The Jaguar XJ is a series of mid-size/full-size luxury cars produced by British automobile manufacturer Jaguar Cars (becoming Jaguar Land Rover in 2013) from 1968 to 2019. It was produced across five basic platform generations (debuting in 1968, 1986, 1994, 2003, and 2009) with various updated derivatives of each. From 1970, it was Jaguar's flagship four-door model. The original model was the last Jaguar saloon to have been designed under the leadership of Sir William Lyons, the company's founder, and the model has been featured in countless media and high-profile appearances.

Series 1, 2, and 3 (1968–1992)

Overview

The first generation Jaguar XJ was produced for a total period of 24 years, with two major facelifts – in 1973 and in 1979, with a raised front bumper and less tall grilles.

For four years, the 1968 introduced XJ was always a four-door, straight-six saloon on a 2.76 m (108.75 in) wheelbase. In 1972, a more spacious, 4-inch (10 cm) longer wheelbase (LWB) option, and a 5.3 litre V12 engine were added. On the XJ series II (from 1973), the standard wheelbase (SWB) saloons were cancelled in 1974 – but a SWB two-door (series II only) coupé was sold from 1975–1978.

The 1979 series III saloons received a redesigned greenhouse (upper body) and bumpers. The 6-cylinder series III models were replaced by the second generation Jaguar XJ in 1987, but the V12 models not until 1992.

Common 1993 Jaguar Xj6 problems

Common Problems with the Jaguar XJ6 1993:

  • Suspension Issues: Some owners have reported a "hopping" motion when driving the car from about 5mph to 25mph, which could be related to suspension or steering issues.
  • Electrical Problems: Electrical issues are a common complaint among Jaguar XJ6 1993 owners, with some reporting intermittent starting problems, dashboard codes, and displays, and difficulty diagnosing electrical faults.
  • Overheating Problems: The 1993 and 1994 XJ6 models are known to have overheating problems, which can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty thermostat or radiator fan.
  • Timing Chain Tensioner Failure: The tensioners for the cam-to-cam timing chains on the Jaguar XJ6 1993 are prone to failure, which can cause the chain to derail and the valves to bend. It's recommended to inspect the tensioners regularly and replace them if necessary.
  • Water Pump Failure: The water pumps in Jaguar v8 engines have plastic impellers, which can come apart and cause the engine to overheat. This can be a tricky problem to diagnose and requires replacing the water pump and flushing the block to remove any debris.
  • Convertible Top Issues: The convertible tops on XK8 models can become sluggish and sometimes jam partway up, which is caused by the hydraulic fluid used to move the top. The fluid can become thick and need to be replaced.
  • Rust Issues: The Jaguar XJ6 1993 is known to have rust issues, particularly around the lower rockers under the front doors and the wheel arches. It's recommended to inspect the car regularly for signs of rust and address any issues promptly to prevent further damage.
  • Door Handle Failure: Some owners have reported issues with the handles on the rear passenger doors, which may need new clip springs to function properly.
  • Fuel Pump Failure: The fuel pump is known to fail at around 127,000 miles, which can cause starting problems and require replacement.

In summary, the Jaguar XJ6 1993 is known to have a variety of common problems, including braking issues, electrical faults, overheating problems, timing chain tensioner failure, water pump failure, convertible top issues, rust issues, door handle failure, and fuel pump failure. It's recommended to address these issues promptly to prevent further damage and ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

What problems did the Jaguar XJ have?

Water pumps on 5.0 V8 and 3.0 Supercharged XJ models are prone to failure, sometimes they can fail in less than 20,000 miles. This is because coolant gets inside the bearing housing corroding the water pump bearing.

What engine is in Jaguar XJ6?

The XJ6, using the 2.8-litre (2,792 cc (170.4 cu in)) and 4.2-litre (4,235 cc (258.4 cu in)) straight-six cylinder versions of Jaguar's renowned XK engine, replaced most of Jaguar's saloons – which, in the 1960s, had expanded to four separate ranges.

How fast is a Jaguar XJ6?

140 mph

When the 5.3-liter V-12 arrived in 1972, it provided 253 hp for 140 mph and 0–60 in 7.4 seconds, making the XJ the fastest four-seat sedan in the world. In 1973, Jaguar updated the XJ6 as the Series 2, with a slimmer grille and revised dash.

How long is a 1982 Jaguar XJ6?

The width is 1770 mm across all variants. The length is 4959 mm across all variants.
