2013 Gmc Acadia problems

gmc logo

The GMC Acadia is a crossover SUV manufactured by General Motors for its GMC division. The first-generation GMC Acadia shared the GM Lambda platform with the Saturn Outlook, the Chevrolet Traverse, and the Buick Enclave. The Acadia went on sale in 2006 as a 2007 model in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Acadia replaces three of the 7- or 8-seater vehicles on the Buick-Pontiac–GMC dealership network, the midsize GMC Safari van, the GMC Envoy, and the Pontiac Montana SV6 minivan for the domestic market. As of 2009, the Lambda vehicles have replaced the Buick Rainier, Buick Rendezvous, Buick Terraza, and the GMC Envoy XL and then subsequently the GMC Envoy, Chevrolet TrailBlazer and the Isuzu Ascender. A Denali version of the Acadia debuted for 2011. In 2017, the second generation Acadia was repositioned as a mid-size crossover utility vehicle in order to compete within the growing midsize SUV market against the likes of the Ford Explorer, Edge, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

First generation (2007)

The Acadia represents GMC's entry-level truck-like CUV and is the first unibody vehicle from the marque. It is also GMC's first front-wheel drive passenger vehicle, and also the first such vehicle of any kind since the 1973-78 GMC Motorhome.

The Acadia has seating for eight and either front or all-wheel drive. With a 5,200 lb (2,359 kg) towing capacity, the Acadia slots between the GMC Terrain and the Yukon. The Acadia is the mid-priced Lambda model between the Chevrolet Traverse and Enclave.

In December 2006, all production and sales of the Acadia (and the Saturn Outlook) were temporarily stopped due to the engine mounts not having holes drilled to release accumulated water, as well as an issue with potentially faulty rivets in the load floor just forward of the vehicle's rear hatch. The assembly process was quickly adjusted, and dealership sales of the vehicles had resumed within days of the notice.

The first-generation Acadia was sold alongside its second-generation replacement as the Acadia Limited.

Common 2013 Gmc Acadia problems

The 2013 GMC Acadia is known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include:

  • Transmission fault: The six-speed automatic transmission in the GMC Acadia may develop faults related to a broken 35R clutch wave plate within the transmission. This can lead to symptoms like slipping transmission, harsh/rough shifting, and loss of reverse gear.
  • Engine problems: Earlier Acadia models, particularly the 2008, 2010, and 2011 models, were prone to engine issues. Frustrated owners have reported that their vehicles would slow down and ultimately stop in the middle of the road, often requiring expensive engine replacement.
  • Check engine light with code: GMC Acadias powered by specific V6 engines may return one or more of the following codes: P0011, P0014, P0021, P0024, P0341, P0346, P0336, or P0391. A potential fix is a software update for the powertrain control module or PCM.
  • Faulty A/C system: Some Acadia model years struggled with a flawed A/C system with decreased cooling performance. The root cause was determined to be an evaporator leak that prevents cooling in one zone or the entire vehicle.
  • Power steering issues: The power steering system in the GMC Acadia can develop leaks, particularly in the power steering pressure line that goes from the power steering pump to the power steering rack. The power steering rack itself can also leak fluid into the boot, requiring replacement if the boot is filled with fluid .
  • Electrical glitches: Approximately a third of the complaints registered with the NHTSA for the 2013 GMC Acadia Denali are for electrical problems, with over side warning indicators blinking on even when there's no reason for it. This issue has been attributed to water leaking into the sensors, with repairs potentially costing up to $400.
  • Seat belt recalls and concerns: The 2013 GMC Acadia Denali has had recalls and concerns related to seat belts, including detached seat belts and faulty seat belt pretensioners that may cause airbags to fail to deploy in a crash. In 2019, the NHTSA ran an investigation to determine whether any further action was required due to fatigue damage that may not be recognizable from visual cues.
  • Airbag recalls: The 2013 GMC Acadia Denali has had recalls for side airbags, with more than a million GM units affected by faulty side airbag wiring connections. Many consumer complaints registered with the NHTSA mention "check airbag" lights randomly illuminating, pointing to a defective wiring harness.
  • Cable connecting the seat belt to the front seat: The cable connecting the seat belt to the front seat in the GMC Acadia can become worn and separate, not properly restraining the occupant in a crash. This issue has a low rate of incidence but has led to recalls due to its potential severity.

It's important to note that while these issues have been reported, not all 2013 GMC Acadias will experience these problems. Proper maintenance and care can help extend the vehicle's lifespan and minimize potential issues.

  • VIN: 1GKKRTKD9DJ
  • Components: AIR BAGS

It kept on like that for awhile until July 2022 when I took it to the dealers and they said they fixed it, next day the same error message. Now the dealers are lying that what they worked on was drivers seat side bag and that this time around, the issue is with the bottom part of driver's seat..... LAST YEAR, THERE WAS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST GM FOR THIS PROBLEM BUT GM WILL NOT RECALL THE FAULTY SENSOR FOR THE AIRBAGS EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE AWARE OF THIS. MY ENTIRE FAMILY'S LIFE IS IN JEOPARDY WITHOUT AIRBAGS! WHY IS THE CONSUMER RESPONSIBLE FOR A FAULTY SENSOR WHICH CONTROLS THE AIRBAGS? CAR COMPANIES SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE LIFE OF THE CAR WHEN IT HAS TO DO WITH AIRBAGS!

The items below were noted by the dealer as requiring immediate attention and estimated to cost $2,400. Current Mileage: 95,635 - AIRBAGS LR and RS Side Impact Sensor faulty. If not replaced the airbag system will not function correctly at the time of impact, preventing the airbags from deploying, and putting the passengers of the vehicle in harm's way. Warning light on dash alerts to sensor's invalid data from the sensor. - TAIL LIGHT casings fill with water causing an electrical short and the bulbs to burn out. POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-02-23
  • VIN: 1GKKVTKD3DJ
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: After having for just under a year the transmission seems to be acting up when going from 2nd to 3rd gear around 30mph to 40mph. After reading several forms it seems this is a common occurrence in these vehicles.. not sure if it’s been reported but all the forms are showing people had to spend a good amount to determine what the issue is and seems that everyone had to replace the transmissions for the problem to go away. I’m not sure how everything works but feel it should be looked at maybe.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-12-19
  • VIN: 1GKKVTKD3DJ
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: On 02/10/2022 my side warning detection monitors are both activated/lit up intrmittently while parked or driving indicating faulty operation and therefore replacement. The vehicle has around 120K miles so out of any warranty. But this will be the third or fourth time ( not original ow er so dealer has records) that this has happened. Last time in December 2020 I had an extended warranty that covered the passenger module but was not the "improved" module with some type of casing to address the corrosion causing the failures as they wanted an extra $3-400 for that part. Why they still manufacture the bad part is interesting since they have recognized they have a pro lem with the older part. Have seen other complaints that not fixing these can result in other electrical failures that can be dangerous even an electrical fire was reported from this. Obviously I feel the issue is widespread enough for a blanket recall beyond the one issued for 6 y3ears or 80K miles.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-12-09
  • VIN: 1GKKVRKDXDJ

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-05-15
  • VIN: 1GKKRSKD2DJ
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: WHEN DRIVING IN TRAFFIC AND SLOWING DOWN OR COMING TO A STOP. THE VEHICLE GOES COMPLETELY DEAD. I WILL HAVE TO RESTART AT EACH STOP. WHEN IT DOES START, IT IS NOT A SMOOTH TAKE OFF, IT IS EXTREMELY ROUGH, ALMOST LIKE A MANUAL TRANSMISSION IN THE WRONG GEAR. THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING. AND IT IS GETTING WORST EVERY DAY. I HAVE TO TRANSPORT MY FAMILY IN THIS VEHICLE AND IT IS VERY UNSAFE FOR US. I STILL HAVE A YEAR TO PAY FOR IT AND I AM HEARING MORE AND MORE CUSTOMERS WITH THE SAME COMPLAINT. THE DEALER DOESN'T WANT TO TOUCH IT, BECAUSE THEY ARE UNSURE WHAT IS WRONG, OR IF THEY CAN REPAIR IT. FRANKLY, THIS SHOULD NOT BE AN ISSUE WITH THIS MANY CARS. THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL NEAR-MISSES WITH ACCIDENTS BECAUSE OF THE CAR STALLING IN TRAFFIC.

Negative 2013 Gmc Acadia car reviews

  1. Chase Franecki 2024-11-19

Let's consider buying products made in the USA. The Acadia is a great option with a reasonable price and a timeless design. During the test drive, we loved how it handled more like a car. However, after reaching 45,000 miles, we experienced some repairs, but luckily it was still under warranty. Unfortunately, after the warranty expired, we spent $6,000 to keep it running for the next 9,000 miles. Despite these issues, the car still looks great in our driveway. Although we had some problems, we appreciate the good times we had with our GMC.

  2. Trent Littel 2024-11-14

I'm glad to hear that you love the way your vehicle rides and its fuel economy. It's unfortunate to hear that you were quoted almost $600 to replace a headlight, especially considering that the bulb itself is only about $150 and it can be a pain to replace. It sounds like the battery replacement was just as difficult. It's true that modern vehicles can be more complex to repair than older ones, but there are still many skilled mechanics who can help with basic problems. I hope you're able to find a reliable and affordable solution for your vehicle.

  3. Adolfo Huel 2024-10-18

We've put 40K miles on this car and unfortunately had to have the A/C repaired three times. Luckily, we purchased the extended warranty which has been a lifesaver. On another note, we had some trouble updating the navigation system. The dealership had to order it from the manufacturer and during the 2-hour upload, all our saved locations were wiped out. Since then, it has been malfunctioning frequently which is a bit frustrating. :(

It sounds like you had a decent ride, although it may be a bit underpowered. However, the MPG seems to be okay. On the bright side, the vehicle is very comfortable and has tons of room, even with three kids in the back. Although the seats take a while to heat up, they are still a great feature. Unfortunately, it seems that there is a big problem with carbon monoxide. This vehicle sets off alarms in your house when started in the garage (with the garage door open, of course). It's a shame that the service department is taking so long to fix the issue. With the 55k spent on the top of the line model, there were many other choices available, but it's hard to imagine them being any worse. When not thinking about the CO, the ride is still nice.

I've bought quite a few vehicles from GMC, Pontiac, Jaguar, BMW, and Cadillac over the years. However, there were two cars that I regretted purchasing new: the 2007 Jaguar XK (which was a new model of their high-performance car) and the Acadia Denali. Unfortunately, the Acadia had a few issues, such as the rubber pad on the foot-actuated emergency brake breaking off due to cheap or improper installation, and the roof leaking because of improper installation. There were also some other little things that either broke off or were improperly installed, which was disappointing. The motor was also a bit sluggish and cut out frequently. However, we've since traded it (at a loss) for a GMC Yukon, which we absolutely love!

The front seats are perfect for long trips, but unfortunately, the back seats are not suitable for adults for extended periods of time. Additionally, the seats are mostly firm, and the internal placement of the seatbelt can be uncomfortable as it digs into your hip and cannot be adjusted.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the SUV I bought as a family hauler. Living in the Pacific Northwest, I found the AWD to be really helpful in the rain. However, I did run into an issue with the Denali mode not allowing for snow chains, which unfortunately wasn't communicated to me by the dealership. I'm sharing this with you so you don't make the same mistake I did. If you plan on spending time in the snow, it might be best to avoid upgrading to the Denali model. I'm not sure if models with smaller rims would be able to accommodate chains, but it's definitely worth looking into. Let me know if you have any questions!

When we were looking for a new car, we decided to test drive an Edge at Ray Seraphin Ford. Unfortunately, they wouldn't let us because there was snow on top of the car. So, we went next door to Scranton GMC and I fell in love with their car as soon as we drove it off the lot. The Acadia had all the features we were looking for and the ride was incredibly smooth. After test driving every other comparable car, we decided on the Acadia. Since Halloween 2011, we have taken our beloved Acadia everywhere and have racked up 16,000 miles without a single problem (except for one OnStar issue, but that wasn't the car's fault). The GMC Acadia is the perfect choice for any family looking for a new crossover/SUV. Thank you for considering Scranton GMC!

$129 a month lease with no money down! Since I used my GMC points on my credit card, I was able to bump it up to $3000 plus other incentives such as conquest cash, and a change of styling for 2013. So, I've been driving the AWD SL model, which is the cheapest model made, but it has the same drivetrain as the Denali $40K+ model. It's been 30 months and I haven't had one problem with it - no squeaks or rattles! It's great in the snow, unlike RWD BMW's that couldn't get out of their way. The MPG averages 17 mix on regular gas. It rides smoothly and feels heavy, absorbing potholes. The only dislikes I have are that the plastic body works too much, the brakes are starting to show wear at 24K and feel vibrations, the seats lack support and aren't too comfortable, and the steering isn't precise. But for $129, I can't complain!

Nice looking vehicle! We're glad to hear that you're satisfied with the Acadia so far. We do have a couple of pieces of advice, though. Firstly, keep an ear out for any squeaking coming from the brake pedal. As you may have seen in many threads, this can indicate a problem with the booster, which can be fixed with a replacement. In our case, we also needed a master cylinder, which was completed at the time of purchase. Additionally, despite its appearance, the ground clearance is actually quite low, which means it can regularly contact the undercarriage (rails) on speed bumps and driveways.
