1992 Chevrolet Lumina problems
The Chevrolet Lumina is a mid-size car that was produced and marketed by the Chevrolet division of General Motors from 1989 until 2001.
Background
The first generation of the Lumina replaced the Chevrolet Celebrity and Chevrolet Monte Carlo under a single nameplate; the mechanically unrelated Chevrolet Lumina APV minivan served as the successor for the Celebrity station wagon. The model line was based on the front-wheel-drive GM10 platform (later designated the GM W platform), shared with Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac. For 1995, the second-generation Lumina was introduced, serving as a substantial exterior revision of the previous generation (the two-door coupe was renamed the Monte Carlo). For the 2000 model year, the Lumina was replaced by the Chevrolet Impala; the model line would retain the W platform through the 2016 model year.
Throughout its production, both generations of the Lumina were produced by General Motors Canada at Oshawa Car Assembly (Oshawa, Ontario). For markets outside of North America, the Chevrolet Lumina was derived from other large GM sedans. From 1998 to 2013, the Lumina was marketed in the Middle East and South Africa as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Holden Commodore produced in Australia. From 2005 to 2006, GM Philippines sold the Lumina as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Buick Regal (sharing much of its body with its American counterpart).

Common 1992 Chevrolet Lumina problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Chevrolet Lumina 1992, several common problems have been identified:
- Stalling Issues: Owners have reported that the Lumina stalls when coming to a stop or idling, which can be a frustrating and potentially dangerous problem. This issue can be caused by various factors such as a faulty throttle position sensor, loose wires to the starter, or problems with the crank sensor or coolant temperature sensor. Stalling can also be linked to issues with the fuel system, like a dirty fuel tank or fuel line, a clogged fuel filter, or a failing fuel pump. Additionally, problems with the vacuum lines, spark plug wires, or the crankshaft wiring harness have been highlighted as potential culprits for stalling.
- Engine Running and Stalling: Another common complaint is the engine running fine but stalling when the gas is applied. This issue can occur intermittently, especially on hot days, and may be related to vacuum line leaks, wiring issues, or failing sensors like the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS) or Knock Sensor. The symptoms described by owners, such as the car stalling after applying gas and then running fine after cooling down, point towards potential sensor failures or issues with the throttle body.
- Ignition Coil Problems: Some owners have experienced issues with the ignition coils, leading to the car shutting off when heated up. Ignition coil problems can cause the engine to misfire, stall, or fail to start. Replacing the ignition coils can resolve these issues, ensuring proper ignition and engine performance.
- Fuel System Concerns: Problems related to the fuel system, such as fuel pump failure, clogged fuel filters, or overheating fuel pumps, have been reported by Lumina owners. Issues with the fuel system can result in poor engine performance, stalling, or difficulty starting the car. Regular maintenance of the fuel system, including checking fuel pressure and ensuring a clean fuel filter, is essential to prevent such problems.
- Other Potential Issues: Additional complaints include sputtering engines, hard starting, rich or lean air/fuel ratios, improper operation of emissions devices, reduced fuel economy, and improper converter clutch lockup. These issues can stem from various components like the throttle body, spark plugs, or the air mass flow throttle, and may require thorough inspection and maintenance to address effectively.
By addressing these common problems reported by Chevrolet Lumina 1992 owners, it is possible to diagnose and resolve issues promptly, ensuring optimal performance and reliability of the vehicle. Regular maintenance, timely repairs, and attention to potential warning signs can help mitigate these problems and keep the Lumina running smoothly.
Is a Chevy Lumina a good car?
With a competent car and a pricing structure that undercuts Ford and Chrysler, Chevy's Lumina offers a fine blend of function, value and performance. This is one GM product that was done right the first time, just like the new Malibu, which should be investigated closely by buyers interested in the Lumina.
How long can a Chevy Lumina last?
Most of the 1995's and up that I know of have well over 200,000 miles on and still very strong. I had 278,000 on mine when I sold it. It still ran perfect and everything still worked on the car. The only issue that I had was an intake gasket at 200,000.
Why did Chevy discontinue the Lumina?
In North America Chevrolet discontinued the Lumina in 2000 due to dwindling sales and the success of the reborn Impala. The Lumina nameplate was still used in some markets, in parts of Asia it was applied to the mid-sized Buick Century/Regal and a badge engineered version of the Holden Commodore sports sedan.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 1992 Lumina. I bought it back in 1994 from a lovely couple who had to enter a nursing home. I have to say, I've had very few problems with my Lumina and I wish they still made this model. I think Chevy probably didn't because people were hanging on to them too long! Can you believe there's only 48,000 miles on the odometer? (yes, that's the correct number) Right now, the Lumina does need some minor repairs like hoses and tires, but I get a complete tune-up every year. However, I recently got a 2007 Chevy Cobalt, so I'm afraid I will need to sell my Lumina. It's been such a great car and I've never had one that lasted so long with so few problems! I only hope the Cobalt will do as well. Thanks for listening!

We purchased 'Mina', as I affectionately call her, from a small country dealer when she had 65,000 miles on her. She was our beloved family car for a decade, and then accompanied our son during his final two years of college. For the past two years, she has been in the care of our daughter. Apart from the brakes (which need replacing approximately every 18 months due to a defect at manufacture) and regular maintenance, she has been incredibly reliable and has served us exceptionally well. We couldn't have asked for a better car! Unfortunately, she has developed some body issues, and we have decided to sell her. It's a sad decision, as I would have loved to keep her until she could no longer run, but our daughter needs a safer car at this point.

When I bought the car, it was already 10 years old and had 93K miles on it. However, it was fully loaded with an amazing GM Bose sound system. The 3.1 V6 engine was both quick and powerful, and with the overdrive, it provided great gas mileage, achieving 22 mpg in the city and 38-40 mpg on the highway at 70+mph with cruise control on. I even took it on several long trips from Pennsylvania to Florida and Texas. Unfortunately, the floating caliper was a faulty design, and I had to replace the brake pads every 6 months. The outer pad on the right rear would wear out quickly, while the others still looked new. I eventually learned to change only the outer pad if the others had no wear. After 16 years, there was minimal body rust, but the salt had taken a toll on the undercarriage, brake lines, and bolts. I would still be driving it today, but a truck hit me and totaled it. Despite the accident, the car still ran great at 216K miles.

Luminas are awesome! I love mine because it goes 110 mph and gets 25 mpg. Plus, it has a spoiler!
-
I bought the car from someone who serviced it regularly and took good care of it. I also take good care of it and it takes good care of me. It's been a great value. Maintenance has been minimal and there have been no major repairs or problems.

Hi there! I'm excited to share my experience with my first car, a Lumina. At 17, I was thrilled to get behind the wheel of this car, even though it had 175,000 miles on it. I drive around 100 miles a day, mostly on the highway, and I've had to replace a few things like the struts, spark plugs, and plug wires. I even upgraded the radio! The car rides well and the seats are super comfortable. While the gas mileage could be better at around 25mpg, it's been a reliable car overall. I have noticed that it's a bit loud due to the mileage on the drivetrain, but that's to be expected. Unfortunately, I'm currently experiencing some issues with the drivability at 180,000 miles, and my trunk leaks a bit. However, other than that and some rough shifting, I haven't had any major problems. All in all, I would definitely recommend the Lumina as a great first car!

When I was unemployed, my Dad kindly gave me a ride in this car after our family heirloom, the '87 Celebrity wagon, was wrecked (again). Although the Lumina was not the most reliable car, it was still a great help. It reminded me of my old '94 Grand Am GT Quad4 HO, but with a little less power and worse fuel economy. Despite the fact that the car needed attention every month, it never had any major issues, which is a testament to GM's quality.

Bought in 02, it now has over 190k miles on it. Despite some wear and tear, it's still a great first vehicle. The interior is roomy and comfortable, making it a pleasure to drive. While the AC has not worked since I got it, it's easy to maintain and has been reliable overall. I've had to replace the fuel pump, brakes, and ball bearing in suspension, as well as deal with several fuel injection problems. However, these issues were all fixable and didn't detract from the overall experience. Even when the door handle broke, my dad was able to fix it with a zip tie, and when the headlight came off, it was easily fixed with superglue. All in all, I'm happy with my purchase and would recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and comfortable vehicle.

Your 92 Lumina sounds like an amazing car! It's great to hear that it has been so dependable and has taken you so far. Even with all those miles, it's still running strong with all the original parts. You must have taken really good care of it!
