2016 Honda Fit problems

The Honda Fit (Japanese: ホンダ・フィット, Hepburn: Honda Fitto) or Honda Jazz is a small car manufactured and marketed by Honda since 2001 over four generations. It has a five-door hatchback body style and is considered a supermini in the United Kingdom, a subcompact car in the United States, and a light car in Australia. Marketed worldwide and manufactured at ten plants in eight countries, sales reached almost 5 million by mid-2013. Honda uses the "Jazz" nameplate in Europe, Oceania, the Middle East, Africa, Hong Kong, Macau, Southeast Asia and India; and "Fit" in Japan, Sri Lanka, China, Taiwan and the Americas.

Sharing Honda's global small car platform with the City, Airwave, first-generation Mobilio, Freed and HR-V/Vezel, the Fit is noted for its one-box or monospace design; forward-located fuel tank; configurable seats that fold in several ways to accommodate cargo in varying shapes and sizes— and cargo volume competitive to larger vehicles.

Honda released hybrid petrol-electric versions of the Fit in Japan in October 2010 and in Europe in early 2011. In 2012, Honda released the Fit EV, a limited-production all-electric version based on the second-generation model in the United States and Japan, and was widely regarded as a compliance car.

The fourth-generation model released in 2019 is currently sold in Japan, Europe, China, Taiwan, South Africa, Brunei and Singapore. Starting from 2020, the model was phased out in most Southeast Asian and Latin American countries to be replaced by the larger City Hatchback, while it was withdrawn entirely from the North American market due to falling demand within the subcompact segment.

Common 2016 Honda Fit problems

The Honda Fit 2016 has several common problems that owners have reported, including ignition coil failure, uncomfortable seats, starter failure, fuel filler door issues, transmission problems, engine problems, water leaks, suspension issues, dashboard warning lights, and electric power steering failure.

Ignition coil failure is a widespread issue in the 2007 to 2016 Honda Fit models, which can lead to driveability issues like stalling, loss of power, and stuttering. Many owners have had to replace their coil packs to address the problem.

Uncomfortable seats are another common complaint among Honda Fit owners. Many drivers have experienced neck and back pains due to flat and unsupportive seats, and some have had to buy seat cushions and headrests to address this problem.

Starter failure is a problem that has affected the 2015 Honda Fit, with some reports of starter failures occurring at around 46,000 miles. Drivers have reported intermittent starting issues, and some have had to use a jump start battery pack to get the engine running.

Fuel filler door issues have affected the 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2014 Honda Fit models, with some owners reporting that their fuel door refuses to open. This issue can be fixed by getting a revised fuel fill push lifter from Honda.

Transmission problems have affected some Honda Fit models, particularly the earlier ones (2007-2008), with issues such as harsh shifting or transmission failure.

Water leaks have affected some Fits, especially in the 2009-2013 range, often due to issues with the door seals or the air conditioning system.

Dashboard warning lights have been an issue in the 2015-2016 models, with various warning lights illuminating due to electrical issues.

In addition to these problems, the 2015-2020 Honda Fit models have had issues with the engine and electrical systems, including a bad VTC actuator causing a rattling noise from the engine at start-up, problems with fuel injectors, ignition coils, or carbon buildup on intake valves causing the engine to misfire, and the Start/Stop switch malfunctioning or a failing starter motor causing the vehicle not to start.

The 2015 Honda Fit, in particular, has received more complaints than later model years, with problems mostly minor but affecting the engine and electrical systems.

Honda Service Bulletin 16-034 talks about the engine misfiring problems with codes DTC P0300 (random misfire detected) or P0301-P0304 (misfire detected in cylinders 1-4) and describes the diagnosis and repair procedure, which may involve replacing spark plugs, ignition coils, or fuel injectors.

2019 Honda Fit Service Bulletin 16-088 mentions the problem where the engine rattles loudly for about 2 seconds at cold start-up, which can be caused by a faulty valve timing control (VTC) actuator that needs to be replaced.

The problem with the engine misfiring with codes P0300-P0304 can also be caused by carbon buildup on intake valves, which can be cleaned using the process described in Honda Service Bulletin 21-007.

When buying a used Honda Fit, it is essential to check for recalls on the NHTSA website, verify that all outstanding recalls have been completed, check for rattling noises when the car is started cold, and ensure that the instrument cluster display works in all areas. It is also recommended to have the car properly inspected by a mechanic before buying.

What is the most common problem with Honda Fit?

Many drivers have reported experiencing back and neck pain when driving their Honda Fit for long hours. Most point to the model's head restraints as the culprit because they're inclined forward, forcing the driver's head to tilt forward. Several drivers have also complained that the seats feel flat and unsupportive.

How long can a 2016 Honda Fit last?

We mentioned that the standard lifespan for the Honda Fit is around 150,000 miles. Thus, the high mileage for the car is anything over 100,000 miles. Once it reaches this point, it's far more likely to experience issues that cost more to repair than the car is worth for any driver.

Which year of Honda Fit is most reliable?

Here are the most reliable years for the Honda Fit in the used market:

  • 2017 Honda Fit.
  • 2012 Honda Fit.
  • 2019 Honda Fit.

Why did Honda stop making the fit?

While the Honda Fit was a popular car for more than a decade, in the late 20-teens, sales started to decline. Eventually, Honda decided that it wasn't worth producing anymore. It should be noted, however, that the Honda Fit has remained in production in other countries; in many places, it's called the Honda Jazz.

POWER TRAIN,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-15
  • VIN: 3HGGK5H81GM
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The cvt transmission is going out. The dealer has conformed this. This vehicle only has 120000 miles on it and has had every transmission service that was recommended. When this goes completely it could cause an accident at freeway speeds. I believe this model year needs to be added to the cvt recall list and should be covered by honda to 150000 since they clearly know they have an issue here.

STEERING,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-21
  • VIN: JHMGK5H52GX
  • Components: STEERING,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The big recall with Honda and Acura, it lists the 2018-2019 Honda fit as having issues with the fuel pump modular. I've had the same issues with my 2016 for a few years now. I've stalled while driving and the steering wheel locks up when that happens. When starting from a stop, it is worse. I once was taking a left turn and it happened. Luckily I wasn't going across during a busy time, I might have been hit. I've gotten my car looked at several times and no one could tell me what was wrong. I even put in a new fuel pump because all of the systems seemed to be related to the fuel pump. And that didn't change anything either. It has to be the modular but whatever it is, this is serious and I cannot believe the 2016 has not been included in the recall. I have to mash the gas a lot, it seems to kind of help in preventing stalling sometimes. But if you have someone right in front of you, and you're making a turn, thats very difficult to mash the gas to prevent a stall while turning. I know I am mentioning turning a lot, it doesn't matter if I am turning or going straight, but I feel like it's more dangerous when it happens while turning as the steering wheel locks up when the car stalls. Throwing it in neutral doesn't even unlock the steering wheel. You can't quickly fix the issue, you have to switch the ignition off and restart it to unlock the steering wheel, that's not something that can be done quick enough to avoid an accident that is about to happen right before your eyes. Please look into this. I feel like it is immoral of Honda to not include other Fit models in the recall. They must know it's not only the 2018-2019 models. There is no way that my car is the only 2016 this is happening to. I greatly appreciate any effort you are willing to put into investigating this matter.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-02-05
  • VIN: JHMGK5H71GX
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The gauge cluster that shows your mileage and fuel levels and maintenance schedule goes out intermittently or altogether blank. It started a couple years ago and at this time I only have 45,000 miles on it. Couple years ago it probably had around 30,000 miles on it. It mainly does it when it’s cold, but it has done it in the summer lately. It gets all sketchy or completely blank. Drive several miles, it comes back on. I’ve read ALOT of complaints. There are way too many complaints on this issue in very little mileage. It is very expensive to fix, and I should not have to pay that kind of money when there aren’t that many miles on it. I had to replace a starter about a year ago. Ridiculous. Like I stated above, I have 45,000 miles on the car at this time. I have had older cars and put way more miles on it and never had a starter problem. I think these matters need addressed and the consumers have it corrected by Honda at their expense. I’ve already had to spend $700 for a starter for a very low mileage car. What is my recourse? I need this fixed before it goes out completely and won’t know how much gas I have or when my maintenance needs to be done.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-18
  • VIN: JHMGK5H53GX
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: There have been multiple airbag system warning lights on my Honda Fit over the past couple of months. Initially, the driver side airbag inflator warning illuminated and I was able to reset it. Now the passenger side inflator is setting off the warning and it won't reset.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-02
  • VIN: 3HGGK5H56GM
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Fuel Gauge display on Honda Fit 2016 not working properly. Outside temperature between 35 and 40 Fahrenheit. Internet search showed many other Honda Fit owners facing same issue
2024-01-01

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-01
  • VIN: JHMGK5H7XGX
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The odometer is digital only. It started to fail in the last couple months in that the digits would appear jumbled (unintelligible) or would be completely blank. Consequently, I am then unable to see my fuel gauge as well as mileage/oil life, which I believe poses a safety concern. If it fails completely then I am unable to tell when I need an oil change and, worse, when I am out of gas. Fortunately, it functions normally every now and then, particularly in warmer weather. I will be mentioning this to the local mechanic this week but have not contacted the local Honda dealership and have not had this investigated beyond my own experiences. As a side note, the last time I went to the Honda dealership (for an A/C issue), they were unable to diagnose the issue after numerous, expensive visits. Went to the local mechanic who fixed it immediately and cost only $25. I researched this issue and appears there is a community of Honda Fit owners who are experiencing this, many with graver experiences than mine. Thank you for taking the time to review this important concern. I am happy to send photos since the upload photos function doesn't work for me. When I click the upload button it disappears and there are no other possible actions.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-30
  • VIN: JHMGK5H53GX
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The gauge cluster started flickering in cold weather only. I asked Honda to review it and take a picture of the problem and explain. Every explanation online for this existing problems seems to be cracked solder joints. Yet HONDA wants to charge me 1.1K the replace the entire system for what they vaguely described as “internal error” if it was internal error, I’d see lot more of a problem with the computer system. It’s obvious it’s the connections that are wrong. The board is probably fine. Yet they want to charge me 1.1K for a KNOWN problems thousands of other Hondas have experienced. This is not fair. I’ve never filled this out but this happened right after my warranty ran out. I can’t afford to fix this. I won’t be able to see my fuel gauge, or any weird oil change errors that pop. That is a safety issue. I can’t see my mileage. Or oil percentage. Can anyone help me? There’s so many cases of this on Reddit.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-28
  • VIN: 3HGGK5G76GM
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: We own a 2016 Honda Fit with 52,000 miles, and the fuel gauge/speed/odometer display does not work. It completely fails in the cold. This is major safety issue since we can't read the fuel level nor see how fast or slow I'm driving. Our car is currently at the Conicelli Honda dealership. After trying to get this fix or diagnosed for years, Conicelli thinks the problem is a loose or failing solder joint. I spoke with Honda and they is no current recall on this problem. That said and apparently, it is a common issue based on a YouTube video, [XXX] . This is major safety issue that should not fail at 52,000 miles. Honda should be made aware of this issue and fix the problem. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-01
  • VIN: JHMGK5H53GX
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Vehicle has 16,000 miles on the odometer. Fuel gauge on the right side of the panel often blanks out. Sometimes it comes back when tapped with a finger. Sometimes it flickers while driving. This appears to be a very common problem with this vehicle but has not yet been recalled.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-31
  • VIN: JHMGK5H77GX
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: I was told that my vehicle has a defective VTC Actuator part per Honda notice 16-088 that will cause catastrophic failure of the engine and drivetrain. After diagnosis with the dealership they confirmed the risk stating, "The VTC does control the timing so it could cause it to jump timing. If that happens there is a possibility of catastrophic failure if you don't catch it quick enough." Despite bringing the vehicle in for repair 3 times after the release of the notice there was no attempt to repair the vehicle inside the warranty period. I am the original owner and reported the issue immediately after purchasing it as the characteristic "Rattle/grinding" was quite noticable on startup. We asked about this noise and was told, "Its normal." On my next service visit, after the expiration of the warranty at 60k miles, I was asked to pay $1800 to repair it. I pointed out the prior visits and the previous inquiries to be told (via phone) that because there is no formal recall they will not repair the part. Upon research I recently discovered Honda is subject to a class action lawsuit on this same issue. I fear without a recall my vehicle will suffer a failure which will place us at risk. I cannot afford the $1800 quoted to repair the manufacturers defect.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-02
  • VIN: 3HGGK5H59GM
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Right gauge of gauge cluster panel is often blank or distorted. This gauge shows mileage, fuel amount, and the time. At times, all 3 of these items are wrong. When the gauge does not display correctly, the smart power control unit (operation of door locks) does not work. This is a safety issue because a driver could run out of fuel or may not be able to access their vehicle. There is only one key hole on the entire vehicle and that is on the driver's side. When the gauge is not working, you have to manually unlock and lock the doors and cannot set the alarm system. I took my car into a Honda dealership to diagnose this issue and was told it would cost over a thousand dollars to repair and that the part was on backorder because this is a common issue. (The attached invoice states: "Operation of door locks runs through gauge cluster.") I also contacted Honda directly to see if they would cover the cost of repairs and they told me my vehicle was no longer under warranty. Vehicle has not been repaired.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-19
  • VIN: JHMGK5H76GX
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2016 Honda Fit. The contact stated that the right gauge on the instrument cluster intermittently went blank or became distorted. The contact also stated that the fuel gauge provided inaccurate readings. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 61,000.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-01
  • VIN: JHMGK5H58GX
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The steering wheel locks when I park the car and turn the ignition off. The steering wheel stays locked (warning light) when I turn the key in the ignition and the car does not start. Now it stays locked about 90% of the time. The solution (found online, from other drivers) is to take the key out of the ignition, gently turn the steering wheel to the right, then to the left several times; put the key in the ignition & start the car. I sometimes have to repeat the process several times before the car starts. It makes me feel unsafe when I can't start the car and leave an area quickly. I have not reported the problem to the dealer, and it has not been inspected. But I will report it because it happens so frequently.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-12-06
  • VIN: JHMGK5H74GX
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: When it is cold outside the gauge cluster fails due to a loose solder connection on the instrument panel circuit board. This is a common and know issue with 2015/2016 Honda Fits.
2023-03-12

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-01
  • VIN: 3HGGK5H87GM
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Smart Power Control Unit stopped working and had to pay out of pocket over $1200 due to no warranties applicable. Have heard from online forums that this is a very common part malfunction in the 2016 models from Honda and due to the high amount of incidents and for how expensive of a repair this turns out to be the part should be covered by Honda as they already cover the actual on and off switch button.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-14
  • VIN: JHMGK5H53GX
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2016 Honda Fit. The contact stated while starting the vehicle, the LED display was inoperable. The contact stated that the speedometer, tachometer, and fuel gauge were also inoperable. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the contact was informed that the instrument panel needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the cause of the failure was not under recall, and that the vehicle was no longer under warranty. The failure mileage was 51,000.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-08
  • VIN: jhmgk5h58gx
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: When I start the car in cool/colder weather (<60 F), I notice that the fuel gauge/mileage indicator in the dashboard does not turn on. It remains blank. Sometimes, after a little while, the indicator does turn on, but displays a bunch of gibberish. Only after the car has been driven for ~20 minutes or so does the indicator turn back to normal. Originally, this occurred and would be fixed almost immediately (within a couple minutes). However, it has steadily gotten worse over time the point where I cannot tell how much fuel is left, the oil life, and other important indicators.

2016 Honda Fit recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2016 Honda Fit.

2015-10-23
  • Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Fit LX-trim vehicles manufactured April 11, 2014, to July 02, 2015 and not equipped with a sunroof. In the affected vehicles, the rear grab handle brackets were not manufactured properly, and as a result, the brackets may puncture the side curtain air bags upon their deployment. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 214, "Side Impact Protection" and number 226, "Ejection Mitigation".
  • Consequence: If the side curtain air bags are punctured upon deployment, the outboard seat occupants may be at a higher risk of injury during a crash.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear grab handle bracket, free of charge. The recall began on December 18, 2015. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is JV8.

Negative 2016 Honda Fit car reviews

  1. Emmet Jast 2024-10-07

Hello! We wanted to let you know that while Honda is generally known for being a reliable brand, there have been some issues with faulty fuel injectors in certain vehicles. Unfortunately, this was the case with our 2016 Fit, and we had to replace the injectors for $2,000 just after the 3-year warranty expired. We understand that this can be frustrating, but we wanted to share our experience with you. Thank you for considering this information before making your purchase.

  2. Buddy Jakubowski 2024-10-04

I read all the reviews and thought I would get one. However, when I took it for a test drive, the erratic noise level drove me nuts. It seems like the Fit has way too little noise padding in it. I used to have an older Honda Civic and I had to cut and place heavy rubber back carpeting over everything I could to reduce the noise. If you're considering buying this, you might want to keep this in mind.

  3. Chadrick Rowe 2024-06-16

The heating system in my car takes an unusually long time to warm up, even after driving for over 15 miles at speeds between 20 and 40 mph. Despite the air from the vents reaching 100 degrees, the dealer has informed me that this is normal. Unfortunately, I have had to endure freezing temperatures in this car for three winters now. While I initially purchased this car for its great gas mileage, I will have to resort to driving my truck during the winter months.

  4. Salvatore Crona 2024-03-25

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that I noticed that Honda charges extra for some accessories that you might consider basic, such as floor mats and cargo covers. I understand that this can be frustrating, especially if you're used to getting these items included in your purchase. Have you tried talking to the dealer to see if they can include these items for you? In my experience, it's always worth asking. Best of luck with your Honda Fit!

  5. Glennie Schmidt 2024-01-26

The vehicle is experiencing major electrical issues, causing the engine to stop unexpectedly and issues with the Bluetooth and radio. Despite the dealer's assurance that there is no problem, an independent garage was able to identify 17 error codes when using a diagnostic device. It is clear that there are significant issues that need to be addressed.

Positive 2016 Honda Fit car reviews

  1. Elwyn Romaguera 2025-01-08

Congratulations on your new car! It's great to hear that you're enjoying your 2016 Fit EX so far. It sounds like the EX level tires and wheels really add to the stylish look of the car. It's also great to hear that the trim upgrades from the LX model offer a lot of value for the money. The cargo capabilities seem more than adequate for your needs, which is perfect. It's also good to know that the rear seat comfort and room seem really good. I understand that the car is still a subcompact economy car underneath, but it seems like Honda did a good job with muffling sounds. I hope that the seat comfort won't be too much of an issue on long road trips. Thank you for sharing your honest opinion about the car, it's always helpful to hear both the pros and cons. Enjoy your new ride!I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you mentioned being bothered by something that you thought would be the least of your worries. However, I'm glad to hear that overall you find the economy car to be excellent. If you're in the market for a new car, I highly recommend giving it a test drive to get a feel for it. **1 year update** I'm happy to report that after almost 19000 miles, I haven't had any problems with it. I'm averaging almost 38mpg on each tank in mixed driving, and the seats are comfy. The back seat is adequate for 2 adults, and the cargo area is really good for what I need. I've owned several Hondas and their A/C systems all seem to struggle during our hottest summer days here in AZ, the Fit is no different. My Chevys and Toyotas don't have the same issue. But that's my only complaint. Well, that and no volume dial - Honda please fix that! I absolutely love my Fit and highly recommend it!

  2. Justus Schmeler 2024-11-25

I really enjoyed everything about the fit, but unfortunately my back started to hurt after a 20 minute test drive. That's why I'm considering other cars. If Honda were to improve the seats, I would buy this car in a heartbeat. I hope Honda receives this message and takes it into consideration.

  3. Gillian Mueller 2024-11-10

The newer model of Fit gets better gas mileage and looks a little sportier. While it's a great car, I understand your frustration with the lack of entertainment center options and support for Android Auto and similar products.

If you're in the market for a smaller commuter car, I highly recommend the Honda Fit. It offers the best value by far.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share with you how much we love our yellow 2016 Honda Fit EX that we bought in April 2018. It's been over 2 years and we've driven 32,000 km, and I have to say, this car has exceeded our expectations in every way! Not only is it fuel-efficient and performs well, but it also looks great (it's yellow!) and has an incredibly versatile interior. We've taken it on so many adventures, from carrying 4 people to carrying two kayaks on the roof, and even going camping with three adults and three bikes on the roof. We've even done 4000 km camping trips with two people for two weeks with all our tenting/hiking/biking gear and two full suspension mountain bikes **inside** to maintain aerodynamics on the roof. (The secret is to fully remove the two rear seats as per a YouTube hack.) Who needs an SUV when you have a car like this? Thank you for letting me share our experience with you!

Jan 8, 2023 ... Intermittent no starts due to this are pretty common on 15+ Hondas. Mostly the Pilots, but I believe the Fits had the same issue as well.
