The Ford EcoSport (pronounced Eh-koh-sport) is a subcompact crossover SUV (B-segment) manufactured by Ford between 2003 and 2023.

The first-generation model was developed and built in Brazil by Ford Brazil since 2003, at the Camaçari plant. The second-generation model was launched in 2012, which was assembled in factories in India, Thailand, Russia and Romania. The vehicle entered the North American market for the first time in 2018, until its discontinuation after the 2022 model year. Throughout its existence, the EcoSport shares its platform with the Fiesta.

First generation (BV226; 2003)

The first generation EcoSport was designed by Ford Brazil Development Center under the program code BV226, and the codename "Amazon Project". It is based on the European Fiesta and Fusion MPV, sharing the same Ford B3 platform.

The EcoSport became one of Ford's best-seller models in Brazil, consistently appearing on the twenty best selling vehicles. It was also popular in Argentina, Venezuela, and Mexico. Its main competitors were the Fiat Palio Adventure and Volkswagen CrossFox. In 2011, cumulative sales reached 700,000.

Common 2021 Ford Ecosport problems

The Ford EcoSport, a subcompact crossover SUV, has been known to have several common problems across various model years. While the 2021 Ford EcoSport has been subject to a number of complaints and concerns, let's discuss the common problems found in the EcoSport based on complaints from owners:

  • Oil Pump Failure: The 1.0-liter turbocharged engine in the EcoSport has been reported to have oil pump failures, which can lead to total engine failure. This issue is more prevalent in the 2018-2021 models, affecting roughly 240,000 units. The oil pump failure can cause bearing failure, resulting in engine damage.
  • Gearbox Problems: PowerShift (DCT) Dual-Clutch gearboxes in older second-generation Ford EcoSports (2012-2017) were prone to severe breakdowns. These issues led to recalls and technical service bulletins from Ford. The newer automatic gearboxes (torque converter) are considered more reliable.
  • Electrical System Issues: Owners have reported issues with the electrical system, such as the battery draining quickly, even when the vehicle is not in use. This has led to problems starting the vehicle and even complete battery failure in some cases. Ford has issued technical service bulletins related to battery drain issues, including one in February 2021 advising dealers to update the vehicle’s software to address the problem.
  • Safety Feature Concerns: EcoSport owners have reported concerns about the vehicle's safety features, including issues with the blind spot monitoring system. Some owners have reported that the system fails to detect vehicles in certain situations, creating a safety risk.
  • Sticky Brakes: Several owners have reported sticky or grinding brake pads, particularly in the 2018 model. Potential causes include low-quality/damaged brake pads and worn brake rotors.
  • Jerky Transmission: Another common complaint about the EcoSport is its jerky transmission, especially when coming from a stop. This can lead to issues with gear changes and acceleration. Possible causes include low transmission fluid, a faulty solenoid, and worn transmission bands.
  • Doors Won't Lock: A few users have reported that EcoSport doors wouldn't lock whenever it's raining or wet or during the colder months. Potential causes include faulty lock actuators, a blown fuse, or a bad lock relay switch.
  • Shuddering Issues: Some owners have reported that their EcoSport vehicles experienced shuddering and jerking while driving, particularly during acceleration or when shifting gears. This issue could be caused by a faulty clutch or other transmission components.
  • Low MPG: Most used Ford EcoSport year models have been reported to have poor MPG, so this is something to look out for if fuel efficiency plays a significant role in your decision.

In summary, the Ford EcoSport has several common problems, including oil pump failure, gearbox issues, electrical system problems, safety feature concerns, sticky brakes, jerky transmission, doors not locking, shuddering issues, and low MPG. If you own a 2021 Ford EcoSport and are experiencing any issues or concerns, it is important to take your vehicle back to the Ford Dealer for repairs and to keep records of the repairs. If your EcoSport has been back to the dealer multiple times for repairs that remain a problem, you may want to consult with a lemon law attorney to review your options.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-05
  • VIN: MAJ3S2GE2MC
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Was driving vehicle and lost power. Had vehicle towed to Ford dealership. Received email stating vehicle experienced engine failure. Also received a recall attachment and told the engine and turbo buster needed replaced. Was told it would be covered under warranty. Next day received call from dealership stating there were not going to cover engine under recall and I would need to pay almost $9,000 for a new engine. The vehicle is a 2021 ford ecosport with under 10,000 miles. When I contacted ford corp, they told me varied stories. First rep. Acknowledge the recall and then said it was up to the dealership to honor it. Second time I called ford corp. the rep said that there was no fix and only a work around and that my paying for the engine replacement was a work around the dealerships had come up with. When I reached back out to the dealership, they told me they had spoken with ford and was instructed to complete more diagnostics, which would cost me out of pocket for the diagnostics approximately $1400.00. I contacted another dealership and was told it would be two month before they could even look at it, due to the number of vehicles currently at their dealership waiting for engine replacements. I contacted ford corp again and was told there was a buy back option. I have just been waiting, when I spoke with the rep in the buyback department (9/25/24) she said it would be another 5 days and she would call me again. I asked about rental vehicles, she said that was up to the dealerships or that I could use a rental company like enterprise. I let her know that to rent a vehicle until the first quarter of 2025, when ford is supposed to have a fix for the vehicle would cost me close to, if not over $18,000 in rental fees. She said if she heard of ford starting a program to reimburse rental fees she would let me know. I asked if she would document the expected rental notes in the case.

SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-30
  • VIN: MAJ3S2FE7MC
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: ENGINE OIL PUMP DRIVE BELT TENSIONER ARM FRACTURED My vehicle has been in the service department since June 30st, following a breakdown during a trip from Odessa, Texas to California. The vehicle malfunctioned in California, approximately a 24-hour drive from our home. Upon investigation, I learned that the part responsible for the breakdown was already subject to a recall. Despite waiting for several days at a hotel near the dealership, I was not provided with a long-term rental. Instead, I was given a Lyft to the nearest airport to continue my trip. I also had to cover the costs of a rental car to return to Texas. Additionally, the faulty part has no estimated delivery date, leaving the vehicle unrepaired for an indefinite period. I foresee potential issues when it comes time to retrieve the vehicle, given the distance involved. Given the extended downtime and the out-of-pocket costs incurred, what are my options for resolving this situation, including rental reimbursement, vehicle pickup, or any other possible recourse?

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-01
  • VIN: MAJ3S2FEXMC
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I started having issues with my 2021 Ford Ecosport the last week of December 2023. My engine completely stalled out [XXX]. I discovered that there was a recall (23s64) on my vehicle and immediately took my car into Elk Grove Ford for recall repairs 1/2/24. I was told that I was too early for the recall and would have to wait between April and August of 2024 for repairs. Ford would not cover the cost of my first few months in a rental due to the "recall being too early" even though my car has been undrivable due to the recall. Now here we are in September, and I am now being told I have to wait for repairs "the first quarter of 2025" meaning Elk Grove Ford would have had my car for over 1 year. This is ridiculous. I have a car note and insurance that I am still responsible for even though I do not have possession of my car, and it is undrivable. I am being told that Ford cannot do anything besides wait for parts which is insane. I was told by service provider Mike at Elk Grove Ford that they have over 20 cars just at their location for the same recall and they are just holding everyone's vehicles until next year! I am a [XXX], and this has been so stressful to all of us. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Negative 2021 Ford Ecosport car reviews

  1. Axel Sipes 2025-01-08

I am confidently enacting the Ohio Lemon Law for this car, which I have owned since November 2019. Despite having had two transmissions fully rebuilt in the past year, the car remains unreliable and unsuitable for purchase. I strongly advise against buying it, as it is likely to cause significant inconvenience and legal issues.

  2. Arvid Toy 2024-11-20

After receiving notice of the recall about the engine oil pump tensioner arm, it broke on my 2020 Ford EcoSport SE. Despite the notice stating that the vehicle is safe to drive, it is now undrivable. However, I am confident that Ford will take responsibility for this issue and provide a solution. I have been in contact with them and they are working on a resolution. I appreciate their efforts and look forward to a positive outcome. Thank you.

  3. Barrett Bergnaum 2024-11-15

It's been about a year since we got this car for my daughter, and it's only been driven for 10,000KM. Unfortunately, we've had to take it to the shop twice already due to some electrical issues. We thought the ecosport might be a better value than our Escape Titanium in terms of gas consumption, so we traded it in. However, it turned out to be a big mistake and we can't wait to get out of this lease.

We recently purchased the SES with a 4-cylinder AWD and it is a very nice looking vehicle. Although my spouse was initially drawn to the compact SUV's appearance, we have found that the 166 horsepower engine can feel a bit weak and the ride can be rough. Additionally, the seats are not very comfortable for long rides. Overall, we are a bit disappointed. However, we are hopeful that it will last longer without any major repairs.

Fortunately, this was only a one week rental. Despite reserving a mid-size SUV, the vehicle provided did not meet our expectations. It was difficult to fit even one luggage and three backpacks. The ride was uncomfortable due to its stiffness and poor pick up. In fact, my son had to sit in the front passenger seat because his legs would not fit in the back seat, and he is only 5'8

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 2020 Ecosport Titanium AWD that I bought last fall. It had 10000kms on it and was a dealer service vehicle, so I got it at a great discounted price. Since then, I've driven it for an additional 5500kms without any issues. The only minor complaint I have is that the gas tank is a bit small, so I find myself filling it up more often than I'd like. Additionally, there's a bit of noise coming from the rear end, especially on the passenger side, so I plan to have it checked out. Overall, it's been a great car for me, especially in the snow and on the highway. I drive about 500kms a week and it handles it like a champ. Thanks for listening!

Great on icy/slick roads. The front bucket seats are comfortable, but the back is not very spacious. It also comes with built-in USB ports, heated seats, multi-color cargo lighting, and a leather interior.

I recently took a trip in a 2021 model s 4x4 and was really impressed with the ride and comfort. As someone who is 6 foot 7, I was pleased to find that I fit just fine. The 4x4 performed exceptionally well on a mountain pass, with great ground clearance and plenty of power to pull itself over rocks and large ruts.
