2011 Mini Cooper clubman problems

mini logo

The Mini Clubman is a subcompact executive car engineered and manufactured by German automaker BMW and sold under the Mini marque. The first-generation Clubman was introduced in 2007, as a variant of the Mini Hatch (Hardtop in the US). A commercial version called Clubvan was added to the range in 2012. The current second-generation model has been in production since 2015 and available with front- and all-wheel drive.

History

The use of the name "Clubman" is a departure from Mini tradition. "Clubman" was originally the name given to the 1970s facelift of the classic Mini, which mostly resulted in a squared-off front end, whereas the classic Mini estates had traditionally been named "Traveller" or "Countryman". However, BMW did not initially purchase the rights to use those names, and so decided to call its larger-variant "Clubman", a name which it did own rights to.

Sketches of a new estate version of the Mini were shown at the 2000 Paris Motor Show, and a rendering of the estate concept (internally named EXT), wore the Clubman name on the licence plate. The Clubman started out in development based on the first generation Mini Hatch (R50) before changing to the second gen Hatch (R56).

Common 2011 Mini Cooper clubman problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2011 Mini Cooper Clubman, several common problems have been identified:

  • Timing Chain Rattle: Owners of Cooper S models with the turbocharged 1.6-liter petrol engine have reported a loud rattle upon cold start-up. This rattle is caused by a weak timing chain tensioner that fails to maintain tension over time, necessitating either a tensioner replacement or a full chain and chain guides replacement.
  • Clutch Wear: Some owners have experienced rapid wear of the clutch in the Clubman. It is advised to check for slipping when accelerating in high gears and to test pulling away in a high gear from a standstill to assess the clutch's condition.
  • Start-Stop Malfunction: The stop-start system in the Mini Clubman has been known to malfunction, causing the car to stall at junctions. Dealers may struggle to diagnose this fault, and in some cases, the system stops working entirely, displaying an error message on the dashboard that requires dealer intervention.
  • Dashboard Rattles: Interior and dashboard rattles and creaks have been reported by owners. Some have resorted to replacing dashboards to address this issue. Additionally, the speakers in the car can rattle, distort, or fail completely, necessitating replacements.
  • Cracked Windscreens: The upright position of the Clubman's windscreen makes it prone to chips and cracks. Large chips can develop into cracks that may require windshield replacement, potentially leading to an MOT test failure if located in the driver's line of sight.
  • Air Conditioning Problems: Numerous reports have highlighted issues with the air conditioning system in the Mini Clubman. It is recommended to test the system by switching from maximum heat to cold to ensure rapid temperature changes, indicating proper functionality.

These common problems with the 2011 Mini Cooper Clubman can impact the car's performance, safety, and overall ownership experience. Owners should be vigilant in addressing these issues promptly to maintain the vehicle's reliability and longevity.

What is the problem with the Mini Clubman?

The 1.5-litre petrol engine has been subject to a recall to deal with excessive crankshaft bearing wear; this problem is serious and could lead to considerable engine damage if not remedied. It's therefore worth checking with your local dealership whether the car you've got your eye on is affected.

Is the 2011 Mini a good car?

Fun to drive, very responsive.

Handles very well, is good on gas, pick up is zippy and very responsive and stylish. Based on this car, I would definitely buy another Mini. Rating breakdown (out of 5): Comfort 5.0.

What is the biggest issue with Mini Cooper?

The 1st generation (R50/R53) Mini Cooper is known for premature clutch wear and failure. This typically occurs between 40,000-60,000 miles on vehicles built from 2001-2006. The root cause is due to an under-designed single-mass flywheel and weak factory clutch that cannot handle the torque of the supercharged engines.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-18
  • VIN: WMWZF3C50BT
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I've just gotten a very common air bag seat mat sensor code (93c1) that Mini had a limited recall on - but alas my car did not get the code until it was outside the parameters of that repair program. What makes it worse is that the fix is over $1000 and there's very little concrete info on the actual danger (or not) of driving around with this code active. I've spend the better part of 2 days researching how to fix this & I'm still uncertain as to what to fully do.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-23
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: WMWZF3C57BT
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: At about 6:40AM on September 23, 2022, the 2011 Mini Clubman car caught on fire. The car was parked in the driveway, locked with everything off, key removed and unoccupied. It was last driven the evening of September 22nd. About 6:40AM the interior behind the steering wheel and dashboard erupted into flames. The car filled with smoke and flames. The fire burned for about 5 -10 minutes and self extinguished. Just prior to the fire the headlights were reported to be on. After the fire, the windshield wipers were operating with no way to turn them off. At a reasonable time after the flames were no longer visible (10-15min), the driver's door was opened by the emergency key to vent the smoke. Upon inspection, the area around the left footwell near the driver's door was heavily charred with insulation burned off all wiring and co-located electrical devices. The hood release latch was melted. The air vent to the left of the steering wheel was missing and all the ductwork to that vent was missing. There was a large deformation and hole in the dashboard above and slightly to the right of the steering wheel and the windshield was cracked about 2-3 inches above the dashboard. It appears that electrical components and wiring inside the dashboard were also engulphed in flames but no detailed inspection of the damage occurred. Significant smoke damage occurred to the entire interior. The local fire department was called and they were able to open the hood and disconnect the battery which stopped the windshield wipers. The car was a stock car with no modifications. Reasonably maintained by professionals. The odometer reading before the fire was approximately 103,000 miles. No problems were noted prior to the incident. Insurance has considered the car a total loss and unrepairable. In general it is assumed by the writer that Mini's or any other car should not experience electrical fires when unoccupied, all devices are off, no key is present. Kindly investigate.

Negative 2011 Mini Cooper clubman car reviews

  1. Kian Towne 2025-01-09

I had a fire engine red, 2010 Mini Cooper Clubman that I loved until it started having numerous mechanical issues such as timing chain, brakes, battery, and spark plugs causing the cylinders to miss fire. Additionally, I had to purchase new tires within two months of buying the car with only 25k on it, and had to fix the driver's side and sunroof's window seals. Unfortunately, I did not expect nor anticipate the cost to repair all of these issues, which amounted to around $4000. By the time it hit 42K, I had to fix all of these things. I am disappointed in Mini for charging exuberant amounts for parts and labor. It was not a reliable vehicle at all. :-(

  2. Adolf Trantow 2024-11-24

This car is a blast to drive around town! However, it can be a bit noisy on the highway. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with repairs. It seems like everything that could go wrong with this car has gone wrong. But the good news is that there are plenty of videos and instructions available online to help you fix these issues yourself. This is because many people have experienced similar problems and don't want to pay the high Mini Cooper repair costs. Overall, the combination of BMW engineering and British craftsmanship makes for a unique car that requires some extra care and attention.

  3. Ernie Crona 2024-07-03

I purchased a used 2010 Clubman with 65,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, after 3 months, the engine developed a vacuum leak. Upon inspection by my mechanic, I noticed plastic parts attached to the engine and a stripped screw on the exhaust manifold that had been glued back in place. I was informed that BMWs also have plastic parts. I also discovered a crack in the windshield that started on the top edge while washing the car. The dealer quoted me $800+ for a replacement, but I found a mobile windshield company that will replace it for $230. Despite these setbacks, I have decided to sell the car when it reaches 85,000 miles. While I may not purchase another German car, I am confident in my ability to make an informed decision based on my experiences.

  4. Derrick Hill 2024-05-29

I bought a 2010 Clubman with the expectation of modern engineering and reliability, while still maintaining the original Mini's design and styling. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with the car's timing chain, water pump, oil consumption (1Q every 3,000 miles), clutch (needed replacement after 50,000 miles), water/oil seals, tires (needed replacement after 20,000 miles), stereo (completely failed after 2 years), brakes, shock absorbers (needed replacement after 50,000 miles), spark plugs, and fuel injection system. Overall, this has been the least reliable car I have owned since my first car in 1975.

  5. Stevie Sporer 2024-02-13

I confidently drove my Clubman S, but unfortunately, it quickly became a financial burden due to various issues such as oil gaskets, plugs, and ultimately, a timing chain failure that resulted in engine damage. Regrettably, there was no warning from the check engine light to indicate the impending failure.

Positive 2011 Mini Cooper clubman car reviews

  1. Forest Batz 2024-11-14

I've had the car for a week now and have driven around 350 miles. On the first tank, I achieved 29.5 mpg in mixed city/highway driving, including a good bit of idling in traffic. The current tank is at 36 mpg for highway and some errands. The power is great, even though I'm still breaking it in, and the steering is immediate with good steering feel. Contrary to what the car magazines say, I find the steering feel to be excellent. The stereo (Harmon Kardon/Sirius XM) is fantastic, and the driving position is very comfortable (I'm 6'1

  2. Boyd Sanford 2024-11-05

I'm really enjoying my first Mini, especially the Clubman version which offers just the right amount of extra space for me. As an avid bowler, I can easily fit two two-ball bags in the back without lowering the seats. The extra space in the rear seating area is perfect for my grandkids and even an occasional adult. Although there are a few quirks, the interior is generally comfortable. However, I do find the placement of the power window controls right behind the cup holders a bit inconvenient. Overall, it's a great little car with good pep and super economy, averaging 28+ mpg in city driving.

  3. Madyson Will 2024-10-18

You'll love the upgraded interior and seats for extra comfort!

  4. Zakary Will 2024-10-01

Congratulations on your new 2011 Chili Red Clubman S with black roof! It sounds like you and your wife are absolutely thrilled with your purchase. The manual transmission must make for a really smooth ride. It's great to hear that the car is so much fun to drive and that it turns heads. Thank you for sharing your positive experience and recommendation!

  5. Saige Stanton 2024-09-24

Congratulations on your new Mini! It's great to hear that you're enjoying the car so far. The Mini is surprisingly fast and fuel-efficient, which is a great combination. The moonroof is a nice touch, although it would be even better if it provided more shade. The car handles corners really well, which is always a plus. It may take some time to get used to the large speedometer, but it's a minor issue. Overall, the Mini is a fantastic car, especially considering that it's essentially a 4-cylinder BMW 3 series. The only downside you mentioned was the HK audio having too much bass, but that's a minor issue. Although the car is tight inside, it's also cozy and snug, which adds to the overall charm of the Mini. Enjoy your new ride!
