2013 Hyundai Veloster problems
The Hyundai Veloster (Korean: 현대 벨로스터, romanized: Hyeondae Belloseuteo) is a compact car first produced in 2011 by Hyundai, with sales beginning in South Korea on March 10, 2011, and in Canada and the United States since the fall of 2011. In South Korea, it was marketed under Hyundai's 'Premium Youth Lab'. It was unveiled on January 10, 2011, at the Detroit Auto Show, and fills the void left when Hyundai discontinued the Hyundai Tiburon after the 2008 model year.
The car differs from most other hatchbacks with its asymmetrical door configuration, featuring one large door on the driver side and two smaller doors on the passenger side. This configuration is more common on commercial vehicles and minivans. In North America, the Veloster was equipped with Blue Link, a new telematics system which will eventually be standard on all Hyundai models. The system is comparable to OnStar in General Motors vehicles, and provides customers with automatic crash notification, vehicle diagnostics, and remote control of vehicle features, among others.
Development and early concepts
HND-3 concept (2007)
The Hyundai HND-3 concept was the third sport compact concept car styled at Hyundai's Design and Technical Center. It included 2.0-liter DOHC Theta inline four-cylinder engine and five-speed automatic transmission. The concept car became a Veloster Coupe in 2011.
The car concept was unveiled at the 2007 Seoul Motor Show, with the final production version released on January 11 at the Detroit Auto Show. The Veloster is developed under the codename FS, and is built on a modified version of the Cee'd's front-wheel drive platform.

Common 2013 Hyundai Veloster problems
The 2013 Hyundai Veloster has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine and transmission.
One of the most common engine problems is excessive oil consumption, with several owners reporting that their Veloster burned through around 2.5 quarts of oil per 2,000 miles.
Another significant engine problem is related to the connecting rod, which has been reported to fail in some cases, resulting in heavy smoke and excessive shaking.
Transmission problems are also common in the 2013 Veloster, with many owners reporting transmission slippage, high RPMs yet poor acceleration, and odd noises.
In addition to engine and transmission problems, some owners of the 2013 Veloster have reported issues with the Bluetooth connectivity and syncing, with some experiencing their entire entertainment system freezing because of a faulty Bluetooth connection.
It is essential to note that while these problems are common, not all 2013 Veloster owners have experienced them. However, potential buyers should be aware of these issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these problems before they become severe, potentially saving owners from costly repairs or replacements.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-23
- VIN: KMHTC6AE6DU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: A connecting rod bearing failed in the engine leading to catastrophic engine failure with the connecting rod breaking through the wall of the engine block causing a hole and undriveable vehicle. According to my research, this issue has been recalled in adjacent model years (2015-2016) but not in my model year (2013) that has the same engine. This issue has already been confirmed in these engines, but Hyundai states my car is not included in the recall. This was a safety risk because the engine failure breached the engine wall which could have ignited engine oil and caused a fire. The engine may have also failed at a critical driving moment when acceleration was needed and stranded the car in an unsafe position. Yes, the problem was reproduced at the dealer's service center because the failure occurred while they were test driving my vehicle. Since the service center tech was the one driving the car when the incident occured, I do not know if there was a fire or not and the speed they were traveling, etc. The vehicle has been inspected by the dealer service center and confirmed that this is the issue that caused the problem. The dealer even suspected this was going to happen as they had foreknowledge of the issue occurring on other vehicles that had already been recalled for this issue. The only prior warning of this issue is that I had some misfires on the engine a few days before which is what prompted me to bring it in for service. The misfires temporarily illuminated the "check engine" light but then the light went back out again. I had no idea this minor issue would result in such a severe, catastrophic failure.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-09-28

But not for the Veloster, service department acknowledged identical part usage in Veloster and MDPS assembly is failing in the Veloster with same safety issues. But since no recall have been issued full cost of replacement passed to consumer. $5 dollar rubber coupler, +$500 labor.
ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-03
- VIN: KMHTC6AE4DU
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: One night I was driving on the highway and my check engine light came on. At first I thought it was weird because I had just gotten the car from a dealership three weeks prior. I pulled into a gas station and checked my oil which was low so I added some oil that I had bought. As I was driving home the car suddenly developed a tick and started to lose power. The turbo stopped working. I was pretty concerned about this so the next morning I decided to top off the oil and I decided to take the car into a shop. The first shop heard the engine knock and told me that my crankshaft might be going bad but I wanted a second opinion so I took it to a trusted shop who heard the engine knock and told me the engine would need to be replaced. I called the warranty company and they inspected it at the shop and said the engine would need to be torn down for diagnosis. I had to agree to pay for the shop to tear down the engine if it would not be covered. The shop found metal shavings in the oil pan. Once the engine was apart, they said that the rod bearing was bad. The car and engine are available for inspection.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-24
- VIN: KMHTC6AD8DU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The HVAC control knob overheated and burned out in my car. It scorched/charred and melted the plastic switch it was plugged into in the dash. It caused a strong burnt plastic, Smokey smell inside the car while I was driving. I thought the car was on fire at first. Thank goodness it wasn’t but it really could have started a fire in the dash of the car under the right conditions. I’ve read numerous accounts online of this same exact issue on this year/model, but no action has been taken by Hyundai to rectify this dangerous design flaw. I’ve also read that it can and usually happens again to the replacement control knob and plug. It’s absolute insanity to replace it with the exact same part knowing full well that it’s most likely going to do the same exact thing again. What if it does cause a fire in the dash the next time while I’m driving? It could possibly severely injure or kill me and any passenger in the car in addition to putting other drivers at risk from a mobile flaming inferno.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-07
- VIN: KMHTC6ADXDU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: Vehicle is burning through oil without having oil light engaged. Vehicle is going through two quart + of oil every 3 weeks. Just added 2 quarts of oil 3 weeks ago when the car would not accelerate past 5mph and rough idled (this turned out to be caused by a different issue still being diagnosed), I added the oil as dip stick showed no oil on the stick. Light did not come on. Took to independent mechanic this week who stated I had no oil in the vehicle. Can not go 3 month/3000 miles for an oil change or the engine would be damaged. Have taken the vehicle several times to Valvoline who indicate no oil with no oil pressure light on, each time. This has been constant for 2 years. Each mechanic shop states the GDI engines are burning through oil. No oil leaks have been detected. This issue could result in serious engine damage.

I decided to officially make a complaint because I saw that this vehicles and exact models from 2014-2016 where included but My year not ( 2013). I called the Hyundai and they told me that I needed to buy the unit and go fix it in a dealer. I found it unfair because is a defect of the car not something People can make to the car. The campaing nunber is: 16-01-070 from december 2016 ( and my car where not included) The problem is not the unit is the plug that cames from the car that connects to the unit that melts and gets burned.( but the unit is damaged due to this)

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-20
- VIN: KMHTC6AD7DU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Purchased the vehicle and a few weeks late received a recall letter (23V651000) about their ABS issue. They never did send us the recall letter regarding the known engine issue. Months later the engine completely seized up. We took it to a mechanic who told us to call Hyudai since the engine was well beyond repair. We called the Hyudai dealership in town and they explicitly told us their were NO ACTIVE RECALLS for this car. After finding out a replacement engine would cost over $10k we had no other option but to salvage the vehicle. Fast forward about a month and we received recall letter (service campaign 966) about a recall active since MARCH 2021 regarding engine sensor malfunction that could result in total engine loss if not addressed. Hyundai is refusing to take responsibility for not informing us about this recall during few months we owned the car. They also are not taking responsibility at the dealership level for telling us there were no active recalls (there are TWO active recalls that were present when we called.) Is there anything that NHTSA will or can help with regarding this issue. Hyundai very clearly dropped the ball on this issue and are refusing to be helpful or take responsibility. This could have been a VERY dangerous situation if the car was driving at speed - luckily the engine broke down when pulling out of the driveway...
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-30
- VIN: KMHTC6AE3DU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The climate control knob does not function properly on my car. I removed the climate control panel from my car and found metal parts of the knob to be black and burnt and plastic parts to be melted and disformed causing the part to malfunction. All that’s needs to be replaced to fix the problem is the knob itself on the climate control panel. However, the knob is not sold individually and you must buy the whole climate control panel which costs over $200. It also seems to pose a potential fire risk if it heats up to the point that parts are melting/burning

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-22
- VIN: KMHTC6AE5DU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: This complaint is regarding safety recall #23V651000 related to my 2013 Hyundai Veloster. In September of 2023, a potential problem with the ABS module was identified which could cause an engine compartment fire while driving or parked. It is now February, 2024, 5 months later and there is still no resolution. This is unacceptable. I am driving a vehicle which could result in personal property damage and/or personal injury or death. Being told to park the vehicle outdoors and away from structures is not a long term solution until the recall remedy is completed. How much longer am I, and others going to have to wait for a resolution to this issue?

It does smell like my car is smoking and I will have to physically roll my window down and/or poke my head out the window to make sure it’s not smoking. I’m checking my temperature gauge in my car to make sure it id within normal range. And when the check engine light comes on, sometimes it will come up and will blink for a few seconds and then disappear. Then I will go to O’Reilly’s or Advanced Auto Zone to get a reading the common codes that have come up were P0401, P0442,

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-02
- VIN: KMHTC6AD1DU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I am concerned with the notice of a recall which I received June 2023 concerning a possible electrical fault in the ABS module which could cause a fire in the engine compartment. There is NO fix available . I called my local Hyundai garage and the Hyundai corp office and they both told me the same thing and that is they do not have a fix and do not know when one will be available' I find this unacceptable and stalling by the Hyundai Company I am told that I should park the car away from the house as it might catch fire wether the car is running or not. After 8 months i can only suppose the Hyundai Company is ignoring the problem because it will cost them money I would be most grateful if you could light a fire under Hyundai, so to speak, so that they will solve this problem [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I purchased a 2013 Orange Turbo with only 14000 miles for a great price of less than $15,900, which is a significant discount from its original sticker price of $28000+. This car is fully loaded with features such as a moon roof and paddle shifters. Although the left side tires were worn out, I assumed it was due to the previous owner having some fun with the turbo. As an older individual, I should have opted for a car that sits a little higher up. Currently, I am getting an average of 26-28 mpg on regular gas. Overall, I am pleased with my purchase so far.
-
Almost a year in and I am still smiling behind the wheel. I'm 6'4 and I feel totally comfortable in this car. It also has great gas mileage! I am so happy with it and the Hyundai service.
-
I really like this car! I've had it since January and have already put about 10k miles on it. It's a very reliable and durable little car. Even when someone t-boned me going 40, the only damage it had was a little crack and scuff on the bumper. The backseat is also big enough to fit 2 car seats. The gas mileage is better than I expected too. I usually drive between 40-50 mph and I average 38-43 mpg. The highest mpg I've averaged was 51.2 with the Eco boost on. I would definitely recommend this car to a friend. I think they should make it in a hybrid because it would get outstanding gas mileage. Also, it turns heads when I pull up to lights and people are surprised it's my car and not my parents' because of my age!
-
We recently traded in our 2013 Veloster Turbo Auto with almost 88,000 miles and I wanted to share our positive experience with it. We took great care of it with regular maintenance and it never gave us any issues beyond that. It's a fun car to drive, great on gas mileage, and we never had any problems with it. If you don't mind the limited space, you'll definitely enjoy this vehicle. We only traded it in because we needed a bigger car that could accommodate passengers in the back. Overall, it's a great car!
-
My husband and I love this car! It's been a while since we've driven a car that's actually fun to drive, especially after driving SUVs for the past ten years. We get loads of compliments on our white car and it's been a great way for us to save on gas costs while driving our son to tennis tournaments around the state. The trunk space is more than enough to hold all of our baggage and our son's tennis gear. However, it's important to note that if you're driving on unpaved roads, this car may not be the best option as it sits quite low to the ground and you'll feel any bumps in the road. We would definitely consider purchasing another one in the future, especially the turbo version which would be even more fun than our current 'zippy' car. It's worth mentioning that my husband, who is 6'2, has ample headspace and our son, who is 5'11, fits comfortably in the backseat. The only downside our son has mentioned is getting in and out of the car, but my husband and I view it as a little extra exercise in our day.

Hi there! It's great to hear that you've been enjoying your vehicle for almost 2 years now. It's impressive that it comes with all the amenities you need, like a moon roof, bluetooth, steering wheel controls, usb port, auxiliary port, and faux leather w/ mesh seats. The sporty styling is a nice touch, and the third door definitely adds convenience compared to a conventional 2 door coup/hatchback. Plus, at only 168 inches long, finding parking is a breeze, which is especially important in Brooklyn these days. When you fold the seats down, there's ample cargo room too! Overall, it's a great value. However, we understand that the ride can be a bit stiff and there's a design flaw that causes leakage onto the speakers when you open the windows in the rain. But don't worry, we're sure you'll still enjoy your vehicle for many more years to come!

The Veloster is a stylish and unique car that is sure to turn heads, much like the Mini Cooper did when it was re-released in the early 2000s. Its next-generation interior is both fun and comfortable to own. While it may not be love at first sight, you will certainly like it. Although its performance and handling may not be on par with the Mini Cooper, the Veloster's panoramic sunroof, comfortable seats, and great sound system make it an enjoyable ride. With some improvements in performance and handling, this car could be a real game-changer. Hyundai has the potential to make this happen, so watch this space!

If you're looking for a sporty ride, the turbo model is definitely an option to consider. However, it's worth noting that the 18Add the cheap plastic interior, and you have a symphony of rattles, shakes, and tire noise. You may instinctively reach for the volume knob on your radio, but unfortunately, the volume leveling option doesn't work at all.

Based on my analysis, it appears that the vehicle in question is experiencing acceleration issues. The car is currently in the shop for repairs after it stopped while attempting to accelerate and pass on a two-lane highway. It is important to address this issue as it poses a potential safety hazard. While the car is comfortable and visually appealing, it is imperative to prioritize safety and functionality. It is recommended to explore options for selling or trading the vehicle, as there may be a design flaw with the transmission that needs to be addressed. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Update: Unfortunately, after receiving an estimate of $8000 from the dealer to fix it, this car is still sitting in my garage while I pay off the note for an undriveable car. However, I have found a silver lining and now use it to put my wet umbrella on while it dries. It may be the most expensive umbrella dryer ever, but at least it serves a purpose. It's important to note that when purchasing this car used, the manufacturer's warranty is severely reduced. Within just three months of the warranty expiring, at 65,000 miles, the car started falling apart. The first turbo booster failed, costing $3000, of which Hyundai paid part (which would have been fully covered under warranty). Unfortunately, I had to pay $1800. Four weeks later, the turbo charger failed again while I was on vacation, resulting in a $550 towing charge to get it to the dealer, $35 per day for a rental car, and $180 so far for diagnostic work. However, I have been notified that the turbo charger replacement will be covered by parts warranty. Although, whatever caused the turbo charger to fail will all be on me. I have decided to send the car to the Junk Yard and will have to make two car payments for the next year until I pay off the Nasty Veloster. Please learn from my mistake and stay away from this car!
