The Honda CR-V (also sold as the Honda Breeze in China since 2019) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Honda since 1995. Initial models of the CR-V were built using the same platform as the Civic.

Honda began producing the CR-V in Sayama, Japan, and Swindon, United Kingdom, for worldwide markets, adding North American manufacturing sites in East Liberty, Ohio, United States, in 2007; El Salto, Jalisco, Mexico, in late 2007 (ended in early 2017); Alliston, Ontario, Canada, in 2012; and Greensburg, Indiana, United States, in February 2017. The CR-V is also produced in Wuhan for the Chinese market by Dongfeng Honda, and also marketed as the Breeze in China for the version produced at Guangzhou by Guangqi Honda.

Honda states "CR-V" stands for "Comfortable Runabout Vehicle," while the term "Compact Recreational Vehicle" is used in a British car review article that was republished by Honda, associating the model name with the Sports Utility Vehicle abbreviation of SU-V.

As of 2022, the CR-V is positioned between the smaller ZR-V (marketed as HR-V in North America) – which the CR-V shares platform with – and the larger North American market Passport/Pilot or the Chinese market Avancier/UR-V. It is currently Honda's best-selling vehicle in the world, and the second best-selling SUV globally in 2020.

Common 1997 Honda Cr-v problems

The Honda CR-V, first introduced in 1997, is known for its reliability and robustness. However, like any other vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported over the years. Here are some of the issues that have been identified in the first generation of Honda CR-Vs, based on the search results:

  • Radiator Failure: The radiator is another common issue in the first generation of CR-Vs. It's not uncommon for the radiator to leak or fail, which can cause the engine to overheat. Replacing the radiator is usually the only solution.
  • Rear Engine Mounts: The rear engine mounts in the CR-V can split, causing a thumping feel when accelerating. This issue is more pronounced in manual cars, as the clutch friction point can amplify the fault.
  • Rear Differential Oil Wear: A shudder when turning in tight circles, with the steering on full lock, can be caused by the rear differential oil wearing out. In most cases, an oil change can fix this issue. However, if it's too extreme, the differential may need to be replaced.
  • Water Pump Leaks: Water pumps can leak in the first generation of CR-Vs, causing the engine to overheat due to coolant loss. Unfortunately, replacing the water pump requires removing the timing belt, so it's recommended to replace the timing belt at the same time.
  • Front Door Striker Noise: The front door strikers in the CR-V can become noisy with age, although this is not a major mechanical problem. However, it can be very annoying for drivers and passengers.
  • Rear Brake Cylinder Leaks: The rear brake cylinders in the CR-V can leak brake fluid, which can cause the brakes to fail. It's essential to address this issue promptly to ensure the safety of the vehicle.
  • Clock in Dash: The clock in the dashboard of the CR-V can work intermittently or not at all. This is a common fault, and the part is now cheaper to replace with a genuine Honda part than a second-hand one from a wrecking yard.
  • Major Oil Leaks: The sump gasket in the CR-V is prone to major oil leaks, with nearly every single one leaking. The rubber gasket has small metal locators, and if not taken out of the block when replacing the gasket, the new one won't seal, and the leak will continue.

These are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the first generation of Honda CR-Vs. Proper maintenance, including regular inspections and timely repairs, can help prevent or address these issues, ensuring the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

How long can a 1997 Honda CR-V last?

The Honda CRV can run for well over 200,000 miles and, if maintained with a lot of tender love and care, it can keep chugging along even past 300,000 miles. Like all of Honda's vehicles, the CRV can last for such a long time because of the craftsmanship and high-quality materials that are used for its construction.

Best Year Used CR-V: 2015-2016

If you want a newer used model, then consider the 2015 to 2016 model years.

How reliable is older Honda CR-V?

The first generation of Honda CR-V launched all the way back in 1997. Whilst these cars were highly reliable when new, first-generation Honda CR-Vs are all more than 20 years old so will inevitably have problems that come with the passage of so much time. These can include rust, bad sway bar links, and oil leaks.

1997 Honda Cr-v recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 1997 Honda Cr-v.

2020-01-17
  • Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 1998 Acura 2.2CL, 1998-1999 Acura 2.3CL, 1998-1999 Acura 3.0CL, 2001 Acura 3.2CL and Acura MDX, 1998-2000 Honda Accord Coupe, Accord Sedan, Civic Sedan, Odyssey and Acura 3.5RL, 1999-2000 Acura 3.2TL, 1996-2000 Civic Coupe, 1997-2000 CR-V, 1997-1998 EV Plus, and 1998-1999 Isuzu Oasis vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver frontal air bag inflator, and replace it if necessary, with an inflator of a different design, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2020. Owners may contact American Honda's Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138 or Isuzu customer service at 1-800-255-6727.
2002-05-16
  • Manufacturer: AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN SEDANS, COUPES, HATCHBACKS, AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, ELECTRICAL CONTACTS IN THE IGNITION SWITCH CAN DEGRADE DUE TO THE HIGH ELECTRICAL CURRENT PASSING THROUGH THE SWITCH WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STARTED.
  • Consequence: WORN CONTACTS COULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL WITHOUT WARNING, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JUNE 14, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009 OR ACURA AT 1-800-382-2238.

Negative 1997 Honda Cr-v car reviews

  1. Sanford Effertz 2024-10-25

We purchased a Honda with high hopes, but unfortunately, it did not meet our expectations. The car broke down on the highway and while turning left onto a major road, causing us significant inconvenience. Despite having the transmission replaced three years after purchase, we still experienced overheating issues. As a result, we made the decision to sell the car five years later.

  2. Grant Mohr 2024-10-23

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. Although I bought it used, I have all the maintenance records and it looks like it was properly taken care of. However, I have noticed a few issues lately. For example, I've had to replace the battery twice in the last two years and the ignition six months ago, which cost me $700. Additionally, some pieces of the dashboard have fallen off and the steering wheel squeaks when I turn. On hot days, the left channel on the radio goes out and the air conditioner will need to be recharged this season. I also had to replace the PVC joints. Overall, it has been a bit of a money pit. I get 16-18 MPG in the suburbs and 20 MPG on the interstate. Lastly, I have experienced some electrical shocks. I hope this information is helpful to you!

  3. Brandon Funk 2024-10-20

This car has some quality issues. Firstly, it started stalling on me, which was quite frustrating. It stalled on the freeway a number of times and on the street, despite being an automatic transmission. Secondly, I found that the car was way underpowered, which made it difficult to accelerate onto freeways. Thirdly, the car handles poorly, which I found to be a bit of a challenge. The car is front heavy, which makes it difficult to maneuver and avoid things. Lastly, I found the steering wheel to be in an awkward position, like a van, and it was not adjustable. We got the car brand new from the dealer and used it a lot but took good care of it. My guess is that we probably got a lemon, but that is our first and last experience with Honda.

Positive 1997 Honda Cr-v car reviews

  1. Marc Lind 2025-01-08

I've had my CR-V for 10 years and it has 230,000 miles on it. I still have it because I haven't found anything better. I highly recommend it!

  2. Emmitt Schiller 2024-11-26

I've had my CRV for six years now and it's been the best car I've ever owned! I recently replaced the original tires at 90,000 miles and not one thing has gone wrong with the car. All I've done to the car at 92,000 miles is the routine changing of various fluids as stated in the owner's manual. It still has the original brakes and has averaged 28 mpg for the six years I've owned it. I plan to keep this car until it registers 200,000 miles. Honda really makes great cars!

  3. Kolby Cormier 2024-11-11

I must say, this is by far the best vehicle I have ever owned. With 75000.00 miles on it, all I've had to do was change the tires and oil. I have had zero problems with it!! Its value is still around $9000.00. It's a great value, and I will definitely buy a Honda again. Best regards, MJR.

  4. Salvatore Bartoletti 2024-11-07

I've owned this car for over a year now and it has been trouble-free, even during rainy Portland summers and winters. The car drives great and offers a fantastic view. I've only needed to do regular oil changes and tire rotations. I highly recommend getting a tune-up once it reaches 100K. I did mine around 95K and it significantly increased the car's horsepower. The CR-V also performs exceptionally well in rain and snow. I've had no issues driving on icy roads and in snow, as long as I drive slowly.

  5. Eldon Kohler 2024-09-26

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you're interested in buying a new 2017 Honda. That's great news! It's always exciting to upgrade to a new car. I understand that your current Honda is 20 years old, so it's definitely time for a change. Let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything I can do to help you with your purchase.
