Common 1991 Chevrolet Blazer problems

The 1991 Chevrolet Blazer is known to have several common problems, mainly related to the engine and transmission.

One of the most common problems is a rough idle and occasional engine cutting out, which can be caused by a variety of issues. One user on a Blazer forum reported this problem, stating that they had fought rough idle and occasional engine cutting out for some time, with the problem seeming to come and go. The user had replaced the O2 sensor, but the problem persisted. They had also tuned up the truck, including replacing plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, and fuel pump. Despite these efforts, the truck still idled roughly and would cut out and backfire through the intake at highway speeds. The check engine light would come on after cruising at highway speed, but would always reset when the ignition turned off. Mechanics were unable to find anything wrong, and the user was unsure whether the issue could be related to the EGR solenoid.

Another common problem with the 1991 Chevrolet Blazer is transmission issues. Users have reported having to give a lot of throttle to get the vehicle moving, as if trying to start in a higher gear on a manual transmission. Once the vehicle is moving, it may not shift into second gear until very high RPM, and the shifts may be hard. This problem can be caused by low transmission fluid or a faulty transmission, as was the case for one user who reported that topping off the transmission fluid and replacing the filter did not solve the problem. The user eventually decided to sell the vehicle as-is due to the high cost of replacing the transmission in a vehicle with high mileage.

Another user reported experiencing an intermittent problem where the vehicle would not run well first thing in the morning and might not start again for a day or so. This problem was suspected to be caused by a bad fuel pump, as low fuel pressure can cause similar symptoms.

In addition to these common problems, the 1991 Chevrolet Blazer can also experience stalling issues, particularly on short trips. This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including a dirty or worn-out idle air control valve or a malfunctioning MAP sensor. The MAP sensor can be particularly problematic in vehicles that have been moved to a different altitude, as the sensor may detect changes in barometric pressure and become confused. This can cause the engine to stall, particularly during warm-up.

In summary, the 1991 Chevrolet Blazer is known to have several common problems, including rough idle, engine cutting out, transmission issues, intermittent starting problems, and stalling. These problems can be caused by a variety of issues, including faulty sensors, low fluid levels, and worn-out parts. While some of these problems can be solved with relatively simple fixes, others may require more extensive repairs or replacement of major components.

I bought my Blazer back in March 2007 when it already had 160k miles on it. I must say, I still absolutely adore this truck! It has proven to be incredibly reliable, so much so that I even let my pregnant wife drive it all by herself on a 2,400 mile journey without a single worry. The gas mileage is pretty decent too, averaging around 17 on the highway and 12 in town, which is not bad at all for a truck of its age. Now, with 190k miles on it, I still find every excuse I can to take it out for a spin. It still runs like a dream and can even lay down some rubber! Trust me, if you decide to buy one, you won't be disappointed!

I've been driving my K-5 for a decade now and I'm finally considering finding a replacement, although it hasn't been an easy task. Along the way, I've had some issues - I had to replace the rear end in '98, a new torque converter in '99, and the alternator caught fire in '97 - but overall, it's been a fantastic vehicle. They just don't make them like they used to. The dashboard is made of metal and vinyl, not all plastic like modern trucks. GM really needs to reconsider their interior design for new models. If I had the funds, I would seriously consider restoring it, but here in salt country (Central New York), it's impossible to keep the body going forever.

  3. Darrick Dickinson 2024-08-02

This Blazer has been such a great car for us! We purchased it with only 33,000 miles on it and we still absolutely love it. It has been incredibly reliable and the build quality has held up well, even on the dirt roads where we live. The 5.7 L 350 V8 is amazingly quiet, smooth, and powerful. At under 10,000, the Blazer is a great value even in today's market. I would definitely recommend this vehicle to anyone. It's a shame that Chevrolet doesn't make these Blazers anymore!

  4. Arvel Lockman 2024-05-04

I still drive this vehicle daily and have been doing so for 5 years. When I first bought it, it had 88K on it and I didn't experience any problems until it hit 135k. However, despite these issues, I still love this vehicle. It has taken me on many trips without any problems, including North Carolina, South Carolina, Missouri, and Gettysburg. It rides and handles like a dream. I bought it for $5,500 in 97 and it has been worth every penny.
