The fifth-generation Honda CR-V is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Honda since 2016, replacing the fourth-generation CR-V. It was first unveiled on 13 October 2016 in Detroit, United States. Honda began producing the CR-V at East Liberty, Ohio at the East Liberty Auto Plant in November 2016 and at Greensburg, Indiana at the Honda Manufacturing of Indiana plant during February 2017. The fifth-generation of CR-V is available in 5-seater and 7-seater variant in markets other than North America.

Markets

Sales began in the U.S. on 21 December 2016 as a 2017 model year. While most North American market cars are made in the ELAP, HMIN or HCM plants, some, albeit relatively very few, are assembled in Saitama, Japan.

The fifth generation CR-V was also launched in Thailand on 24 March 2017 and in Indonesia on 27 April 2017 at the 25th Indonesia International Motor Show. Indonesian models went on sale on 17 June 2017. The Indonesian model top trim (Prestige) is equipped with 5-spoke 18-inch Modulo alloy wheels not seen in other markets.

In the Philippines, the 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel engine manages 120 PS and 300 Nm of torque.

The 158 kW (212 hp; 215 PS) CR-V Hybrid was unveiled at the 2017 Auto Shanghai in China in April 2017.

On 12 July 2017, Honda Malaysia launched the fifth generation CR-V with four trim levels. After two years, Honda Malaysia launched the CR-V Mugen Limited Edition.

The fifth generation CR-V was also launched in Japan on 30 August 2018 and went on sale on the following day, making it the return of the CR-V for the Japanese domestic market after a two-year hiatus since the fourth generation CR-V was discontinued there in August 2016. It was previously displayed on 27 October 2017 at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, announced on 29 September 2017.

The European market CR-V was shown at Geneva Motor Show in March 2018 and went on sale in September, including a seven-seat variant. The CR-V hybrid, which was previewed at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, went on sale in early 2019 with a fuel economy comparable to diesel competitors. Honda expects sales to split equally between gasoline and hybrid in three years.

The mechanic informed me he has seen this in many hybrids. My nephew who is s lead mechanic for Kia informed me he has replaced a few in Kia hybrids. Further investigation revealed Honda recalling a half million hybrids in Japan for the same issue. No recall for Europe or America for this issue and Honda has no intention of covering this. If the manufacturer of this part is the same for many Japanese makers and this issue appears across the board, why hasn’t a recall or proper fix been established?

LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-21
  • VIN: 2HKRW2H88MH
  • Components: LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The car's forward collision warning system is defective. The car will randomly bring up "BRAKE" on the dashboard with nothing even close to the car. This has started happening many times over the past few weeks, with even at least one instance of the car braking on its own. I brought this up to the dealership during my last oil change recently, and they inspected and looked into it. They said there was nothing wrong with the sensors/system and they documented it (specifically saying no problem found vehicle is operating normally at this time). However, a day or two after the dealership, the problem returned and it continues to persist. In addition to this, the blind spot warning system also randomly goes off when nothing is nearby, but not as often as the braking system, which is more dangerous in my opinion.

  • Summary: 1 weeks ago the crv over heated once, shut the car off gave it 5min turned it back on and got it home no further issue, never over heated again Then on Monday the check engine light started flashing took to a shop they said it was due to spark plugs and ignition coils. The very next day flashed again, took back to shop they said it was my head gasket, took to a second shop and they confirmed that it was a head gasket but most likely needed the entire engine replaced at over $17,0000 The car is only 3 years old with 145k miles and already needs a new engine.

It also happened a couple of times when turning a curve or exiiting, also without any car in front of me. The only thing I could notice was the dashboard flashing but I could not read it because I had to focus on the road.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-16
  • VIN: 2HKRW1H85MH
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: My vehicle (2021 Honda CRV EX-L, 47,000 miles) is currently out of factory warranty. However, issue with the steering rack has caused issues with sound and sticky steering. This is a known issue with this specific model. Honda diagnosed an issue with my vehicle as being power steering rack being faulty. A manufacture defect they added. This was after replacing a axle they suspected turned out it was not the issue. They will not honor a full replacement of this faulty part. At the moment after going back and worth, they are agreeing to take care of half the repair amount which we feel is unacceptable knowing that this issue is a manufacture defect. We are aware of a current investigation with the NHTSA that's looking into this matter but we wanted to reach out and ask if Honda should be liable for the cost of the repairs regardless of the warranty expired. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-06
  • VIN: 7FART6H86ME
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: The battery voltage of the car goes down to 2 bars, the the check engine light comes on. Sometimes the car/engine shakes and the loses power and won’t accelerate anymore. This happens even if the car is already on the road going up to 70 mph. We took it to the Honda service center and they spent 3 hours on it, but couldn’t find the issue. This is not safe, very scary when it happens and has been happening every few days. This could cause an accident especially when it just loses power and we have to pull over to shut off engine to restart to get battery power again.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-01
  • VIN: 7FARW1H80ME
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: My car began making a popping noise when I would make a slight left turn and began to straighten back out. It would also have a slight tug on the steering wheel when the popping noise would happen. It started out random and got worse and more frequent as time went on. I do feel like it was a safety concern because of the tug in the steering. I took my car to the dealership and they confirmed that it was the power steering rack and that they had had some problems with the manufacturer they were using and that the new manufacturer they were using had the part on back order. They just called me two weeks ago and replaced it on August 22nd. Since it has been replaced the steering issue and noise has not occurred again. The vehicle did not ever give me any warning indicators.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-29
  • VIN: 5J6RW2H5XML
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I was driving on the middle lane of a major highway, going around 70 mph, when a plastic grocery bag floated in front of the car, at a height of about two feet off of the ground. My vehicle suddenly slammed on the brakes. It slammed hard and I could not make it stop. I tried to push the brake but it was already down. I was nearly rear-ended and could have easily caused a multiple car accident. I may have been using the cruise-control at the time, but I'm not sure. I do not recall if the vehicle flashed an orange "BRAKE" warning. I did not take the vehicle to a dealer to try to recreate the problem.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-01
  • VIN: 2HKRW2H85MH
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: COMPONENT IS THE POWER STEERING RACK. THE STEERING BECAME HARD TO STEER AND SEEMED TO STICK WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AS THE STEERING FAILS TO RESPONE AS EXPECTED WHEN YOU ARE TURNING THE WHEEL. DEALER HAS CONFIRMED THE PROBLEM AND WHEN I CONTACTED HONDA THEY VERIFIED THAT THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS OR ANY OTHER MESSAGES FOR THIS PROBLEM. WHEN THE MANUFACTURE WAS UNABLE TO SUPPLY A REPLACEMENT PART DUE TO BACKORDER THE DEALER PROCURED THE PART FROM ANOTHER DEALER. AFTER THIS PART WAS INSTALLED I EXPERIANCE A GROULING NOISE WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL AND QUICKLY EXPERIANCED THE SAME STICKING WHILE TURNING THE WHEEL. THE DEALER IS STILL WAITING FOR ANOTHER REPLACEMENT FROM THE MANUFACTURE.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-13
  • VIN: 7FART6H95ME
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: This is the second time this vehicle has randomly lost power / internal combustion engine stalled while driving on the interstate. Vehicle was traveling approximately 70mph steady for 10 minutes when the incident occurred. The combustion engine began to shutter and stalled, check engine light began blinking. Hybrid battery went down to zero and had to make an emergency departure off the highway with no power. Vehicle had to be powered off and powered back on to resume normal operation. Because the CELlight cleared the dealership cannot look up the fault and mark it as NPF. When I search this issue, it seems to be fairly common with the 2020+ honda hybrids (crv and accords). This type of power train failure / stall is extremely dangerous especially on highways with little or no warning and time to react. We are begging the NHTSA to have Honda do a through investigation and recall to remediate the engine stall failures on these hybrid vehicles ASAP as this is extremely dangerous for our family and other drivers around us.

The dealer said the unit needs to be replaced and the car is not safe to drive. There are no parts available and the car has been at the dealership for two months. If it involves a manufacture defect, why has there been no recall by Honda.

Negative 2021 Honda Cr-v hybrid car reviews

  1. Justen Beahan 2024-09-20

I have consistently achieved a fuel efficiency of 32 mpg, despite not driving aggressively, since purchasing this vehicle brand new. Additionally, I experienced a minor issue with the rear main seal at 13k, which was promptly resolved. Overall, I am confident in the quality and performance of this vehicle and look forward to future use.

  2. Dean Pouros 2024-09-17

I purchased this car with the expectation of being able to add a bike rack, which I made clear to the salesperson. However, upon returning to the dealership to install the hitch, I was informed that the hybrid model cannot have a hitch installed due to American Honda Motors' liability concerns. While it is available on the European model, I was advised to go to UHaul for installation, which may potentially void the warranty. As a result, I have decided to part ways with Honda. Although the car is comfortable and has a nice interior, it does not have the same level of versatility as other cars in its category. I am now looking to trade it in for a RAV or Forester that better suits my needs.

  3. Dion Harvey 2024-09-05

I recently purchased a 2021 CR V Hybrid Touring and while I was hoping for the usual Honda quality and craftsmanship, I was a bit disappointed. While the exterior design is good, I do think a redesign may be on the horizon. The interior has a lot of plastic and lacks any luxury features. The engine power is decent, but it's definitely more of a hybrid vehicle. I did notice some areas of poor craftsmanship in certain parts of the vehicle. However, I do think the competition, such as the RAV 4, has a strong presence in the crossover hybrid segment. Toyota seems to have really perfected the US hybrid market. Overall, I think there is room for improvement with the CR V Hybrid Touring, but it's still a solid choice for those looking for a hybrid crossover.

  4. Roosevelt Rohan 2024-08-10

It's important to keep in mind that the car's specifications may not accurately reflect its fuel efficiency. In my experience, I was unable to achieve more than 33 mpg in the city, even when driving well below the speed limit. If you're in the market for a hybrid car, there are many other options available that may better suit your needs, such as Toyota, Ford, Kia, Hyundai, and German cars. It's worth considering all of your options before making a decision. It's also worth noting that I and some other drivers are currently exploring legal options regarding our experiences with Honda, but this is a personal decision and may not be relevant to everyone's situation.

  5. Alexander Wolf 2024-07-23

If you're looking for a hybrid SUV, it's important to do your research. While Edmunds may not recommend the CRV Hybrid, it's worth considering all options before making a decision. I recently purchased one and found it to be a bit underwhelming, especially in higher elevations. However, it's important to note that everyone's experience may differ. In comparison to the Rav 4 Hybrid, the CRV Hybrid's engine may not be as powerful. I am currently considering returning it to the Honda dealership, but I encourage others to test drive it for themselves and make their own informed decision.

Positive 2021 Honda Cr-v hybrid car reviews

  1. Efren Moen 2025-01-08

This is a really nice car! It rides and handles so well, and the cabin is both classy and convenient. Plus, it has lots of cool and useful features. Unlike the RAV-4, the interior materials don't feel cheap at all. The engine is also super quiet and barely audible, and there's not much road noise to speak of. The only thing I'm not thrilled about is that I'm only getting 34 miles per gallon with mixed conservative driving. But overall, I'm much happier driving this car than the plastic-feeling RAV-4!

  2. Gideon Brakus 2024-09-23

I love my CRV! However, I do wish car manufacturers would offer more color options. Black is not my favorite color as it tends to get dirty easily and can be difficult to spot in a crowded parking lot or on the highway at night. I even had to purchase bumper and window stickers to help me locate it in the grocery store parking lot. It would be great to see more variety in car colors, as there are so many beautiful options available. Despite this, I must say that the lane correction, backup camera, and blind spot protection features are incredibly helpful in today's traffic and high-speed highway driving. The AC works well, the seats adjust easily, and the back seats fold down for extra cargo space. Additionally, the push-button rear hatch lift is a convenient feature, and the AWD is a lifesaver in the winter.

Saves cost in gas, has a beautiful interior, is hybrid, and spacious.

The new owner is generally satisfied. However, the side windows have a coating that distorts color and creates an oily rainbow effect.

Hi there! I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new Honda CRV! As someone who has owned three of them, it's clear that you're a fan. The touring-hybrid model sounds like a great choice, especially with all of those amazing features like the hands-free tailgate, heated steering wheel, and cordless charging area. And let's not forget about the savings on gas - that's always a plus! It's great to hear that you're getting such good gas mileage, even if it's a bit lower in the winter. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!
