2009 Gmc Acadia problems

gmc logo

The GMC Acadia is a crossover SUV manufactured by General Motors for its GMC division. The first-generation GMC Acadia shared the GM Lambda platform with the Saturn Outlook, the Chevrolet Traverse, and the Buick Enclave. The Acadia went on sale in 2006 as a 2007 model in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Acadia replaces three of the 7- or 8-seater vehicles on the Buick-Pontiac–GMC dealership network, the midsize GMC Safari van, the GMC Envoy, and the Pontiac Montana SV6 minivan for the domestic market. As of 2009, the Lambda vehicles have replaced the Buick Rainier, Buick Rendezvous, Buick Terraza, and the GMC Envoy XL and then subsequently the GMC Envoy, Chevrolet TrailBlazer and the Isuzu Ascender. A Denali version of the Acadia debuted for 2011. In 2017, the second generation Acadia was repositioned as a mid-size crossover utility vehicle in order to compete within the growing midsize SUV market against the likes of the Ford Explorer, Edge, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

First generation (2007)

The Acadia represents GMC's entry-level truck-like CUV and is the first unibody vehicle from the marque. It is also GMC's first front-wheel drive passenger vehicle, and also the first such vehicle of any kind since the 1973-78 GMC Motorhome.

The Acadia has seating for eight and either front or all-wheel drive. With a 5,200 lb (2,359 kg) towing capacity, the Acadia slots between the GMC Terrain and the Yukon. The Acadia is the mid-priced Lambda model between the Chevrolet Traverse and Enclave.

In December 2006, all production and sales of the Acadia (and the Saturn Outlook) were temporarily stopped due to the engine mounts not having holes drilled to release accumulated water, as well as an issue with potentially faulty rivets in the load floor just forward of the vehicle's rear hatch. The assembly process was quickly adjusted, and dealership sales of the vehicles had resumed within days of the notice.

The first-generation Acadia was sold alongside its second-generation replacement as the Acadia Limited.

Common 2009 Gmc Acadia problems

The 2009 GMC Acadia is a midsize crossover SUV that has been well-received for its spacious interior, comfortable ride, and versatile cargo space. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its common problems. Here are some of the issues that 2009 GMC Acadia owners have reported:

  1. Power Steering System
The power steering system is one of the most common problems reported by 2009 GMC Acadia owners. The power steering fluid tends to run low, and it can be difficult to find where it goes under the hood. The power steering pressure line, which goes from the power steering pump to the power steering rack, is a common leak point. The power steering rack itself can also leak fluid into the boot, which may require replacement.
  2. Evap Purge Solenoid
The evap purge solenoid, which is located near the gas tank, is another common problem area. This component helps regulate the flow of fuel vapors from the gas tank to the engine. When it fails, it can cause a number of issues, including reduced fuel efficiency, difficulty starting the engine, and a check engine light.
  3. Cold Start Misfires
Some 2009 GMC Acadia owners have reported cold start misfires, which can be caused by a variety of issues, including faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or fuel injectors. These misfires can cause the engine to run rough, hesitate, or stall, especially in cold weather.
  4. Timing Chains
The timing chains in the 2009 GMC Acadia have been known to fail, especially around 150,000 miles. This can be caused by using low-quality oil or not changing the oil regularly. When the timing chain fails, it can cause the engine to misfire, run rough, or even stop running altogether.
  5. Transmission
The transmission is another common problem area for the 2009 GMC Acadia. Some owners have reported issues with shifting, slipping, or jerking, especially when the vehicle is cold. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including low transmission fluid, a faulty torque converter, or a worn-out clutch.

It's important to note that not all 2009 GMC Acadias will experience these problems, and many owners have reported few or no issues with their vehicles. However, these are some of the most common problems reported by owners, and they are worth considering when purchasing or maintaining a 2009 GMC Acadia. Regular maintenance, including oil changes, fluid checks, and inspections, can help prevent many of these issues from occurring.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-05
  • VIN: 1GKER23D79J
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The stabilizer/traction control keeps going off and it will stay off.i can turn, hit a bump or start it up and the traction control/stabilizer system is off.i almost had a accident on the freeway in the rain because it turned off out of nowhere and I almost lost control. Also I was going down the road and all of a sudden my vehicle died and I had little control over vehicle. Once it came to stop it would not start again and when attempting it sounded like something was stuck in my fan or something because of the way it rattled and sounded and was rough sounding. Vehicle was inoperable and had to be towed. Upon investigating it was the timing chain kit that had failed suddenly for no apparent reason. Vehicle was well maintained and kept accordance with running policies and practices required and suggested by manufacturer. Still the failing caused engine damage that is well in to the several thousands of dollars and engine must be replaced due to this issue failing and I have noticed several thousand people having this same very issue and rendering them a foot and vehicle less due to the high cost of fixing without any warning or engine light or code suggesting of the timing chain kit failing or about to fail before stranding a person wherever and whenever unexpectedly and suddenly without any warning or check engine light at all. No OEM code to validate the issue either. Manufacturer should be held liable for the exact same issue occuring in so many of the multitude of people experiencing the same exact issue causing financial turmoil and risk of disaster or collision and harm when the timing chain kit fails suddenly. This is a huge and vast problem I have found with multitude of Acadia owners and should be addressed because to not honor a issue of so many experiencing the same issue occuring should be reconciled and corrected at the manufacturer cost due to it being their liability in making the faulty part of device to begin with causing vast financial hardships.

SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-03
  • VIN: 1GKEV13D09J
  • Components: SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: 1.)What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? A.) To start with i went in to the dealership for a timing chain recall they said the work was performed. This was never done all they did was replace ECU from an older car so that the code would not come back (REPLACED WITH A 2002 ECU) to get rid of the timing chain recall code. this code never existed in 2002..Complete negligence these SUV could hurt or kill someone B.)Huge Electrical issue suv stops on its own while driving. Sometimes does not start at all. can not pass emission for the life of it .. new codes all the time i have replaced just about Every sensor and switch there is.. . this is a money pit and death trap.. C.) The Investigation NHTSA should have included the Lambda Frame it's the same design flaw they're trying to fix one problem with an old problem. The ones on these have this fixed tie rods, lateral arms and upper control arms the bushings will wear out eventually and repeat the bouncing up and down rocking back and forth rear end barely staying on the ground it's a very dangerous ride and you see these vehicles on the expressway on a daily basis you look at them for what you know now I get really nervous seeing these vehicles. Arcadia rollovers Call it what you will it's the same problem the needs a total redesign it's defective anyway you look at it. Just looking to how many Roll over there are with this body frame and suspension it's got its own self-contained pit maneuver. I believe GM is aware of these issues that's why they're giving everybody a hard time to fix it they run and say something else. Looks like we're getting back to too big to fail. D.) What makes this vehicle even more unsafe and very dangerous is the fact that the reluctor wheel can slip. This will sundown false DTC codes thinking that problems exist other places spending lots of money an unnecessary work when along GM knew about this problem once again.

2015-06-30
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: STRUCTURE:BODY:HATCHBACK/LIFTGATE
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 Buick Enclave vehicles manufactured January 3, 2007, to February 29, 2012, 2009-2012 Chevrolet Traverse vehicles manufactured July 6, 2008, to March 9, 2012, 2007-2012 GMC Acadia vehicles manufactured September 15, 2006, to February 29, 2012, and 2007-2010 Saturn Outlook vehicles manufactured August 17, 2006, to March 18, 2010. The affected vehicles, equipped with the power liftgate option, have gas struts that hold the power liftgate up when open. These struts may prematurely wear and the open liftgate may suddenly fall.
  • Consequence: If the open liftgate unexpectedly falls, it may strike a person, increasing their risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will update the software for the power liftgate actuator motor control unit so that the motor will prevent the rapid closing of the lift gate, free of charge. The recall began on November 15, 2016. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, and Saturn customer service at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for this recall is 15240.

In the affected vehicles, increased resistance in the driver and passenger seat mounted side impact air bag (SIAB) wiring harnesses may result in the SIAB and seat belt pretensioners not deploying in the event of a crash.
  • Consequence: Failure of the side impact air bags and seat belt pretensioners to deploy in a crash increase the risk of injury to the driver and front seat occupant.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected harness connections with soldered connections, free of charge. The recall began on June 16, 2014. Buick owners may contact the owner center at 1-800-521-7300, Chevrolet owners at 1-866-694-6546, Saturn at 1-800-553-6000, and GMC owners at 1-866-996-9463. GM's number for this recall is 14030. Note: Vehicles repaired as part of Customer Satisfaction Campaign 10085 and special coverage 10335 have already had the subject condition repaired and therefore are not included in the safety recall.

  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009-2010 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE, BUICK ENCLAVE, GMC ACADIA, AND SATURN OUTLOOK VEHICLES. THE SECOND ROW SEAT SIDE TRIM SHIELD RESTRICTS THE UPWARD ROTATION OF THE SAFETY BELT BUCKLE WHEN THE SEAT BACK IS RETURNED TO A SEATING POSITION AFTER BEING FOLDED FLAT. IF THE BUCKLE CONTACTS THE SEAT FRAME, ADDITIONAL EFFORT IS REQUIRED TO RETURN THE SEAT TO A SEATING POSITION. IF SUFFICIENT FORCE IS APPLIED, THE BUCKLE COVER COULD BE PUSHED DOWN THE STRAP, EXPOSING AND PARTIALLY DEPRESSING THE RED RELEASE BUTTON.
  • Consequence: THE SAFETY BELT MAY NOT RESTRAIN THE OCCUPANT AS INTENDED DURING A CRASH, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE SEAT OCCUPANT.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE SECOND ROW SEAT SIDE TRIM SHIELDS. IF A SAFETY BELT BUCKLE IS DAMAGED, DEALERS WILL REPLACE IT FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 18, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, AND SATURN AT 1-800-972-8876, OR AT THE OWNER CENTER AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: GM IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006-2009 BUICK, LUCERNE; CADILLAC DTS; HUMMER H2; MODEL YEAR 2008-2009 BUICK ENCLAVE; CADILLAC CTS; MODEL YEAR 2007-2009 CADILLAC ESCALADE, ESCALADE ESV, ESCALADE EXT; CHEVROLET AVALANCHE, SILVERADO, SUBURBAN, TAHOE; GMC ACADIA, SIERRA, YUKON, YUKON XL; SATURN OUTLOOK; AND MODEL YEAR 2009 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A HEATED WASHER FLUID SYSTEM (HWFS). A RECALL WAS IMPLEMENTED IN 2008 TO ADD A FUSE TO THE CONTROL CIRCUIT HARNESS TO ADDRESS THE POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES OF A PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD (PCB) ELECTRICAL SHORT. HOWEVER, THERE HAVE BEEN NEW REPORTS OF THERMAL INCIDENTS ON HWFS MODULES AFTER THIS IMPROVEMENT WAS INSTALLED. THESE INCIDENTS RESULTED FROM A NEW FAILURE MODE ATTRIBUTED TO THE DEVICE'S THERMAL PROTECTION FEATURE. THE SIGNIFICANCE VARIES FROM MINOR DISTORTION TO CONSIDERABLE MELTING OF THE PLASTIC AROUND THE HWFS FLUID CHAMBER.
  • Consequence: IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE HEATED WASHER MODULE TO IGNITE AND A FIRE MAY OCCUR.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL PERMANENTLY DISABLE AND REMOVE THE HEATED WASHER FLUID MODULE. AN UPDATED PAGE FOR THE OWNER MANUAL WILL BE PROVIDED AND INSERTED IN THE OWNER MANUAL TO DOCUMENT THAT THE FEATURE HAS BEEN PERMANENTLY DISABLED AND REMOVED FROM THE VEHICLE. THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLES SAFETY STANDARD 102, "TRANSMISSION SHIFT POSITION SEQUENCE, STARTER INTERLOCK, AND TRANSMISSION BRAKING EFFECT", AND FMVSS 114, "THEFT PROTECTION AND ROLLAWAY PREVENTION". ON SOME OF THESE VEHICLES, THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT CABLE ADJUSTMENT CLIP MAY NOT BE FULLY ENGAGED. IF THE CLIP IS NOT FULLY ENGAGED, THE SHIFT LEVER AND THE ACTUAL POSITION OF THE TRANSMISSION GEAR MAY NOT MATCH. WITH THIS CONDITION, THE DRIVE COULD MOVE THE SHIFTER TO "PARK" AND REMOVE THE IGNITION KEY, BUT THE TRANSMISSION GEAR MAY NOT BE IN "PARK".
  • Consequence: THE DRIVER MAY NOT BE ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND THE VEHICLE COULD ROLL AWAY AFTER THE DRIVER HAS EXITED THE VEHICLE, RESULTING IN A POSSIBLE CRASH WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND ENSURE THAT THE SHIFT CABLE ADJUSTMENT CLIP IS FULLY ENGAGED. IN THE EVENT THAT THE CLIP DOES NOT ENGAGE, THE SHIFT CABLE WILL BE REPLACED FREE OF CHARGE. Negative 2009 Gmc Acadia car reviews

  1. Forest Upton 2025-01-01

I purchased my 2009 Acadia in March 2009. Although I have had some issues with the rack and pinion, seatbelt sensor, tire sensor, keyless remote, frame around 2nd row seats, and inside part of front driver/passenger door, I have found that these issues are not covered by the limited bumper to bumper warranty. Despite these challenges, I still believe that the Acadia is a quality vehicle with many great features. It is important to carefully review the warranty before making a purchase to fully understand what is covered.

  2. Eusebio Emard 2024-09-26

Looks great on the outside. However, I was disappointed with the quality of the interior, including the dash, seats, doors, and door handles. The visibility out of the rear window is not great, so it's important to have sensors and a backup monitor. I had to upgrade to better quality leather seats, a CD player, and install a backup monitor due to visibility issues just two weeks after purchase.

We purchased our Acadia in 2013 with only 30k miles, one owner, and a clean record. Unfortunately, we experienced some issues within the first month, such as a leaking sunroof, power steering failure, and a bad timing belt. We also had some problems with the fuel injectors while on a road trip, which was quite scary. Over the years, we have had to deal with several other repairs, including the computer motherboard, spark plugs, coils, struts, and continuous recalls. Despite spending $28k on the car, we have probably paid another $20k in repairs. Last year, we had to replace the Cat Converter, engine mount, front axel, and fix the transmission and coils. Although we have kept the car due to the amount we have invested in it, we know that we will not get much for it on a trade. We have been told by multiple mechanics that they see more 2009 Acadia's in their shops than any other vehicle and that GMC should have never released these for sale. As a loyal GM buyer, we are disappointed with our experience with the Acadia and hope that they will improve their quality control in the future.

  4. Jessy Powlowski 2024-06-24

Very unreliable car. I have had it for over 3 years now and have experienced several issues, including the need to replace the steering gear box and purge solenoid (part of the exhaust system), a leak in the moon roof, and having to replace two struts at 50k miles. Unfortunately, I also had to replace the transmission at 55k miles. This has been the worst car I have ever owned. I am disappointed with the poor response from GM, as they seem to care very little about customer satisfaction. Due to my experience, I will not be purchasing another GM product again.

It sounds like you've had a few issues with your car, with it needing to go to the shop every few months for various repairs. From ignition coils to plugs and wires, and now even the timing chain. On top of that, the transmission doesn't seem to have much power or response. However, there are some positives to the car, such as its size, comfort, and safety features. With all-wheel drive and a wide base, it feels like a small tank on the road. Overall, it seems like a mixed bag, but hopefully the positives outweigh the negatives for you.

Positive 2009 Gmc Acadia car reviews

  1. Garnett Franecki 2024-11-02

I have been thoroughly stunned by the ride of this crossover. It may be pricey, but it's definitely worth the money. I think GM should consider adding some extras to keep their customers happy, such as seat memory as a standard feature on SLTs. The turning radius and fuel efficiency were both very good. I even managed to get up to 27 MPG at 59 MPH on the freeway. Overall, I've driven about 400 miles so far and I'm very satisfied.

  2. Alec Gerhold 2024-10-02

After test driving other vehicles in this class, such as the MDX, Highlander, Pilot, and Edge, I found that this vehicle surpassed them all for various reasons. What sealed the deal for me were the kids; aged 4 and 9. The size, safety features, design, and toys (a must-have for us) were the best. I previously owned a 2005 Escalade, which couldn't compare to this, and the Acadia has even more space in and behind the third row. I am absolutely loving this truck!

  3. Ryann Berge 2024-09-17

This is one of my favorite cars I have ever owned. With 3 kids, it's great that they can watch a movie while I listen to the radio. The ride is terrific too. Although the Navigation system is nice, it can sometimes suggest some funky routes. I find that my Garmin hand-held device is more accurate at times. I also have the backup camera, which is a lifesaver when it comes to parking. It gets you into spots nicely!

  4. Donnie Harber 2024-09-15

I appreciate the previous reviewer's feedback regarding the front seat headrest design. It's worth noting that this is my wife's car, and we were drawn to it because of the AWD feature, which proved to be very useful during the winter months. I was pleasantly surprised by how quiet the interior is. While the gas mileage isn't exceptional, it's comparable to what we experienced with our previous Grand Caravan. It's important to note that this vehicle is wider than most, which can make parking in tight spaces a bit of a challenge and may result in door dings.

  5. Urban Larson 2024-09-11

The car has a good feature set and a zippy engine. However, there are some concerns with the throttle lag and the inability of the transmission/engine to hold on even the slightest slope, which can make the car feel dangerous. If stopped on a slight slope while in D, the car may drift back unless you are on the gas or brake, which can be challenging. It's important to be diligent when driving to avoid drifting backward into whatever is behind. Although this problem is not unique to the Acadia, it's still something to be aware of. Additionally, the transmission can be easy to panic if you floor it, which can cause it to shift to a low gear beyond the power curve, resulting in slow acceleration. Overall, the car has some great features, but it's important to be aware of these issues when driving.
