Hyundai Sonata 2016 problems
The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.
The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.
First generation (Y1; 1985)
The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.
Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.
It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.
The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

Common Hyundai Sonata 2016 problems
The 2016 Hyundai Sonata has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine, transmission, and interior components.
- Transmission Shuddering: Transmission shuddering while accelerating has been reported as another common problem in the 2016 Hyundai Sonata. This issue occurs when the vehicle slips into neutral while stopped and hesitates to get into gear while accelerating.
- Cracked Dashboards: Although less common, cracked dashboards have been noted in the 2016 Hyundai Sonata, particularly in hotter climates where the dash expands in direct sunlight.
- Recalls: The 2016 Hyundai Sonata has six recalls, more than the average for a car of its age. These recalls include the ABS warning lamp, airbags, sunroof, parking brake indicator, and turn signal activating in the wrong direction. The most serious recalls involve airbags, as they can increase the risk of injury in the event of an accident.
- Faulty Speakers: Some 2011-2016 Hyundai Sonatas have been reported to have defective speakers, requiring a hard reset to fix a software glitch.
- Seatbelt Linkage: Hyundai recalled certain 2016 Sonata models due to a seatbelt linkage that was not properly connected to the pretensioner. This issue could increase the risk of injury during a collision or other road accidents.
- Faulty Speed Sensor: Many owners of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata had problems shifting gears due to a faulty speed sensor, causing their vehicles to grind, shudder, and produce clunking noises when shifting from park to drive.
These problems can impact the overall reliability and safety of the 2016 Hyundai Sonata. It is essential for owners to address these issues promptly to ensure the vehicle's longevity and prevent potential accidents.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-20

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-24
- VIN: 5NPE24AF3GH
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: My car experiences issues around acceleration. It often feels like it gets “stuck” or hesitates when I try to accelerate from a stop (ex. a stoplight) or low speed or when I try to merge onto the highway. At times I have not been able to merge onto the highway at a safe speed because my acceleration gets stuck/lags at a low mph (ex. 35 mph onto a 70 mph highway). My car also excessively consumes oil. I started noticing the excessive oil consumption around 115K miles. My oil lamp does not illuminate when low on oil in nearly all cases I have been low on oil. It has only come on once (did not remain on) and oil was not present on the dipstick. I am 687 miles into my current 1,000-mile oil consumption test and have had to top off my oil twice. I started the test because my oil light flashed and oil was not present on the dipstick. The engine light came on 312 miles into the consumption test. I got a diagnostic code from AutoZone and relayed the diagnostic code to the dealership. The dealership said the code was related to low oil and to fill up with oil and bring the car to the dealership. I filled it with oil and drove the car to Luke’s Auto for an independent inspection. Their inspection found that the check engine light was from a failed e-cvvt and additional wear was present. I asked if this could be caused by oil consumption issues and they confirmed the possibility. Just over 300 miles from that incident, I checked my oil and it was once again low. I am deeply concerned about the safety of my vehicle due to it's stalling and indicators of potentially seizing. I have had near collisions on the highway due to my vehicle getting "stuck" while accelerating and unable to enter the highway at a safe speed. I am concerned about the consequences of lack of oil and failure of my oil lamp to illuminate to indicate no oil such as my engine seizing or catching fire. I have reported these concerns to the dealership since 1/2/23 and have reported my concerns to HMA.

- Summary: My 2016 Hyundai Sonata (pearl white) paint is peeling in many parts of my car. I went to Delray Hyundai where I purchased it in 2019. In August of 2023 I showed a supervisor and she set up an appointment for me to bring in the car for pictures. After Delray Hyundai took pictures I waited and waited to hear from them. I went to the dealership and spoke to the supervisor I was dealing with and she keep giving me excuses why they couldn't do it at that time, she keep telling me they didn't have a loaner car for me, to call or come back. I was frustrated but felt like they were going to take care of the problem. Her name was Piper. Finally after many months I was told they wouldn't do anything for me, and I was told by a worker to try Coconut Creek dealer because they have a paint dept. Well I'm [XXX] old and by myself and I cannot get there. It's very far away and I would have to travel [XXX]. I asked if they would bring the car there for me and was told no. I called Coconut Creek Hyundai and they told me no they couldn't help me. I love my Car and always got compliments on it but it's peeling so bad that it looks awful and I would never get the true value if I traded it in because of the failed paint. I have read and seen pictures of many other people on the internet that have the same problem. Can you please help me. Now it's more than the one side the other side of the car is peeling Thanks INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-20
- VIN: 5NPE24AF5GH
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My car currently has 93000 miles. Since I’ve had 76000 miles, I cannot make it to an oil change without my engine almost running out of oil. My maintenance is always done on time, especially considering I can’t even drive 3000 miles (out of my 5000 mile synthetic oil change life) without my oil light coming on and oil below dipstick. I have taken the car in multiple times, performed multiple engine oil consumption tests and even though my engine is burning a whole quart of oil every 1000 miles, they refuse to replace my engine. I even have an extended warranty through Hyundai so I don’t understand why a defective engine under warranty that literally can’t even drive a whole oil change cycle without running out of oil wouldn’t be replaced by the factory. Please help I’m afraid to take long trips because what if the engine runs out of oil?
ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-10
- VIN: 5NPE34AF2GH
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: We were told from Tulsa Hyundai that our car was involved in a massive recall due to engine failure and that the warranty had been extended to 150,000 miles on Theta engines. They told us we had to follow the process in order to have a claim submitted to Hyundai corporate. They required us to pay for a valve gasket replacement and a valve cover gasket ($1000), then to take the car home and drive for 1000 miles and then bring it back in. We brought it back in and were required to pay for a combustion cleaning (around $800) and then take it home and drive it for 1000 miles. We brought it back in and they performed the oil consumption test. They then submitted the claim to Hyundai and we heard back the next day (9/18/2024) that they were denying they claim due to it being an issue with piston rings instead of rod bearing failure. I called Hyundai and they basically said there was nothing else they would do. They told us we could be reimbursed for the $1800 we had to spend to go through that process. Those fees were incurred were not necessary, especially when Hyundai is not going to replace the engine. Hyundai markets on their dealer websites, "engines for life", yet they will do nothing to replace our engine that is in failure.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

- Summary: While on the highway vehicle started shaking violently, flashing engine light then service hybrid system along with every light on the dash! Car still running poorly, stiff steering very hard to slow down to get to safety! By the time I was able to pull over the engine was knocking and a burning smell was coming from the engine compartment. I popped the hood shut the car off , the exhaust manifold and converter(in one together) was so hot it was glowing! I’m thankful I was able to get to safety without it catching fire because it was on its way there! I called for a tow and sent it to the dealer where Hyundai is replacing the engine.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-17
- VIN: 5NPE24AF6GH
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My Sonata has had continuous oil consumption issues. It is now at the dealership for service. They want to do repairs that may not work, to avoid replacing an engine that is under an Oil Consumption Recall. My car had an oil consumption test. At the time the dealership said it passed, this was a couple years ago. It now has the oil issues. The recall extends my warranty to 15 years/150,000 miles. If I have the repairs and they fail, the engine could seize up while I am driving it.

- Summary: The paint on my 2016 Hyundai continues to peel. I have gone to get the vehicle repainted to no avail. The roof paint came off again and even bigger than the original peel. This is absolutely ridiculous, I see my extract same car on the road with the extract same problems. Not to mention the oil consumption. Across the board these vehicles have all the same issues. No one should have to keep paying out of pocket for a manufacturing issue and no wrong doing of their own. This is Hyundai’s wrong doing and they need to be held accountable for manufacturing such a cheap car. At some point all of my paint is going to come off, I should not have to pay yet for another repainting. I will continue to file complaints, and escalate even further if needed. Someone needs to call me back with a solution regarding this matter.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-07
- VIN: 5NPE24AF6GH
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Intermittent loss of steering with my Hyundai Sonata 2016 since April 2024. Vehicle randomly loses power steering while turning and 2 warning lights appear (power steering light (eps)and traction control). This has put me and my passengers at risk several times- almost crashing into other cars and objects. I went to the mechanics two times- they have recalibrated steering angle and reset codes, but the problem continues, and I lose power steering intermittently. This is a very big safety risk and I am afraid to continue driving my car.

Currently the "seat belt" light remains on when there is no one in the front passenger seat. The "air bag" light on the dash remains on while the Sonata is in use. Based on what I have read, the safety concern is that the air bags may not deploy or certain air bags may deploy at unexpected times.

- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I'm making a complaint on my 2016 Hyundai Sonata’s engine. The problem started in February 2023 with the valve cover gasket leaking, the mileage was around 98,000 miles. Then, 2 months later, the oil pan was leaking. The vehicle was still losing oil. They can not find where the oil went to. Took the car to the dealer to do an oil pressure. Before the oil pressure, oil levels were down 1 ⅔ quart low. Drove the vehicle for 1,000 miles and checked and the oil was down ¾ quart low, which was in range according to Hydundia. Checking the oil level every 1,000 miles and the oil level were about 1 quart oil low. Since last year, checking the oil level every 1,000 miles until this month the oil level was 3 quarts low at 1,000 miles. This engine should be recalled, which I had found out several different ones I came across are having the same problem.

- VIN: 5NPE24AF9GH
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Hello, My name is [XXX], hopefully this peaks your interest. i have been thru and thru with hyundai about this oil consumption and to be honest i have had it with this terrible company. unwilling to take responsibility for faulty engine issues in millions of individuals with the hyundai brand. Seems to me like this brand is all for profit and not for the customers. I should not have to pay for a combustion cleaning, multiple oil consumption test that are destroying my engine further in HOPES that they will replace my engine out of “goodwill” with no guarantee. This issue should definitely be added to the other recall vehicles that are listed for oil consumption problems, yet isn’t. there’s no reason my car should be burning through 5 quarts of oil in less than a week, this is obviously a manufacture issue and to be told the problem was a cracked oil pan that i paid $700 to fix at the dealership just to find out, that was not the issue, my car was not diagnosed correctly and i was charged for this oil pan replacement for absolutely no reason being that my vehicle is still CONSUMING oil, not leaking oil. i have checked for oil leaks myself, that is not the issue. my engine is consuming oil at a very rapid rate in the event i drive my car more than the 15 miles i drive to work and back, one errand run and 5 days of driving back and forth to work SHOULD NOT be using that much oil. my engine is getting hot from a 15 mile drive to work and i SHOULD NOT have to damage my engine further if hyundai can not even promise me a replacement in the event my engine burns up. No kind of loaner car available. This is just a terrible company all around and i’m ready to just switch to a different vehicle brand as this company obviously does not take responsibility for the issues that millions of individuals are having at this very moment. i spoke to a case manager and she Tells me i will receive an engine replacement if my oil combustion cleaning fails, when i asked for that in INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

In these vehicles, the driver's frontal air bag may be missing a chemical enhancer required for the second stage air bag deployment, resulting in the second stage not deploying in certain crashes. The primary stage will deploy as intended.
- Consequence: An air bag that does not inflate increases the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag module, free of charge. The recall began on May 5,2016. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 144.

I paid extra for the navigation package, but unfortunately it did not meet my expectations. My phone's Google Maps is faster at both looking up an address and recalculating when directions change. Additionally, the voice recognition feature has trouble understanding commands in normal road conditions, and it is even worse with a window down or the sunroof open. Overall, I was disappointed with the performance of the navigation package given the amount of money I spent on it.

This has been a fantastic experience with the Hyundai Sonata Limited, and I'm excited for the next one in three years!

I recently upgraded to a 2016 Sonata after driving a 2002 Chevy Malibu for years. I absolutely love my car! The exterior is sharp and professional, while the interior is spacious and comfortable. A top priority for me when choosing a car is strong road holding, and the Sonata nails this. I feel safe and comfortable when driving the car, and it really sticks to the road. The speakers are exceptional for a base model vehicle, and the Bluetooth feature is a nice addition. The Sonata also has great gas mileage. I use premium gas, and one tank can last me 2-3 weeks (although I don't drive every day). There is only one noticeable con: the car is made for a larger person. As a relatively short person, it can be hard to parallel park, as I cannot see in front of or behind the car very well. However, a back-up camera or beeper would fix this problem. Unfortunately, I have the base model, which does not include that feature. Overall, I would absolutely buy this car again (with back-up assistance), and will consider getting another one when the time comes. However, Hyundai is known for their long-lasting cars, so I hope to get many years of use out of my Sonata.

The Sonata is comfortable, fun to drive, and a great value!

Everything is great so far! However, the only downside is the low ground clearance on the front end.

I recently bought a 2016 Hyundai Sonata for my daughter, but unfortunately, we had to take it in for a recall due to a possible engine failure. During a 6-hour trip, the engine failed and my daughter had to spend 3 days in Pocatello, ID while the car was repaired at her own expense. We found out that they don't replace the bad engine, but instead do a work around. This has left us concerned about the reliability of the car and we are hesitant to take any trips longer than an hour or two away from home. It's been a frustrating experience, but we are hopeful that the car will continue to function properly.

I returned to the dealer the next morning after discovering a paperwork error that overlooked applying the Hyundai BOOSTUP savings program to my purchase. BOOSTUP is a savings matching program found on the Hyundai website. Although I have received my original $500 deposit through my dealer, I have not yet received the Hyundai matching amount, even after 8 months! The Sales Manager said that things take a long time to be resolved with Hyundai, which was confirmed by the BOOSTUP customer service rep. The Williamsburg, VA dealer has resubmitted document requests several times to Hyundai, as have I, but neither of us have received a satisfactory conclusion to our request to have the matching BOOSTUP processed. Despite this, I am confident that Hyundai will resolve this issue soon. My overall experience with the Sonata has been great, and I believe it is a good value. However, I would like to see Hyundai improve their customer support. I rate Hyundai four stars. Update June 2017: After involving the local franchise owner directly, an empowered Hyundai rep got involved and I finally received my BoostUp. Update December 2018: The Sonata is an excellent vehicle and I am still very happy with its performance. I also own a Kia, a sister company, and although I had to fight for 4 months to get satisfactory results with a headlight problem, I believe that these organizations will effectively respond to problems.

I am writing this review in February 2021 for my 2016 Hyundai Sonata with 30,000 miles. I have always followed the maintenance schedule in the manual, using synthetic/premium oil and changing the filter every 4,000-5,000 miles at least twice a year. I have also changed the engine filter and completed all other recommended inspections. Unfortunately, at 29,300 miles, the engine light came on (just after the 5-year warranty expired!). I got it fixed, thinking it was just a defective part that failed too soon. However, at 29,800 miles, the engine light came on again, and by this point, I had spent over $2,000 on repairs at the Hyundai dealership/service center near me. It's important to note that these repairs were not due to regular wear and tear, but rather defective/cheap parts and poor design. I previously owned a 2012 Nissan Altima, which I maintained well and sold with over 150,000 miles on it. I never had any issues with it, and the engine light never came on. I only needed to do regular maintenance like changing the brakes, tires, or battery. Overall, I would not recommend buying a Hyundai. While it may seem like a better deal than Nissan, Honda, or Toyota, don't be fooled! Sonata's and possibly other Hyundai's are highly unreliable, and the engine makes too much noise with sluggish performance for the advertised horsepower. The quality is very poor.

If you're considering the Camry, the Sonata should definitely be on your test drive list! It's a fantastic, feature-packed car that's comfortable and great for daily driving. With different configurations and add-on packages, you can get exactly what you want without having to pay for things you don't need. My favourite feature on the Sport version are the seats. They have a sports fabric down the middle with leather side bolsters, and you still get the heated seat feature. The Sonata Sport and the Chrysler 200S are the only mid-size sedans that offer this combination. I really tried to convince myself to get this car; it had everything on my checklist for a fantastic price. However, the interior felt bland, plastic, and soulless to me, and I just couldn't see myself being happy driving it every day. In the end, I purchased the 2016 Kia Optima EX with the premium package instead - I liked the sportier exterior and interior styling much better.
