- Leaky Radiator:
- The 2005 Xterra, and potentially the 2004 model, has been associated with radiator leaks that can persist even after tightening the cap. If not promptly addressed, this issue can escalate to transmission failure, necessitating costly repairs.
- Timing Chain Defects:
- Some Xterra owners have experienced timing chain defects, leading to noisy engines and potential damage. Loose timing chains can result in significant engine issues and costly repairs.
- EVAP System Clogs and Gas Spills:
- Another common problem reported is related to the EVAP system, causing gas splash back at the pump due to clogs. This issue can lead to fuel spillage and inconvenience for owners.
These problems highlight key issues faced by owners of the 2004 Nissan Xterra, ranging from transmission failures to fuel system malfunctions and timing chain defects. Addressing these issues promptly and proactively can help mitigate potential costly repairs and ensure the longevity of the vehicle.

2004 Nissan Xterra recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2004 Nissan Xterra.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: STEERING:COLUMN
- Summary: NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2002-2004 FRONTIER VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 9, 2001 THROUGH OCTOBER 20, 2004, AND MODEL YEAR 2002-2004, XTERRA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 9, 2001, THROUGH JANUARY 6, 2005. OVER TIME CORROSION MAY FORM IN THE LOWER STEERING COLUMN JOINT AND LIMIT MOVEMENT OF THE JOINT. THE LIMITED MOVEMENT OF THIS JOINT MAY CREATE EXCESSIVE LOAD ON THE LOWER STEERING COLUMN SHAFT. IF THE VEHICLE CONTINUES TO BE DRIVEN IN THIS CONDITION, IT MAY LEAD TO CRACKING OF THE SHAFT DURING LOW SPEED MANEUVERS THAT REQUIRE LARGE STEERING INPUTS.
- Consequence: THE SHAFT MAY BREAK WHICH COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL DURING THESE LOW SPEED MANEUVERS INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: THE STEERING COLUMN SHAFT AND JOINT WILL BE REPLACED WITH A SHAFT OF A DIFFERENT DESIGN. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 13, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.
- Manufacturer: HOPKINS MANUFACTURING CORP.
- Components: EQUIPMENT
- Summary: CERTAIN HOPKINS AFTERMARKET TRAILER BRAKE CONTROL CONNECTION HARNESSES SOLD FOR USE ON CERTAIN MODELS OF NISSAN VEHICLES WHICH ARE LISTED ABOVE. THE INTERNAL PART NUMBERS WITHIN HOPKINS ARE: 1010476025, 1040376025, 1110476025, 1170376025, 1290376025, 1010476035, 1040376035, 1110476035, 1170376035, AND 1290376035. A WIRE MAY HAVE BEEN PLACED IN AN INCORRECT POSITION IN THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR HOUSING. THIS RESULTS IN AN INCORRECT ROUTING OF WIRES BETWEEN THE TRAILER BRAKE CONTROLLER AND THE TOWING VEHICLE WIRING SYSTEM.
- Consequence: THIS HARNESS WOULD RESULT IN POWER FROM THE TRAILER BRAKE CONTROLLER GOING TO THE TOWING VEHICLE DASH LIGHT CIRCUIT RATHER THAN THE TRAILER BRAKES. THIS RESULT WOULD BE THE LACK OF TRAILER BRAKING WHEN THE TOWING VEHICLE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. IT WOULD ALSO RESULT IN THE TOWING VEHICLES DASH LIGHTS BEING ACTIVATED WHEN THE VEHICLE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. THE FAILURE OF THE APPLICATION OF THE TRAILER BRAKE COULD RESULT IN REDUCED ABILITY TO STOP AND CONTRIBUTE TO A POSSIBLE CRASH.
- Remedy: HOPKINS WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE ORIGINAL HARNESS WITH A REVISED HARNESS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN AUGUST 17, 2007. OWNERS CAN CONTACT HOPKINS AT 800-835-0129.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: TRAILER HITCHES
- Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE ACCESSORY TOW HITCH ATTACHMENT BOLTS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN TIGHTENED TO THE PROPER SPECIFICATION.
- Consequence: THIS COULD CAUSE THE TOW HITCH TO LOOSEN OR SEPARATE FROM THE VEHICLE WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL TIGHTEN THE TOW HITCH. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 3, 2005. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

I absolutely love this ride! It's not only fun, but also good-looking, and has a large cargo space with a really usable roof rack. The interior layout is very functional, making it a great ride for camping, getting to hiking trails, or any off-road activity. Plus, it cleans up easily inside after those off-road activities because of the material that covers the seats. The gas mileage is not bad for what it is, getting about 20mpg, but if one is worried about the money for gas, an SUV should not even be an option considered. When I use the cruise control and keep it on 55, it does even better!
-
This SUV combines the rugged style of a truck with the spaciousness of an SUV. While it may not be the most comfortable ride, it offers the durability and toughness of a truck.

Hi, I'm Treva Darlene Eley Billiot, and I was born and raised in Biloxi, Mississippi. As an American Indian, I am truly proud of my Xterra and love it so much that I'm incorporating it into my Arts & Crafts (which you can see on my Facebook page, Treva Darlene Eley Billiot) with designs and official decorations like buffalo and feathers that showcase my Native heritage. Every year, we participate in the 1699 Reenactment in Ocean Springs, and I'm excited to show off my Xterra's decorations. We recently replaced the tires and touched up a few things, but I'm still very proud to have my Xterra and hope to keep it for many more years to come. Thanks for reading! 👍💘😍
-
I absolutely love my Xterra! I chose it for its sleek design, durability, and Nissan's reputation for reliability. While I was disappointed that leather seats were not an option, and it can be a bit of a hassle to remove the back seat cushions to lower the back part flat, it has been an incredibly reliable vehicle that kept me safe and unharmed during a serious auto accident. I am seriously considering upgrading to the new model of Xterra in the next few years, once I have paid off this one. It is very competitively priced, and I would highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a mid-size SUV.

This car is great for getting from point A to point B, but it may not be the best option if you're looking for something more. You might be able to find a better deal on a nicer SUV. However, the car is actually not bad to drive, even though it may lack power and good gas mileage. The most I have gotten in mileage on the road is 18 with cruise control at 65-70. At today's gas prices, I would consider getting another SUV that's nicer, even though they may get the same mileage.

I purchased my X back in 2004 and initially everything went smoothly. However, with 167K miles on the clock, it has been quite a journey. At 120K miles, I had to spend $1500 to repair the entire clutch assembly. Then at 130K miles, the entire brake system failed, costing me another $1200. The shocks went bad at 135K miles, which set me back another $900. At around 138K miles, I had to spend $150 to replace the liner. To cut a long story short, I have had to replace the compressor ($900), water pump ($700), radio ($130), catalytic converter ($900 or so), and starter ($800). The only thing I haven't had to replace yet is the cup holder, which is a relief! Overall, it has been a bit of a bumpy ride, but I'm still going strong!

Perfect if you want an SUV that can go off-road without hurting its feelings and you want to feel like you are in something sporty. It drives like compact pickups (well, that is what it is built off of). There are plenty of places to tie down cargo inside and out. Don't get it if you plan to stay in the suburbs all your driving time. It's perfect if you are into the outdoors, like hiking, biking, camping, hunting, fishing, etc.

The dealership has been visited multiple times for minor issues such as cold air around the handles and window trim falling off. Unfortunately, the window motors are not durable enough and have caused some trouble. The fuel economy has been disappointing, averaging at 15.3 even with a lot of highway miles. Despite this, the engine lacks power. The A/C runs even when the system is not activated, which the manufacturer claims is due to the defrost system. However, it is possible that there was a design flaw and Nissan is avoiding repair charges. Overall, it is clear that improvements could be made to this vehicle.

I purchased the Nissan 6 months ago and I have not been disappointed. It has a cool exterior, great image and is capable offroad. However, if you plan on driving this vehicle around town like I do, you should think twice. The ride is uncomfortable, especially when compared to a CR-V. The fuel mileage is poor and the worst thing is the engine performance. In short, this vehicle is very slow! Fortunately, Nissan will improve on that for 2005. While the numbers are impressive on paper, this is a very heavy SUV and hence simply slow. Before making a purchase, I recommend test driving a Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV-4 and Ford Escape. They cost about the same and should meet your needs just fine. Don't spend money on image alone!
