everything about this car, how easy it is to maneuver, and how it has everything I wanted.

This mid-sized SUV is a great choice for those who want the feel of a 4WD pickup but don't want to give up the convenience of a family car. It offers more cargo space than the Mercedes or BMW and is built on a truck frame by a reputable truck manufacturer (Isuzu). While it may not provide a feather soft ride, it is a REAL truck that can handle tough terrain. If you're looking for a friendly and reliable mid-sized SUV, this is definitely worth considering!

Vehicle year: 2023
After reading some other reviews, we decided to wait for the 2024 model with the “tweaks” which apparently, primarily focus on a new front seat center console, arm rests and more aggressive tires. However, we found that the arm rests in the 2023 model work great for both my wife and me, and we appreciate the sliding console which allows us to lay some items on top while driving. Our “off road” driving is primarily on rural roads and on the city streets of Anchorage, Alaska which can be full of deep snow, ice, potholes and rough surfaces for a good portion of the year. We took advantage of the Honda financing low interest rate incentive for the 2023 model, and we are very happy with our new Passport TrailSport. It checks all the boxes for what we were looking for: roomy, nice proven V6 performance, fair gas mileage, 18 inch rims, more rubber for those rough road conditions and potholes, has all the latest safety and technology we were interested in, handles very well, and has great visibility. We replaced our 2017 Ford Escape Titanium with the 2023 Passport, and our Honda dealership in Anchorage was a pleasure to work with. There’s a lot of competition in this class, and we considered several alternatives; however, the Honda Passport is the best fit for us, and we truly love it.

This is a lemon. However, if you're considering this vehicle, I would suggest looking elsewhere. It's important to note that it is not a Honda, but rather an Isuzu with a Honda badge. Therefore, it may not live up to Honda's reputation. In my opinion, it should be judged as an Isuzu Rodeo.

I purchased a brand new 2020 vehicle in February 2021, which has now accumulated 9000 miles, of which less than 6000 are mine. Unfortunately, the AC has already failed, and despite replacing the Freon and adding blue dye, it seems that I will have to deal with it again in the future. Additionally, I experienced a very dangerous situation while driving on the interstate last week. The vehicle suddenly braked hard for no apparent reason while there were no other cars or obstacles on the road. Although it startled me, I managed to avoid any accidents. I took the vehicle to the dealership, but they were unable to identify the issue and seemed to dismiss it as a minor sensitivity problem. I believe that this is a serious issue that needs to be addressed before someone gets hurt.

I purchased the 1999 Honda Passport with high expectations due to Honda's reputation for producing quality vehicles. However, my experience with this car has been disappointing. I have had to replace the transmission multiple times, and both major and minor components seem to be breaking down frequently. As a result, I am now considering purchasing a Toyota instead.

I strongly advise against purchasing this vehicle due to the mechanical malfunctions that may arise from running ethanol in the gas. Although I personally like the vehicle, the issues caused by the ethanol make it difficult to recommend. It is important to note that the owner's manual explicitly warns against running methanol or ethanol in the vehicle. Overall, I suggest considering other options to avoid potential problems.

The Honda SUV may have been a disappointment for some, but it is important to note that it is a collaboration with Isuzu. While there have been some reported issues with the vehicle, it is still a well-designed SUV that has been enjoyed by many. It is important to consider the context and audience when discussing the vehicle's performance and to avoid making sweeping generalizations.
