1991 Ford F-350 problems

The Ford Super Duty (also known as the Ford F-Series Super Duty) is a series of heavy-duty pickup trucks produced by the Ford Motor Company since the 1999 model year. Slotted above the consumer-oriented Ford F-150, the Super Duty trucks are an expansion of the Ford F-Series range, from F-250 to the F-600. The F-250 through F-450 are offered as pickup trucks, while the F-350 through F-600 are offered as chassis cabs.

Rather than adapting the lighter-duty F-150 truck for heavier use, Super Duty trucks have been designed as a dedicated variant of the Ford F-Series. The heavier-duty chassis components allow for heavier payloads and towing capabilities. With a GVWR over 8,500 lb (3,900 kg), Super Duty pickups are Class 2 and 3 trucks, while chassis-cab trucks are offered in Classes 3, 4, 5, and 6. The model line also offers Ford Power Stroke V8 diesel engines as an option.

Ford also offers a medium-duty version of the F-Series (F-650 and F-750), which is sometimes branded as the Super Duty, but is another chassis variant. The Super Duty pickup truck also served as the basis for the Ford Excursion full-sized SUV.

The Super Duty trucks and chassis-cabs are assembled at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky, and at Ohio Assembly in Avon Lake, Ohio. Prior to 2016, medium-duty trucks were assembled in Mexico under the Blue Diamond Truck joint venture with Navistar International.

Common 1991 Ford F-350 problems

The 1991 Ford F-350, like many other vehicles, has its share of common problems reported by owners. Here are some of the issues that have been identified:

  • Alternator Belt Issues: On 1990 to 1994 model F-150s, the alternator belt has been the subject of numerous complaints. A telltale sign of trouble is when the engine makes chirping or squealing noises, which can indicate that the pulley for the air conditioner or the power-steering is askew.
  • Automatic Transmission Problems: The transmission in 1994-1995 model F-150s can fall out of alignment if the TR/MLP sensor is faulty. This can cause the engine to flare as the truck is shifted into fourth gear. On 1990-1993 models, flare-up issues with the transmission have also been reported, particularly when shifting between the second and third gears. This issue has been attributed to distorted valve plates.
  • Ball Joints: On 1990-1996 Ford F-150s, including the F-350, the ball joints have been particularly vulnerable to water exposure. If exposed, the ball joints are liable to expire prematurely, which can lead to reduced handling and safety risks.
  • Hard Starting: Drivers have reported complaints of hard-starting on 1990-1996 model F-150s, including the F-350. This issue has been attributed to faulty harness wiring in the power control module, which can cause symptoms such as vehicular stalling, hesitation, and failure to start.
  • Recalls: The 1991 Ford F-350 has been subject to numerous recalls, with the largest recall occurring in 1999. The common problems for this model include Equipment, Electrical, Fuel System, Lighting, Tires, Brakes, Engine, Seats, Transmission, Structure, Air Bags, Steering, Visibility, Doors, and Frame.
  • Swollen and Stuck Lug Nuts: Some F-350 owners have reported issues with swollen and stuck lug nuts, which can make it difficult to remove the wheels and perform maintenance tasks.
  • Transmission Issues: Some 1991 Ford F-350 owners have reported issues with the transmission, particularly with the E4OD transmission. These issues can include the transmission not shifting into overdrive, which may be caused by a faulty OD solenoid or a problem with the transmission computer.

These issues can vary in severity and frequency, and some may be more common than others. If you own a 1991 Ford F-350, it's important to stay up-to-date on recalls and to address any issues as soon as they arise to ensure the safety and reliability of your vehicle.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-07-26
  • VIN: 2FTJW35M4MC
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: ABOUT AUGUST 2012 I WAS INFORMED BY PETTIS TIRES, CORDELE, GA. THAT THE TWO TIRES I HAD BOUGHT FROM THEM HAD BEEN RECALLED. FOR APPROX. ONE YEAR WE TRADED PHONE CALLS AND NO PROGRESS WAS MADE. I CALLED BF GOODRICH CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WAS TOLD TO GO TO SEARS AUTO IN ALBANY, GA. THAT LASTED ABOUT THREE WEEKS, SAID THEY WERE UNABLE TO GET REPLACEMENTS. CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE AGAIN THEY SENT ME TO SUNRISE FORD, SYLVESTER, GA. SUNRISE SAID THEY WOULD REPLACE THEM IF THEY KNEW THEY WOULD BE REIMBURSED. SO FAR NO AGENCY HAS BEEN WILLING TO GET THE REPLACEMENTS OR ARE UNSURE ABOUT REIMBURSEMENT. I WAS EVEN TOLD BY PETIS TIRES IN CORDELE, GA. TO WAIT AS LONG AS I CAN BECAUSE THESE ARE FREE MILES ON BAD TIRES. THE ORIGINAL LETTER FROM BF GOODRICH IN JULY 2012 RECOMMENDED GETTING THESE TIRES OFF THE ROAD AS SOON AS POSSIBLE BECAUSE OF "TREAD LOSS AND/OR RAPID AIR LOSS RESULTING FROM TREAD BELT SEPARATION". NOT MY IDEA OF GETTING FREE MILES ON RECALLED TIRES. TWO CALLS TO CUSTOMER SERVICE, THREE RECOMMENDED DEALERS, AND NO CALLS BACK, NO TIRES. NO PROBLEM, THESE ARE FREE MILES. CUSTOMER SERVICE BF GOODRICH 1-800-637-5527. PETTIS TIRE, CORDELE GA. 229-273-1153. FOR ONE YEAR THEY WOULD NOT ACKNOWLEDGE MY REQUESTS. SAID THEY WOULD CALL THEIR SUPPLIER. PROVIDED THE REASSURANCE THAT THESE ARE FREE MILES. SEARS AUTO CENTER, ALBANY GA. 229-434-4328. I DROVE 1 HOUR BECAUSE ON THE PHONE HE SAID HE COULD TAKE CARE OF IT. THREE WEEKS LATER HE WAS STILL BEING SENT THE WRONG TIRES FROM HIS SUPPLIER. SUNBELT FORD, SYLVESTER, GA. 229-776-7691. DID NOT KNOW OF ANY RECALL, WILL CALL BACK. NEXT DAY THEY ASSURED ME THERE WAS A RECALL. THEY WOULD NOT ACT UNTIL THEY WERE SURE THEY WOULD BE REIMBURSED. FURTHER CALLS WENT NOWHERE. IN THE ORIGINAL RECALL NOTICE OFJULY 2012 BF GOODRICH SUGGESTS THAT IF "BF GOODRICH RETAILER FAILS OR IS UNABLE TO PROVIDE THE SERVICE AS DESCRIBED ABOVE WITHOUT CHARGE...YOU MAY SUBMIT A COMPLAINT TO THE ADMINISTRATOR NHTSA". *TR

Positive 1991 Ford F-350 car reviews

  1. Duncan Swaniawski 2024-11-05

This truck is amazing! The 7.5L V8 is incredibly powerful (for a gas engine) and extremely reliable. It can easily handle a beating and tows our 29 foot Nomad fifth-wheel travel trailer with ease. While the vinyl seating is tough, it can be a bit uncomfortable. Overall, I highly recommend the F-350 SRW Crew Cab Truck to anyone!

  2. Nickolas Cassin 2024-04-27

I have owned my truck since 2012 and it has been an absolute beast. Despite its hard life as a parks and service rig for Douglas County Nevada, it has never let me down. With its 5-speed manual transmission and 4x4 capabilities, it can pass anything on the road and haul loads that I probably shouldn't have attempted. I remember one time when I loaded it up with 45 railroad ties and it barely protested. Although I have had one breakdown due to a relay failure, it's nothing compared to the many years of abuse and neglect it has endured. I have a strong attachment to this truck and I plan to keep it for as long as I live.
