1992 Ford Escort problems

ford logo

The North American version of the Ford Escort is a range of cars that was sold by Ford from the 1981 to 2003 model years. The direct successor of the Ford Pinto, the Escort also largely overtook the role of the European-imported Ford Fiesta as the smallest vehicle in the Ford model line in North America. Produced across three generations, the first generation was a subcompact; the latter two generations were compact cars. Becoming highly successful in the marketplace, the Escort became the best-selling car in the United States after 1982, a position it would hold for much of the 1980s.

Produced across three generations, the Escort was the first world car developed by Ford, with the first-generation American Escort designed alongside Ford of Europe, who transitioned the Escort Mk III to front-wheel drive. During its production, the Escort also underwent a wide use of platform sharing and rebranding. The first generation served as the basis of the longer-wheelbase Ford Tempo/Mercury Topaz, the two-seat Ford EXP/Mercury LN7 and was rebranded as the Mercury Lynx. The second generation was introduced for 1991, growing into the compact segment. Moving away from a shared design with Ford of Europe, the Escort now shared a platform with the Mazda 323 and sharing a body with the Ford Laser (a model line sold in Asia and Oceania); the Mercury Lynx was replaced by the Mercury Tracer. For 1997, the third generation served as an extensive redesign of the previous-generation sedan; the Escort ZX2 two-door was introduced, with the Mercury Tracer adopting a similar redesign.

Ford introduced the Ford Focus in North America for 2000 as its third "world car", phasing it in as the successor of the Escort. After 2000, the four-door Escort was moved primarily to fleet sales (with the coupe remaining available); production ended entirely after the 2002 model year. In contrast to the first-generation American Escort and Escort Mk III of Ford of Europe (and the Mondeo/Contour and Mercury Mystique), the Focus adopted a much larger degree of commonality between its European and North American variants, in effect, becoming the original world car Ford had originally envisioned with the Escort.

During its entire production, the Escort was produced by Wayne Stamping & Assembly in (Wayne, Michigan) and the first generation was also produced by Edison Assembly in (Edison, New Jersey), San Jose Assembly Plant in (Milpitas, California), and Oakville Assembly in (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) while the second and third generations were also produced by Hermosillo Stamping and Assembly in (Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico).

Common 1992 Ford Escort problems

The 1992 Ford Escort is known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the issues in detail:

  • Rear Seat Belt Failure: The rear seat belt may fail to retract, causing inconvenience and safety concerns.
  • Brake Light Bulb Overheating: The brake light bulb can overheat, which may cause parts to malfunction. This issue can lead to safety risks while driving, as other drivers may not be aware of the vehicle's braking status.
  • Suspension Problems: The 1992 Ford Escort has a known issue with the front suspension's offset toe adjusting pin, which can fracture under certain conditions. This problem can lead to a decrease in vehicle stability and handling.
  • Fuel System Issues: Fatigue cracks can develop in the solder joint between the fuel return tube and the fuel pump sending unit located at the top of the fuel tank. This issue can lead to fuel leaks and potential fire hazards.
  • Stop Lamp Switch Malfunction: The stop lamp switches can intermittently malfunction, resulting in the stop lamps not illuminating when the brakes are applied. This issue can lead to safety risks while driving, as other drivers may not be aware of the vehicle's braking status.
  • Computer Controls: Some owners have reported issues with computer controls, but the specific details of these problems are not provided in the search results.
  • Seats & Seat Belts: Complaints about seats and seat belts have been reported, but the specific issues are not mentioned in the search results.
  • Paint Issues: Paint problems have been reported, but the specific details of these issues are not provided in the search results.
  • Ignition System Problems: Issues with the ignition system have been reported, including the need for a tune-up and potential problems with the ignition assembly. These issues can lead to poor engine performance and difficulty starting the vehicle.
  • Cooling System Problems: The cooling system can experience issues, such as a faulty thermostat or a malfunctioning radiator fan. These problems can lead to overheating and potential engine damage.
  • High RPMs: The vehicle may experience high RPMs when started or idling, which can indicate engine performance issues. These problems can lead to decreased fuel efficiency and increased wear on engine components.
  • FEAD Belt Problems: The Front End Accessory Drive (FEAD) belt can experience issues, such as lack of tension, leading to a high-pitched noise. This problem can lead to engine overheating and coolant leakage.
  • Worn Flexible Joint Gasket: A worn flexible joint gasket can cause noises from below the vehicle and a worn-out suspension feeling. This issue can lead to decreased ride comfort and handling.
  • Ticking From Engine: A ticking noise from the engine can indicate engine misfires or issues with the check engine light. This problem can lead to decreased engine performance and increased emissions.

These common problems with the 1992 Ford Escort can affect the vehicle's safety, performance, and longevity. It is essential for owners to address these issues promptly to ensure the vehicle's safe and reliable operation.

WHEN THEY AAA GOT THERE AND GOT OUT OF THEIR TRUCK, THEY GOT IN THE DRIVERS SEAT AND TURNED THE KEY AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP WITH NO JUMP. WE TOOK A LOOK AT THE IGNITION WHEN WE GOT HOME AND TURNED THE KEY AND IT WAS STICKING BUT IT TURNED ON. I WAS HAVING THE CAR BROUGHT INTO A SHOP TO GET IT CHECKED OUT AND IT DIED AGAIN. WHEN TRIED TO RESTART THE PIN IN THE END OF THE IGNITION SNAPPED OFF AND THE CAR WOULDN'T START. I ENDED UP HAVING IT TOWED TO THE SHOP AND THEY REPLACED THE IGNITION. OVER THE COURSE OF THE LAST 9 MONTHS THE IGNITION HAS STARTED DOING IT AGAIN. I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS THE ALTERNATOR AT FIRST BUT AFTER IT WAS REPLACED FOUND OUT THAT IT WASN'T THAT. IT OVER CHARGES THE BATTERY AND HAS SERIOUS POWER SURGES AND THEN JUST DIES LIKE NOTHING WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE STREET. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON VARIOUS OCCASIONS AND NOW IT JUST WONT START AT ALL. I KNOW IT ISN'T THE BATTERY, STARTER OR ALTERNATOR. I BELIEVE IT TO BE THE IGNITION SWITCH. THE STARTED DOESN'T ENGAGE WHEN YOU TURN THE KEY BUT ALL THE POWER COMES ON. *JB

Negative 1992 Ford Escort car reviews

  1. Chadrick Parker 2024-11-17

I had to replace the original engine at 100K. Unfortunately, the head warped on this new engine when the heater core, the fan, and thermostat all went out, leaving me without AC and heat. Additionally, the gas tank cracked and had to be replaced, and the driver's side seatbelt motor locked up mid-track. I have done extensive front-end work, but unfortunately, oil has leaked out all over the floorboard. The sun visors both broke off, and there are no left-side speakers. Currently, the UV joint, transmission, clutch, or something else is about to go out. If you're interested in purchasing this car, please let me know.

  2. Jovany Blick 2024-10-16

I recently got rid of my 1992 Ford Escort LX with an automatic transmission. Unfortunately, my wife burned out the transmission, but it had served us well with 118,000 miles on it. I originally purchased it for my college commutes and it was perfect for that. I have always loved hatchbacks and this car was no exception. It got me through cold winters and blistering hot summers. I decided to let it go because the cost of a rebuilt transmission was more than the car was worth. Instead, I gave it to my father-in-law who fixed the transmission and is now driving it again.

  3. Ned Mertz 2024-10-12

Your Ford Escort Pony is a reliable car that has never let you down when you needed it. Although there have been some issues with malfunctioning automatic seatbelts, failing gas and unreliable temperature gauges, the car still operates fine and is a fun car to drive. The 5-speed transmission is great, but the clutch could be improved.

  4. Marco Kozey 2024-10-05

Hi there! I'm actually the second owner of this car. My aunt was the first owner and she took excellent care of it. When I turned 16, she passed it down to me. At first, everything was great, but unfortunately, we've had to replace the alternator three times now and it looks like we'll have to do it again soon. The alternator has been draining the battery, so we've had to replace that a few times as well. Other than that, I haven't had any major issues with the car.

  5. Colton Runolfsdottir 2024-08-21

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my new car. I recently got it with 120k miles on it. While my previous car, a 1984 Ford Thunderbird, had over 200 horsepower, I was pleasantly surprised by the Escort's 88 horsepower. It's more than enough to zip around town! Overall, I give this car two thumbs up.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your car as the OEM buyer! It sounds like it's been a great fit for you, especially with its impressive mileage, performance, and fun factor. I love that you can even fit your bicycles in the back, including your recumbent! It's great to hear that you haven't had any major issues with the car, except for that one time when the missus parked it badly. I'm curious, what made you decide to replace the sport Eagle GT+4 tires with touring tires and the OEM struts with gas charged struts? Thank you for sharing your experience with me!

  2. Kyle Batz 2024-10-24

I bought my Escort from a family friend and have had it for 6 years. It has nearly 193,000 miles on it, but it's still ticking! In the 6 years that I've had it, I've only had to do regular tune-ups and change out the timing belt, water pump, and transmission. Not bad at all!

  3. Deangelo Willms 2024-10-05

I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed it! It sounds like it was the best!

  4. Travis Torp 2024-10-01

This is by far the best car I have ever owned. I have owned many cars in my time, but I enjoyed this one the most. In 8 years and 89000 miles, I never had to do any repairs to this car, only normal wear and tear items. I regret ever trading it in. I am looking today to buy another one. It will be hard to find a clean one, but it will be worth it. If you are looking and find one, buy it! It is well worth the value, especially if it is clean.

  5. Wilson Braun 2024-08-24

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share some information about my car with you. I acquired it back in '99 and have been driving it an average of 25,000 miles per year. It's amazing to think that by the end of '03, it will have 200,000 miles on it! The best part is that it's all original, except for the air filter, belts, and water pump. I've thought about replacing some of the other parts, like the plugs, wires, and sensors, but it's still running great and getting an average of 35 mpg (and 40.8 on trips). Can you believe it? This car mostly sees highway miles, but I do take it to the local drag strip every once in a while. Thanks for listening!
