The fifth-generation Honda CR-V is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Honda since 2016, replacing the fourth-generation CR-V. It was first unveiled on 13 October 2016 in Detroit, United States. Honda began producing the CR-V at East Liberty, Ohio at the East Liberty Auto Plant in November 2016 and at Greensburg, Indiana at the Honda Manufacturing of Indiana plant during February 2017. The fifth-generation of CR-V is available in 5-seater and 7-seater variant in markets other than North America.

Markets

Sales began in the U.S. on 21 December 2016 as a 2017 model year. While most North American market cars are made in the ELAP, HMIN or HCM plants, some, albeit relatively very few, are assembled in Saitama, Japan.

The fifth generation CR-V was also launched in Thailand on 24 March 2017 and in Indonesia on 27 April 2017 at the 25th Indonesia International Motor Show. Indonesian models went on sale on 17 June 2017. The Indonesian model top trim (Prestige) is equipped with 5-spoke 18-inch Modulo alloy wheels not seen in other markets.

In the Philippines, the 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel engine manages 120 PS and 300 Nm of torque.

The 158 kW (212 hp; 215 PS) CR-V Hybrid was unveiled at the 2017 Auto Shanghai in China in April 2017.

On 12 July 2017, Honda Malaysia launched the fifth generation CR-V with four trim levels. After two years, Honda Malaysia launched the CR-V Mugen Limited Edition.

The fifth generation CR-V was also launched in Japan on 30 August 2018 and went on sale on the following day, making it the return of the CR-V for the Japanese domestic market after a two-year hiatus since the fourth generation CR-V was discontinued there in August 2016. It was previously displayed on 27 October 2017 at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, announced on 29 September 2017.

The European market CR-V was shown at Geneva Motor Show in March 2018 and went on sale in September, including a seven-seat variant. The CR-V hybrid, which was previewed at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, went on sale in early 2019 with a fuel economy comparable to diesel competitors. Honda expects sales to split equally between gasoline and hybrid in three years.

Common Honda Cr-v hybrid problems

Common Problems with Honda CR-V Hybrid Cars:

  • Airbag Malfunction: The absorption of moisture into the driver’s airbag propellant could lead to slow deployment or inflator rupture. This issue could affect the safety of the vehicle, and it is essential to have it checked and resolved promptly.
  • Whirly Sound During Backup: Some owners of the 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid have reported a weird whirly sound during backup, which can be concerning and may require further investigation to resolve.
  • Lack of Ventilated Front Seats: The 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid does not have ventilated front seats, which can be a problem for some drivers, especially during hot weather. This feature is available in some competitors' vehicles, such as the Toyota RAV4.
  • No Spare Tire: The 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid does not come with a spare tire, which can be a problem if a tire gets punctured or damaged. Instead, it comes with an emergency tire kit to patch up a hole in the tire, but some drivers may find this solution inconvenient or inadequate.
  • Poorly Designed Wireless Phone Charger: Some owners of the 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid have reported that the wireless phone charger is poorly designed and that their phones slide off the charging pad during sharp turns. This issue can be frustrating and may require a modification or replacement of the charger.
  • Lack of Audio Source Button on Steering Wheel: The 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid does not have an audio source button on the steering wheel, which can make it more difficult to switch between different audio sources while driving. This issue can be inconvenient and may require the driver to touch the main display to change the audio.
  • Inaccurate Speed Limit Display: Some owners of the 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid have reported that the speed limit display on the dashboard is inaccurate and may display the wrong number. This issue can be dangerous and may require further investigation to resolve.
  • Blind Spot Warning Issues: Some owners of the 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid have reported that the blind spot warning beeps for no reason or beeps for cars that are not in the driver's blind spot. This issue can be distracting and may require further investigation to resolve.
  • Headlight Switch Cannot Stay on "Off" Position: The headlight switch on the 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid cannot stay on the "off" position and always goes back to the "auto" position. This issue can be frustrating and may require further investigation to resolve.
  • Inconsistent Fuel Recommendation: The owner's manual of the 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid recommends different fuel types, which can be confusing for drivers. Honda has clarified that premium fuel is recommended, but regular fuel is also acceptable. This inconsistency can be confusing and may require further clarification.

It is essential to note that not all 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid owners will experience these problems, and some may not experience any issues at all. However, it is crucial to be aware of these common problems and to address them promptly if they occur to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the vehicle.

What are the problems with a Honda CRV hybrid?

Documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have uncovered a significant issue concerning the Honda CRV Hybrid's 12-volt battery cables. These cables, which are routed outside the body frame, may lack a crucial fuse on the power circuit due to manufacturing error.

How long will CR-V Hybrid battery last?

A hybrid battery will typically last at least 8 years or up to 100,000 miles since US manufacturers are required to warranty them for that long by law. But some experts, like Auto Trader, say that these batteries often last 10 to 15 years or around 120,000 to 150,000 miles.

Is the 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid predicted reliability?

We expect the 2024 CR-V Hybrid will have about average reliability when compared to the average new car. This prediction is based on data from 2023 models.

How many miles can a CR-V Hybrid go on a full tank?

The 2023 CR-V has a 602-mile driving range in ideal driving conditions. A combination of a filled-up gas tank size of 14 gallons and 43 city mpg on the 2WD Sport Hybrid can give you an incredible driving range of over 600 miles.

The very next day, it did it again. This is extremely dangerous and can cause an accident if someone is driving behind me and the car suddenly decides to stop on its own.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-07
  • VIN: 2HKRW2H88MH
  • Components: LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The car's forward collision warning system is defective. The car will randomly bring up "BRAKE" on the dashboard with nothing even close to the car. This has started happening many times over the past few weeks, with even at least one instance of the car braking on its own. I brought this up to the dealership during my last oil change recently, and they inspected and looked into it. They said there was nothing wrong with the sensors/system and they documented it (specifically saying no problem found vehicle is operating normally at this time). However, a day or two after the dealership, the problem returned and it continues to persist. In addition to this, the blind spot warning system also randomly goes off when nothing is nearby, but not as often as the braking system, which is more dangerous in my opinion.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-12
  • VIN: 2HKRW1H85MH
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: My vehicle (2021 Honda CRV EX-L, 47,000 miles) is currently out of factory warranty. However, issue with the steering rack has caused issues with sound and sticky steering. This is a known issue with this specific model. Honda diagnosed an issue with my vehicle as being power steering rack being faulty. A manufacture defect they added. This was after replacing a axle they suspected turned out it was not the issue. They will not honor a full replacement of this faulty part. At the moment after going back and worth, they are agreeing to take care of half the repair amount which we feel is unacceptable knowing that this issue is a manufacture defect. We are aware of a current investigation with the NHTSA that's looking into this matter but we wanted to reach out and ask if Honda should be liable for the cost of the repairs regardless of the warranty expired. Latest negative Honda Cr-v hybrid car reviews

  1. Rupert Grant 2025-09-18

    Vehicle year: 2022

The 2022 Honda CRV Hybrid unfortunately does not come with a spare tire, only an inflation kit. I understand your concern, especially if you plan on going on extended trips. It can be worrisome to think about what to do in the event of a flat tire, especially if it's in the sidewall. While the inflation kit may not be a perfect solution, it can be helpful in some situations. However, I completely understand your preference for a spare tire and the peace of mind it provides. Thank you for sharing your feedback on this issue, it's important for Honda to hear from their customers.

  2. Garett Tromp 2025-09-15

    Vehicle year: 2022

I purchased the CRV AWD Hybrid Touring in April 2021 with the expectation of great gas mileage, but unfortunately, I have been disappointed. Despite driving 47 miles to work, my per tank mileage averages between 29-33 miles per gallon, which is hardly worth the additional cost of the hybrid engine. It seems that the battery pack in the CRV is too small to support highway miles effectively. Additionally, the gas tank is not 14 gallons as advertised, but 12, which means I average only 365 miles per tank. On the bright side, the ride is comfortable, and the AWD works great in rain and snow, giving me confidence that the car will not lose traction. However, I have experienced some issues with the lane keep assist weaving back and forth and the Apple Carplay arbitrarily disconnecting and not reconnecting unless I run through the setup process all over again.

  3. Perry Ullrich 2025-04-24

    Vehicle year: 2021

I am confident that the MPG of the HyBrid will improve with more driving experience. The seat warmers could benefit from some improvement, and the safety features may require some getting used to. However, I believe that the premium paid for the HyBrid will ultimately be worth it.

  4. Crawford Feil 2025-04-01

    Vehicle year: 2022

The gas mileage was good for the first couple of months and is now dropping to around 28. I have only had the car for 5 months. It's disappointing.

  5. Filiberto Kovacek 2025-03-23

    Vehicle year: 2022

The safety features are wonderful. The LED lights improve driving outside the city and in the suburbs. The car is extremely comfortable. The salesman at Honda of New Rochelle did not mention the new Federal law requiring hybrid cars to make a distinguished sound while driving under 25 miles per hour, which is meant to help pedestrian walkers who are hard of hearing since hybrid engines are quiet. However, the noise can be annoying on local streets and traffic.

Latest positive Honda Cr-v hybrid car reviews

  1. Isidro Huels 2025-10-01

    Vehicle year: 2022

Comfortable driving ergonomics, spacious storage, an array of safety features, and a nice blend of power and fuel efficiency. Everything that one could ask for. Well done, Honda.

  2. Alphonso Bechtelar 2025-09-29

    Vehicle year: 2021

I leased this vehicle for my ministry/business and it was the best decision I have made! It's a fuel-efficient, almost self-driving SUV with 5-person seating that can go almost 600 miles on one tank of gas! As gas prices continue to rise, I'm happy to know that I'm saving our ministry/business money every day.

  3. Neal Koch 2025-09-26

    Vehicle year: 2022

It was time for a change. As I approached middle age, I realized that my beloved 2 door VW GTI with manual trans was no longer cutting it. With a big dog and a parent who uses a walker, I needed something more practical. Although I was hoping to get an Electric vehicle, the high costs and limited availability made it impossible. That's when I discovered the CR-V Hybrid, which ticks a lot of boxes. It may not excel in any one area, but it's pretty good at a whole lot of things, all in one cost-effective package. I particularly love the comfortable leather seats (although the seat depth is a bit short for my long thighs), the great interior ergonomics, and the fairly intuitive in-car electronics. The adaptive cruise control and lane following assistance are a nice feature for long freeway trips, while the blindspot detection is a very welcome enhancement when backing out of my driveway on a very busy street. My dog loves the power tailgate, and I love the regenerative braking control paddles. However, it's worth noting that this is not quite the solid Honda build quality that I'm used to from 40 something years of being in a Honda/Acura family, but it's not bad. Additionally, it seems like everybody and their mother has a CR-V, so finding yours in a big parking lot can be an issue. Some people complain about the fuel economy, and I agree that it would be nice if the 40/38/35mpg EPA fuel economy ratings were achievable anywhere besides flat land at less than 55mph. Living in a hilly coastal area of California, I'm getting about 35.5mpg in mostly city driving with hills, and I got about 31mpg driving to Las Vegas. However, I think that's reasonable for a roomy mechanical 4-wheel drive SUV that comfortably carries 5 people and two weeks worth of groceries on 87 gasoline. I can't really think of another vehicle with all those capabilities that gets better fuel economy on gas.

I believe that women would really enjoy driving this car. As a 75-year-old, I have had experience with different cars, including the 2018 CRV regular turbo and the 2018 touring accord with low tires and big wheels. While I loved the electronic features of the accord, I found it difficult to handle in corners and judge the sides of the car due to the tires sticking out from the sides and constantly hitting curbs. The CRV, even the regular gas turbo touring, was much safer and easier to drive. The 2020 hybrid model is even better, with a faster and quieter engine, sport drive, and a heavier and more stable feel due to the battery, as well as slightly better gas mileage. The parking sensors are also a great feature. The only things I would add are a front camera and a heated steering wheel. Living in Cincinnati with its hot summers, cold winters, heavy rain, and many broken roads being repaired, I believe the CRV is a great choice, especially with its 19” touring wheels that do not get hit by sidewalks and high curbs. The info computers are easy to use and have a cartoonish look that I find appealing. They are also easier to see and have larger words and pictures than the accord. The voice integration is also better than the accord. If you are short, like me, you can set the key fob to lower the seat when you open the door and then hit the number 2 inside to raise it up for you. The CRV is a great option for anyone who is 5’ or shorter.
