Common Scion Tc 2005 problems
The 2005 Scion tC is known for some common problems, including engine failure and sunroof wind deflector breakage. The engine failure was a concern for many buyers, but the number of complaints suggests it's not a widespread issue.
The 2006 Scion tC, on the other hand, received many complaints and recalls. According to CarComplaints, the 2006 tC has collected 225 complaints and five recalls over the years.
The 2007 Scion tC has the most number of complaints reported by owners, making it the least reliable tC year. According to CarComplaints, the 2007 tC is the worst model year of this vehicle, with 194 complaints and two recalls. The most significant problems reported include excessive oil consumption, power window failure, and rough shifting. If you're looking for the most reliable Scion tC year, the 2007 version is far from it.
What is the most common problem with Scion tC?
The oil levels would sometimes be so low that the engine's oil warning light would turn on in the vehicle's gauge cluster. The issue is known to be caused by worn piston rings or engine sludge caused by infrequent oil changes. This is the most common issue with the Scion tC, with 54 reports in RepairPal.
Is the 2005 Scion tC a good car?
This car is a great commuter with economical MPG and reliability for the low cost value. Obviously well maintained as it has smooth acceleration with everthing solid and tight under the hood.
How long will a 2005 Scion tC last?
Since they're made by Toyota, they're just as reliable. You can easily surpass 200k miles and the car will still run like new (I know from my 07 TC, which has about 210k atm).
Is Scion as reliable as Toyota?
While the Scion brand may no longer be in production, it was a subsidiary of Toyota, a brand known for producing durable and reliable vehicles. This reliability has transferred well to the Scion xB, which boasts a generally solid track record of performance and minimal major issues.

- Summary: I PURCHASED A RED 2005 SCION TC FOR MY DAUGHTER IN FEBRUARY, 2019 FROM TOYOTA AUTO NATION IN DAVIE, FL. THEY HAD IT PRICED IN GOOD CONDITION, SO I EXPECTED TO GET SOME USE OUT OF IT. I PAID ALMOST $6,000. MONTH LATER IT OVERHEATED ON THE HIGHWAY (595) AND MY DAUGHTER HAD TO PULL OVER LATE AT NIGHT ON THE HIGHWAY AND I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO MY HOME. VERY SCARY AND UNSAFE SITUATION FOR A TEEN. HAD IT TOWED BACK TO THEIR SERVICE STATION AND IT TURNED OUT TO BE A PROBLEM, THAT COST ME $600. I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THIS COMPANY WOULD NOT HAVE SEEN ANY DAMAGE UNDER THE HOOD. SHAME ON THEM FOR SELLING ME A CAR THAT BROKE DOWN IN ONE MONTH. I HAVE CALLED THEM AND THEY WILL NOT HELP WITH THE PAYMENT. IT IS 'AS IS' I CALLED AND TEXT THE SALES GIRL AND NEVER RECEIVED A CALL BACK OR RESPONSE. FINALLY PUT A BAD REVIEW ON THEIR WEBSITE AND RECEIVED AN E-MAIL TO CONTACT MANAGER TO HELP WITH THE SITUATION, ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT WAS AN AUTOMATED EMAIL AND AGAIN TOLD 'TOO BAD'. IT IS NOW JULY AND YET AGAIN IT BROKE DOWN ON MY DAUGHTER AS SHE WAS AT THE GAS STATION. IT WOULD NOT START UP AFTER SHE TURNED IT OFF. TRIED TO JUMP IT AND NOTHING. ONCE AGAIN HEADED TO GO TO THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE STATION. AT FIRST WAS TOLD IT WAS ONLY THE BATTERY, SO I SAY GO AHEAD, I WILL PAY THE $140 AND REPLACE IT AND WE WILL GO FROM THERE. ONLY TO GET ANOTHER CALLBACK FROM THE MANAGER STATING THAT THERE IS MORE WRONG WITH THE CAR, THAT AFTER THE $89 FIVE POINT CHECK ON THE VEHICLE AND REPLACING THE BATTERY THAT IT STILL DID NOT START. THEY WOULD HAVE TO KEEP IT OVER THE WEEKEND. IT IS COSTING ME AN ARM AND A LEG AND I NEED HELP WITH THIS. I FEEL LIKE THEY LIED ABOUT THIS VEHICLE AND ALLOWED A CAR THAT IS NOT SAFE TO BE BOUGHT AT THEIR BUSINESS. I AM CONCERNED FOR MY CHILD'S SAFETY AND ONLY WANT WHAT IS FAIR.

- Summary: WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE 8/5/17, AT APPROX. 70-75 MPH, THE REAR MOON ROOF EXPLODED IN MY DAUGHTERS CAR! THERE WAS A LOUD EXPLOSION LIKE THE CAR HAD BEEN SHOT AT. SHE WAS ABLE TO KEEP CONTROL OF THE CAR AND THEN AFTER LOOKING AROUND AT ALL THE SIDE WINDOWS, THE PASSENGER NOTICED THAT THE MOON ROOF HAD EXPLODED. AFTER PULLING OVER THEY REMOVED AS MUCH LOOSE GLASS AS POSSIBLE SO IT WOULD NOT TO BLOW OFF AND CAUSE DAMAGE TO OTHERS OR AN ACCIDENT. THE GLASS WAS BLOWN OUTWARD AND LOOKED LIKE A VOLCANO THAT HAD ERUPTED. SHE DID NOT TAKE ANY PICTURES AT THE TIME DUE TO SHOCK AND DISBELIEF. PARENTS TOOK PHOTOS ONCE CAR WAS BACK IN ST. LOUIS IN THEIR GARAGE. SHE HAD TO DRIVE FROM INDIANAPOLIS TO ST. LOUIS WITH THE CAR DROPPING PIECES OF GLASS ONTO AND INTO THE CAR . ALSO FEARFUL THE OTHER ROOF MIGHT EXPLODE. AFTER SPEAKING WITH TOYOTA THEY SAID IT HAPPENS SOMETIMES. HEAT, PRESSURE BUILD UP, OR ROCKS CAN CAUSE IT. HEAT COULD NOT HAVE BEEN A FACTOR AS THE TEMPS THAT DAY WERE APPROX. 68 TO LOW 70'S. THE LINER COVERING THE MOON ROOF WAS OPEN. THIS SITUATION COULD HAVE BEEN SO MUCH WORSE. AN EXPLOSION LIKE THAT AT 70+ MPH COULD HAVE CAUSED A WRECK NOT TO MENTION INJURIES.

LOUIS WITH THE FEAR OF THE SUNROOF DOING THE SAME. THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT OR WORSE. THANK GOD NOBODY WAS INJURED OTHER THAN SOME CUTS FROM PULLING OUT LARGE CHUNKS OF GLASS THAT SHE WAS AFRAID WOULD BLOW OFF AND HIT OTHER CARS. WHEN I ASKED TOYOTA ABOUT IT THEY JUST SAID " IT'S BEEN KNOWN TO HAPPEN". I SHOWED THEM THE PHOTOS AND THEY SAID THAT PRESSURE CAN BUILD UP TO CAUSE THIS TO HAPPEN OR SOMETIMES HEAT. THE TEMP WAS ONLY AROUND 68- LOW 70'S. IF THEY KNOW THIS CAN HAPPEN THEN MAYBE THESE SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED.

THIS CONDITION CAN OCCUR IF THE DOOR FOR THAT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE IS CLOSED WITH A HIGH RATE OF FORCE WHILE THE VEHICLE'S IGNITION IS IN THE "ON" POSITION OR WITHIN 90 SECONDS OF TURNING THE IGNITION KEY FROM THE "ON" POSITION TO THE "OFF" POSITION.
- Consequence: IF THE SIDE IMPACT SEAT-BOLSTER AND CURTAIN SIDE AIRBAGS INADVERTENTLY DEPLOY, THEY COULD CAUSE PERSONAL INJURY IF AN OCCUPANT IS SEATED ON THE SAME SIDE OF THE VEHICLE AS THE DOOR THAT IS CLOSED WITH A HIGH RATE OF FORCE. UNTIL THE REPAIR HAS BEEN PERFORMED, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT A MINIMAL FORCE/SPEED BE USED TO CLOSE THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER DOORS OR CLOSING THE DOORS AFTER 90 SECONDS HAVE ELAPSED FROM TURNING THE IGNITION KEY FROM THE "ON" TO THE "OFF" POSITION.

IN THIS CONDITION, THE EXPANSION FORCE OF THE GAS MAY BE INSUFFICIENT TO PROPERLY INFLATE THE AIR BAG WHEN THE SRS SYSTEM IS ACTIVATED DURING A CRASH.
- Consequence: THIS MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE OCCUPANT IN THE INVOLVED SEATING POSITION IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SPECIFIC SRS AIR BAG. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 6, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-888-270-9371, SCION AT 1-866-548-1851, OR LEXUS AT 1-800-255-3987.

Positive Scion Tc 2005 car reviews

I bought the car as a workhorse for my outside sales job and have driven it for 160,000 miles without any major issues. Although it trembles slightly with the a/c on when stopped and the brakes squeak in reverse in the morning, and the CD changer occasionally gets jammed, these are my only complaints. The power and handling are great, especially with my TRD struts. Overall, this car has been a joy to own and drive, and the cost of ownership is incredibly low (excluding tires). What a fantastic car!
-
I purchased this car back in November 2004 and I have never had any mechanical issues with it. Although, like other tC's I have seen, the rear hatch lever broke off. I took it to Scion to see if it was covered under warranty, but unfortunately, it wasn't. I was always hoping I'd get a letter in the mail saying it was a defect. Since buying this car, I have had a daughter and it can be a bit of a pain getting her car seat in and out, but that's the case with most 2 door cars. She also struggled to see out of the windows, which she didn't like. However, last week my husband accidentally rolled it down a hill. Thankfully, he sustained no injuries and the car survived with only a couple of broken windows and dents. The car has easily made it to 98,000 miles with no trips to the mechanic, just basic oil changes and whatnot. Overall, it has been a great buy!
-
Usually, when you anticipate something this good, the hype can sometimes overtake what it really turns out to be. NOT FOR THIS CAR! I've been drooling over this car since December of 2003 and I have to say, it was worth the wait. There aren't enough words to describe the thrill of driving one of these bad boys. The options are endless when it comes to tuning, but the basic model itself is loaded!
-
I really enjoy driving this car! It has been a reliable companion for almost two years since I bought it new. I was an early adopter of the tC and it has been a great choice. While it may not have as much power as some other sports coupes, it is still a nice car. I have considered supercharging it, but unfortunately, it is not within my budget. The gas mileage is not the best, as I typically get around 18.5 - 19.5 mpg in the city and about 21 mpg on the highway, which is lower than the advertised 22 mpg. The car can be a bit slippery in the rain, but I believe that is more due to the tires than anything else. However, it does have excellent cornering ability. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase, although I do wish I had opted for a manual transmission!
-
I owned a 4-door Altima before this car. There is no comparison. First of all, the car looks amazing, both inside and out. Secondly, the engine is not only adequate, but also well-laid-out and easy to work on. The handling is responsive and very playful. By the way, baby blue is definitely the best color for it :)

When I first saw and heard about the coupe tC, I was really excited and thought it was the perfect car for me. I ended up buying one, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. While the pick up, design, interior, and safety features were all great, the car just wasn't enjoyable to drive. The biggest issue I had was with the visibility. The enormous dash and fast-dipping hood made it really difficult to see, especially when turning around. The heater also blocked the rear window, making it as bad as an old Cadillac Eldorado. Although the space around me was roomy, I still felt like I might hit my head, and I'm only 5'10. If they can work out these major problems, this car has the potential to be the best!

I have owned this car for over 3 years, but unfortunately, I have grown to dislike it. It is quite small and cheaply made, and as they say, you get what you pay for when it comes to Scion. The car tends to make noise, and hitting a bump can cause it to rattle for a while. It also tends to creek and rattle over every bump, and the front bumper scrapes on everything. Additionally, the sunroof whistles, the rear hatch does not stay up, and the A/C condensation leaked into the radio, causing me to lose my radio and speakers. The car's MPG could be better, and the tires (regardless of brand) tend to slide and slip in rain and snow, requiring frequent replacement. The brakes also do not last as long as those of other cars. Overall, I find this car to be poorly built, which is very disappointing coming from Toyota.
Logan Muller 2024-07-07
Hi there! I bought this car when it first came out towards the end of 04 and I'm happy to report that I haven't had any engine problems so far. However, I have noticed that the brakes squeak a lot when I'm reversing and the liftback rattles from time to time. Additionally, the radio cover squeaks constantly. I took it back to the dealer and while they tried to fix it, unfortunately the problems are still there. Do you have any suggestions on what I could do next?

Great car overall! It's reliable, cost-effective, and has minimal maintenance costs.

Hey there! I love the look of my car, but I've had a few issues with it. Recently, the rear hatch handle broke off after regular use (not excessive force) and I've had to get it epoxied back on twice. It's only held in place by plastic screws and it's the only way to lift open the heavy hatch. Also, the tires are quite expensive (low profile racing-type tires).
