2007 Gmc Envoy problems

gmc logo

The GMC Envoy is a mid-size SUV manufactured and marketed by General Motors for the 1998 to 2009 model years over two generations. Adopting a nameplate used by GM Canada, the Envoy was a rebadged variant of the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, Oldsmobile Bravada, Buick Rainier, Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 9-7X.

General Motors assembled the model line at its Moraine Assembly (Moraine, Ohio) and Oklahoma City Assembly (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma). Both facilities were closed by 2008, leading to the discontinuation of the model line. The Envoy was not directly replaced in the GMC model line as General Motors transitioned its smaller SUVs to unibody-chassis designs, introducing the smaller GMC Terrain and larger GMC Acadia.

First generation (1998–2000)

The first generation GMC Envoy was introduced for the 1998 model year. Introduced a year before the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, the Envoy was the highest-trim version of the GMC Jimmy SUV. In line with the Oldsmobile Bravada, the Envoy was fitted with a leather-trim interior, floor-mounted shifter, and a largely monochromatic exterior with aluminum-alloy wheels. In line with the TrailBlazer and the Bravada, the Envoy trim was offered only in the five-door version.

The Envoy had many extra features not available on the regular Jimmy 4-door including: a remote trunk release, heated driver's and passenger's seats, a Bose sound system, and High Intensity Discharge headlights. Optional features included: a power sunroof, a panic alarm, an anti-theft system, and a power front driver & passenger seat.

GMC ended sales of the first generation Envoy after the 2000 model year as the division adopted the name to replace the entire Jimmy SUV line for 2002.

Common 2007 Gmc Envoy problems

The GMC Envoy, a mid-size SUV produced by General Motors, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. These issues range from exhaust leaks to electrical and transmission problems.

  • Ignition Switch Failure: Owners of 2008 GMC Envoys have reported problems turning the ignition switch on, with the issue occurring repeatedly. This problem has been reported to start within 70,000 miles of ownership, and replacing the ignition switch can cost at least $250.
  • Electrical Issues: The 2007 GMC Envoy has generated 273 complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, with 73 of these being for electrical issues. A recall was issued in 2015 due to daytime running lights failing to engage due to a control module malfunction. Additionally, 66 fuel system complaints point to issues with the fuel gauge, with drivers reporting inaccurate fuel level readings and the check engine light coming on at the same time as the low fuel light.
  • Transmission Problems: The 4L60E transmission in the 2007 GMC Envoy does not have a good track record when it comes to reliability. Transmission rebuild or replacement can be necessary, and the cost can vary depending on the specific issue.
  • DOD System Failure: GMC Envoys with the 5.3 liter V8 and the Displacement on Demand (DOD) system, which shuts off half the cylinders when cruising at lower speeds, can experience lifter failures after about 150,000 miles. This can result in the need for an engine rebuild or replacement, which can be a costly repair .
  • Rear Main Seal Leak: This is a common problem with these vehicles as they age, and it involves pulling the transmission back just enough to slide in a new seal. This is a labor-intensive job that can take up to 10 hours in a shop and cost at least $1,000 .
  • Throttle Body Failure: If the Envoy is telling the driver to reduce engine power but all spark plugs, coils, spark plug wires, map, and MAF sensors have been replaced, it is likely caused by a dirty throttle body. A new throttle body and wiring harness will fix the problem .
  • Failing Transmission: The 4L60E transmission does not have a good track record when it comes to reliability. However, they are cheaper than many other transmissions if rebuilding or replacing is necessary.
  • Engine Electrical Issues: Engine electrical issues, such as problems with the engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, fuel leaks, oil leaks, sensors, emission-control devices, fuel-injection system, fuel gauge/sender, fuel pump, and problems filling up the tank, have been reported by owners.
  • Steering and Suspension Problems: Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage, power steering pumps and hoses, leaks, wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension, driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, four-wheel-drive/all-wheel-drive components, driveline vibration, electrical failure, traction control, and electronic stability control problems have been reported.

These common problems with the GMC Envoy highlight the importance of regular maintenance and addressing issues as soon as they arise to prevent more costly repairs in the future.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-01
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: 1GKDT13SX72
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2007 GMC Envoy. The contact stated that the power switch used to adjust the front driver seat had failed to operate as needed. The contact stated that the power switch had been replaced a total of three times within a two-month time frame. Recently, the power switch had failed for a fourth time and as the contact went to replace the fuse, the fuse box was so hot that it burned the contact's right hand and left a blister. The contact did not seek any medical attention for the injury. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 12V406000 (Electrical System, Visibility) which was linked to the failure. The dealer nor the manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-01
  • VIN: 1GKDT13S472
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Headlights go out on there own and may come back on a few minutes later but right back out again. The vehicle had this as a recall but if it was repaired the repair is not working. The manufacturer is claiming the recall expired, obviously without them making contact to do the repair. Now they think it's good business practice to ignore their problem and put customers lives at risk.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-07-02
  • VIN: 1GKDT13S472
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: THE DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS (DRL) AND THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS DO NOT LIGHT EVEN WHEN THE DASHBOARD LIGHT SWITCH IS PLACED IN THE 'HEADLIGHT' ON POSITION. TROUBLESHOOTING REVEALED THAT THIS FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY THE BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) LOCATED BENEATH THE REAR SEAT. A DIGITAL LOGIC SIGNAL FROM THIS MODULE, BASED ON SENSOR INPUTS FROM THE AMBIENT LIGHT SENSOR, PARKING BRAKE AND WINDSHIELD WIPERS, IS PROVIDED TO THE UNDER-HOOD ELECTRONIC RELAY THAT ACTIVATES THE HEADLIGHTS. THERE ARE THREE POSSIBLE SIGNAL OUTPUTS FROM THE BCM...A LOGIC LOW (LIGHTS OFF), A LOGIC HIGH (LOW BEAMS FULL ON) OR A PULSE WIDTH MODULATED SIGNAL TO CREATE THE DIMMER DRL LOW BEAM INTENSITY. IF THE BCM FAILS, THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS WILL NOT TURN ON. THERE IS NO AFFIRMATIVE INPUT TO THE ELECTRONIC RELAY FROM THE LIGHT SWITCH, NOT ROUTED THROUGH THE BCM, TO ACTIVATE THE LOW BEAM HEADLAMPS. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. WHEN THE BCM FAILS AT NIGHT, THE DRIVER HAS NO LOW BEAM HEADLAMPS. THE ONLY LIGHTS AVAILABLE ARE THE FOG LAMPS OR THE HIGH BEAM LAMPS, BUT ONLY AFTER SETTING THE DASHBOARD LIGHT SWITCH TO THE HEADLAMP POSITION. HEADLAMPS ARE A NECESSITY, NOT A OPTIONAL FEATURE. THEIR OPERATION SHOULD NOT RELY ON AN ELECTRONIC SUB-SYSTEM WHOSE FAILURE MODE PREVENTS THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS FROM WORKING. THIS SYSTEM WAS DESIGNED THE 'EASY' WAY WITHOUT REGARDS TO VEHICLE SAFETY...NAMELY THAT WHEN THE DASHBOARD LIGHT SWITCH IS IN THE ON POSITION, THE HEADLIGHTS ARE ENABLED BY A SIGNAL DIRECTLY FROM THAT SWITCH. WITHOUT AN AFFIRMATIVE ENABLING SIGNAL FROM THE MANUAL DASHBOARD LIGHT SWITCH, THE SYSTEM AND VEHICLE OPERATOR IS AT THE MERCY OF THE BCM, WHICH COULD FAIL AT NIGHT OR ON THE WEEKEND (WHEN A REPAIR SHOP IS UNAVAILABLE) RENDERING THE VEHICLE DANGEROUS OR UN-DRIVEABLE.

  • Summary: WE HAVE A 2007 GMC ENVOY, INTERMITTENTLY OUR HEADLAMPS AND DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS WOULD CUT OFF AND ON, SOMETIMES WHILE WE HAVE BEEN DRIVING IN THE CITY AND ON THE HIGHWAY AND SOMETIMES RIGHT WHEN WE PUT THE VEHICLE IN DRIVE BEFORE WE MOVE. ABOUT A WEEK AGO THEY CUT OFF AND HAVE NOT EVER CUT BACK ON. WE FOUND ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE THAT THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL FOR THE HEADLAMPS AND DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS ON 2006 - 2007 GMC ENVOYS, THE RECALL IS FOR THE HEADLAMP MODULE. WE CONTACTED OUR LOCAL DEALER ABOUT GETTING THE RECALL REPAIRED BUT WERE TOLD OUR "VIN" WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. WE ALSO CONTACTED GM DIRECTLY AND SPENT OVER AN HOUR ON THE PHONE WITH THEIR CUSTOMER SUPPORT AS WELL AS A SUPERVISOR ONLY TO BE TOLD OVER AND OVER THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO TO HELP. WE TOOK OUR VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIR SINCE IT IS ILLEGAL TO DRIVE AT NIGHT WITHOUT HEADLIGHTS, AFTER THEY DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE WITH OUR 2007 GMC ENVOY THEY REPORTED THAT THE PROBLEM WITH OUR 2007 GMC ENVOY IS THE EXACT SAME ISSUE AS THE ONES THAT ARE COVERED IN THE RECALL, THE HEADLAMP MODULE IS BAD! WE ONCE AGAIN CALLED GM, GAVE THEM THE DIAGNOSES BUT ONCE AGAIN THEY SAID THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO! NEEDLESS TO SAY WE ARE BEYOND FRUSTRATED.

2007 Gmc Envoy recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2007 Gmc Envoy.

2015-09-24
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: VISIBILITY:POWER WINDOW DEVICES AND CONTROLS
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2006-2007 Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer and GMC Envoy vehicles, and 2006 GMC Envoy XL and Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT vehicles. Fluid may enter into the driver's door master power window switch module, causing corrosion that could result in a short in the circuit board, causing window switches to become inoperative. Previously, the affected vehicles may have had their master power window switch module treated with a protective coating, instead of having it replaced.
  • Consequence: The protective coating may not eliminate the risk that the circuit board could short and result in a fire, even while the vehicle is unattended.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install a new driver's door switch module, free of charge. The recall began on November 2, 2015. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 15700.
2015-08-14
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix, 2006-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2007 Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT, GMC Envoy XL, 2006-2008 Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 9-7x vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the headlamp driver module (HDM) may overheat and fail, causing the headlamps and daytime running lights to not illuminate.
  • Consequence: Headlamps that do not illuminate reduce the driver's ability to see the roadway and reduce the vehicle's visibility to oncoming vehicles, both of which increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the HDM, free of charge. The recall began on May 17, 2016. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is 14291.
2014-07-02
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: VISIBILITY:POWER WINDOW DEVICES AND CONTROLS
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 SAAB 9-7x; 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL; and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier and Isuzu Ascender vehicles. Fluid may enter the driver's door master power window switch module, causing corrosion that could result in a short in the circuit board. A short may cause the power door lock and power window switches to function intermittently or become inoperative. The short may also cause overheating, which could melt components of the door module, producing odor, smoke, or a fire.
  • Consequence: A short in the circuit board could lead to a fire, increasing the risk of personal injury. A fire could occur even while the vehicle is not in use. As a precaution, owners are advised to park outside until the remedy has been made.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the part number on the door module, and install a new door module if necessary, free of charge. Parts for the remedy are not currently available. An interim letter was mailed to owners in August 2014. A second owner letter will be mailed when parts are available. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-462-8782 (GMC), 1-800-955-9007 (SAAB), and 1-800-255-6727 (Isuzu). GM's number for this recall is 14309. NOTE: This recall provides a new remedy for all vehicles covered by recall 13V-248. Vehicles whose modules were modified but not replaced as part of the previous recall remedy must have their vehicles remedied again under this campaign.

  • Summary: General Motors (GM) is recalling certain model year 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, SAAB 9-7x, and Isuzu Ascender vehicles, originally sold or currently registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia. Fluid may enter the driver's door module, causing corrosion that could result in a short in the circuit board.
  • Remedy: Parts for this recall are expected to available in March 2013. GM will notify Buick, Chevrolet, and GMC owners when parts are available. Buick owners may contact the owner center at 1-800-521-7300, Chevrolet owners at 1-866-694-6546, and GMC owners at 1-866-996-9463. Isuzu owners will be notified by Isuzu Motors when parts are available. Owners may contact Isuzu customer service at 1-800-255-6727. SAAB owners will be notified by SAAB Cars North America when parts are available and for inquiries, owners may call SAAB customer service at 1-800-955-9007.
