While not as long-running as the Bonneville, Grand Prix, and Firebird nameplates, Pontiac would use the Sunbird nameplate for 17 model years. After the Sunbird skipped the 1981 model year entirely, it was released as an early 1982 and renamed the J2000; the Sunbird name was returned for 1984. For 1995, the Sunbird underwent a substantial model update and was renamed the Pontiac Sunfire.

I purchased my Sunbird new in 1992 and it has been a reliable companion ever since. This car has been my trusty ride to and from work, even in heavy traffic conditions. The fuel injected four cylinder engine, coupled with a five speed manual transmission, provides plenty of power and makes driving a fun experience. Over the years, I have replaced the alternator twice and the timing belt once, but it still runs like a dream. Even after eleven years of solid service, it still gets great gas mileage and looks fantastic.

I bought this car with only 16K miles and it was in near perfect condition. Unfortunately, it was sideswiped in an accident and never quite recovered. Despite a series of less-than-competent body and engine mechanics, and 60K miles, the car is still so-so. The body is still in good shape and the engine runs pretty well with the proper plugs. Before the accident, I absolutely loved this car, except for the seats which weren't too comfortable for long drives. It's okay for highway driving, but the mileage isn't great due to its weight. However, the weight is a good thing as it probably saved my life in the accident. The big lesson I learned is to find a GOOD mechanic. One who doesn't know what they're doing can ruin your engine.

What a great little car! It's amazing how reliable it has been over the years. My Father in Law bought it used in '92 and had absolutely no trouble with it. I inherited it with 100,000 miles and have put an additional 36,000 on it. Although it sat for about a year before I got it, I was able to replace the timing belt, alternator and the rear axle for only $500 including labor. It's been a fantastic car, great on gas and has never let me down. I use it to drive 300 mile round trip once a week and around town. Although it rides a little rough and could use some new shocks, it's still going strong at 136,000 miles!
