2001 Honda Passport problems
The Honda Passport is a line of sport utility vehicles (SUV) from the Japanese automaker Honda. Originally, it was a badge engineered version of the Isuzu Rodeo, a mid-size SUV sold between 1993 and 2002. It was introduced in 1993 for the 1994 model year as Honda's first entry into the growing SUV market of the 1990s in the United States. The first and second generation Passport was manufactured by Subaru Isuzu Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana. Like various other Honda models, it re-used a name from their motorcycle division, the Honda C75 Passport. The other two name candidates were Elsinore and Odyssey, the latter would be re-used a year later on a minivan.
The Passport was a part of a partnership between Isuzu and Honda in the 1990s, which saw an exchange of passenger vehicles from Honda to Isuzu, such as the Isuzu Oasis, and trucks from Isuzu to Honda, such as the Passport and Acura SLX. This arrangement was convenient for both companies, as Isuzu discontinued passenger car production in 1993 after a corporate restructuring, and Honda was in desperate need of an SUV, a segment that was growing in popularity in North America as well as Japan during the 1990s. The partnership ended in 2002 with the discontinuation of the Passport in favor of the Honda-engineered Pilot.
In November 2018, Honda announced that the Passport nameplate would return as a two-row mid-size crossover SUV slotted between the CR-V and Pilot. The third-generation Passport was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 27, 2018. It is built at Honda's factory in Lincoln, Alabama, and available for the 2019 model year.

Common 2001 Honda Passport problems
The Honda Passport 2001 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners:
- Transmission Issues: Owners have reported problems with the automatic transmission on the 2001 Passport, particularly around the 100,000-mile mark. The transmission may struggle to shift into the correct gears, leading to power transfer issues to the wheels. This often necessitates a transmission rebuild or replacement to resolve the issue.
- No-Start Problems: The 2001 Honda Passport equipped with the 3.2L V6 engine has been known to experience no-start issues. When this occurs, the engine fails to turn over, although the accessories still function. Addressing this problem may involve replacing the battery and starter, but it's not always a guaranteed fix.
- Engine Knocking: Another issue reported by owners is engine knocking in the 3.2L V6 engine of the 2001 Passport. This knocking typically results from oil leaks that can lead to engine damage if not promptly repaired. The leaks can occur at various points, including the head gasket, and if left unattended, they can cause the engine to seize up, necessitating replacement.
These problems highlight some of the key issues that owners of the 2001 Honda Passport have faced. It's essential for potential buyers to be aware of these common issues to make informed decisions when considering purchasing this vehicle.

Why is my 2001 Honda Passport not starting?

- Summary: MY HUSBAND AND I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE A FEW DAYS AGO. TODAY HE TOOK IT IN TO GET A TUNE UP AND OIL CHANGE. WHEN THE MECHANIC HAD THE CAR LIFTED HE RECOGNIZED A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF CRACKS/RUST FRAME. THE PLASTIC GAS TANK IS ABOUT TO FALL OUT OF THE METAL CASING THAT SURROUNDS IT, IT IS ALMOST COMPLETELY ATE AWAY. THERE IS ALSO A FRAME CRACK DUE TO RUST ON THE PASSENGER REAR FRAME BEHIND THE REAR TIRE. THE MECHANIC ADVISED THAT WE NOT CONTINUE TO DRIVE THIS CAR UNTIL THE ISSUE HAS BEEN RESOLVED DUE TO OUR SAFETY. WE FOUND SOME INFORMATION ON A RECALL PERTAINING TO THE SAME PROBLEMS THAT WERE OCCURRING ON OUR VEHICLE: HTTP://NEWS.HONDA.COM/NEWSANDVIEWS/ARTICLE.ASPX?ID=5798-EN WHEN WE SEARCHED OUR VIN NUMBER NO RECALLS SHOWED UP, EVEN THOUGH THE CAR WAS BOUGHT, SOLD, AND DRIVEN IN WHAT HONDA REFERS TO AS A "SALT BELT" STATE. NOT SURE WHY MY VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL AS IT IS HAVING THE SAME SAFETY ISSUES AS THE VEHICLES THAT WERE RECALLED ARE HAVING. PLEASE ADVISE WHY OUR VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL WHEN IT CLEARLY HAS THE SAME ISSUES AS THE VEHICLES THAT WERE. THANKS FOR YOU TIME.

VEHICLES THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED SUSTAINED EXPOSURE TO HIGHLY CORROSIVE MATERIALS USED IN SOME JURISDICTIONS FOR ROAD DEICING PURPOSES MAY EXPERIENCE EXCESSIVE CORROSION IN THE VICINITY OF THE FORWARD MOUNTING POINT BRACKET FOR THE LEFT OR RIGHT REAR SUSPENSION LOWER LINK PRIOR TO THE TIME THAT SUCH CORROSION WOULD NORMALLY BE EXPECTED.
- Consequence: EXCESSIVE CORROSION MAY RESULT IN THE LEFT OR RIGHT REAR SUSPENSION LOWER LINK BRACKET BECOMING DETACHED FROM THE FRAME, WHICH CAN AFFECT VEHICLE HANDLING AND POTENTIALLY CAUSE A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE REAR SUSPENSION LOWER LINK BRACKET AREA. FOR VEHICLES IN WHICH LITTLE OR NO CORROSION IS FOUND, THE AREA WILL BE TREATED WITH AN ANTI-CORROSIVE COMPOUND. FOR VEHICLES IN WHICH CORROSION HAS DAMAGED THE REAR SUSPENSION LOWER LINK BRACKET AND AFFECTED ITS CONNECTION TO THE VEHICLE FRAME, A REINFORCEMENT BRACKET WILL BE INSTALLED. IN THE RARE EVENT THE CORROSION IS SO SEVERE THAT THE REINFORCEMENT BRACKET REMEDY WOULD NOT BE APPROPRIATE, A REPURCHASE OFFER WILL BE EXTENDED TO THE VEHICLE'S OWNER. We live in a rural area and drive on roads that are not well-maintained. Despite this, our vehicle has been able to handle these roads for at least six days a week over the past three years without any shakes or rattles. We have never owned a car that has been able to do this, not even my husband's 4-wheel drive pickup. I am confident that this car will last us a long time after it's paid for, if we choose to keep it.
-
What a cute little SUV! It runs really well, and although it broke down once due to the fuel pump going out, it's still a Honda baby.
-
I've been a true Honda lover since '96. I got a great deal on the Passport when I leased it 3 years ago and truly haven't had any problems with it. The Isuzu engine runs great in my vehicle.
-
The Honda Passport is a fantastic looking SUV that also boasts good road manners and excellent engine power. My model is the EX 2 wheel drive with the CD changer, two-tone paint and leather. We really enjoy it and highly recommend it to prospective shoppers as a great value in the preowned market. We bought it used and have not had any problems with it.
-
I have owned my Passport for over three years and I absolutely love it! The ride is smooth, the interior space is great, and the CD/Stereo is fantastic. I have found the reliability and dependability of the Passport to be exceptional. I would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone who is considering the purchase of an SUV.

This car has made me frustrated on numerous occasions. On two different occasions, it randomly shut off while I was making a turn. I had to get the transmission fixed because it was leaking fluid. The SUV doesn't use oil properly. This thing has just left a bad taste in my mouth, but I'm so glad I just sold it. Hopefully, I'll get my reliable Toyota 4Runner for Christmas.
Stephan Mann 2024-10-25
From the very beginning, the vehicle has been performing poorly, breaking down repeatedly and proving to be entirely unreliable. It is concerning that the Honda dealership does not have the necessary parts in stock when something breaks, and they do not seem to take responsibility for non-Honda parts. Despite having owned four Honda products without any issues, I have spent thousands on repairs and upkeep for this one and will not be purchasing another Honda product in the future.
Larry Brekke 2024-10-10
The truck requires frequent repairs and is often in the dealership's shop. The shop manager has even joked with my wife that she should be on the dealership payroll due to the amount of time the truck spends in their care.

Hi there! I noticed that you mentioned your experience with a Rodeo, which is not a Honda model. While the exterior of the vehicle is attractive, you mentioned some concerns with the interior, ride, and gas mileage. On the plus side, you have not had any mechanical problems in three years and 20k miles, which is great! I understand that you are selling it and upgrading to a Pilot, which is a true Honda. Thank you for sharing your experience!
Omari Weber 2024-08-08
This is an Isuzu, not a true Honda. Although it is an above-average, solid SUV, the quality is not quite up to the usual Honda standards. The ride is very truck-like and rough, cornering is unstable, and fuel economy is just okay (I've averaged 18 mpg). All things considered, it has been an alright vehicle. I'm looking to trade it in for a CR-V, which is what I should have gotten in the first place.
