2020 Gmc Acadia problems
The GMC Acadia is a crossover SUV manufactured by General Motors for its GMC division. The first-generation GMC Acadia shared the GM Lambda platform with the Saturn Outlook, the Chevrolet Traverse, and the Buick Enclave. The Acadia went on sale in 2006 as a 2007 model in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Acadia replaces three of the 7- or 8-seater vehicles on the Buick-Pontiac–GMC dealership network, the midsize GMC Safari van, the GMC Envoy, and the Pontiac Montana SV6 minivan for the domestic market. As of 2009, the Lambda vehicles have replaced the Buick Rainier, Buick Rendezvous, Buick Terraza, and the GMC Envoy XL and then subsequently the GMC Envoy, Chevrolet TrailBlazer and the Isuzu Ascender. A Denali version of the Acadia debuted for 2011. In 2017, the second generation Acadia was repositioned as a mid-size crossover utility vehicle in order to compete within the growing midsize SUV market against the likes of the Ford Explorer, Edge, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
First generation (2007)
The Acadia represents GMC's entry-level truck-like CUV and is the first unibody vehicle from the marque. It is also GMC's first front-wheel drive passenger vehicle, and also the first such vehicle of any kind since the 1973-78 GMC Motorhome.
The Acadia has seating for eight and either front or all-wheel drive. With a 5,200 lb (2,359 kg) towing capacity, the Acadia slots between the GMC Terrain and the Yukon. The Acadia is the mid-priced Lambda model between the Chevrolet Traverse and Enclave.
In December 2006, all production and sales of the Acadia (and the Saturn Outlook) were temporarily stopped due to the engine mounts not having holes drilled to release accumulated water, as well as an issue with potentially faulty rivets in the load floor just forward of the vehicle's rear hatch. The assembly process was quickly adjusted, and dealership sales of the vehicles had resumed within days of the notice.
The first-generation Acadia was sold alongside its second-generation replacement as the Acadia Limited.

Common 2020 Gmc Acadia problems
The 2020 GMC Acadia has some common problems reported by owners, which include dead batteries, excessive engine noise, and stereo system issues. These problems are similar to other midsize SUVs from the same year, leading to average repair costs as the Acadia ages.
Dead batteries are the most widespread complaint from 2020 Acadia owners, showing up at around 5,000 miles. There are a lot of electrical accessories in the Acadia, and some of them may stay on even when the engine is off. Diagnosing the source of the parasitic electrical draw costs around $50, while fixing it can cost $5 to $250.
Excessive engine noise has also been mentioned by some 2020 GMC Acadia owners within the first 20,000 miles. The purge valve is a known weak spot in the Acadia, and can make a lot of noise. Replacing the purge valve, fortunately, is a quick process, only costing about $150 to fix.
Stereo system issues also show up on some Acadia models at roughly 1,500 miles. There are software updates available for the stereo, which improves reliability. Most dealerships will install these updates for free, while others charge around $50 for labor.
In addition to these issues, the 2020 GMC Acadia has six recalls, which is worse than some other midsize SUVs. The most serious recall covers missing bolts on the start/stop accumulator, which can cause the engine to stall. GMC will replace the bolts on affected models for free. Other recalls include the rearview camera, tires, roof rails, and fuel pumps. GMC will change out those parts for free, too.
It is important to note that the 2020 GMC Acadia is generally considered a reliable SUV, with no widespread complaints. However, it is recommended to avoid models from 2017-2018, which have a lot of transmission issues. Models from 2019-2022 are more dependable choices.
Does 2020 GMC Acadia have transmission problems?
The manufacturer previously released a GMC Acadia torque converter recall in 2020 due to missing bolts in the start stop accumulator endcap which could lead to a transmission oil leak. However, the 2020 recall primarily affects 2019-2020 GMC Acadia models, and is unrelated to the most recent recall.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-15
- VIN: 1GKKNMLS5LZ
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Once again (for the second time in a few months) the vehicle put me and my passenger in an extremely dangerous situation. We were driving down a 55mph country highway catching speed, somewhere around 45-50 mph and the car jerked so violently that it shook us even though we had our seat belts on. It then made a weird noise and felt like it was powering down so I stepped on the accelerator to try to bring it back up to speed and it sped up a little bit, jerked again (not as violently) and turned off. Luckily, since it was a country hwy and no cars were coming, I was able to coast into a driveway. I attempted to restart the car to turn around and go home but as soon as i put it in gear, it would shut off. I tried a few times and it would make a "tick tick, tick" sound but not start. I waited a few minutes and tried again and was able to get it to start, go in reverse and get back home. Once I got home it would not start again. Mechanic says it is the same issue and before, which was also part of a recall for this vehicle having to do with the fuel pump relay. I will be trying to tow this vehicle to the dealership for repair.

This SAFETY ISSUE increases risk of incidents resulting in injury and/or property damage while the vehicle is in reverse. I understand there already exists a NHTSA RECALL (NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V709000) however, it states that only vehicles equipped with the optional Surround Vision feature are affected. My vehicle does not have the 360 Surround Vision (RPO UV2). but is experiencing the same SAFETY ISSUE!
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-06
- VIN: 1GKKNMLS5LZ
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The car would not start. It would power on but would not turn over. We had it checked out by a mechanic who tested it and found that the fuel pump module was not operable. When he went to replace it, he found that the one he was removing was aftermarket so this issue had happened before, apparently, before we bought it. We bought it with only 24k miles so it needing to be replaced that early is concerning. And now at around 50k it had to be replaced again. Researching this issue, I have found many folks reporting similar situations. This needs to be investigated.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-16
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1GKKNRL4XLZ
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I bought my car [XXX] it had 7 miles. I loved my car. Then in January 2021 things just went crazy. It started with park light on. My forward brake assist warning didn’t work, my back up camera in and out . My braking and stability were on and off. Then weird codes like. Engine at half power, unable to shift soon and speed control out. Then if I hit a bump message went away and speed control back on. I’ve taken care into another GMC dealer because dealer I bought my car at , closed up and took off!! Took it to closet dealer. Not long after repairs same issues started! So many different problems all at once! I have been treated horribly during these issues by dealership and extended warranty company. Dealer had my car for 3 weeks ! They couldn’t figure out the problem. I sat there for 4 hrs sent me home told to come back for 9 mile test! Why in 4 hrs that wasn’t done. So again the unable to shift message back on! I get in my car it starts but won’t shift ! Dealer charged me 250 to tow to shop! When they said I’d be fine ! I had more issues again and again! I’ve been driving over 40 yrs no accidents. I bumped into someone during a huge traffic jam in Ohio! Braking didn’t work no warning even . I should speak to a lawyer and could explain more to a person on filing these complaints. People are talking about the cost being between $1100-2400 to fix. There is a service bulletin out about this issue(17-NA-158) May 2017 If GMC knows that this is a problem why are they not recalling them?? My car was purchased brand new and of course is out of warranty like most others(the extended warranty doesn’t cover it either) GMC needs to recall these vehicles and fix this issue!!!!!

- VIN: 1GKKNULS0LZ
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: GMC safety recall was issued in Sept. 2022. (N222378380) My backup camera (2020 GMC Acadia) has been going in and mostly out since Jan. 2021. GMC has yet to find a fix for this issue, about 4 months since the recall but almost a year and a half for my car. I have had it in for service 3-4 times and thy can't fix it. It is a safety issue as we depend heavily on the camera to back up and the front camera to avoid hitting objects. We have had a few close calls but no damage, YET. I have had numerous conversations with GMC and my dealer. I keep getting the same answers. They can't (parts, no know fix, whatever) and won't do anything to fix the problem. I have been without this highly priced option for almost 2 years. Someone needs to get their act together. this is too long of a time to have this problem still exist..

LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-08
- VIN: 1GKKNRLS8LZ
- Components: LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: SIDE BLIND ZONE SYSTEM TEMPORARIALLY UNAVAILABLE message displayed in DIC, and system does not function. I can not rely on the system as it very often does this. This issue started on 12/08/2022. I feel that I am at risk of a crash as I rely on this system for blind spot detection. There are MANY forums that state that MANY other 2020 GMC Acadia's have this issue. I feel like this is a GM issue, and the consumer should not be left with the cost of any repair, if necessary. This is a safety risk and could result in death from a crash due to a failure of a safety system.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-21
- VIN: 1GKKNMLS5LZ
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I started receiving an error message that driver assist is reduced drive with car at 50k miles (i have an onstar diagnostic report and phone call made that day). It shut my car down and activated the parking break. I called Onstar at that moment it happened and they found nothing wrong with the car. It continued to happened several times after and each time I took it to the dealer they were unable to diagnose the problem. One time I was told there was a bulletin on it from GM, but not for the year of my car so they were not able to make the repair. When it finally started giving me the error all the time, they finally found it was the thermostat - $1600 and GM would not cover the part under warranty because I now had over the warranty miles even though it happened and was reported prior to that point. I have several people tell me with the same vehicle they too are having the problem - and it is costing each consumer $1600. GM knows it is a problem because it is all over the internet. There should be a recall and our costs reimbursed if we have had to make the repairs on our own.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-16
- VIN: 1GKKNXLS4LZ
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The vehicle’s lock/unlock feature is inoperable either via the buttons on the door inside the vehicle or via the key fob. There is no manual way to lock/unlock the vehicle from inside the vehicle. Driver and passengers could only exit vehicle via rear lift gate or thru the vehicle windows. Should driver or passengers have had mobility issues or not been able to crawl through the vehicle to exit via the tailgate, they would not have been able to exit the vehicle in the event of any emergency. Incident has happened on at least 3 separate occasions.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-20
- VIN: 1GKKNPLS6LZ
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The Automatic braking assist feature goes off at times when there is no threat of hitting something. It happens when pulling into a garage and also on the road while driving. There have been several occasions when this happened and the car suddenly brakes which could have resulted in being rear-ended. The car suddenly brakes even if there is no danger of running into a car (or garage) in front of me. It has not been inspected (yet) but it seems to be increasingly becoming more of an issue lately. There were no warning lamps or messages just the sudden, hard-braking and loud noise/buzzing it makes when it happens. There have been several occasions but I'm listing the most recent one below.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-05
- VIN: 1GKKNXLS8LZ
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Twice this vehicle has exhibited this behavior. The collision avoidance system would flash a red warning on the HUD showing that a pedestrian was in front of the vehicle with the vehicle brakes 'hard' engaging causing the vehicle to 'nose dive' even though there was no pedestrian in front of the vehicle. This is disconcerting to those inside the vehicle and potentially be a crash issue with any vehicle following to close behind my Acadia. This may be an issue with the sensors/software used by GM and thus a safety issue that should be reviewed.

This vehicle is good looking and our new Denali has all the intelligent options. Make sure to have your sales rep go over how to set up all the functions you want to activate, that will save you a lot of time. My wife and I love our new Acadia Denali!

So glad to hear that you're enjoying your vehicle! It sounds like it has a smooth ride, comfortable seating, and is easy to get in and out of. Even with moderate stop and go traffic on city streets, you're still averaging around 23 mpg with the 3.6 L V6. That's impressive!

The ergonomics are great. It's a very comfortable ride. We, as average sized people, have plenty of room. The safety features are helpful and I highly recommend them. The touch screen controls are augmented by traditional buttons, all of which are easy to use. Handling is very good. I thoroughly enjoy driving this SUV.

My 2020 Acadia SLT has everything! It's got plenty of power, a well-laid-out cabin, and all the creature comforts you could want. The cargo space is ample, especially with the 3rd row seats down. It handles like a dream and has great manners on the road. The exterior is beautiful, with just the right amount of chrome and the perfect wheels to round out the package. I can only give it two thumbs up (I only have two hands!). GMC, you hit the bull's eye with this one. The Acadia SLT with V-6 FWD and 9-speed automatic transmission is the complete package.

My model is a SLE with the 3.6 6 cyl. which isn't listed under the model category. However, I've had my GMC for about 3 months now and I have no complaints. It has plenty of room and is very comfortable. The 6 cyl. engine provides ample power to move quickly. So far, through 2 snowstorms, it has performed flawlessly in AWD mode. The heated seats are a nice option and the remote start is a must-have. I don't use the 3rd row seats, so there is plenty of storage space with them stowed flat. The styling is nice, but I'd like to get rid of the roof rails. The fit and finish are nice, and so far, I have had no problems. I'm glad that I can change my own oil with the filter located in an easy-to-reach spot.

Despite the initial issues with the vehicle, I am confident in its potential. The dealership was able to fix the problem and I am grateful for their assistance. While there were some additional codes that were not addressed, I am optimistic that they can be resolved. Although the horn honked unexpectedly and the security system was activated, I believe these are minor issues that can be easily addressed. While it may not have been the smoothest start, I am confident that this vehicle has a lot of potential. I am currently weighing my options and considering the best course of action moving forward.

I leased the 2013 and 2016 Acadia Denali, and just last week, I leased the 2019 model. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a big mistake. I rushed into it without realizing that they had removed many of the features that I enjoyed in my previous models. For example, the front seatbelts no longer adjust to your size, which means that they constantly rub against your neck. Additionally, the outside mirrors are no longer power-operated, and the knobs on the dashboard look cheap. The roof is much lower, which makes it feel like you're driving a car, and the driver's seat is now uncomfortable and narrow. The interior has very little storage space, and the middle console is small. Although the vehicle drives decently, I'm paying a lot more money for a lot less. However, I have to say that the one positive is that it does drive decently.

I had a 2016 Acadia and absolutely loved it. Without doing too much research, I decided to go with another Acadia without realizing how much it has changed. However, I was disappointed to find out that the 2019 version is much narrower and less smooth than the previous model. It is also much louder and has less horsepower, making it difficult to get up hills. It is now more comparable to a crossover SUV that I had years ago. The changes made to the new model were not improvements and have destroyed the great old model.

Unfortunately, the 2020 model I wanted wasn't in stock, so it was delivered instead. Although I was hoping to buy American, I encountered some issues with the features of my vehicle. Despite paying for the Heads Up Display feature, it was missing the necessary hardware. Similarly, another 2020 owner I spoke to had missing hardware for the emergency collision braking feature. Additionally, I have noticed that the lane change alert and emergency braking features do not seem to work properly, as they do not detect when I leave the lane or come too close to the vehicle in front of me most of the time. I have brought these issues to the attention of the dealership, but so far they have been unable to provide an explanation or resolution. On a more minor note, I was disappointed to discover that the big flat surface between the GPS buttons was not a touch pad, and the GPS screen looks dated compared to other vehicles with a large flush glass panel. The gaps between the interior panels are also too noticeable, and only the driver's floor mat has a hook to hold it in place. The shuddering from the start stop feature is extremely noticeable, so I have disabled it. While there is a nob that allows the driver to switch between 2wd and 4wd, there is no setting for intuitive AWD that stays in 2wd and switches to 4wd when slip is detected. Finally, I feel that the pricing for this model is higher than what I consider superior models such as Subaru, KIA, and Hyundai. Despite these issues, I hope that other 2020 owners have a better experience.

I purchased the SLE AWD V6 vehicle in October 2020 and have driven 8,000 miles so far. It's the perfect size for us and has a quiet, smooth ride compared to other competitors like the Explorer. Although I hadn't owned a GM vehicle in over 20 years, the pricing and discounts were great at the time. We opted for the lower trim since we only intend to use it for a few years running kids around town to their events, so we didn't need all the extras. I'm very happy with the ride and drive so far. However, there are a few things that could be improved. The interior is a bit cheap and has some rattles. There's a rattle coming from the driver's side window in cold weather that no one could figure out. The second-row sunroof shade doesn't close all the way and rattles as well. I had it in to the dealership for this, but it didn't get fixed. I have to leave the shade open so it doesn't drive me nuts. The factory tires aren't the greatest and have poor traction. Even in AWD, the traction in the snow was poor compared to past SUVs I've owned. I had read the reviews and didn't have unrealistic expectations when I bought this vehicle, but I didn't expect the interior rattles in a 2020 model from any manufacturer! In retrospect, I should probably have spent $8K more and bought the Highlander or Palisade, but it is what it is at this point. In two years, my youngest will be driving, and I will have this Acadia paid off, so I will likely be moving on to something a little better.
