Gmc Acadia problems

gmc logo

The GMC Acadia is a crossover SUV manufactured by General Motors for its GMC division. The first-generation GMC Acadia shared the GM Lambda platform with the Saturn Outlook, the Chevrolet Traverse, and the Buick Enclave. The Acadia went on sale in 2006 as a 2007 model in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Acadia replaces three of the 7- or 8-seater vehicles on the Buick-Pontiac–GMC dealership network, the midsize GMC Safari van, the GMC Envoy, and the Pontiac Montana SV6 minivan for the domestic market. As of 2009, the Lambda vehicles have replaced the Buick Rainier, Buick Rendezvous, Buick Terraza, and the GMC Envoy XL and then subsequently the GMC Envoy, Chevrolet TrailBlazer and the Isuzu Ascender. A Denali version of the Acadia debuted for 2011. In 2017, the second generation Acadia was repositioned as a mid-size crossover utility vehicle in order to compete within the growing midsize SUV market against the likes of the Ford Explorer, Edge, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

First generation (2007)

The Acadia represents GMC's entry-level truck-like CUV and is the first unibody vehicle from the marque. It is also GMC's first front-wheel drive passenger vehicle, and also the first such vehicle of any kind since the 1973-78 GMC Motorhome.

The Acadia has seating for eight and either front or all-wheel drive. With a 5,200 lb (2,359 kg) towing capacity, the Acadia slots between the GMC Terrain and the Yukon. The Acadia is the mid-priced Lambda model between the Chevrolet Traverse and Enclave.

In December 2006, all production and sales of the Acadia (and the Saturn Outlook) were temporarily stopped due to the engine mounts not having holes drilled to release accumulated water, as well as an issue with potentially faulty rivets in the load floor just forward of the vehicle's rear hatch. The assembly process was quickly adjusted, and dealership sales of the vehicles had resumed within days of the notice.

The first-generation Acadia was sold alongside its second-generation replacement as the Acadia Limited.

Common Gmc Acadia problems

The GMC Acadia is a popular SUV, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:

  • Check Engine Light: The check engine light is a common problem in the GMC Acadia, often pointing to a powertrain control module problem. This issue can be fixed with a simple software update. However, if the code points to a known camshaft problem, a technician is needed to complete GM’s prescribed fix.
  • Faulty A/C System: Some Acadia model years have struggled with a flawed A/C system, which can lead to decreased cooling performance. The root cause is often an evaporator leak that prevents cooling in one zone or the entire vehicle.
  • Engine Problems: Earlier Acadia models, particularly the 2008, 2010, and 2011 models, were prone to engine issues. These problems could lead to the engine slowing down and ultimately stopping in the middle of the road. Many owners had to spend a significant amount of money on engine replacement.
  • Power Steering Failures: Some Acadia owners have reported issues with the power steering, especially when making slow turns or during parking. This issue is more common in earlier model years.
  • Fuel Gauge Inaccuracies: Some Acadia owners have found that their fuel gauge doesn’t provide accurate readings, leading to instances of running out of fuel unexpectedly.
  • Suspension-Related Problems: Drivers have complained about noises from the front end, especially when driving over bumps or rough roads.
  • Brakes: Some Acadia owners have raised concerns over squeaking noises or reduced braking efficiency.
  • Ignition Switch Problems: Some users have reported problems with the ignition switch, including the vehicle not starting or the key getting stuck.
  • Electrical Complaints: Beyond the “Shift to park” issue, the Acadia has had other electrical complaints, such as random warning lights illuminating or the infotainment system rebooting unexpectedly.
  • Water Inside the Vehicle: Some Acadia drivers have found water inside their vehicles, especially around the footwells.

While these problems can be frustrating for Acadia owners, it's important to note that not all vehicles will experience these issues. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help prevent many of these problems from occurring or becoming more serious.

Do GMC Acadia have issues?

Common GMC Acadia Problems

Transmission fault: According to RepairPal, GMC Acadias with a six-speed automatic transmission may develop faults related to a broken 35R clutch wave plate within the transmission system. This may lead to symptoms like slipping transmission, harsh/rough shifting, and loss of reverse gear.

Are GMC acadias reliable?

According to repairpal.com, the GMC Acadia scores a three out of five in general reliability. This number puts it at 22nd when compared to 32 similar vehicles, less than ideal for reliability. The annual repair cost of the GMC Acadia is $734, almost $200 more expensive than the average of $573 for other midsize SUVs.

Do GMC acadias last long?

The GMC Acadia can last for over 200,000 miles. Many owners have kept their Acadia SUVs past that mileage with few issues.

What are the pros and cons of the GMC Acadia?

Cost to Drive. We like the Acadia for its comfortable ride, powerful V6 upgrade engine and easy-to-use technology features. Sadly, these advantages are kept in check by its disappointing interior quality, somewhat underpowered base four-cylinder engine, and limited third-row and cargo space.

I know that this is an ongoing issue with the 2017-2018 GMC Acadia and don't understand why GMC won't issue a recall for this. If this were to cause injury or an accident then they are 100% liable. I started having these issues about a week ago. My husband took it to the dealership and they told him that its not a recall or under warranty. I cannot afford to fix this myself at this point.

Latest negative Gmc Acadia car reviews

  1. Garrett Robel 2024-11-25

    Vehicle year: 2022

Sorry to hear that you've been having issues with your 2022 GMC Acadia. If you're in the market for a new SUV, there are plenty of other options out there to consider. Hopefully, the issues with your vehicle can be resolved soon. Take care!

  2. Orville Daugherty 2024-11-24

    Vehicle year: 2007

I recently took a 1,000 mile trip and unfortunately, it was not a pleasant experience. The tilted head of the seat kept hitting my head and I had a crick in my neck throughout the trip. The seats were quite firm and uncomfortable, and the lumbar support felt like it never released, causing both drivers on my trip to have backaches. However, I did appreciate the good visibility from the front window during the rainy weather. As someone who travels frequently, I regret purchasing this car. Additionally, the FM radio reception is poor, and XM radio must be paid for. The gas pedal is hard to push and requires a severe angle to reach, making the car slow and gas-consuming. Despite reading many positive reviews, I found this car to be uncomfortable and inefficient.

  3. Kaleb Ratke 2024-11-24

    Vehicle year: 2010

The gas mileage of the Acadia has not met my expectations, averaging 5-7 mpg less than advertised. Despite the dealer's assurance that it is within range, I have found other brands to be more truthful in their claims. As someone who prioritizes mileage, I have been disappointed with the results. Additionally, access for disabled individuals, such as myself with disabled veterans plates, has been difficult. Overall, I cannot recommend the Acadia for those with disabilities. It is my hope that GM will improve this product in the future.

  4. Thaddeus Krajcik 2024-11-23

    Vehicle year: 2011

Electronics have been a bit of a challenge for my vehicle. Unfortunately, I have had to repair it multiple times due to ongoing electronic issues. I recently reached 100K miles and decided it was time to move on. Despite some intermittent issues with the power seats and mirrors, air conditioning failures, and throttle body failure just 4 months after having it replaced, I am grateful for the time I had with my vehicle.

  5. Claud Robel 2024-11-22

    Vehicle year: 2021

When using Adaptive Cruise Control, it's important to keep in mind that the car may apply brakes if you're on a curve or if there's a slower car in the right lane. This can cause the car to slow down quite quickly, so it's worth being aware of. Additionally, when approaching a speed zone, it's best not to hold down the reduce button on the cruise control. Doing so can cause the car to slow down in 5 mph increments, which can be sudden and jarring. It's also worth noting that the brakes on my Acadia have been quite noisy, but the dealer has assured me that this is normal for a car with 5400 miles on it.

The vehicle you chose sounds amazing with its sharp black and white design and chrome accents. It's wonderful to hear that the ride is smooth and the engine is powerful. The interior sounds nicely refined and quiet, and the rear legroom is unrivaled by any other vehicle. The rear sliding seat is also a great feature for extra space. Overall, it sounds like you made a great choice at a reasonable price.

Hi there! I've been driving this SUV for 10 months now and have put about 9000 miles on it. I must say, it's one of the best riding vehicles I've ever owned (and I've owned over 20 vehicles!). I opted for the 2.0 Turbo engine and it has plenty of power while still maintaining great gas mileage. On a recent trip to Ocean City, I was able to average over 34 mpg while cruising at about 70mph for 500 miles. The transmission shifts smoothly and the vehicle handles excellently during winter driving (I live in the Western New York snow belt area).

The vehicle has many great features, but I dislike that it needs a bigger gas tank.

I'm glad to hear that you've driven over 3,000 miles without any complaints! I have the same model with a V-6 and 9-speed, but unfortunately, mine didn't come with a heated steering wheel. I wish I had one, especially during the recent cold spell. Overall, it's a quiet and enjoyable driving experience. However, I did have some trouble with the jack and lug wrench that came with the vehicle when I needed to install the 'donut' tire. I had to call for road assistance. Additionally, the rear doors now squeak when I open them, and even though I tried using WD-40, it hasn't solved the issue. When I brought my vehicle to the dealer for the first oil change, they told me that the radio needs updating, but I'm not sure what that means.

I've owned this car for 7 years and driven it for 150K miles (I bought it with 24K miles on it). It was a great deal and has a lot of features that are perfect for our family. It's been great on trips too! However, after hitting the 150,000 mile mark, we've had some maintenance issues. We take good care of our cars and change the oil regularly, but at 130,000 miles, the Traction Control bug started happening (still does, just annoying). Most of the modules failed, which was frustrating, but they were easy to fix as a DIY. We also had to replace the plugs and coils around 140K miles and the purge valve at 135K (DIY). After 150K miles, we've had to recharge the A/C every summer. Unfortunately, at 170,000 miles, we had to get a new transmission which was expensive. I would recommend getting an extended warranty or selling it after 150K miles. We are too invested to sell now, but I still like the car. It needs new struts/shocks, but I still feel like it's a fair deal for the money I paid. However, cars nowadays are not made like they used to be. Our mechanic said that a lot of American cars have plastic, computer modules, and cheap metal that just don't hold up well after 130,000+ miles.
