Honda Passport problems

The Honda Passport is a line of sport utility vehicles (SUV) from the Japanese automaker Honda. Originally, it was a badge engineered version of the Isuzu Rodeo, a mid-size SUV sold between 1993 and 2002. It was introduced in 1993 for the 1994 model year as Honda's first entry into the growing SUV market of the 1990s in the United States. The first and second generation Passport was manufactured by Subaru Isuzu Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana. Like various other Honda models, it re-used a name from their motorcycle division, the Honda C75 Passport. The other two name candidates were Elsinore and Odyssey, the latter would be re-used a year later on a minivan.

The Passport was a part of a partnership between Isuzu and Honda in the 1990s, which saw an exchange of passenger vehicles from Honda to Isuzu, such as the Isuzu Oasis, and trucks from Isuzu to Honda, such as the Passport and Acura SLX. This arrangement was convenient for both companies, as Isuzu discontinued passenger car production in 1993 after a corporate restructuring, and Honda was in desperate need of an SUV, a segment that was growing in popularity in North America as well as Japan during the 1990s. The partnership ended in 2002 with the discontinuation of the Passport in favor of the Honda-engineered Pilot.

In November 2018, Honda announced that the Passport nameplate would return as a two-row mid-size crossover SUV slotted between the CR-V and Pilot. The third-generation Passport was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 27, 2018. It is built at Honda's factory in Lincoln, Alabama, and available for the 2019 model year.

Common Honda Passport problems

The Honda Passport has been known for its reliability and performance, but like any vehicle, it is not immune to common problems. Some of the most commonly reported issues include transmission problems, paint quality and rust formation, windshield wiper issues, and powertrain, structure, suspension, and engine issues.

Transmission problems are one of the most common issues reported by Honda Passport owners. These problems can include transmission slipping, rough shifting, or difficulty in shifting gears, which can lead to decreased performance, reduced fuel efficiency, and potential safety concerns.

Paint quality and rust formation are another common issue reported by Honda Passport owners. Paint chips, peeling, or bubbling can occur, particularly on the hood, roof, and doors, which can be caused by a variety of factors, including manufacturing defects, exposure to harsh environmental conditions, or inadequate paint preparation.

Windshield wiper problems are also reported by some Honda Passport owners. These issues can include streaking, skipping, or complete failure, which can be caused by worn wiper blades, bent wiper arms, or malfunctioning wiper motors.

Powertrain, structure, suspension, and engine issues are some of the most common Honda Passport problems reported by real owners.

In summary, while the Honda Passport is known for its reliability and performance, it is not exempt from common problems. Transmission issues, paint quality and rust formation, windshield wiper problems, and powertrain, structure, suspension, and engine issues are some of the most commonly reported issues by Honda Passport owners. Regular maintenance, following recommended service intervals, and addressing any issues promptly can help mitigate potential problems and ensure the longevity of your Honda Passport.

Honda Passport 2019
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-27
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-27
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H90KB
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: The Engine transmission surges as it changes gears probably due to the fuel pump recall issue. This surging and/or delay motion is worsening. The recall notice has been in place for over 2 years and local Honda dealership is still unable to acquire the replacement parts.
Honda Passport 2019
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-24
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
  • VIN: 5FNYF7H51KB
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The automatic emergency braking system engages in times when it is not appropriate to do so. The vehicle will flash the “brake” warning light on the dashboard, will shake the steering wheel, apply light braking, and in a few instances has applied hard braking. We have been unable to determine a specific trigger for this issue. The vehicle will engage this feature on strait roads with no other vehicles or obstructions on the road. It has happened during both rainy and sunny conditions. The vehicle has also exhibited this behavior when going up and down hills both with and without other vehicles present. The vehicle will do this sometimes when other vehicles enter our lane at a safe distance and at low speeds, at or below 30 mph. The vehicle has also done this at highway speeds of 55+ mph both with and without other vehicles or obstructions in the roadway. We have experienced this while driving curvy roads both with vehicles passing in the opposite lane of traffic and when no other vehicles are present. The feature appears to randomly engage at all speeds between 15+ mph to 70+ mph with or without vehicles on the roadway. It also doesn’t appear to matter if a vehicle is in our lane, an adjacent lane, or the opposite lane of traffic. This issue was identified and has been ongoing since the vehicle was purchased in October 2023. The issue happens at least 1 time most days the vehicle is driven but can range between 1 time and 3+ times each day. The vehicle is driven consistently 30+ miles each day with occasional trips of 300-500 miles in a single day. The other issue we have noticed is the rear cross traffic warning. We have noticed something’s this will engage when no other traffic or obstacles are present. We have also observed this feature failing to engage when a vehicle or obstacle is present. This issue does not happen often but has been observed enough that is has come to my attention as a potential issue.

  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The automatic emergency brake system will randomly activate despite there being nothing in the way, no car in front, and no obstruction. It causes the car to slam on the brakes for no reason which I’m afraid will cause someone to hit me from behind.

  • VIN: 5FNYF8H51KB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: BOTH SUN VISORS, DRIVER AND PASSENGER ARE EXTREMELY HARD TO DEPLOY, WITH SIGNIFICANT RESISTANCE ACCOMPANIED BY LOUD CREAKING NOISE. THEY ARE A DEFINITE HAZARD TO WHEN MOVING. I HAVE REPORTED THIS TO MY DEALER, AND HONDA AMERICA, AS WELL. AS THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY, MY ONLY OPTION IS TO HAVE THEM REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE. HAVING OWNED MULTIPLE HONDAS (AT LEAST 7) OF DIFFERENT MODELS, ALL ACCRUING MILEAGE BEYOND WARRANTY LIMITITATIONS, AND NEVER EXPERIENCING THE PROBLEM, I FIND THE SITUATION MOST FRUSTRATING AND PERPLEXING. HONDA AMERICA DISMISSES ANY RESPONSIBILITY ON THEIR PART AS 'NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR'. THE MOST SIMPLE OF MECHANICAL FEATURES IN THE UNT COULD LEAD TO TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS. I DOCUMENTED THE ISSUE AS AN INCIDENT OF 10/21/24, BUT IN FACT THE ISSUE OCCURS WHENEVER ONE DRIVES THE VEHICLE, AND HAS BEEN DOING SO A LONG TIME. I FELT CERTAIN HONDA WOULD ADDRESS WITH A SAFETY RECALL.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-10
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H66NB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The idle stop system comes on when I must apply my brakes and stop - for example at a red light. This week, more than once, after when the idle stop system came on, the care stalled. Both times, I was in traffic and this created a dangerous situation for me. When I took my foot off the brake and touched the gas to proceed when the light turned green, the car stalled. I had to put the car in park and restart the engine. When this happened, the cars behind me assumed I was going to move forward, and they had to hit their brakes to avoid hitting me. A warning light came on behind my steering wheel and said the idle stop was interrupted. The message said I needed to put the car in Park and restart the car. I am sure the traffic behind me at rush hour was not happy. Thank goodness this did not happen while I was starting to make a left turn, I could have been hit if the car stalled in the intersection.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-28
  • VIN: 5FNYF7H54KB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Backup camera is suddenly distorted with green and pink colors covering the actual image. The image changes each time, but is often very hard or impossible to safely view what is behind vehicle while backing up. Vehicle is garage kept, no sun or water damage possible. This significantly increases the risk of a crash while backing up. Because the image is so distorted, it often looks like there is an object present, causing driver to swerve even though there is not really anything there. Many other 2019 Passport owners are reporting the same thing in online forums. Honda insists this is a malfunctioning camera, but will not accept it as a manufacturing defect.
Honda Passport 2023

  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-19
  • VIN: 5FNYF8H68PB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My Auto-Electronic braking was randomly engaging while I was driving. It was unnecessary, & scary. It would just engage, then stop. Then, My Emissions Systems Light came on, & would NOT go off. I had to get to a safe place. The dealership told me to bring it to them, it NEVER WENT OFF THE WARNING WAS ON CONSISTENTLY. It Never Blinked or went off @ all. I was on the highway, & they kept it overnight. They told me they cleared it & THE EMISSIONS CODE NEVER CAME ON. YES, It DID. They still have it tonight bc I refused to take it back, when I was CLEARLY BEING TOLD I DID NOT SEE WHAT I SAW (EVEN PARKED) WHERE WOULD I GET THAT FROM IF THE LIGHT DIDN’T GO COME ON? They refused to acknowledge what happened, & as of right now I’m in a rental even though they wanted their rental back. It’s a 2023, bought brand new. Full Warranty, & They are putting People @ RISK. I DROVE AS SLOW AS I COULD, & FOLLOWED THE DIRECTIONS FROM THE OWNERS MANUAL. I Could have been re-ended, due to erratic braking, & my entire vehicle could be destroyed if HONDA REFUSES TO OWN UP TO THE MALFUNCTION. I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS W/THIS SUV SINCE THE 1st Week I bought it. I believe it should be taken back UNDER THE LEMON LAW! IT’S NOT SAFE! NOT even 7,000 miles on it yet. I bought it w/7 miles. IT started by saying I was departing my lane when I wasn’t for about a week, then the brakes would just slam on randomly. THEY SAID THEY RESET IT, they REFUSED TO CHANGE THE OIL @ 70%, had a new guy, who stated the EMISSIONS LIGHT DID NOT COME ON! It Did! I drove as slow as possible on the highway to get it to service bc I had NO CHOICE. They said the the camera was dirty, then the braking was fine, via the code went off, BUT DID NOT DRIVE IT. THEY LITERALLY CALLED ME A LIAR THAT THE EMISSIONS LIGHT DIDN’T COME ON. It was on when I drove it in, & left it. They DID NOT INSPECT EMISSIONS. Emissions has nothing to do with THEIR EXPLANATIONS. I don’t have an invoice yet, I refused taking it back. THEY HAVEN’T EVEN DRIVEN IT

Latest negative Honda Passport car reviews

  1. Johathan Corwin 2025-04-19

    Vehicle year: 1997

I recently purchased a used passport with 120,000 miles on it. It ran great at first, but then it started experiencing issues with the solenoids and control devices that activate the 4WD. After repairing those, it began to have problems with just about every emission control sensor and device under the hood. I've replaced the A/I/C, M/A/P, T/P/S, and M/A/F, but I'm still having issues with the check engine light and driveability. Despite these challenges, I still find joy in driving it. However, since it's an Isuzu, finding the right parts can be a bit of a challenge and the prices can vary from expensive to outrageous. Overall, it's a bit of a love-hate relationship.

I purchased an SUV from a dealer in 08/07 with a warranty. Unfortunately, the engine died in 01/08 with only 74,000 miles. Upon further investigation, I discovered that this particular SUV model is no longer in production due to its engine's tendency to consume oil, produce loud noises, and have poor gas mileage.

I am confident in my assessment that the car I purchased is not up to par. Despite my initial positive impression, the transmission has already begun to malfunction after only four months of use. Additionally, the closed system makes it impossible to check the fluid level, which is a significant drawback. Overall, I am disappointed with my purchase.

I strongly dislike the Honda Passport. Despite spending a significant amount of time at the Honda dealership getting it fixed, the problem still persists. As a result, I have lost faith in the brand and will not be purchasing a Honda again.

Your Passport has been a great companion for over 4 years now. I purchased it with 86K on it and it has only required typical repairs for its age. Fortunately, I haven't experienced any major engine or transmission problems yet, even at over 120K. Compared to other SUVs of its age and class level, I would say it is average to good. However, there are a few things to keep an eye on, such as alternators (which can start 'chirping' or 'squealing'), power steering pumps (which can start to hum loudly), and CV joints (which can be expensive to fix if they wear out from maintenance neglect). Overall, I would describe this vehicle as rugged, reliable, and durable. Although the mileage to power ratio is not great, it is still a great vehicle to own.

The 2021 Passport Elite is an excellent SUV that ticks all the boxes. It offers plenty of passenger space, making long trips comfortable and enjoyable. With its powerful V-6 engine, you can expect good acceleration and a smooth ride. I have been driving my Passport Elite for over a year now, and I have not encountered any issues. The gas mileage is impressive, with around 23 MPG on the highway and 15 MPG in the city. The SUV also has plenty of room for five passengers and a spacious cargo area behind the second row. Overall, I highly recommend the Passport Elite for anyone looking for a reliable and fuel-efficient SUV that is fun to drive and performs well in all weather conditions.

As a long-time Subaru owner, I recently looked at the Ascent but decided against it due to the turbo engine. Instead, I chose the Honda Passport and I'm really happy with my decision. The Honda is impressively quiet and has great engine response, especially around turns where it doesn't plow as much. While I do prefer the interior layout of the Subaru, there are some features of the Honda that I really appreciate, such as the gas door opener and the lane clearance light on the side view mirror. However, there are a couple of things that are taking some getting used to, such as the push button transmission and the gas/brake pedal location. Additionally, the car's sensing of oncoming traffic can be a bit over-sensitive and cause unnecessary braking. Overall, I'm enjoying my new Honda Passport and would recommend it to others.

My employer has a large fleet of vehicles for business travel, including a variety of cars, trucks, and SUVs. My personal favorite is the Passport, which is perfect for winter driving over snowy mountain passes. It has outstanding AWD and traction systems, making it very stable and predictable with a car-like ride. Additionally, it is very comfortable for my family's personal trips and has more space and comfort than my Subaru, making it perfect for family ski trips. The Honda Passport has the best ergo design for drivers and lots of smart options without being gimmicky. It even has a manual knob on the sound system, which is a nice touch! The fuel mileage is also good on eco mode. While it is hard to find negatives, I do have a few suggestions for improvement. The transmission can be a bit uncertain about gear selection, especially up and down hills. Additionally, the transmission selection buttons sit low in the dark console, which forces the driver to take their eyes off the road for too long while searching for the right button. The ventilation controls are also small and dark, requiring extra attention to adjust. However, these are minor issues that I only notice because so much else is excellent about the Passport.

Size is perfect for a 5-seat SUV. It handles beautifully and I love the elite features. I'm still learning how to operate them all, but overall I'm very happy.

Hi there! I noticed that you've owned two Pilots and most recently the CRV. I'm glad to hear that the Passport has delivered on all three of your needs - a higher seating position, more ground clearance, and more back storage. It's great that the safety features come standard, even though they could use a little more refinement. I understand that the engine shut off feature can be a bit of a hassle, but it's good to know that there's a button on the center console to disable it. Overall, it sounds like the Passport is a great SUV that fits nicely between the Pilot and the CRV. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us!
