The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.

Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.

In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.

In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Common 2014 Honda Accord hybrid problems

The 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid is a popular vehicle known for its excellent fuel economy, strong acceleration, roomy and high-quality interior, responsive handling, and user-friendly interior controls. However, like any other vehicle, it is not without its common problems. Here are some of the issues that 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid owners have reported:

  • Electrical Flaw Disabling Gasoline Engine: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported a recall of nearly 6,800 Honda Accord Hybrids from the 2014 and 2015 model years due to an electrical flaw that could disable the car's gasoline engine, leaving the vehicles to travel on battery power alone. This issue is caused by the Accord Hybrid's cell voltage sensor (CVS) not having sufficient electrical noise toughness, which may result in the CVS incorrectly interpreting electrical noise from the hybrid battery inverter and motor circuits. This glitch can disable the car's gasoline propulsion system and put the Accord Hybrid in failsafe electric vehicle mode, limiting the car's speed to 40 mph and reducing its range to about two miles. When the battery charge runs out, the car will stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Transmission Issues: Some 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid owners have reported transmission problems, including slipping, jerking, and hesitation during acceleration. These issues can be caused by various factors, such as low transmission fluid levels, worn-out clutch plates, or faulty solenoids. While transmission issues are not unique to the Accord Hybrid, they can be more challenging to diagnose and repair due to the vehicle's hybrid powertrain.
  • Hybrid Battery Replacement: Another common problem reported by 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid owners is the need for a hybrid battery replacement. The hybrid battery is a critical component of the vehicle's powertrain, and its failure can result in reduced fuel efficiency, decreased acceleration, and even complete power loss. While the hybrid battery is designed to last for many years, it can eventually wear out, especially in high-mileage vehicles. Replacing the hybrid battery can be expensive, costing several thousand dollars, but it is a necessary repair to keep the vehicle running smoothly.

It is important to note that while these problems have been reported by some 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid owners, they are not necessarily indicative of widespread issues with the vehicle. The Accord Hybrid has received generally positive reviews from automotive experts and has a reputation for reliability and durability. However, like any vehicle, regular maintenance and timely repairs are essential to ensure the Accord Hybrid's longevity and performance.

How long does a 2014 Honda Accord hybrid battery last?

Your 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid battery will typically last between 3 to 5 years, but that can change laboriously depending on battery size, type of battery, weather conditions and driving habits. Even still, just because your battery isn't entirely dead, doesn't mean it's operating perfectly.

What is the most common problem with a 2014 Honda Accord?

Electrical problems, including starter failures, are the most common issue. They are very common across the 2013 and 2014 models, and replacing the starter costs about $720. Excessive oil consumption is a frequent complaint owners have. Unfortunately, the oil consumption seems to be part of the engine design.

Is it worth buying a Honda Accord Hybrid?

A: The Honda Accord hybrid is a very good car. I recently road tested one, and it was comfortable and very economical (45 miles per gallon) and performed very well. Overall, the ride and handling were quite good.

What is the range of the 2014 Honda Accord hybrid battery?

Continuously variable transmission. 13-mile electric-only range. 574-mile combined range.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-23
  • VIN: 1HGCR2F83EA
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: While driving, the Electric Power Steering system stopped working and the EPS warning light came on. I had to forcefully steer the car to the shoulder with great difficulty and shut the car off. I sat on the shoulder for approximately 10 minutes, restarted the car, noted the steering appeared to be functioning properly and began to continue home only to have the same issue again within 2 minutes of pulling away from the shoulder of the road. I managed to forcibly steer the car back onto the shoulder of the road and called for a tow truck to take it to a shop and the family home. The ship advised there was no fault code found with their system tools and that the issue may be with the electronics on the car needing to be reviewed/updated/replaced by Honda. It is my understanding this is not an isolated incident and could have resulted in a major crash had I not utilized my training as a police officer and accident reconstruction s[pecialist with the PD to recognize the issue and manage to keep the car safely in control until safely stopped.

  • Summary: My 2014 Honda has been have 2 major issues over the life of the vehicle. 1. VTC Actuator - prior to the oil indicator light coming on and the time to change the oil, my car screams out a loud consistent noise. I have reported this concern to Team Honda in Baton Rouge on numerous occasions. The most recent repost was on [XXX]. I am concerned my engine will fail or explode. 2. Tires Light Indicator (See Pictures) My tires were check on [XXX] and I spent almost $300 on a new tire. The same light which were on on that day came back on. All 4 of my tires were checked out and 3 out of 4 of them were in good condition. This has also been an ongoing issue. The tire light random come on, then the other 5 (all related) flashed an the dashboard. My first time experiencing this was less than a month after getting my vehicle but the tires was still covered under warranty at that time. By these lights coming on during non-emergencies, the consumer can not identify when the vehicle actually needed to be serviced. Both has been ongoing and reported for years and fed up with these issues. I am surprised they have not issued a recall yet! Thanks for reading this and I look forward to hearing from a Honda representative very soon. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-25
  • VIN: 1HGCR2F81EA
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: In 2020, there was a recall (#20V769) on the driveshaft of the 2014 Honda Accord. The car was in the Midwest for 4 years, so I was concerned that the issue with corrosion could directly impact the vehicle due to weather conditions. I went to have the recall serviced, but still noticed the car to be sluggish upon shifting in to gear. I reported the concern to the Honda dealer to see if it was repaired correctly and to understand why it took time for the car to "switch" in to gear. After review, they said nothing was wrong with the car. I continued to have these issues, however every time I went to the Honda service team to get an oil repair the diagnosis report did not show any issues with the transmission. There was a recommendation to get the transmission oil changed, which I did in March 2023. The car will still sluggish after this service. On July 25, 2024 the cars transmission/ drive power disengaged in the middle of a busy road. The car came to a complete stop while moving. The gear shaft failed to engage with the transmission. Prior to this no transmission warning had ever triggered, nor reported by Honda's diagnosis reports. I again stated my concern that the driver shaft may not have been repaired correctly to Honda. They instead faulted that the wrong transmission fluid caused " Transmission is burnt up causing issue of not moving. Tech found transmission has wrong fluid installed which caused internal wear and failure of transmission parts." This statement is false. The car stopped on July 25. In an effort to problem solve the transmission fluid was drained and the incorrect fluid was used, but that was after the car was not shifting, so if the transmission was in fact burnt from the wrong fluid it was a result of the service in 2023. However, that is not the cause of the issue. I believe that failure to repair the drive shaft correct resulted in effects on the transmission that were either intentionally omitted or were not discovered.

2014 Honda Accord hybrid recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2014 Honda Accord hybrid.

2015-09-25
  • Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
  • Components: HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Honda Accord Hybrid vehicles manufactured August 29, 2013, to May 30, 2015. Electrical interference may cause the hybrid system to switch into fail-safe mode, disabling the gasoline engine, limiting the vehicle's speed to 40 miles per hour and functioning only on battery power. Once the battery is discharged, the vehicle will stall.
  • Consequence: A vehicle stall increases the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will update the hybrid system software, free of charge. The recall began on November 6, 2015. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is JT7.

Negative 2014 Honda Accord hybrid car reviews

  1. Howard Robel 2024-08-24

I recently upgraded my car for more comfort, power, and size after my previous one hit 99k. I was immediately drawn to this car due to its impressive mileage ratings of 45/50 and positive reviews. I've been driving it for about 6 months now and have already put 21k miles on it. While my average mpg is currently at 38.5, I do tend to drive a bit faster than most (averaging 75 on the highway) and I also purchased the car during the winter months, which can affect mileage. Overall, I'm quite happy with the car's performance and comfort. However, I'm not sure if upgrading to the hybrid version is worth the extra cost unless you plan on keeping it for over 500,000 miles. I have noticed a couple of issues, such as some paint chips on the front hood (which is unusual for me, as this is my 12th new purchase) and a knocking sound on the passenger side when starting or stopping, which sounds like a spring popping. I mentioned this to the dealer during an oil change, but unfortunately, a mechanic wasn't available at the time. I've made an appointment for next week, so hopefully, it can be resolved soon.

  2. Kenton Mueller 2024-05-28

I was initially drawn to the MPG numbers, but unfortunately my Accord only gets 34mpg on the highway and 40mpg in the city. When I brought it back to Hendrick Honda, they provided me with some feedback on my driving habits, but ultimately found that everything was in working order. As a loyal Honda Accord customer, I was disappointed with the service I received and left feeling betrayed. Despite this experience, I still have 65,000 miles on my 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid and it is still running strong. While the gas mileage has dropped to between 33mpg and 36mpg, I am still satisfied with my purchase. I have learned that buying a used car can be a better option than buying new, regardless of the make and model.

  3. Hank Jerde 2024-05-20

The vehicle's fuel efficiency has been disappointing, with an average of 43MPG over 12 months of driving and a further decrease to 38MPG after three years. In addition, the car's pickup is subpar, especially when compared to other hybrid models. Overall, the extra cost of this vehicle is not justified by its lackluster performance.

  4. Stevie Hettinger 2024-04-27

I have owned four Hybrid cars so far, including the Lexus ES300H, Lexus CT200H, a 2012 Camry Hybrid, and now this Honda Accord. While the previous models delivered the exact MPG as advertised, this Accord with 5k miles on it is not even close. Despite this, the service department at my local dealer suggested that I break it in, which was surprising as I did not have to do so with my previous cars. Additionally, I have been experiencing a loud popping noise from the driver's side front end. Although this car has some great safety features, I do not believe it is worth the $6k more than the Camry Hybrid. After one year of ownership, I decided to sell this car. If you are in the market for a mid-sized hybrid, I would recommend the Camry Hybrid. If money is not an issue, the Lexus 300H is a great option.

  5. Vincent Hammes 2024-03-10

I recently got a car and took it on a road trip from Houston to Dallas. During the first 300 miles, I drove cautiously with low acceleration, but my friends took over for the next 300 miles and drove with full acceleration, which was a lot of fun. After driving 1000 miles, I was pleased to see that I got 39.2 mpg, which is great. The car is also very comfortable for long drives. However, I noticed that once I hit 60mph, the instant mpg drops to 36, but if I go beyond 75mph, it improves. I even managed to touch 85mph with just 3 power bars and the ride still felt smooth with low noise.

Positive 2014 Honda Accord hybrid car reviews

  1. Dennis Ullrich 2024-09-16

I recently purchased two Honda Accord Hybrid Touring sedans for my household, but unfortunately, neither of them has come close to achieving 50 mpg. One of the sedans has HFP 19 wheels with Continental ContiSport 3's installed (from my old Accord coupe), so I can forgive that car for underperforming in the MPG department. However, the car seems to hesitate a lot during highway speeds above 55 MPH, and I'm not sure what the cause of this is. The other car has achieved 42 MPG once and averages 37, despite the driver being very conservative. I hope that this is just a break-in period thing. It's worth noting that neither car drives in EV mode more than 10% of the time.

Just picked up my Accord Hybrid Touring edition a few days ago. I hope you're all doing well! I have a question for other owners. I can't seem to get my hybrid battery gauge above 6 bars, and my gas mileage above 40 MPG. Does your gauge go to the full 8 bars? I'd really appreciate your input before I ask the dealer. I recently came out of a Mercedes E350, so while the Accord may not have the same standard of luxury, I absolutely love all the techno gadgets!

We've driven over 100,000 miles in just over four years with no issues, except for a few extra flat tires. The only drawbacks we've noticed are that the speed control is a bit sluggish and doesn't respond right away, the trunk space is pretty small, and there's no full-size spare tire. However, we're excited to be purchasing a new Honda Accord Hybrid soon!

As a fellow Toyota enthusiast, I was pleasantly surprised by the ride and options offered in this car. I ultimately decided to purchase it and am thrilled with my decision. Despite its high mileage, I have full confidence in Honda's reputation. I am looking forward to many years of luxurious and happy travels!

I love this car! The 2010 Accord was great, but the new hybrid is even better with its sleek style and economical gas mileage. My favorite feature is the power it has at take off, which feels like a V6 engine. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this car has even more power than the 2010 Honda, despite its focus on fuel economy. Thank you, Honda, for creating such an amazing car!
