2021 Gmc Acadia problems

gmc logo

The GMC Acadia is a crossover SUV manufactured by General Motors for its GMC division. The first-generation GMC Acadia shared the GM Lambda platform with the Saturn Outlook, the Chevrolet Traverse, and the Buick Enclave. The Acadia went on sale in 2006 as a 2007 model in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Acadia replaces three of the 7- or 8-seater vehicles on the Buick-Pontiac–GMC dealership network, the midsize GMC Safari van, the GMC Envoy, and the Pontiac Montana SV6 minivan for the domestic market. As of 2009, the Lambda vehicles have replaced the Buick Rainier, Buick Rendezvous, Buick Terraza, and the GMC Envoy XL and then subsequently the GMC Envoy, Chevrolet TrailBlazer and the Isuzu Ascender. A Denali version of the Acadia debuted for 2011. In 2017, the second generation Acadia was repositioned as a mid-size crossover utility vehicle in order to compete within the growing midsize SUV market against the likes of the Ford Explorer, Edge, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

First generation (2007)

The Acadia represents GMC's entry-level truck-like CUV and is the first unibody vehicle from the marque. It is also GMC's first front-wheel drive passenger vehicle, and also the first such vehicle of any kind since the 1973-78 GMC Motorhome.

The Acadia has seating for eight and either front or all-wheel drive. With a 5,200 lb (2,359 kg) towing capacity, the Acadia slots between the GMC Terrain and the Yukon. The Acadia is the mid-priced Lambda model between the Chevrolet Traverse and Enclave.

In December 2006, all production and sales of the Acadia (and the Saturn Outlook) were temporarily stopped due to the engine mounts not having holes drilled to release accumulated water, as well as an issue with potentially faulty rivets in the load floor just forward of the vehicle's rear hatch. The assembly process was quickly adjusted, and dealership sales of the vehicles had resumed within days of the notice.

The first-generation Acadia was sold alongside its second-generation replacement as the Acadia Limited.

Common 2021 Gmc Acadia problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2021 GMC Acadia, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Excessive Brake Wear:
    • Owners have reported excessive brake wear, particularly with front brake pads wearing down quickly, usually around 12,000 miles. Replacing brake pads costs approximately $150, while damaged rotors may add an extra $400 to the cost.
  2. Noise While Steering:
    • Some owners have experienced noise while steering, typically around 5,000 miles. This issue is often caused by a worn-out power steering motor. Replacing the power steering motor can cost around $650 if out of warranty.
  3. Delayed Gear Changes:
    • Delayed gear changes have been reported by some owners within the first 1,000 miles. This problem is usually related to software issues with the transmission control module. Software updates are available to improve the speed of gear changes, with some dealers offering the update for free.
  4. Recalls:
    • Two recalls have been issued for the 2021 GMC Acadia. One recall addresses improperly installed fuel supply lines leading to a fuel leak, while the other involves the rearview camera. GMC offers free replacements for the affected parts to rectify these issues.

These problems, while not universal, have been highlighted by owners of the 2021 GMC Acadia and may require attention to ensure the vehicle's optimal performance and safety.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-16
  • VIN: 1GKKNXLSXMZ
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Electronic dashboard failure. Entire instrument panel randomly shuts off while driving, including speedometer and all gauges. Driver then has to wait for system to reboot itself before it begins working again. This condition is completely random and may not occur for months, or may occur several times within minutes. This is a safety issue due to the driver's inability to monitor speed. It is also possible that other safety systems are being shut down while waiting for the system to reboot. GM has known about this software glitch since 2021, and it affects certain GM vehicle models from 2021-2023. (Refer to GM TSB# 21-NA-054). NHTSA should require a recall for this problem.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-06
  • VIN: 1GKKNLLS8MZ
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: No matter what speed I am driving at or whether or not there is a passenger my service safety restraint system light comes on randomly and shuts off randomly. I called the dealership and they brushed it off saying it just means the airbag wont deploy if I were to get into an accident. Great thanks that makes me feel real safe! I see several people complaining about this as well and think it might be time to look into what the problem is and do a recall.
2024-06-27

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-06
  • VIN: 1GKKNLLS8MZ
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: I have 43,000 miles on my car and I do not by any means drive hard or really ever go over 50 MPH and I am being told that my rear tow links are loose and need to be replaced. I have NEVER had to replace those in any vehicle I have ever owned especially a 2021 vehicle with under 50k miles on it. I have read that there is a recall on the 2022 Acadia's for this exact issue so I can only assume it is the same issue happening on the 2021's as well.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-29
  • VIN: 1GKKNKLS4MZ
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My 2021 GMC Acadia only has 25,327 miles. I purchased it new from Mossy of Picayune. The fuel pump module has been replaced 3 times. The first 2 times I was able to drive it to dealership for repairs. The last time on march 29, I was crossing a very busy highway and my vehicle just stopped without warning. It stopped as I was crossing and vehicles were coming up behind me very fast and I was almost hit. This was very scary and dangerous for me and my family and also the other vehicles on the highway . I was able to coax it into the emergency lane. I called Mossy of Picayune and was told my vehicle was no longer under warranty and they didn’t have a tow truck available. I had it towed to a local repair shop and had repaired. The cost to tow to Mossy was high (40 miles). And I paid $100.00 to have towed to local shop. The cost of repairs was $285.00. There really needs to be a recall on this dangerous situation. I have read many reviews with others having the same problem with their 2021 Acadia. I am very worried to drive my vehicle.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-16
  • VIN: 1GKKNULS8MZ
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Vehicle engine shuts off randomly while driving, car goes into neutral, and I have to stop and try to restart it. Sometimes, the vehicle struggles to start up and requires multiple attempts before being able to drive again. The engine then misfires, the car shakes aggressively, and engine will shuts off again 1-2 more times before it will start smoothly. This is obviously a safety issue as it happens while driving and could lead to a major collision. Been to the dealership multiple times. First time, the dealership was unable to find anything wrong and could not replicate the problem. The problem continued to happen and returned to dealership where they replaced the purge valve in the fuel system. Problem started occurring again and returned to dealership. Dealership kept vehicle for a week and was unable to replicate the problem. Showed the dealership a video of the problem and they replaced the fuel pump control module. A few weeks out from the fuel pump control module replacement and the car shut off twice while driving to work.

BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-02-28
  • VIN: 1GKKNXLS0MZ
  • Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: The rear view camera was supposed to have been fixed during the safety recall in 2022, but two years later and over seven visits to dealership service repair shop, it still has not been fixed. GMC says they don't know how to fix it because they have tried everything and that because my warranty has been "out" one month - there is nothing they can do for me. My back up camera has not worked since the recall repair. What can I do? The car has been in the shop, who says they are contacting GMC Service Expert - but they are not communicating with me anymore. I have no car and no fix.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-18
  • VIN: 1GKKNKLA7MZ

  • Summary: UNKNOWN-THE VECHILE WILL NOT START AND SHOWS THE FUEL IS EMPTY, BUT I JUST LOOKED PRIOR AND HAD 3/4 FULL.
2024-03-04

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-07
  • VIN: 1GKKNPLS6MZ
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: FUEL PUMP CONTROL MODULE The fuel pump control module failed while sitting idle at a major highway intersection during the noon rush hour. All efforts to remove from the highway failed because the electronic shifter could not be moved to the neutral position and the electronic parking brake could not be disengaged. It was two hours before a tow truck arrived and traffic was backed up for approximately one mile. The vehicle was towed into the dealership where the problem was identified and the fuel pump control module was replaced. (Invoice attached.) I am unaware of any accidents related to this specific incident, however given that traffic was backed up as far as it was, it is certainly a possibility. The component was not inspected by anyone other than the dealership. There were no warnings, indicators, or symptoms prior to the failure. The same component (FUEL PUMP CONTROL MODULE) failed again more recently. Fortunately it occurred in a shopping mall parking lot and only caused inconvenience and delays. However, there is evidently an issues with this particular component. (Invoice included to verify part failure and replacement.)

2024-02-26

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-26
  • VIN: 1GKKNLLS5MZ
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The exhaust resonator failed only a few hundred miles after warranty (60,300) and not covered by dealer under warranty. It creates a noise and reduces power/performance, which could inherently create a safety concern. The vehicle was inspected by an independent service center. The following code for the rattle noise is PIT5863.

AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-18
  • VIN: 1GKKNRLS2MZ
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: Service safety restraint system notice comes on constantly and disappears at random times.
2024-02-05

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-17
  • VIN: 1GKKNML47MZ
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The fabric on my headliner/ceiling is coming unglued or the clips are not holding it. It is a danger to my driving the car as it is continually loosening; which could potentially fall while I am driving the car. It is making an irritating squeaking noise which distracts my concentration from driving carefully. I took the car to Walker GMC in Alexandria, Louisiana. The mechanic and the service advisor both told me GMC has issued an instruction form on how to fix this problem as GMC has had complaints with this happening to the Acadias. I contacted GMC customer service. They will not let me know if they will cover the cost of the repair until I get an estimate. Walker is wanting to charge approximately $188 for the estimate. Since this is a safety issue, I am reporting this problem to your agency so that others may be protected and GMC will take care of this problem.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-01
  • VIN: 1GKKNPLSXMZ
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Vehicle lost power and died during normal driving. Luckily it occurred on a low traffic road and not the interstate. Prior to this there were no check engine lights or other signs of failure or degradation in performance. Was unable to start the vehicle and had to have it towed to my local dealership for service. Failure was due to the Fuel System Control Module GM part 13543075. This part is currently back ordered nation wide and the dealership cannot give an ETA on part availability or repairs.

STEERING,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-09
  • VIN: 1GKKNLLS1MZ
  • Components: STEERING,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The car stopped working all of a sudden, I was driving the car with no issues that morning and parked & shut off car to go to my appt. I turned the car back on and worked fine as I was putting in my address on the GPS my car just stopped and shut off by itself. I pushed the start button and it sounded like it wanted to start but it wouldn't and the whole engine shooked. Called GM and car still under warranty had it towed to the nearest GM. They diagnosed it and said it was the fuel injector module that went bad. It's 2021 with only 23800 miles. After a week, just got it back for a day and now the cooling fan has a loud noise, check engine light on, coolant stays on C even after driving it more than 10 mins, ac blows hot air, I get an alert with steering assist is reduced and to drive with care.....seems like something is wrong with the thermostat.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-06
  • VIN: 1GKKNKLA3MZ
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: My grandson used the safety restraint in the middle second row seat. He pulled the belt out to put it on and it would not retract. I have taken it to the dealership to have it fixed but there is a fee of $515 to fix it. I do not feel I should have to pay the since it seems to be an ongoing problem with the Acadia model. I purchased a 2018 model before this one and the same thing happened with the middle safety restraint in the second row seat. I have contacted GM and they informed me there is nothing they can do to waive the fee of fixing this defect.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-22
  • VIN: 1GKKNXLS6MZ
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: My 2021 Acadia digital dash goes out (completely black). I took it to the dealership on Friday August 25, as the issue was happening more frequently. I was told the software was not current. This was attributed to parking in a garage each night. Yesterday September 22 while driving, the dash again went out for a much longer timeframe (several miles). I called the dealership. Service was closing but was told by the receptionist that one of the sale people said to (1) park the car, (2) turn off the engine, (3) open the drivers door and leave open for 5 minutes to reset the system and everything should be fine. The black dash prevents the driver from seeing current MPH. I am uncertain if it also disengages adaptive cruise control and auto-braking. Is it acceptable for the digital dash to routinely go black while being operated? Is there a more sustainable resolution for the dash going out? Thank you!

Negative 2021 Gmc Acadia car reviews

  1. Claud Robel 2024-11-22

When using Adaptive Cruise Control, it's important to keep in mind that the car may apply brakes if you're on a curve or if there's a slower car in the right lane. This can cause the car to slow down quite quickly, so it's worth being aware of. Additionally, when approaching a speed zone, it's best not to hold down the reduce button on the cruise control. Doing so can cause the car to slow down in 5 mph increments, which can be sudden and jarring. It's also worth noting that the brakes on my Acadia have been quite noisy, but the dealer has assured me that this is normal for a car with 5400 miles on it.

  2. Moriah Reichert 2024-08-14

I really enjoy my Acadia, but there is one issue that bothers me. Unfortunately, I can't leave it idling for long periods of time, which can be inconvenient during my long drives across the country. GMC has implemented a Keyless Engine Shut Off feature that automatically shuts down the vehicle after about 45 minutes of idling with the key in it, or 15 minutes with the key out. While this isn't a problem in the winter, it can get uncomfortably hot in the summer. As someone who travels frequently, I wish there was a way to disable this feature. Unfortunately, I wasn't informed of this feature when I purchased the vehicle brand new from the dealer. I may have to consider trading it in for a different model that better suits my needs.

  3. Aurelio O'Connell 2024-01-22

Congratulations on your new 2021 GMC Acadia Denali lease! However, it seems like you've been experiencing some issues with the car such as the SD card not functioning properly, the sunroof going off track and the left wheel well making a loud noise. That must be frustrating! I hope the issues get resolved soon and you can fully enjoy your new car.

Positive 2021 Gmc Acadia car reviews

  1. Kirk Stehr 2024-10-24

I just acquired a 2021 GM Acadian AT4 and I absolutely love every feature in the car. It's peppy, has multiple mode options, a fantastic interior and entertainment system, great towing capability, a smooth ride, comfortable AC system, beautiful double moonroof, and more. This car is truly amazing! I want to express my sincere gratitude to GM for making me feel good every day!

  2. Jaylon Schultz 2024-09-11

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying the spaciousness and the feel of the drive of this SUV! Even the entry level models come with great features.

  3. Barry Kunze 2024-07-29

Hi there! That's a wonderful car you have!

  4. Otho Fay 2024-06-14

Hi there! I've been driving this SUV for 10 months now and have put about 9000 miles on it. I must say, it's one of the best riding vehicles I've ever owned (and I've owned over 20 vehicles!). I opted for the 2.0 Turbo engine and it has plenty of power while still maintaining great gas mileage. On a recent trip to Ocean City, I was able to average over 34 mpg while cruising at about 70mph for 500 miles. The transmission shifts smoothly and the vehicle handles excellently during winter driving (I live in the Western New York snow belt area).

  5. Hipolito Kirlin 2024-04-17

I'm glad to hear that you've driven over 3,000 miles without any complaints! I have the same model with a V-6 and 9-speed, but unfortunately, mine didn't come with a heated steering wheel. I wish I had one, especially during the recent cold spell. Overall, it's a quiet and enjoyable driving experience. However, I did have some trouble with the jack and lug wrench that came with the vehicle when I needed to install the 'donut' tire. I had to call for road assistance. Additionally, I've noticed that the rear doors squeak when opening, and even though I tried using WD-40, it hasn't solved the issue. When I brought my vehicle to the dealer for the first oil change, they told me that the radio needs updating, but I'm not sure what that means. Let's hope it's an easy fix!
