2023 Mazda Cx-5 problems
The Mazda CX-5 is a compact crossover SUV produced by Mazda since 2012. A successor to both the Tribute and the slightly larger CX-7, it is Mazda's first model to feature the "Kodo" design language and the first model to be fully developed with a range of technologies branded as Skyactiv, including a rigid, lightweight platform combined with a series of engines and transmissions to reduce emissions and fuel consumption.
Since 2019, the CX-5 is positioned above the smaller CX-30. As of 2022, depending on the region, the CX-5 is positioned right below the larger CX-50, CX-60 or the CX-8 within Mazda's crossover SUV line-up.
The CX-5 has been the worldwide best-selling model offered by the brand every year since 2014, with record sales in 2019 when 444,262 units were sold globally. As of March 2022, cumulative sales of the CX-5 has reached around 3.5 million vehicles.

Common 2023 Mazda Cx-5 problems
The 2023 Mazda CX-5 has been reported to have several issues by its owners, with the most common problems being related to the engine, navigation system, and automatic braking system.
Engine problems are the most frequently reported issues with the 2023 Mazda CX-5, with some owners experiencing a lack of power and engine lights turning on. This issue may be due to the engine's calibration or the use of regular fuel instead of premium fuel, which can affect the car's performance. However, some owners have reported that the engine's performance is adequate with regular fuel.
Navigation system issues are also common, with some owners reporting that the navigation view shows a blue field instead of the map while driving. This issue can be distracting and may require a software update or a visit to the dealership for repair.
The automatic braking system has also been reported to cause issues, with some owners experiencing unexpected braking while driving. This issue can be dangerous, especially if it occurs while driving at high speeds or in heavy traffic. The dealership has been unable to find a cause for this issue, and it is unclear whether it is a hardware or software problem.
In addition to these issues, some owners have reported problems with the windshield wipers, which may start going slow, then fast, then slow again during light rain. This issue can be caused by debris on the windshield or a malfunctioning sensor, and it may require a visit to the dealership for repair.
Finally, some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, which uses a dial instead of a touchscreen for selection. This system can be difficult to use, especially when driving, and may require more attention than a touchscreen system.
Overall, while the 2023 Mazda CX-5 is a popular and well-regarded vehicle, it is not without its issues. Owners have reported problems with the engine, navigation system, automatic braking system, windshield wipers, and infotainment system. These issues can be frustrating and potentially dangerous, and they may require visits to the dealership for repair. However, many owners have reported that the car is otherwise reliable and enjoyable to drive.
Are there any known problems in a Mazda CX-5?
We recommend staying away from the 2014 and 2016 Mazda CX-5. These recorded more complaints compared to the 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 model years. The most common complaints cover electrical problems, engine problems, interior accessories, and issues with the lights.
What is the predicted reliability of the 2023 Mazda CX-5?
The 2023 Mazda CX-5 has a predicted reliability score of 82 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average, and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.

Is the new Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes, the 2024 CX-5 is an excellent compact SUV. For an accessible starting price, it offers a finely tuned and relatively powerful engine, top-of-the-class driving dynamics and a well-designed interior.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-09
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JM3KFBCMXP0
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Was driving up [XXX] when simultaneously my dash board lit up with errors and malfunctions, my interior lights started flickering and my steering wheel and brakes locked. Unable to control the vehicle I gripped the wheel for dear life praying as it veered left. The 2023 CX 5 with only 18K struck the guard rail and went black on the inside and out. Only then was I able to counter the ricochet of the impact by redirecting the vehicle back on the grass to avoid getting smacked by 2 tractor trailers. SMH, I really almost died and now have to fight with my insurance to prove to them this is a real issue with these vehicle malfunctioning. I hope this helps someone and possibly save a life(s) - toyota_would_never, Greensboro, US INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-09
- VIN: JM3KFBDM7P0
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: When the vehicle light position is on Off at night the daytime running lights on the front of the vehicle come on which appear to be the same as the normal headlights, but the back lights are completely out. The brake lights work, but the back tail lights and licence plate light are out. The car's light switch is on the turn signal arm and can be moved inadvertently when using the turn signal. At this point you assume you have all around vehicle lights because the front headlights are on which are really the Day TIme Running Lights (DTRL). The DTRL are as bright as the normal headlights at night. This gives you the false impression that all of the outside vehicle lights are on. When this happens you are driving with no back vehicle lights which is a major saftey issue.
VISIBILITY/WIPER,VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-04
- VIN: JM3KFBCM8P0
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER,VISIBILITY
- Summary: The driver's side mirror tends to vibrate or shake more than the passenger side mirror, especially at speeds above 50-60 mph or in windy conditions. It has been a common complaint among Mazda owners for quite a while, and it seems to be a design flaw that Mazda has not yet addressed with a permanent solution.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-30
- VIN: JM3KFBAY3P0
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: I love this car, but it has a bad habit, the vehicle accelerates on its own. If you take your foot off the gas, the car will intermittently lurch, almost jump forward. I’ve learned to deal with this by simply keeping a strong push on the break, but it is definitely is an issue. Another issue I’m having is the back lift gate. I’ve been told that the sensors are on each side of the gate and perhaps when drying the vehicle, I touch them they run along each side of the liftgate fully visible. I have 17,000 miles on my car right now and when the lift gate opens closes it stops halfway and it beeps. I then have to push it down to close. I took it to the dealer and they say it will cost me if they have to check the sensors. This is extremely annoying to have an automatic lift gate, and I have to push it down myself.
VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-27
- VIN: JM3KFBCM5P0
- Components: VISIBILITY
- Summary: The contact owns a 2023 Mazda CX-5. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked, she entered the vehicle and noticed that the sunroof glass had exploded. The contact stated that she inspected the vehicle but could not determine the cause of the failure. The contact stated that the shade guard was closed at the time of the failure. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the contact was informed that the vehicle could not be serviced because a rock had probably struck the sunroof. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The contact was awaiting an email from the manufacturer. The failure mileage was approximately 16,127.
POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-23
- VIN: JM3KFBDM4P0
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: Slowly and cautiously entered parking lot of a small strip mall. Proceeded to a parking space located in between two parked vehicles.Maneuvering into parking space I removed foot from gas pedal toward the break pedal; before foot made contact with break pedal the vehicle accelerated on its own surging over the cement parking bumper, over bushes, through the grass, down the curb and into the street. I jammed on the breaks. Lifting foot from break pedal I did not touch the gas pedal in fear the surge might happened again. Instead I allowed the vehicle to coast as I guided vehicle to the curb. In all the commotion, while trying to control vehicle safely I noticed the dashboard transmission indicator lights flash from park to drive to neutral. Safety issues for me and family at risk because we had no control over the acceleration of the vehicle.
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-14
- VIN: JM3KFBBM1P0
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: I purchased a brand new 2023 Mazda Cx-5 on December 2022 from Daytona Mazda. The car has been great up until 34,310 miles when I noticed vibration in the steering wheel. I take the car to Sport Mazda North in Longwood Fl. They checked the brakes and rotors and tires. My brakes and rotors are fine. They stated my tires have cupping. They suggested a wheel balance to slow down the cupping process and they suggested and alignment as well. But that I would need to replace the tires if I wanted that cupping to be gone. I buy new tires and have them installed by Pep Boys because I was tired it the vibration. I have them check the alignment while I was there and the alignment came out great with all the numbers in the green. The tires still had 7/32nd left on the tires so that’s about 70% of tread left. The dealership downer warranty the tires and Yokohama won’t warranty them. They stated i needed to send the tires back. I let the rep know that ok so you wanted me to risk my safety to send those tires back to you to examine them. I let the rep know that I don’t have those tires as I had new tires put on on [XXX]. I am trying to get compensated for the new tires I had to buy because of a premature issue with the OEM tires. STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-24
- VIN: JM3KFBXY6P0
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: While I was driving I heard an extremely loud noise (like fireworks). I slightly opened the sun roof cover and saw shards of glass. I pulled over to inspect further and realized that my sun roof glass had exploded! I saw no signs of anything (particularly rocks) that may have caused it. I called the dealer, and they had me bring it in. They have ordered a new sunroof, and gave me a loaner car. Luckily I did not have the inside cover open, or the glass would have shattered all over the inside of my car.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

- Crash: 1
- VIN: JM3KFBCM2P0

- Summary: New 2023 Mazda CX5. We have experienced 2 Unintended Sudden Acceleration episodes. The most recent one was while backing down our driveway, the car suddenly accelerated when the brake was applied causing considerable damage to the car and house. Our front porch camera caught the entire episode showing that the brake lights were in fact on. Mazda needs to take responsibility and recall these vehicles to find out what is going on, as there are numerous other similar complaints for this car on this site and others.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-05
- VIN: JM3KFBEM4P0
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I bought a new Premium Plus CX-5 in April of this year. Since I bought the car, occasionally I hear a sharp click or snap from the dashboard, particularly when it's warm outside and I have the AC on. I have video footage of the sound multiple times, but Mazda says they cannot replicate it. It sounds like a rock hitting the windshield type sound, but it's electronic and inside the car. Multiple Mazda dealerships in So Cal confirmed the noise. It is because the vents are chrome, aka plastic wrapped in thin metal. When the car cools, these will snap but not break / do any damage. This has been confirmed by at least 5 others on the internet. Please see this thread: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-03
- VIN: JM3KFBCM0P0
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: The sunroof spontaneously exploded outward while my wife was driving on the interstate. She was not near other vehicles or under an overpass for flying debris. We have had the vehicle for only 9 months and she works from home so it is kept in a garage for the majority of its life. It has not encountered any hail damage either. The sun shade was closed thankfully so my wife was fine but the anxiety it has caused her is immeasurable. This is a common occurrence as can be seen by any Google search indicating many people experiencing this issue. Most auto makers are not accepting responsibility for defects in manufacturing. The NHTSA has a duty to keep people safe and hold auto makers accountable for problems they are manufacturing. Exploding sunroofs are not safe and it is a major problem in the industry. There are countless testimonials and legal action being taken about this issue.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-26
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JM3KFBEM5P0
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: At 2:00 on a clear afternoon I was slowly coasting into a right hand turn into a parking space, and lightly tapping the brake to finalize the stop, when the car accelerated HARD forward over a curb and a sidewalk into the brick wall of a building. Airbag was deployed. My injuries were a nasty wrist contusion and bloody gashes where the airbag "door" deployed and I also had complete seatbelt brusing on my throat, chest and across my abdomen. This after traveling a mere 7-8 feet. At the time I was very shaken up and incredulous that such a thing could have happened logically, and conceded that perhaps I had made a mistake somehow. As I settled down later I became dubious, especially when I got behind the wheel of my rental car and 100% when I sat in my actual car at the wrecking yard. I am crystal clear I was depressing just the brake. Even if I had accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake (I did not) it would not have accelerated to the degree that it did. I am now scared of my car and am just hoping it is declared totaled by my insurance so I don't have to drive it again - any car but that one.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-21
- VIN: JM3KFBDM3P0
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Mazda CX-5 Premium Between May and September this year, the MyMazda app has alerted me two times that the oil level was low. I manually checked and it was indeed low. The first time I brought it to a Firestone service center to have it checked and they verified that the level was down considerably to the bottom dot on the stick. They said to bring it to the dealer. I brought it to the dealer and they said they could not find any leaks and to come back in 1000 miles. I did that and they only checked the dipstick to make sure the level was fine and sent me on my way. The same exact thing happened again a week ago and I topped off the oil then made an appointment. The dealer said that I should not have done that and now they could not verify for themselves that the oil was in fact low. They disregarded the message that the MyMazda app sent me and did not care that I documented and took photos of the dipstick. They had to see it for themselves. They said to come back 1000 miles and not add oil if it is low. I said to the representative at the dealer that I had seen mentions about high oil consumption online and they stated it was only turbo models. I bought my car October 2022 and it has had this oil issue twice in 20,000 miles. That is scary and unacceptable.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

- Summary: Brand new 2023 Mazda CX-5 with 150 miles on it experienced unintended acceleration while braking. Pulled into a parking spot with my foot on the brakes but the car didn't stop & even accelerated over a sidewalk and into a building. I experienced a bruise from the seatbelt. Airbags did not deploy. Someone could have been killed if they had been on the sidewalk. Car is currently at an auto body shop to fix the cosmetic damages, and once released, will have the car towed to our local Mazda dealership/service center to get the car inspected. In doing research on NHTSA's website, at least 4 vehicles (2-2023 Mazda CX-5s and 2-2023 Mazda CX-30s) have experienced this issue. Mazda needs to recall these vehicles and investigate.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

- VIN: JM3KFBCM6P0
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: I was driving my new 2023 Mazda CX5 with approximately 1,300 miles in the center lane of a divided highway of the suburbs just north of New York City. I was driving with all windows closed, A/C turned on and the weather was clear, hot and sunny. Without any warning there was a loud and abrupt explosion from within the vehicle. As I looked in my rear view mirror I saw glass blowing in the wind behind me. I suddenly detected wind blowing above my head and realized my sunroof had most likely been the glass I saw behind me. I kept the sunshade closed with one hand until I could safely pull over to look. I did not suspect any road debris to have caused the breaking of the glass and my inspection did not reveal any other damage or possible outside causes. This even appeared to have been spontaneous and without warning. I feel that this incident could have been a lot worse had the sunshade been open, most likely blowing little pieces of glass into my eyes while driving at highway speeds in a center lane. I also fear that this could have been a hazard to my children passengers if they were in the back seat at the time it happened. I notified my Mazda dealership at the earliest possible moment and they asked to inspect it. After inspection, a regional service manager advised that this type of incident has been heard of but only in southern warmer states and typically on hot sunny days when the air conditioning is on inside the vehicle. Apparently the temperature difference coupled with cabin pressure and any sort of defects in the glass can make the glass explode upward. Date/time of incident 6/11/23 @ 5pm est. Date of repair by dealership: 6/15/23
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-28
- VIN: JM3KFBCM9P0
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Brakes are very poor, car lurches forward at stop lights and you have to stomp the brake pedal to prevent running into the car in front of you.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-18
- VIN: JM3KFBDM3P0
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The power liftgate on the 2023 Mazda CX-5 SUV closes with sufficient force that the vehicle owner's manual warns of possible serious injury or even death, and cautions the operator to be sure that people or objects are not in the way of closure. However, the actual design of the overall system permits accidental closure by way of the key fob even when the operator is out of sight of the vehicle. This effectively renders the warnings meaningless, and disregards the safety of people or objects that might be in the way. The vehicle electronics/computer system uses dual purpose switches in or on the vehicle to activate the liftgate; if closed, a press of the switch will unlock and open it, and if open, the same switch will close and lock it. The system also provides the same feature with an exposed, raised button on the key fob which can easily be accidentally pressed to activate closure. Who then assumes liability for the possible resulting tragedy? During my first month of ownership (April 2023), I have experienced the liftgate opening by accident at least twice and it obviously could have been both opened and closed numerous times by accident totally without my knowledge. In a similar fashion, I have experienced the susceptibility of the other fob switches to accidental activation; the car has been locked by accident as least once, and the horn accidentally activated at least three times when I have been inside the house while the car is out of sight in the garage and the key fob was in my pocket. I am obviously making the reasonable assumption that accidental pressure on the various fob switches is the cause for activation. The attached PDF document describes in more detail some of the hazards posed by the existing design, and possibly applies to other car makes and models
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-01
- VIN: JM3KFBEM0P0
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: 4 month old car and brakes are rusted and rotor is warped. The car is shaky and rear right side grinder. Mechanic said it was safe to drive and that it was a “user error” for being to hard on the brakes. They said they inspected the vehicle and could not determine the “brown liquid” was. They cleaned what I assume was rust and claimed it was safe to drive again. Two weeks and three drives later it is grinding again, smelling smoky, and shaking. I feel unsafe driving the car. There were no warnings or messages when the symptoms first appeared. The car is available for inspection upon request. Although it has not directly put anyone at risk yet, I believe it is a matter of time before myself or someone else gets injured.

Traded a Honda CRV for this CX5. This SUV is so much fun to drive and we're still getting excellent gas mileage even with AWD. The interior is very quiet and the fit and finish is phenomenal, putting the CRV to shame. After 7 months of owning it, we're still enjoying the great gas mileage and the fun driving experience.

I've only had my new CX-5 for 3 days but I absolutely love everything about it. It rides really nicely and inside it's super comfortable -- there's plenty of room and the technology is great and easy to use. I'm so glad I made the switch from GM (ending a 30 year relationship) and went with Mazda.

Welcome back from your trip to New England! We flew into Logan Airport and had reserved a mid-sized SUV from Budget. Unfortunately, when we got to the counter, we were told that our car was not available. However, the staff was able to offer us a Mazda CX-5 instead. Although it was a compact SUV, we were able to make it work. The infotainment system was a bit tricky to figure out, but we eventually got the hang of it. The only downside was that the seats were a bit uncomfortable for longer drives. Overall, it was a good experience, but we may consider other options for our next trip. Thank you, Budget, for your help in making our trip possible!

I've been driving this car for 10 days now and I must say, I'm looking forward to returning it. The gas mileage averages at 20, which is quite low. On the highway, I only managed to get 22mph due to the windy conditions, which made me feel like Mary Poppins! I tried to pair my phone with the car, but it wasn't an easy task (as the salesman had promised) and it disappeared. Unfortunately, it only works with Apple Play, so if you have an Android, you might have some trouble. The basic model screen controls are quite awkward and it's hard to play music and navigate at the same time since the controls have to be turned one by one. Although some safety features are nice, those are the only positive comments I have.
Devonte Howell 2024-09-01
I've been driving the CX-5 (red) for 2 months now. While there are a few things that could be improved, overall it's been a decent experience. The paint and carpet in the cabin could be better quality, but it's not a deal breaker. I've noticed some chipping on the paint, but it's nothing major. The carpet is a bit difficult to clean, but it's not a big issue. The entertainment controls could be more user-friendly, and the auto-sensing rain wipers could use some improvement. The climate controls are a bit quirky, but they get the job done. The engine can be a bit noisy when it first starts up, but it's not a major concern. Overall, I'm satisfied with my purchase, but if I had to do it over again, I might consider a Subaru or Toyota.

I am not satisfied with my car. Although I have had it for just over a month, I would prefer to return it. The technology is outdated and lacks features that I am accustomed to, such as Bluetooth, touchscreen, and remote start on the keyfob. Instead of a touchscreen, there is a little turn dial knob from the eighties that you have to use to switch between functions. The remote start is on an app and takes at least a minute or two to work, even if you are standing right by the car. I wish the remote start was on the key fob. Additionally, the reminder to put on your seat belt is quite loud and gives me a headache. This vehicle does not have Bluetooth, which I find surprising since I believe all vehicles should have wireless charging and Bluetooth as standard features. If you are looking for a vehicle with a full touchscreen, Bluetooth, and a remote start that you can hold in your hand, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

I had a negative experience with the Mazda CX5. The car felt shaky while driving, which made it uncomfortable. I have decided to trade it in for a Toyota or Honda, which I believe will be a better fit for me. I hope my experience can help others make an informed decision when choosing a car.
