The Honda CR-V (also sold as the Honda Breeze in China since 2019) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Honda since 1995. Initial models of the CR-V were built using the same platform as the Civic.

Honda began producing the CR-V in Sayama, Japan, and Swindon, United Kingdom, for worldwide markets, adding North American manufacturing sites in East Liberty, Ohio, United States, in 2007; El Salto, Jalisco, Mexico, in late 2007 (ended in early 2017); Alliston, Ontario, Canada, in 2012; and Greensburg, Indiana, United States, in February 2017. The CR-V is also produced in Wuhan for the Chinese market by Dongfeng Honda, and also marketed as the Breeze in China for the version produced at Guangzhou by Guangqi Honda.

Honda states "CR-V" stands for "Comfortable Runabout Vehicle," while the term "Compact Recreational Vehicle" is used in a British car review article that was republished by Honda, associating the model name with the Sports Utility Vehicle abbreviation of SU-V.

As of 2022, the CR-V is positioned between the smaller ZR-V (marketed as HR-V in North America) – which the CR-V shares platform with – and the larger North American market Passport/Pilot or the Chinese market Avancier/UR-V. It is currently Honda's best-selling vehicle in the world, and the second best-selling SUV globally in 2020.

Common 2002 Honda Cr-v problems

The Honda CR-V, a popular SUV, has had several issues reported by owners, particularly for the 2002-2007 models. One common problem is related to the ignition system. The electrical contacts within the ignition switch may wear prematurely, leading to engine stalling. This issue affects second-generation CR-Vs and can be resolved by replacing the ignition switch.

Another problem reported is with the front seats of second-generation CR-Vs. The front seats may not have been installed correctly, with seat anchorage retaining nuts possibly not installed properly. This can lead to the seat not withstanding the force during a collision.

The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve is another component that has caused issues in second-generation CR-Vs. Reports indicate that the EGR valve may cause the engine to cut out or lose power. Ensuring that the EGR valve is functioning correctly is essential to prevent this issue.

Diesel models built between November 2009 and January 2010 may have a fuel leak issue. Fuel could leak from an injector and fuel return pipe, leading to a loss of power, illumination of warning lights, diesel fuel smell, smoke, or even a fire. This issue affects third-generation CR-Vs and should be addressed promptly to prevent further damage or safety risks.

Cruise control problems have also been reported in CR-Vs built between July 2008 and June 2010. The system may fail to disengage due to faults in the engine management software. This issue can be resolved by updating the engine management software or replacing the faulty components.

Steering problems have been reported in third-generation CR-V diesel models. Some owners have complained that the car pulls to the left and has steering wheel judder when on full lock. Excessive tyre wear is also a problem. Checking all steering components and ensuring they are in good working condition is essential to prevent this issue.

In summary, the Honda CR-V, particularly the 2002-2007 models, has had several issues reported by owners. These include ignition problems, front seat installation issues, EGR valve problems, fuel leak issues in diesel models, cruise control problems, and steering problems in diesel models. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address these issues promptly.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-08-25
  • VIN: JHLRD78862C
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON AND WHEN I RAN MY "VIN" NUMBER ON YOUR WEBSITE, I FOUND OUT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS. NEXT I TOOK MY CR-V INTO NORM REEVES HONDA IN IRVINE, CA. ON 12/9/2019 FOR MY 10:30 AM APPOINTMENT. AFTER THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG IINFLATOR RECALL PROBLEM WAS RESOLVED, I PICKED MY CR-V UP AND WENT HOME. MY CR-V HAD (115,230) MILES ON IT AT THAT POINT. MY NEXT AIR BAG PROBLEM OCCURRED ON 8/18/2020 WHEN MY CR-V HAD (116,359) MILES ON IT. NOW I HAD THE "SIDE AIR BAG OFF" LIGHT COME ON. IT WOULD COME ON AND THEN GO AWAY AND THEN COME BACK ON AGAIN EVENTUALLY. AT THAT POINT, I CALLED UP NORM REEVES HONDA IN IRVINE AGAIN TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THIS CHECKED OUT. ON 8/25/2020 AT (116,418) MILES, I DROPPED OFF MY CR-V FOR MY 10:30 AM APPOINTMENT. I HAD AN INKLING THAT THIS NEW AIR BAG LIGHT COMING ON MIGHT HAVE HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE ORIGINAL AIR BAG RECALL THAT WAS TAKEN CARE OF. AFTER THE CAR HAD BEEN CHECKED OUT, I WAS TOLD THAT ALL THE "DTC'S" WERE PULLED AND THAT THE "SIDE AIR BAG OFF LIGHT" HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ORIGINAL AIR BAG RECALL THEY TOOK CARE OF. ON MY WAY HOME, I NOTICED A NEW LIGHT HAD COME ON NOW, THE (SRS) LIGHT. IT WAS THEN THAT I IMMEDIATELY TURNED AROUND AND WENT BACK TO NORM REEVES TO INFORM THEM OF THIS.THE SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS LIGHT COMING ON AND THAT SOONER OR LATER IT WOULD HAVE COME ON, SOMEWHERE DOWN THE ROAD IN THE FUTURE. I QUESTIONED THIS AND FRANKLY HAD A DIFFICULT TIME BELIEVING THIS! THAT "SRS" LIGHT HAD NEVER COME ON BEFORE SINCE I'VE OWNED THE CAR. NOW THAT LIGHT IS ALWAYS ON 100% OF THE TIME. THE SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD ME IT'S A COMPUTER RELATED ISSUE THAT'S CAUSING THE PROBLEM AND QUOTED ME A PRICE OF APPROX. $1200 TO GET IT REPAIRED. I SAID TO HIM, "ARE YOU SERIOUS?" AND SHOOK MY HEAD IN DISGUST AS I WALKED AWAY. I THINK THEY PULLED ONE OVER ON ME. DO YOU AGREE?

Negative 2002 Honda Cr-v car reviews

  1. Cornell Ziemann 2025-01-07

Well, I recently traded in my 1994 Toyota 4Runner for this Honda. Since I bought it, I've had to replace the O2 sensor, catalytic converter, and 3rd gear throttle sensor. There's also a small oil leak and some road noise. I've noticed that the interior scratches easily. I had my Toyota for 3 years and put 108,000 miles on it without any issues. I don't think I'll be buying a Honda again.

  2. Lorenz Ritchie 2025-01-03

I have experienced several issues with my brand new car since the day of purchase. Despite my attempts to reach out to Honda Corporation through multiple phone calls and letters, I have not received satisfactory customer service. As a result, I have decided to sell the car and will not consider purchasing a Honda in the future.

  3. Mitchell Turner 2024-10-19

The car has room for improvement. Despite having the EX model with 15,000 miles on it, I get poor gas mileage no matter how I drive, only 17 mpg. Additionally, as a 6'1

  4. Jillian Barrows 2024-04-27

We had a 2002 Honda CRV that unfortunately had some mechanical issues. Despite our efforts to resolve them, we decided to part ways with the vehicle. We experienced problems with the brakes, air conditioning compressor, air bag sensor, and alternator, which were all major repairs and impacted significant safety systems. Although Honda did not agree to buy back the vehicle, they did provide some assistance with parts after some negotiation. We learned that having an extended warranty is important for future peace of mind. Additionally, the gas mileage was not as advertised and the handling in the snow was marginal. Overall, we are happy to move on from this experience.

  5. Jan Mosciski 2024-04-08

Despite having under 58,000 miles, my a/c compressor recently failed. Unfortunately, Honda will not cover the repairs since I did not purchase the extended warranty. While I was initially upset and disappointed, I reached out to the corporate office to discuss the matter. Although they confirmed that Honda would not be able to assist me, I appreciate their prompt response and willingness to engage with me on the issue. While this experience has been frustrating, I remain a loyal Honda customer and look forward to continuing my relationship with the brand.

Positive 2002 Honda Cr-v car reviews

  1. Bill Corwin 2024-11-05

I owned this car for 8 years and decided to upgrade to a Pilot. During that time, I only experienced minor issues with recalls. I regularly changed the oil and kept the tires inflated. Although the cabin noise was quite loud, especially during rain, the car's gas mileage was good. However, it was underpowered, which was disappointing. Overall, my experience with this car was positive and I am confident in my decision to upgrade to a Pilot.

  2. Lenny Witting 2024-10-11

Great vehicle! It's so well designed and has an excellent engine. I'm thrilled to say that we haven't had a single problem in the first 1000 miles. It's the perfect SUV for my wife - easy to drive and very safe.

  3. Hayden Boyer 2024-09-24

This car is a great value! It's roomy in the back and comfortable in the front, with good support for the torso on turns. Even with the moon-roof open at 70 mph, it's surprisingly quiet. The 6-cd player sounds great too. The fuel light comes on after 270-290 miles, but don't worry, there's still 4 gallons left, which is enough for about 80 miles. The fuel economy is okay, and on a 4700-mile trip, the mean fuel consumption was 26.6mpg. The rear differential did leak after 9000 miles, but it was fixed at the 10000-mile service and has been okay since then (12000+). The 4-wheel drive works great, and it's very confident driving over puddles on the highway - it pushes from the back when the front loses grip. The ABS also works well. The acceleration is good, especially at 5000-5500 rpm, and there's no feeling of underpower. It's a quiet and confident ride overall!

  4. Herman Hand 2024-09-24

I love my 2002 CR-V! If you're looking for a quieter and more comfortable ride, I highly recommend the Goodyear Assurance Comfort Tread Tires. They really live up to their name! My wife and I both noticed a significant improvement in the ride and handling.

  5. Edison Nolan 2024-08-02

I'm feeling a bit emotional at the thought of parting with my car. It has been a reliable companion for me, running like clockwork even after 100K miles. The vehicle is incredibly spacious, with plenty of room for passengers in the back seat. Although the interior is simple, it doesn't feel cheap at all. I have a 5-speed manual transmission, so the 4-cylinder engine has never been an issue for me, and I still manage to get low to mid 20s MPG despite the AWD. This car is truly one of the best used car values you'll ever come across.
