Acura Tl 2002 problems
The Acura TL is a car that was manufactured by Acura, the luxury division of Honda. It was introduced in 1995 to replace the Acura Vigor and was badged for the Japanese-market from 1996 to 2000 as the Honda Inspire and from 1996 to 2004 as the Honda Saber. The TL was Acura's best-selling model until it was outsold by the MDX in 2007. In 2005, it ranked as the second best-selling luxury sedan in the United States behind the BMW 3 Series, but sales decreased after the 2008 model year. Four generations of the Acura TL were produced, with the final fourth generation TL premiering in 2008 as a 2009 model and ending production in 2014, when it was replaced together with the TSX by the TLX.
First generation (UA1–UA3; 1996–1998)
The TL "Touring Luxury" debuted as 1996 model, first with the 1996 2.5 TL available with the 2.5 L 176 hp (131 kW) SOHC 20-valve 5-cylinder engine from the Vigor. The 3.2 TL used the 3.2 L 200 hp (149 kW) SOHC 24v V6 from the second generation Acura Legend. The model with the 2.0-liter inline-five was not offered in the US market. The debut of the TL signaled Acura's shift from traditional vehicle names to alphanumeric designations. By replacing recognizable names such as Vigor and Legend with a two-letter designation, the luxury maker hoped to focus consumer attention on the Acura name. The TL was the first Acura model to adopt the new naming scheme.
The 2.5 TL was positioned as the sporty model and the 3.2 focused more upon a luxurious ride. There were minimal styling differences between the two, but the 3.2 TL had larger tires despite the 2.5 TL's more sporty marketing. Moreover, the added power in the 3.2 TL gave it better acceleration. Both engines were mounted in a front-rear, or longitudinal position. This contrasted with the more typical transverse engine mount style, and was intended to provide better weight distribution and reduce nose dive. The engine mount design resulted in an elongated hood for the first generation TL, a shorter front overhang and longer wheelbase, fitting for a near-luxury car. The inline-5 engine in the 2.5 TL competed with similar 5-cylinder engines offered in Audi and Volvo models.
The first 1996 Acura TL was manufactured at Sayama, Japan on March 28, 1995. Sales of the 2.5 TL began in spring 1995, but the 3.2 TL was delayed until fall because of a U.S.-Japan trade dispute. The U.S. government had threatened to impose 100% tariffs on higher-priced Japanese cars in response a growing U.S.-Japan trade deficit. Ultimately a deal was reached which avoided the tariffs.
The first generation Acura TL had standard features including dual airbags, antilock brakes, automatic climate control, a cassette/CD player sound system, and power windows and locks. Leather was standard on the more upscale 3.2 TL, while the 2.5 TL featured a firmer suspension setup. Like its predecessor, the Vigor, this generation TL was a 4-door pillared hardtop, with frameless windows.

Common Acura Tl 2002 problems
The Acura TL, produced from 1996 to 2014, is known for its reliability and good performance. However, as with any vehicle, it can develop various issues over time and miles. The most common problems reported by Acura TL owners include engine troubles, electrical issues, transmission troubles, and interior accessories issues.
Engine issues are prevalent in the 2010 model year, where owners have reported excessive oil consumption. This issue can lead to engine failure if not addressed promptly. The engine consumes oil without any signs of leaks or blowouts, and if the driver fails to replenish the oil in time, the engine's parts wear out faster due to insufficient lubrication. This can cause various engine problems that can wreck the engine.
Electrical issues have been reported in some 2000 TLs, where odometers have prematurely failed. This issue doesn't stop the vehicle from driving, but it can be a headache when selling the vehicle later. In some cases, 2007 TL owners have also complained about battery drain issues.
Transmission troubles are common in the first-generation Acura TLs, with the 2003 model year being the biggest culprit. Owners have reported experiencing symptoms like gear slipping, sticky shifting, jerking, and even transmission failure. The most common fix is to replace the transmission system, which can be expensive.
Interior accessories issues have also been reported in the Acura TL. The interior tends to develop unsightly fractures that can ruin the aesthetic and even disable the passenger side airbag. This issue is prevalent in some 2000 TLs, 2007 TLs, and 2010 TLs.
In summary, the Acura TL is a reliable vehicle, but it can develop various issues over time and miles. It is essential to address these issues promptly to avoid more significant problems down the road.
What is the common problem with Acura TL?
The TL also has excellent ownership costs, low severity of repairs, and rarely develops major issues. The Acura TL can hit 100,000 miles or more without issue. Common Acura TL problems include engine troubles, electrical problems, and interior accessories issues.
How long do Acura TL engines last?

POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-12-04
- VIN: 19UUA56822A
- Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: My car has been automatically shutting off while driving. Bringing my car to a halt, not a full on stop but to the point my wheels lock up. Sort of like im slamming on my brake but I can't press my brake. I lose power steering, the entire car shuts off. Then I have to try and restart it, but it won't turn over. Sometimes its just for a few minutes. Other times Im stranded for hours. A few times its been days. After it dies and i turn the key off and then back on but not over ill have power. I have a kid and we've been stranded on an on ramp with cars going 60 all around us. The car just randomly shut off in the middle of the road. There's a lot of traffic around these parts and we were stuck, not even being able to get out of the vehicle with the cars going on each side of us. Ive done some research and ive seen thousands of other complaints about this issue since 2002. Ive had 3 different mechanics try to figure out what the issue was. Have had my car at the shop for weeks at a time. A few times even the mechanics couldn't get it started, and it had to sit for 3 days before it would start up again. The check engine light is on and all 3 different mechanics have fixed everything thats came up. After this started happening ive had to replace brakes and rotors several times. My car started shifting way to late. And feels like its starting to slip. This is a safety hazzard. Especially in larger cities.

The affected vehicles are equipped with a dual-stage driver frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion and other factors, including manufacturing variability that, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on July 1, 2015. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Owners may contact Acura customer service at 1-800-382-2238, select option 4. - Consequence: GEAR FAILURE COULD RESULT IN TRANSMISSION LOCKUP, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: ON VEHICLES WITH 15,000 MILES OR LESS, THE DEALER WILL UPDATE THE TRANSMISSION WITH A SIMPLE REVISION TO THE OIL COOLER RETURN LINE TO INCREASE LUBRICATION TO THE SECOND GEAR. ON VEHICLES WITH MORE THAN 15,000 MILES, THE DEALER WILL INSPECT THE TRANSMISSION TO IDENTIFY GEARS THAT HAVE ALREADY EXPERIENCED DISCOLORATION DUE TO OVERHEATING. IF DISCOLORATION EXISTS, THE TRANSMISSION WILL BE REPLACED IF DISCOLORATION IS NOT PRESENT, THE DEALER WILL PERFORM THE REVISION TO THE OIL COOLER RETURN LINE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 21, 2004, FOR PILOT, ODYSSEY, AND MDX OWNERS. This car has it all! With great styling, speed, comfort, and handling, you really couldn't ask for more.

I'm so glad I purchased this car pre-owned off a lease! It's been such a great ride. Although I did have a bit of trouble with the transmission going out at 104K miles and 7 years and 9 months from the date of purchase, my dealership was able to replace it just under the mandated extended warranty. I did have a couple of issues with the windshield wipers, but other than that, it's been a fantastic car. I must say, my dealership in Atl has been absolutely wonderful to me throughout this whole process!

I bought my beloved car with around 75k miles 4 years ago and it has been a loyal companion ever since. With regular servicing, it has been trouble-free until recently. Unfortunately, the transmission has been causing some issues which is a shame for such a beautiful car. The first time it happened, I paid out of pocket and spent 4k with AAMCO since Acura only offered a 30-day warranty. Three years and a few months later, it happened again. I tried to have it repaired again but AAMCO was unable to identify the issue or fix it. After almost 6 weeks with a rental car, I finally got my car back but it hasn't been the same since. I am currently in the market for a new car but nothing else seems to catch my eye. I am willing to give the TL another chance though.

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a great experience with your 2002 Acura! It's amazing how well it has aged and still feels like new after 6 years. The handling and acceleration sound impressive, and it's great to hear that you've never had a single mechanical issue. It's no wonder that you've become an Acura fan. Thank you for sharing your positive experience!

We bought ours new, we own 4 other cars but drive the Acura when we travel, sometimes because of the gps system other times for the comfort and dependability it has given us, however we will not buy another acura because the dealer service was terrible, the car was in several times for a noise that they kept insisting it was brakes, it was transmission. When we picked up our car from the transmission exchange, the radio (BOSE system) showed an error code, they kept the car and reset the code then the CD player showed an error code and they wanted us to buy a new system, never having any prior stereo issues we took it to Bose - Acura didn't remove the cds prior setting code this JAMS the cd deck!!

I have owned this car since late 2001, when it had around 77K miles. The Acura Type-S has impressive acceleration and comes with a lot of great standard options. Although the navigation system is a bit dated now, it still performs well. Unfortunately, the transmission has been unreliable from the start and has had to be replaced twice. Despite some initial resistance from the dealer, the issue was resolved. While the styling of Acura cars is generally quite bland, this car is still a reliable and solid choice. However, for my next purchase, I am considering an Audi or BMW for a more exciting driving experience.

Hello! I wanted to share an issue I've been experiencing with my car. When accelerating from a stop or slowing down and then speeding up, I've noticed that there is a delay before the transmission engages first gear very abruptly. Unfortunately, I've already been to the dealer five times and they have been unable to find a solution or acknowledge that there is a problem. I'm planning on going back and requesting a new transmission at the very least. Additionally, I've developed a stiff neck during my first couple of weeks driving this car. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Just a heads up, I wanted to share my experience with the self-dimming mirrors. When I bought my car used from a family member with 60,000 miles, I noticed that the mirrors had an acid in them that could leak and damage the shift lever and trim. Unfortunately, I did experience this issue myself. Additionally, I had some trouble with the transmission after the recall was done, which is something to keep in mind. I have to say, the customer service I received was not up to par, and I've had better experiences at a local Sonic drive-in. I also had some trouble with the brakes, as the rotors warped, but I was able to replace them with aftermarket parts myself. Overall, I just wanted to share my experience and let you know what to expect. Let me know if you have any questions!

The second Transmission is experiencing multiple failures, including blower motor, emissions sensor, brake rotors, and a defective rear view mirror. Additionally, the trim is coming loose on the dash and the thin metal is prone to denting. Despite its great mileage, the Acura falls short of the quality expected from a Honda. It is clear that improvements are needed to meet the high standards of the brand.

I chose to purchase an Acura based on the recommendations of consumer reports for its reliability and performance. However, my experience with the vehicle did not meet my expectations. Despite spending more money on an Acura over domestic and foreign brands, I encountered several issues. Although I appreciate the design and performance of the vehicle, I am disappointed that I had to replace the transmission twice and now have to purchase a new timing belt that costs over $1000 at only 7100 miles. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this model or endorse this brand any longer.
