1998 Honda Cr-v problems

honda logo

The Honda CR-V (also sold as the Honda Breeze in China since 2019) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Honda since 1995. Initial models of the CR-V were built using the same platform as the Civic.

Honda began producing the CR-V in Sayama, Japan, and Swindon, United Kingdom, for worldwide markets, adding North American manufacturing sites in East Liberty, Ohio, United States, in 2007; El Salto, Jalisco, Mexico, in late 2007 (ended in early 2017); Alliston, Ontario, Canada, in 2012; and Greensburg, Indiana, United States, in February 2017. The CR-V is also produced in Wuhan for the Chinese market by Dongfeng Honda, and also marketed as the Breeze in China for the version produced at Guangzhou by Guangqi Honda.

Honda states "CR-V" stands for "Comfortable Runabout Vehicle," while the term "Compact Recreational Vehicle" is used in a British car review article that was republished by Honda, associating the model name with the Sports Utility Vehicle abbreviation of SU-V.

As of 2022, the CR-V is positioned between the smaller ZR-V (marketed as HR-V in North America) – which the CR-V shares platform with – and the larger North American market Passport/Pilot or the Chinese market Avancier/UR-V. It is currently Honda's best-selling vehicle in the world, and the second best-selling SUV globally in 2020.

Common 1998 Honda Cr-v problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 1998 Honda CR-V, several common problems have been identified:

  1. Lower Ball Joint Issues: One of the most common problems reported is related to the lower ball joints. Owners have experienced issues where the ball joint pops out of the cup, leading to potential safety concerns and affecting the vehicle's stability and handling. Additionally, the tie rod ends may also show signs of wear and slack, impacting the steering responsiveness of the vehicle.
  2. Sway Bar End Links: Another prevalent issue with the 1998 Honda CR-V is related to the sway bar end links. These components are known to develop slack over time, causing popping noises when driving over bumps. This issue can affect the vehicle's suspension system and lead to a less comfortable driving experience.
  3. Interior Water Leaks: Some owners have reported instances of water leaks in the interior of the 1998 Honda CR-V. Water leaks can cause damage to the interior components, including the fabric and electronics, leading to potential mold growth and electrical issues. Identifying and addressing these leaks promptly is crucial to prevent further damage.

These common problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance and inspection of key components in the 1998 Honda CR-V to ensure the vehicle's safety, performance, and longevity. Addressing these issues promptly can help owners maintain the reliability and functionality of their vehicles.

1998 Honda Cr-v recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 1998 Honda Cr-v.

2020-01-17
  • Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 1998 Acura 2.2CL, 1998-1999 Acura 2.3CL, 1998-1999 Acura 3.0CL, 2001 Acura 3.2CL and Acura MDX, 1998-2000 Honda Accord Coupe, Accord Sedan, Civic Sedan, Odyssey and Acura 3.5RL, 1999-2000 Acura 3.2TL, 1996-2000 Civic Coupe, 1997-2000 CR-V, 1997-1998 EV Plus, and 1998-1999 Isuzu Oasis vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver frontal air bag inflator, and replace it if necessary, with an inflator of a different design, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2020. Owners may contact American Honda's Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138 or Isuzu customer service at 1-800-255-6727.
2002-05-16
  • Manufacturer: AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN SEDANS, COUPES, HATCHBACKS, AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, ELECTRICAL CONTACTS IN THE IGNITION SWITCH CAN DEGRADE DUE TO THE HIGH ELECTRICAL CURRENT PASSING THROUGH THE SWITCH WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STARTED.
  • Consequence: WORN CONTACTS COULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL WITHOUT WARNING, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JUNE 14, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009 OR ACURA AT 1-800-382-2238.
1999-10-19
  • Manufacturer: AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING:INTERIOR/UNDER DASH
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. AN IMPROPERLY ROUTED UNDER DASH WIRE HARNESS COULD BE DAMAGED BY CONTACT WITH THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A BLOWN FUSE. IF THIS OCCURS, OPERATION OF A CRITICAL COMPONENT CAN BE LOST, INCLUDING WINDSHIELD WIPERS, HEADLIGHTS, TURN SIGNAL AND HAZARD LAMPS, TAIL LAMPS, THE ANTI-LOCKING FUNCTION OF THE BRAKES, AND BATTERY CHARGING SYSTEM.
  • Consequence: A SUDDEN, UNEXPECTED LOSS OF LIGHTING OR A FAILURE OF THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS IN BAD WEATHER, COULD BE HAZARDOUS INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A 70MM PROTECTIVE, CORRUGATED PLASTIC TUBE OVER THE WIRE HARNESS, IN THE AREA OF THE BRAKE STOP SWITCH. IF ANY WIRE OR WIRES ARE DAMAGED, THEY WILL BE REPAIRED.

Negative 1998 Honda Cr-v car reviews

  1. Toby Trantow 2024-10-25

I am thrilled with this vehicle! It's my first Honda and my first SUV after having a very sporty car. It has been incredibly reliable. I've only needed to change the oil regularly and replace the tires and brakes once in the 3 years I've had it. My SUV has a manual transmission which has proven to be reliable even after 60,000 miles so far...

  2. Erick Abshire 2024-10-01

I bought my CR-V for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I was drawn to Honda's reputation for reliability, and secondly, I wanted an SUV with decent gas mileage. Unfortunately, after 3 years of ownership, I started experiencing transmission problems. I found myself spending more on maintenance than any other car I have owned. I was disappointed when the transmission started having trouble just miles after the warranty ran out. It would have been great if Honda had offered a better warranty for such a 'reliable' vehicle. However, I have decided to buy American cars from now on. At least, when they break down, I can afford to fix them or find the parts to fix them myself.

  3. Nelson Kilback 2024-08-25

Our CRV was purchased in 2004 and we have had some issues with it. However, we are confident that these issues can be resolved. We have noticed that the car revs up high when trying to speed up, but we believe that this can be fixed. The cruise control can differ by 10 mph than what you set it at, but we are confident that this can be adjusted. We have also noticed that the car has a hard time going up hills and revs up really high, but we are confident that this can be improved. We believe that the stereo can be upgraded to improve the sound quality. We have also noticed that the paint and carpet are not of the highest quality. We think there may be a slight oil problem because of a little smoke that comes out of the exhaust, but we are confident that this can be resolved. We have had some electrical issues, but we are confident that these can be fixed. Although the car is uncomfortable, especially for long trips, we believe that this can be improved. We understand that some people may have had negative experiences with Honda's, but we are confident that with the right adjustments, our CRV can be a reliable and enjoyable car.

  4. Cristobal Sporer 2024-07-13

When we bought our Honda, we were hoping for a reliable vehicle, but unfortunately, we've had some quality issues that are not typical of Honda. We've had to replace the transmission, rear suspension, and steering rack, and have experienced some minor annoyances such as the rear wiper not being very effective, noise at highway speeds, limited adjustability of the driver's seat, an awkward angle of the steering wheel, an underpowered engine, a useless center console, and poorly designed cupholders. Additionally, we had some trouble with the stereo due to the radio-code needed, which we didn't have since we bought the car used. Despite these issues, we still appreciate our Honda and hope to resolve these problems soon.

We have this CRV and we really like it. It has been very reliable and we haven't had any issues with it at all. But, of course, it is a Honda!

Your Honda sounds like a great car! It has been reliable since day 1, starts every time, and has great AWD performance. As a short person myself, I appreciate that it is very comfy and lower to the ground. Just make sure to keep up with the maintenance schedule and you should have no problems. I understand that living near the L.I. Sound means dealing with salt water daily, so it's no surprise that there is some underbelly rust on the exhaust system after 10 years. Despite its age, the car still has excellent performance. The only issue I see is that the radiator went at 170K, but that's not too bad considering the car's age and mileage.

My CRV has been a very reliable and usable vehicle. Although, I have found that getting it serviced by a reliable mechanic is much more economical than going to the dealer. The mechanic is not as inclined to replace parts that are in good condition, which has saved me money.

I've had my CR-V for almost 4 years now and it has been a great car. Other than regular oil changes, 2 tune ups and a set of tires, I have never had any problems with it. Although the 126 hp '97 & '98s could use a bigger engine, the car still performs well. Honda's reliability, comfort, build quality and everything else that makes Honda a great vehicle manufacturer, make it a great buy. With the newer model, Honda continues to produce great vehicles.

Great reliable car that is good on gas. It could use more power and pick up, and the brakes could be better.
