The first-generation RX 300, fitted with a 3.0-liter V6 engine, began sales in 1998. The Japanese market Harrier released in 1997 also offered a 2.2-liter inline-four, later uprated to 2.4 liters. The second-generation RX 300 (3.0-liter V6) and RX 330 (3.3-liter V6) models went on sale in 2003, with both variants supplanted by the more powerful RX 350 (3.5-liter V6) in 2006. Like the previous series, a 2.4-liter inline-four engine was sold alongside the 3.0-liter V6 in the Japanese market Harrier. In 2005, a hybridized gasoline-electric version of the 3.3-liter second-generation model was made available as the RX 400h in export markets and as the Harrier Hybrid in Japan. For the third generation released in 2009, both RX 350 (3.5-liter V6) and RX 450h (3.5-liter V6 hybrid) models were initially offered, with an entry-level RX 270 (2.7-liter inline-four) offered by Lexus in some Asian markets, including in Japan, since 2010. Since the release of the third generation, Japanese sales have occurred under the RX name as opposed to Harrier as had been the case previously. In the fourth generation, a turbocharged (2.0-liter inline-four) RX 200t/300 model was introduced to replace the previous 2.7-liter unit.
The RX has been assembled at Toyota Motor Kyushu since launch. The RX and RX Hybrid were the first Lexus models to be built outside Japan, with North American market versions produced at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada plant in Cambridge, Ontario beginning 2003 (RX) and expanded in 2014 (RX Hybrid). Hybrid transaxles are built at the Kokura plant in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka since 2009.

- Summary: This vehicle seems to have a well-documented problem with water intrusion that damages the ECU and hybrid battery. The 2006 and 2007 RX400h has the HV battery located under the seat, which is the low spot in the rear section of the car. If water is spilled or the body has a water leak, the water will pool at the center of the battery. Lexus considered this, and added a drain under the battery, but the drain has a filter, presumably to keep insects out, and the filter is easily clogged. This, coupled with a pattern problem of split body seams near the rear hatch strut mount causing a water leak in the rear of the car, has created isolation faults in many of the RX400h SUVs. The condition presents as warnings on the instrument cluster and a no-start condition where the vehicle is inoperable. A search for "lexus ECU water intrusion" brings up my vehicle's exact model and year so this is well-documented.

ONCE RESTARTED, THE VEHICLE DROVE NORMALLY; HOWEVER, THE FAILURES RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TREASURE COAST LEXUS (LOCATED AT 5121 US-1, FORT PIERCE, FL 34982, (772) 460-0000) WHERE THE TECHNICIAN CLEANED THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR, CLEARED THE FAILURE CODES, AND TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE IN CHECK MODE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OPERATING AS EXPECTED. THE DEALER SWAPPED THE CIRCUIT OPEN RELAY WITH THE IGNITION RELAY TO ELIMINATE THE RELAY AS THE FAILURE. THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR REMAINED ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V396000 (HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER APPROXIMATELY FOUR TIMES FOR THE SAME FAILURES, BUT THERE WAS NO RESOLUTION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES AND PROVIDED A CASE NUMBER. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 146,000.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2006 Lexus Rx400h.

- Components: HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM: INVERTER
- Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2006-2010 Highlander hybrid vehicles manufactured February 16, 2005, through July 29, 2010; and model year 2006-2008 Lexus RX400h vehicles manufactured February 23, 2005, through December 2, 2008. The Intelligent Power Module (IPM) inside the inverter module may contain transistors that have higher operating temperatures than the solder can support and the transistors may be heat damaged by the solder. If this occurs, various warning lamps, including the malfunction indicator lamp, slip indicator light, brake system warning light, and master warning light, will be illuminated on the instrument panel.
- Consequence: The vehicle may enter a fail-safe/limp-home mode that limits the drivability of the vehicle. It is possible that the hybrid system will shut down while the vehicle is being driven, causing the vehicle to stall unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the IPM free of charge. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331. Vehicles that had their IPM replaced under recall 11V-342 are not affected by this campaign.

IF THE ADHESIVE IS INSUFFICIENT, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE OUTER RING MAY BECOME MISALIGNED AND IT MAY NOT PROPERLY ROTATE WITH THE INNER RING, CAUSING NOISE AND/OR ILLUMINATION OF THE BATTERY DISCHARGE INDICATOR LIGHT.
- Consequence: IN SOME CASES, THE BELT FOR THE POWER STEERING PUMP MAY BECOME DETACHED FROM THE PULLEY WHICH COULD RESULT IN A LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND A SUDDEN INCREASE IN STEERING EFFORT, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

I've only had this car for about 3 weeks, but I'm already in love with it! As someone who has owned several domestic SUVs and cars, I can confidently say that this Lexus is the ultimate SUV. It's incredibly comfortable to drive on long trips, and it handles like a dream. The cabin is also impressively quiet, and the interior quality is top-notch. Plus, the mileage is great for a vehicle this size - 28 highway and 35 city! The only minor downside is that the engine can be a bit whiney when accelerating hard, but that's a small price to pay for such a fantastic car.

The style of the Lexus 400h Hybrid is excellent (the same as the RX330). If you can afford it, it's definitely worth the purchase. If you need more room for children and cargo, the Toyota Highlander Hybrid is a great option too. Both use the same technology. Also, I highly recommend getting the navigation system; it's a bit pricey at $2,000 but definitely worth having.

I love this car! It's the perfect size and fit for me, and it always makes me feel safe no matter the driving conditions. While the gas mileage isn't quite where I'd like it to be, I still get a decent 28 mpg on medium length drives in slow city traffic when I use a middle grade gas. When I use a low octane gas, it's around 24 mpg. The engine is powerful and responsive, which is great when I need to move quickly. Overall, I'm really happy with this car and I'll keep it until I find another one that can beat its comfort and quality.

Your actual mileage will be around 23-24 miles per gallon. I must say, this is the best vehicle I have ever owned. However, I did notice a minor defect with the paint, Bamboo Pearl. It seems like there might be something wrong with it.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with the RX400h. I've been a proud owner of this car since April 25th, 2005, and I still have my 1995 SC300. Both cars have been incredibly reliable and innovative, which is what I love about Lexus. The RX400h has exceeded all my expectations, and it's filled with small amenities that make it stand out from the rest. I'm particularly impressed with the informative displays on the Nav screen and speedometer, which have taught me a new way to drive. I'm always trying to keep the gas engine off, and the on/off cycles are virtually unnoticeable. Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts on this amazing car!

Hi there! I noticed that my RX400H only gets 20 MPG City. Also, when going over wider speed bumps with a small amount of loft, it sounds as if the engine is dropping out of the car with a loud bang. Additionally, there is mild steady vibration at times that can be felt in the steering wheel and seat armrest. I found the instrumentation to be a bit confusing, especially the cruise control which is on its own lever and moves with the steering wheel, making it difficult to access when turning. Have you experienced any of these issues?

After conducting extensive research on major automotive periodicals, I purchased a Lexus with high expectations. However, the vehicle did not meet my expectations as I was initially promised a fuel consumption rate of 38 mpg in town and 32 mpg on the highway, which was later changed to 32 mpg in town and 29 mpg on the highway with an average of 30+. Despite waiting until the vehicle had 5k miles, my overall average is a disappointing 24 mpg. Additionally, I experienced an issue with the windscreen fracturing without any impact, which was not repaired until I threatened legal action. Overall, my experience with this purchase has been unsatisfactory.

I've owned many luxury vehicles in the past, but unfortunately, this one has required the most repairs and has had some of the most difficult to diagnose problems. In comparison, my Mercedes never had any issues, and routine maintenance was always a pleasure with their loaner car service. My Grand Cherokees have been somewhat maintenance prone, but they have always been reliable and on schedule. However, this car has made me hesitant to drive it anywhere due to a shudder in the front end that nobody seems to be able to fix, even after replacing various parts. Additionally, the mileage is not great, averaging at 23 at best. The GPS is outdated and awkward to use, and updates are not worth the cost. Unfortunately, there is no way to add an auxiliary input for audio from any other source, and the back seat passengers can modify your GPS entries from the rear seat entertainment system, which can be frustrating. The car also has a lot of body roll in corners, which can be uncomfortable. The button and control layout of vital things like defrost and cruise control are all unintuitive ly placed or are a reach to get to, forcing you to take your eyes off the road. As someone who drives about 100k miles a year, this has been a challenging experience. I hope that Lexus can improve their future models, but for now, I will not be purchasing another Lexus.

Your gas mileage so far has been about 23 to 25 miles per gallon, which is great! Despite the claims, you didn't expect much more, but the car rides nicely. If you can, I would recommend getting the upgraded sound system as the standard one is poor - much worse than in your 1998 Volvo. Additionally, I personally prefer the old wood trim to the brushed chrome, which I think looks a bit cheap. Overall, the car is comfortable and rides well.

Although my car is a nice and fun car to drive, it has been a service nightmare. Despite bringing it in for maintenance, I have been told that I need new tires every time. While this seems to be standard for this model, it is frustrating. Additionally, there have been days when my car won't start and Lexus has been unable to identify the problem. The cost of repairs has also been quite high, with me never leaving without paying over $1,000. While I appreciate Lexus' hybrid technology, there seems to be a lack of understanding when it comes to addressing problems.
