Common 1998 Chrysler Concorde problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Chrysler Concorde 1998, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Engine Failure Due to Oil Sludge: Owners have reported issues with engine failure due to oil sludge in the 1998 Chrysler Concorde. The 2.7L DaimlerChrysler engine in this model is highly susceptible to oil sludge, which can coat the inside of the engine, retain heat, and put severe strain on mechanical parts.
  2. Heat/AC Turns On Automatically (ATC System): Another common problem reported is the automatic activation of the heat/AC system in the 1998 Concorde. This issue can lead to unexpected operation of the heating or cooling system, causing discomfort and potentially affecting the vehicle's performance.
  3. Car Dies While Driving: Owners have experienced instances where the car dies while driving, posing a serious safety concern. This problem can lead to sudden loss of power and control, creating hazardous situations on the road.
  4. Electrical Issues: The 1998 Chrysler Concorde has been associated with various electrical problems, including lights blinking on and off inside the car, dash lights flickering, stereo switching between CD player and radio unexpectedly, and the air conditioner turning on despite a broken compressor. These issues can affect the vehicle's functionality and safety.
  5. Other Reported Problems: In addition to the above, owners have also reported complaints related to the transmission, windows, and HVAC system in the 1998 Chrysler Concorde. These issues can impact the overall performance, comfort, and safety of the vehicle.

By addressing these common problems based on owner complaints, it becomes evident that the 1998 Chrysler Concorde has faced significant challenges related to engine reliability, electrical malfunctions, and other critical components. Owners of this model should be aware of these issues to ensure timely maintenance and repairs to maintain the vehicle's performance and safety.

WHEN I DID GET THE CAR TO START I TOOK IT TO HARMON'S EXPERT AUTO TO SEE WHAT WAS WRONG WITH IT. I WAS THEN INFORMED THE CAR'S OIL PORTALS WERE CLOGGED DUE TO OIL SLUDGE. THE RECOMMENDED FIX WAS A NEW ENGINE. I WAS TOLD THE CAR HAD ONLY 15 POUNDS OF OIL PRESSURE AND THAT EVENTUALLY THE MOTOR WILL BLOW DUE TO THE OIL SLUDGE. LASTLY I WAS INFORMED THAT THEY SEE THIS PROBLEM ALL THE TIME WITH THE 2.7L ENGINE IN THE CHRYSLER CONCORDES, AND THAT THEY CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY CHRYSLER WILL DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. NEITHER CAN I. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,STRUCTURE,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-06-19
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 2C3HD46RXWH
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,STRUCTURE,SEATS
  • Summary: I WOULD LIKE TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH DAIMLER-CHRYSLER REGARDING THE LONGEVITY OF THEIR AUTOMOBILES. THISWAS THE SECOND VEHICLE THAT FAILED BETWEEN 100,000 AND 110,000 WITH PROPER MAINTENANCE AND UPKEEP. I HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE HEADLIGHTS, DOOR SEALS, THE AUTOMATIC SEATS AND NOW THE ENGINE. I TOOK THE CAR TO CHRYSLER DEALER, AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT MANAGER TOLD ME I HAD A BAD ROD AND THE ENGINE WAS VIRTUALLY SHOT AND WASN'T WORTH FIXING. HE SAID HE WAS ASHAMED TO SAY THE 2.7 ENGINES WERE JUNK. I HAVE RESEARCHED MY CAR AND FOUND OUT THAT THERE WERE A LOT OF OTHERS WITH THE SAME, IF NOT MORE PROBLEMS THAN WHAT I HAD, WHICH INDICATED THAT DAIMLER-CHRYSLER SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF FOR NOT CARING OR MAKING GOOD FOR THEIR MISTAKES INSTEAD OF IGNORING THEM! THIS CAR HAS HAD MANY OTHER PROBLEMS, INCLUDING ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS WITH DOOR LOCKS, THE POWER SEATS, AND THE SEALS FROM AROUND THE DOORS. I MADE THE MISTAKE OF NOT RESEARCHING THE VEHICLE BEFORE I BOUGHT IT. I WILL NEVER DO THAT AGAIN! I JUST WISH THAT DAIMLER-CHRYSLER WOULD CARE MORE ABOUT THEIR CARS, AND THE CONSUMERS THAT WERE BUYING THEM, AND THEN MAYBE THEY WOULD HAVE MORE SALES SINCE THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE STINKS. I REALLY DIDN'T WANT TO SAY A TRUE STATEMENT ABOUT SERVICE FOR DAIMLER-CHRYSLER PROBLEMS. I WILL NEVER BUY A DAIMLER-CHRYSLER PRODUCT AGAIN, AS PER MY OWN EXPERIENCES WITH PROBLEMS AND THE RESPONSES FROM THE COMPANY. IF I HAVE NO SATISFACTION FROM THIS EMAIL, WHICH I KNOW WILL NOT HAPPEN!, I WILL MAKE SURE THAT OTHERS KNOW WHAT I HAVE BEEN THROUGH!, ESPECIALLY WILL ALL THE VETERANS THAT I KNOW AND HAVE CONTACTS WITH SINCE SEPTEMBER 11, 2001.*AK

WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP TO REPLACE THE RADIATOR FAN, THE CONTACT WAS ALERTED THAT THE HEAD LIGHT GASKET NEEDED TO BE CHANGED, WHICH REQUIRED THE BUMPER TO BE DISMOUNTED TO REPLACE THE HEAD LIGHT LAMP. THE WAS MADE THE REPAIR RATHER EXPENSIVE. THE MOISTURE AND DUST ENTERING INTO THE HEAD LIGHT REDUCED THE ILLUMINATION POWER CREATING A SAFETY RISK FOR NIGHT DRIVING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED WHO CONNECTED CONFERENCED THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP DETERMINED THERE WAS NOT RECALL FOR THE HEAD LIGHT DEFECT AND THE REPAIR HAD TO BE COVERED BY THE CONTACT. THE CONTACT REFUSED TO PERFORM THE REPAIR. LATER THE HEAD LIGHT LAMP WAS REPLACED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DID NOT REPLACE THE GASKET, CONSEQUENTLY THE POOR ILLUMINATION PROBLEM REMAINED WITHOUT RESOLUTION.

  • Summary: ON THE MORNING OF 10/20/2006, MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING TO WORK IN OUR 1998 CHRYSLER CONCORDE. HE WAS IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC AND THE ENGINE STARTED KNOCKING AND LOSING POWER, THE OIL LIGHT ALSO CAME ON WHEN HE STOPPED. HE WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT TO WORK AND PARK THE CAR. ONLY TO BE TOLD BY A CERTIFIED MECHANIC THAT WE HAVE "ENGINE FAILURE" AND NEED A NEW ENGINE. MORE THAN LIKELY DUE TO "OIL SLUDGE"...WHATEVER THAT IS. WE HAVE HAD THE OIL CHANGED IN THIS CAR EVERY 3,000 MILES WITH SYNTHETIC OIL SINCE PURCHASING IT FROM MY PARENTS IN 2001. MY PARENTS HAD PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW AND ALSO HAD THE OIL CHANGED EVERY 3,000 MILES. OUR MECHANIC TOLD US THIS "OIL SLUDGE" AND ENGINE FAILURE IS A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THESE CARS THAT HAVE THE 2.7L ENGINE. WE CAN NOT AFFORD A NEW ENGINE LET ALONE A REBUILT ENGINE. MY HUSBAND HAS NO TRANSPORTATION TO WORK NOW, AS WE HAVE 5 CHILDREN 3 OF THEM UNDER 3, AND I CAN'T BE WITHOUT A VEHICLE DUE TO OUR MIDDLE DAUGHTER'S HEALTH PROBLEMS AND 3 WEEKLY DOCTOR APPOINTMENTS. MY HUSBAND'S JOB IS IN THE CITY WHICH IS A 30 - 45 MINUTE COMMUTE. NOW MY HUSBAND IS HAVING TO TAKE A BUS TO WORK AND HAS TO ADD 2 ADDITIONAL HOURS ON TO HIS COMMUTE TIME. LESS TIME WITH FAMILY AND A CAR WITH 72,000 MILES THAT WE CAN'T DRIVE!!! CHRYSLER'S OWN MECHANICS ADMIT THE DEFECT WITH THE 2.7L ENGINES, WHY WON'T THE COMPANY ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM. I'LL TELL YOU WHY......HAVING TO STAND UP AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR DEFECTIVE ENGINE WOULD TOTALLY BANKRUPT THEM. NOT TO MENTION TARNISH THE "MERCEDES-BENZ" AFFILIATION. SINCE HEARING THIS I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS AND HAVE FOUND THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND CHRYSLER WON'T DO A [XXX] THING ABOUT IT!!! MY PARENTS HAVE BEEN LOYAL CHRYSLER OWNERS SINCE THEIR FIRST NEW CAR 40 YEARS AGO......I DOUBT THAT THEY WILL CONTINUE TO BE. *NM INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

Negative 1998 Chrysler Concorde car reviews

  1. Ubaldo McClure 2024-04-11

If you're considering purchasing a used Concord or Intrepid from 2006 with the 2.7 engine, it's important to be aware of potential issues. Unfortunately, this engine was not designed properly and may not receive enough oil to keep the interior parts lubricated. I had a personal experience with my Concord, which had 72,000 miles on it and suddenly stopped working. It was quite expensive to replace the engine, which is not typical for a car with that mileage. It's important to be cautious when considering this type of vehicle.

Positive 1998 Chrysler Concorde car reviews

  1. Newell Kirlin 2025-01-08

This is a great car! We purchased it new and never had any problems outside of normal wear and tear. Although, at 100,000 miles, we did experience some issues. The water pump failed (it needs a redesign), and several sensors have failed, including the oil pressure sensor twice, the cam sensor (even the replacement failed after 1000 miles), and now we have a rod bearing problem. Despite these issues, we have 121,000 miles on it now and still appreciate the car. It was a fantastic car up to 100K!

  2. Joesph Hilpert 2025-01-01

Living in Michigan, I know firsthand how brutal the winters can be! I purchased this car from a small mom and pop dealership and have had it for about two years now. Despite being a used car with over 142,000 miles, I have no complaints! When I bought it, it already had 110,000 miles on it, but I haven't had any repair issues other than regular oil changes and new tires. While I agree that the rubber strip around the headlights can be a pain and keep popping out, the ride itself is quiet and solid. The air conditioning is awesome and I've had to turn it down many times because it was freezing me out! Overall, I think this is a great car for a used vehicle and I fully expect to get another 100,000 miles out of it. Thanks for reading!

  3. Noah Keeling 2024-11-26

This car handles like a dream and corners like a true champ. Its ride is smooth and very soft.

  4. Dean Raynor 2024-11-01

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the car we bought to replace my wife's 1989 Eagle Premier. The Concorde chassis is actually based on the Eagle, which is pretty cool! I have to say, this car is incredibly comfortable and handles freeway miles like a champ. The engine power is more than adequate and the drive train noise is minimal, although you can hear some road noise on rough surfaces. I found that with good performance tires (HR or VR), the handling is really great. Unfortunately, the stock Goodyear tires were beyond terrible. Mechanically, the car has been sound. We had one software failure, but other than that, we've only had to redo the brakes and replace the oil pan gasket. The 2.7 L V-6 is a good yet sophisticated engine, and I highly recommend using a good synthetic oil to prevent any issues. Thanks for reading!

I really enjoyed my Concorde and never would have thought that just two years after purchasing it and paying off a $9,000.00 loan, I would no longer be driving it. Unfortunately, the engine blew unexpectedly. I have heard from many people that the 2.7 engine is not very reliable and that the car engine was not built correctly. It would be great if Chrysler could recall these cars and help out their customers. I work hard for my money and now have to invest in another car. I would advise against purchasing a Chrysler Concorde with a 2.7 engine, as they are not very reliable.
