Gmc Acadia problems

gmc logo

The GMC Acadia is a crossover SUV manufactured by General Motors for its GMC division. The first-generation GMC Acadia shared the GM Lambda platform with the Saturn Outlook, the Chevrolet Traverse, and the Buick Enclave. The Acadia went on sale in 2006 as a 2007 model in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Acadia replaces three of the 7- or 8-seater vehicles on the Buick-Pontiac–GMC dealership network, the midsize GMC Safari van, the GMC Envoy, and the Pontiac Montana SV6 minivan for the domestic market. As of 2009, the Lambda vehicles have replaced the Buick Rainier, Buick Rendezvous, Buick Terraza, and the GMC Envoy XL and then subsequently the GMC Envoy, Chevrolet TrailBlazer and the Isuzu Ascender. A Denali version of the Acadia debuted for 2011. In 2017, the second generation Acadia was repositioned as a mid-size crossover utility vehicle in order to compete within the growing midsize SUV market against the likes of the Ford Explorer, Edge, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

First generation (2007)

The Acadia represents GMC's entry-level truck-like CUV and is the first unibody vehicle from the marque. It is also GMC's first front-wheel drive passenger vehicle, and also the first such vehicle of any kind since the 1973-78 GMC Motorhome.

The Acadia has seating for eight and either front or all-wheel drive. With a 5,200 lb (2,359 kg) towing capacity, the Acadia slots between the GMC Terrain and the Yukon. The Acadia is the mid-priced Lambda model between the Chevrolet Traverse and Enclave.

In December 2006, all production and sales of the Acadia (and the Saturn Outlook) were temporarily stopped due to the engine mounts not having holes drilled to release accumulated water, as well as an issue with potentially faulty rivets in the load floor just forward of the vehicle's rear hatch. The assembly process was quickly adjusted, and dealership sales of the vehicles had resumed within days of the notice.

The first-generation Acadia was sold alongside its second-generation replacement as the Acadia Limited.

Common Gmc Acadia problems

The GMC Acadia is a popular SUV, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:

  • Check Engine Light: The check engine light is a common problem in the GMC Acadia, often pointing to a powertrain control module problem. This issue can be fixed with a simple software update. However, if the code points to a known camshaft problem, a technician is needed to complete GM’s prescribed fix.
  • Faulty A/C System: Some Acadia model years have struggled with a flawed A/C system, which can lead to decreased cooling performance. The root cause is often an evaporator leak that prevents cooling in one zone or the entire vehicle.
  • Engine Problems: Earlier Acadia models, particularly the 2008, 2010, and 2011 models, were prone to engine issues. These problems could lead to the engine slowing down and ultimately stopping in the middle of the road. Many owners had to spend a significant amount of money on engine replacement.
  • Power Steering Failures: Some Acadia owners have reported issues with the power steering, especially when making slow turns or during parking. This issue is more common in earlier model years.
  • Fuel Gauge Inaccuracies: Some Acadia owners have found that their fuel gauge doesn’t provide accurate readings, leading to instances of running out of fuel unexpectedly.
  • Suspension-Related Problems: Drivers have complained about noises from the front end, especially when driving over bumps or rough roads.
  • Brakes: Some Acadia owners have raised concerns over squeaking noises or reduced braking efficiency.
  • Ignition Switch Problems: Some users have reported problems with the ignition switch, including the vehicle not starting or the key getting stuck.
  • Electrical Complaints: Beyond the “Shift to park” issue, the Acadia has had other electrical complaints, such as random warning lights illuminating or the infotainment system rebooting unexpectedly.
  • Water Inside the Vehicle: Some Acadia drivers have found water inside their vehicles, especially around the footwells.

While these problems can be frustrating for Acadia owners, it's important to note that not all vehicles will experience these issues. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help prevent many of these problems from occurring or becoming more serious.

Do GMC Acadia have issues?

Common GMC Acadia Problems

Transmission fault: According to RepairPal, GMC Acadias with a six-speed automatic transmission may develop faults related to a broken 35R clutch wave plate within the transmission system. This may lead to symptoms like slipping transmission, harsh/rough shifting, and loss of reverse gear.

Are GMC acadias reliable?

According to repairpal.com, the GMC Acadia scores a three out of five in general reliability. This number puts it at 22nd when compared to 32 similar vehicles, less than ideal for reliability. The annual repair cost of the GMC Acadia is $734, almost $200 more expensive than the average of $573 for other midsize SUVs.

Do GMC acadias last long?

The GMC Acadia can last for over 200,000 miles. Many owners have kept their Acadia SUVs past that mileage with few issues.

What are the pros and cons of the GMC Acadia?

Cost to Drive. We like the Acadia for its comfortable ride, powerful V6 upgrade engine and easy-to-use technology features. Sadly, these advantages are kept in check by its disappointing interior quality, somewhat underpowered base four-cylinder engine, and limited third-row and cargo space.

I know that this is an ongoing issue with the 2017-2018 GMC Acadia and don't understand why GMC won't issue a recall for this. If this were to cause injury or an accident then they are 100% liable. I started having these issues about a week ago. My husband took it to the dealership and they told him that its not a recall or under warranty. I cannot afford to fix this myself at this point.

Latest negative Gmc Acadia car reviews

  1. Edmond Carroll 2025-09-29

    Vehicle year: 2009

I purchased a 2009 Acadia in March of the same year, but unfortunately, I have experienced a number of issues with it. Despite the dealership's efforts to fix the air conditioning and pick up, the problems persist. Living in a hot place like Las Vegas, it's really important to have good air conditioning, and without it, driving can be unbearable. It's also frustrating when a Prius can easily pass you on the freeway with no acceleration. The car has been in the shop multiple times, but the issues have not been resolved. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this car, as it may be a lemon. It's disappointing that GMC does not seem to be taking the issue seriously. Until they address these problems and take care of their customers, it may be best to avoid purchasing GM cars. Additionally, the mileage has been averaging less than 17 miles per gallon, closer to 15 even on the highway.

  2. Wilfred Bode 2025-09-28

    Vehicle year: 2017

I leased a SLE-1 2.5L 4cyl model new in 2017 and have put 31000 miles on it. Now it's time to review. While there are some areas for improvement, overall I have had a positive experience with this car. One area that could use some work is the auto start/stop function, which I find to be a bit of a nuisance. Additionally, the factory-installed Michelin Premier tires did not last as long as I had hoped. However, the car itself drives great and is very comfortable. It gets excellent fuel economy (28-29 mpg hwy) and is very quiet. Overall, I would recommend this car to others.I'm glad to hear that you haven't experienced any mechanical issues with your car, even after driving it for 31000 miles. When you were deciding between the Acadia and the Dodge Journey, it sounds like the Acadia was the clear winner for you in terms of handling and driving. I agree that the 2.5L 4 cyl engine provides adequate power to move the car, and it's great to hear that you feel safe driving it, even on the interstate. With your average of 20k miles per year of highway driving, it's impressive that you haven't had any performance issues. It's important to know your limitations when it comes to any vehicle. While the Acadia is very comfortable to drive and has decent looks and room, I understand that the Auto start/stop, radio, and Onstar features make it a deal breaker for you. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the Acadia, and I hope you find a car that better suits your needs.

  3. Adalberto Tillman 2025-09-25

    Vehicle year: 2014

I bought this car brand new in February 2017. Unfortunately, the check engine light came on a few weeks ago, despite the car only having 5,000 miles on it. I took it to the dealership and they tried three different fixes, but none of them worked. Feeling frustrated, I decided to reach out to GMC customer service via email. Although it took a week for someone to get back to me, the customer service agent was very friendly and understanding. When I asked about getting my money back, she explained that her department didn't handle those types of issues, but she promised to escalate my request. Unfortunately, I received a call last night from the agent informing me that GMC would not be able to reimburse me. When I asked for more information, she explained that her department didn't make those types of decisions and she couldn't connect me with the person who did. Despite this setback, I picked up my car today after GMC replaced a sensor, a wiring harness, some computer, and now a water pump. I'm hoping that the check engine light stays off this time! In any case, I would advise others to be cautious and consider other options before choosing GMC.

Although your wife loves how it looks and the space it provides, it seems like there have been some issues with the car after 15K miles. The alignment is out, the chrome trimming is falling off and has to be replaced, and the entertainment system is glitchy and is starting to squeal when it spins a DVD. Additionally, the engine on the Acadia is underpowered, the navigation is cumbersome and difficult to use, and the various other controls are antiquated. The collusion alert and lane departure are too sensitive and provide a lot of false alerts. However, the heads-up display and the a/c chairs are pretty cool. It's unfortunate that this car has not met your expectations, especially considering the cost. We hope that you will consider other options in the future. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

Please be aware that there is a major issue with this vehicle that dealerships are currently unable to fix. When attempting to turn off the car, an error message appears stating that the vehicle needs to be in park, even though it already is. This can be frustrating as it takes approximately 30 seconds to 5 minutes to resolve each time it happens. Additionally, the start-stop feature and keyless entry system may not be to everyone's liking. We apologize for any inconvenience these features may cause.

It's a bit on the pricey side, but it's just the right size - not too big and not too small. I traded in a 2019 Tahoe, which was also a great car, but it was too big and had a truck-like feel. The Acadia handles more like a car - it's much more responsive and quicker. My wife is the primary driver and she absolutely loves it!

I debated between a Yukon and an Acadia, but ultimately chose the 2016 Acadia Denali AWD. While I've enjoyed owning the car for almost a year, I do wish I had gone with the Yukon instead. The car seems to be designed with young kids in mind, especially in the back seats. The captains chairs in the 2nd row need to be able to lean all the way back and be a bit wider for the average adult. Additionally, the cup holders are quite small and not suitable for larger drinks, which can be frustrating. The trunk space is nice, but if you have a car full of people, don't plan on hauling much luggage. While I understand that not being able to type in an address while driving is a safety feature, it can be a bit inconvenient at times. The car also seems to have trouble figuring out when to shift, and the weight of the car can make it difficult to slow down. Despite these issues, the car has a very nice overall look, and the chrome details really make it stand out. If GMC could address these concerns, the car would be absolutely perfect!

It seems like there are some issues with the 2008 Acadia that need to be addressed by GMC. It would be great if they could follow through on their promises to deliver high-quality cars. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I've been driving this vehicle for just over 2 years and I must say, it's the best riding vehicle I've ever owned. I haven't had any mechanical issues with it, even after driving over 38,000 miles. Although there have been a couple of minor recalls, they were nothing that would prevent me from giving it a great review. The power is pretty good and the ride is smooth. The interior is great too! The only downside is the gas mileage, but it gets what it's supposed to, so I can't complain too much. This thing weighs over 6,000 lbs, but it still runs smoothly without any mechanical defects. Who could ask for anything more? Update: I'm still driving this awesome vehicle and it has just hit 90,000 miles. I have not had a single problem with it. I keep up with all the normal maintenance and it still has the original brakes. Besides fluids and tires, I haven't done a thing to the vehicle.

I recently traded my tank-like Tahoe for a smaller crossover that fits my whole family. Although the Tahoe was an LS model, the safety features of the new car make me feel more comfortable with my kids driving, especially since they are about to learn how to drive. Another great feature is the WiFi availability, which my kids absolutely love! I am really happy with everything about this car so far. The salesman and the entire staff at Southern GMC in Chesapeake Virginia were wonderful to us. Adam was very knowledgeable and helpful. We were able to meet our price point, and my husband even got a free GMC hat, and they filled up the gas tank. I am extremely pleased and happy with our decision to not get another big-sized SUV.
