Gmc Acadia problems

gmc logo

The GMC Acadia is a crossover SUV manufactured by General Motors for its GMC division. The first-generation GMC Acadia shared the GM Lambda platform with the Saturn Outlook, the Chevrolet Traverse, and the Buick Enclave. The Acadia went on sale in 2006 as a 2007 model in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Acadia replaces three of the 7- or 8-seater vehicles on the Buick-Pontiac–GMC dealership network, the midsize GMC Safari van, the GMC Envoy, and the Pontiac Montana SV6 minivan for the domestic market. As of 2009, the Lambda vehicles have replaced the Buick Rainier, Buick Rendezvous, Buick Terraza, and the GMC Envoy XL and then subsequently the GMC Envoy, Chevrolet TrailBlazer and the Isuzu Ascender. A Denali version of the Acadia debuted for 2011. In 2017, the second generation Acadia was repositioned as a mid-size crossover utility vehicle in order to compete within the growing midsize SUV market against the likes of the Ford Explorer, Edge, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

First generation (2007)

The Acadia represents GMC's entry-level truck-like CUV and is the first unibody vehicle from the marque. It is also GMC's first front-wheel drive passenger vehicle, and also the first such vehicle of any kind since the 1973-78 GMC Motorhome.

The Acadia has seating for eight and either front or all-wheel drive. With a 5,200 lb (2,359 kg) towing capacity, the Acadia slots between the GMC Terrain and the Yukon. The Acadia is the mid-priced Lambda model between the Chevrolet Traverse and Enclave.

In December 2006, all production and sales of the Acadia (and the Saturn Outlook) were temporarily stopped due to the engine mounts not having holes drilled to release accumulated water, as well as an issue with potentially faulty rivets in the load floor just forward of the vehicle's rear hatch. The assembly process was quickly adjusted, and dealership sales of the vehicles had resumed within days of the notice.

The first-generation Acadia was sold alongside its second-generation replacement as the Acadia Limited.

Common Gmc Acadia problems

The GMC Acadia is a popular SUV, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:

  • Check Engine Light: The check engine light is a common problem in the GMC Acadia, often pointing to a powertrain control module problem. This issue can be fixed with a simple software update. However, if the code points to a known camshaft problem, a technician is needed to complete GM’s prescribed fix.
  • Faulty A/C System: Some Acadia model years have struggled with a flawed A/C system, which can lead to decreased cooling performance. The root cause is often an evaporator leak that prevents cooling in one zone or the entire vehicle.
  • Engine Problems: Earlier Acadia models, particularly the 2008, 2010, and 2011 models, were prone to engine issues. These problems could lead to the engine slowing down and ultimately stopping in the middle of the road. Many owners had to spend a significant amount of money on engine replacement.
  • Power Steering Failures: Some Acadia owners have reported issues with the power steering, especially when making slow turns or during parking. This issue is more common in earlier model years.
  • Fuel Gauge Inaccuracies: Some Acadia owners have found that their fuel gauge doesn’t provide accurate readings, leading to instances of running out of fuel unexpectedly.
  • Suspension-Related Problems: Drivers have complained about noises from the front end, especially when driving over bumps or rough roads.
  • Brakes: Some Acadia owners have raised concerns over squeaking noises or reduced braking efficiency.
  • Ignition Switch Problems: Some users have reported problems with the ignition switch, including the vehicle not starting or the key getting stuck.
  • Electrical Complaints: Beyond the “Shift to park” issue, the Acadia has had other electrical complaints, such as random warning lights illuminating or the infotainment system rebooting unexpectedly.
  • Water Inside the Vehicle: Some Acadia drivers have found water inside their vehicles, especially around the footwells.

While these problems can be frustrating for Acadia owners, it's important to note that not all vehicles will experience these issues. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help prevent many of these problems from occurring or becoming more serious.

Do GMC Acadia have issues?

Common GMC Acadia Problems

Transmission fault: According to RepairPal, GMC Acadias with a six-speed automatic transmission may develop faults related to a broken 35R clutch wave plate within the transmission system. This may lead to symptoms like slipping transmission, harsh/rough shifting, and loss of reverse gear.

Are GMC acadias reliable?

According to repairpal.com, the GMC Acadia scores a three out of five in general reliability. This number puts it at 22nd when compared to 32 similar vehicles, less than ideal for reliability. The annual repair cost of the GMC Acadia is $734, almost $200 more expensive than the average of $573 for other midsize SUVs.

Do GMC acadias last long?

The GMC Acadia can last for over 200,000 miles. Many owners have kept their Acadia SUVs past that mileage with few issues.

What are the pros and cons of the GMC Acadia?

Cost to Drive. We like the Acadia for its comfortable ride, powerful V6 upgrade engine and easy-to-use technology features. Sadly, these advantages are kept in check by its disappointing interior quality, somewhat underpowered base four-cylinder engine, and limited third-row and cargo space.

I know that this is an ongoing issue with the 2017-2018 GMC Acadia and don't understand why GMC won't issue a recall for this. If this were to cause injury or an accident then they are 100% liable. I started having these issues about a week ago. My husband took it to the dealership and they told him that its not a recall or under warranty. I cannot afford to fix this myself at this point.

Latest negative Gmc Acadia car reviews

  1. Mateo Kirlin 2025-05-09

    Vehicle year: 2010

I purchased this Acadia brand new from the dealer's lot at the end of 2010 and thought I had gotten a great deal. Unfortunately, since then, I have had to take it in for service close to 15 times due to recalls and service bulletins. Just in the past month, it has been in the shop 5 times for various trouble codes and faults. I am disappointed that the engineering has not lived up to the 'Professional Grade' motto and have requested a full refund, but unfortunately, my request has been denied. As a long-time GM fan of 40 years, I am saddened to say that I will be selling all of my GM products.

  2. Orin Strosin 2025-05-07

    Vehicle year: 2012

We bought our 2012 Acadia brand new in February 2013 and have put 90,000 miles on it over the past 5 years. While we've had some repairs to deal with, we've always been able to count on our dealership to help us out. During the winter months, we've had to take the car in to have the sensors in the tires reset, but our dealership has always been able to quickly and efficiently take care of it. In 2015, we had to replace the fuel injectors due to a known issue, but our dealership was able to help us out and get it fixed. We've also had a few issues with a smell of radiator fluid inside the car, but our dealership has always been able to address it and make sure everything is okay. Recently, we had an issue with the water pump, but our dealership was able to quickly diagnose and fix the problem. While there were a few other issues that were discovered during the repair, our dealership was able to take care of everything and get us back on the road. We're grateful for their help and expertise!Let's get that fixed up for $2,100 and everything will be alright! But wait... there's more! We picked up the car on a Friday and parked it at our house around 8 PM. When my wife attempted to use it for the first time on Sunday around 3 PM, the car wouldn't crank. After trying for 30 minutes, it finally turned over but began to idle at irregular RPMs. We returned the car to the dealership and left the keys in the Dropbox, explaining the issue. When we called on Monday afternoon, we were told they couldn't find anything wrong and wanted to keep it for an additional day. On Tuesday, we were informed that it was the High Pressure fuel pump, which was fixed for $900. We now have a car that we paid 32k for with 90k miles and just replaced pretty much anything that may give us trouble for the next 90k miles. However, there's more. When we picked up the car today, the AC wouldn't come on. We immediately returned to the dealership and spoke with the service manager about the issue. He puts on some fancy yellow glasses and goes straight to the AC line. He exclaims, 'Wow! There's your problem.' He then describes how the area where the hose is located is nowhere near anything they have worked on before. I am currently awaiting the pricing for this 'hose repair'. Although I am sure it will be more than $500 but less than $1500, I am sorry to say that I am already 6k in on the car and will be trading it in as soon as I get it back. For those of you in the market for an SUV, I would not recommend purchasing a 2012 Silver Acadia, as this one will likely be out there on the market, waiting to bite you in the A$. It may seem great with low miles, a clean interior, nice wheels, and a DVD package. It will have the third row, leather seats, and several months left on the XM system. The body will be untouched and clean with a nice shine to it. However, I would advise you to WALK AWAY, fast. I will not EVER buy another GMC.

I am sorry to hear about the issue you are experiencing with your car. It seems that the shift to park problem is causing the car electronics to not turn off, which can be frustrating. It is disappointing to hear that GM is aware of the issue but has not taken any action to correct it. It is understandable that this continuous problem can be frustrating for you on a daily basis. It is unfortunate that there has been no effort to replace the shifting mechanisms. I would advise against purchasing this car, as most other cars' stick shift mechanisms work properly.

The 2019 AWD has been a reliable car for me, with the exception of some transmission issues that have arisen after 2500 miles. The shifting has become noticeably worse at 9100 miles, with a noticeable brake-like sensation between shifts. However, the car's appearance and handling are satisfactory. The headlights are not as bright as I would prefer, but this was easily remedied by upgrading the bulbs. Overall, I would recommend this car with the caveat that there have been some transmission issues. It is fortunate that I have a lease, but I believe that these issues can be resolved with proper maintenance and care.

At first, there were only a few issues such as the malfunctioning back-up camera. However, when I went to get it replaced, I had to wait for two hours only to be told that they didn't have the part. Despite this, they were able to fix the bubbling paint on the hood caused by rust without any problem or complaint. Unfortunately, I had to wait for over two hours (with my infant) when I had an issue with the brakes and was told that they had to keep the car. Additionally, the service airbag light has come on twice in the last month. Although they ordered the part on the second attempt, they didn't inform me until I asked about it. At 35979, I had a full service check and was told that the car was in full working order. However, at 36102, the car seems to continue running after the key is out of the ignition.

My wife and I both fell in love with the new model, but for different reasons. While I miss the heads up display and rear cargo room, my wife loves the better visibility and handling. I quickly came around to her point of view. I ordered the rare black with tan interior and we picked it up on Thursday, driving to Florida on Friday. The mileage is awesome compared to the old model because you can select various modes, 2wd vs AWD. The old model was permanent AWD and I only got 13mpg on my 2012. However, with the new model, I am getting 18mpg in AWD, but hey, it's winter in Indiana. With 2wd, you can get 26-28mpg depending on weight, speed, etc. but you trade a little wheel spin up front and understeer. I ordered it loaded with every option, so I highly recommend the weathertech mats which do not interfere with anything like others mentioned. The front, rear, and satellite cameras are awesome for backing up blindly. This 3.6 has more power and stops better than you would think. It handles like a dream with stabilitrack lane management, crash avoidance, and load leveling. Both my wife and I like it a lot and I plan to keep this one for a long time. One small nuisance is an occasional shift delay like others have mentioned, but I drive hard and apply more fuel, so this rarely happens.

Hi there! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your '09 Acadia overall, despite the minor issues you've experienced. I understand your concern about the timing chain and the warranty, especially since you don't drive much. However, it's great to know that the power train warranty has been increased by GM to 100K. Have you considered talking to your dealer about an extended warranty? That could give you some peace of mind and allow you to keep enjoying your car for years to come. Best of luck with your decision!

I recently leased a 2017 GMC Acadia Denali and have been thoroughly enjoying it for the past month. The size is perfect for me, similar to that of a Pilot or Highlander. GM has really nailed the infotainment system - it's incredibly user-friendly with an intuitive combination of touch screen and hard buttons. Plus, it offers both Apple Car Play and Android Auto. The safety features work exactly as promised. I compared it to most of the competition, including the Pilot, Highlander, Explorer, XC90, MDX, and Pathfinder, and for me, the Acadia Denali's near-luxury feel, fantastic in-car technology, and new styling put it ahead of the rest. While I was also impressed with the XC90, I was hesitant to go for a first-year Volvo model, and the large touch screen wasn't as intuitive as advertised. This is my first American car in over 30 years (coming from an '08 MDX), and I have to say that the Acadia Denali is a great alternative to the mass Asian/Korean brands and the near-luxury competitors. If you need a larger size, GMC is still selling the previous body style as the Acadia Limited, and you can also opt for the Traverse/Enclave. The only areas for improvement would be more exterior color options and the use of real wood instead of fake veneers. I also would have preferred more interior leather colors, but I understand that GM needs to maintain separation between GMC and Cadillac.

My first vehicle was a Pontiac Aztek, which I loved and kept for 196,450 miles. Since Pontiac is no longer in business, I had to find another car maker. I temporarily had a 2017 Toyota RAV4 hybrid for 7,091 miles, but unfortunately had to get rid of it due to the seats being extremely uncomfortable for me. So, I decided to go for the 2017 GMC Acadia All Terrain, which is my third vehicle. I have driven it for 7,550 miles and it is much better than the Toyota RAV4 in terms of comfort. When looking to replace the Toyota RAV4, we expanded our search to include all CUVs, even the most expensive ones like the Porsche Macan. So far, I have taken the Acadia to the shop for one oil change, tire rotation, and a software update when a service light came on. It has a smooth ride, not harsh, and a softer suspension. Sometimes, I do feel like the engine creates vibration shortly after starting it, but it goes away. I love that I didn't have to have the 3rd row seat, nor do I have to have a sunroof because I don't need either. Most CUVs, when you get to the upper trims, automatically give you a sunroof which adds $1,000 or so to the vehicle for something I'll never use. The infotainment is well designed and very intuitive. The information in front of the driver is good, showing everything one would like to see (tire pressure, digital speedometer, odometer, etc). If I turn off the infotainment screen, I still have a clock, unlike most CUVs where the clock goes away when you turn off the infotainment screen. The steering wheel controls are well placed and the wheel itself is comfortable to hold. The all-weather floor mats cover the entire floor and stay in place. The head restraint is a good distance from the back of my head, unlike some of the vehicles where it was so close I found myself leaning forward, which does nothing for good posture. The audio system is quite good, better than most. However, for me, so many of the CUVs have a bit too narrow of seats.I'm 5'6

When I was younger, my family owned Packards (you know, 'Ask the man who owns one') and later we switched to Chevys and Cadillacs. However, in the 80s, we started driving German cars because the quality of American cars had declined. But my opinion of American quality has been revised since I purchased my 2012 Acadia. It is a very sophisticated work of engineering that is on par with German and Japanese cars, but at a more realistic purchase price and with more reasonable service charges. Despite its size, the Acadia handles very precisely. I am thoroughly impressed!
