1996 Ford Bronco problems
The Ford Bronco is a model line of SUVs manufactured and marketed by Ford. The first SUV model developed by the company, five generations of the Bronco were sold from the 1966 to 1996 model years. A sixth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2021 model year. The nameplate has been used on other Ford SUVs, namely the 1984–1990 Bronco II compact SUV and the 2021 Bronco Sport compact crossover.
Originally developed as a compact off-road vehicle using its own chassis, the Bronco initially competed against the Jeep CJ-5 and International Harvester Scout. For 1978, Ford enlarged the Bronco, making it a short-wheelbase version of the F-Series pickup truck; the full-size Bronco competed against the Chevrolet K5 Blazer and Dodge Ramcharger.
Following a decline in demand for large two-door SUVs, Ford discontinued the Bronco after the 1996 model year, replacing it with the four-door Ford Expedition; followed by the larger Ford Excursion. After a 25-year hiatus, the sixth-generation Bronco is now offered as a mid-size two-door SUV for the first time. It is also offered as a full-size four-door SUV with a 16 in (41 cm) longer wheelbase. It competes directly with the Jeep Wrangler as both a two-door and a four-door (hardtop) convertible.
From 1965 to 1996, the Ford Bronco was manufactured by Ford at its Michigan Truck Plant in Wayne, Michigan, where it also manufactures the sixth-generation version.

Common 1996 Ford Bronco problems
The 1996 Ford Bronco is a popular full-sized SUV known for its versatility, power, and ruggedness. However, like any other vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported over the years. Here are some of the most commonly reported issues with the 1996 Ford Bronco, along with their causes and possible solutions:
- Brake System Troubles: Many drivers of the 1992 Ford Bronco have reported problems with their brake system, including front brakes that stick, bind, or grab from time to time, and issues with brake caliper pins. These problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including dirty or worn brake pads, damaged brake rotors, or faulty caliper pins. To fix these issues, it's recommended to clean or replace the brake caliper pins, as well as inspect and replace any damaged or worn brake components.
- Transmission Problems: According to some owners of the 1991 Ford Bronco, problems with the transmission are common for the model year. Many of them have complained about suddenly feeling rough shifts while driving their Bronco. When they took their SUV to the shop to get checked, they were told they had problems with their transmission. Most of the owners had to replace their transmission to resolve the problem. Transmission problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including low transmission fluid levels, worn or damaged transmission components, or faulty sensors. To fix these issues, it's recommended to inspect and replace any damaged or worn components, as well as check and refill the transmission fluid.
- Engine Issues: Engine issues are among the most widely reported 1990 Ford Bronco problems, and they can range from oil leaks to poor gas mileage, which are typically caused by a damaged oil pan gasket. On top of these issues, some drivers have also experienced problems with their vehicle’s oil pressure. Many owners of the Ford Bronco have also complained about intermittent oil pressure readings. When they put their SUV into gear, the oil pressure would suddenly drop and the check engine light would illuminate. In some cases, the vehicle may even stall. Some owners found a quick fix to resolve this issue, which involves putting the rig in neutral and revving the engine up. To fix these issues, it's recommended to inspect and replace any damaged or worn engine components, as well as check and refill the engine oil.
In conclusion, while the 1996 Ford Bronco is a great vehicle, it's important to be aware of the common problems that owners have reported. By staying on top of preventive maintenance and addressing any issues as soon as they arise, you can help ensure that your Bronco stays in great condition for years to come.

- VIN: 1FMEU15H6TL
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: TRANSMISSION JUMPS OUT OF OVERDRIVE, AFTERWARDS HARD SHIFTS IN ALL GEARS AFTER HIGH RPMS. THE FIX IS TO STOP, CUT THE ENGINE OFF AND THE TRANSMISSION RESETS FOR LACK ON A BETTER TERM. EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-02-15

- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: HEAD LIGHT DIMMER SWITCH/TURN SIGNAL SWITCH. AFTER HEAD LIGHTS HAVE BEEN RUNNING FOR A FEW MINUTES, THE HEAD LIGHTS WILL BEGIN TO FLASH ON/OFF IN EITHER HIGH BEAMS OR LOW BEAMS. I HAVE FOUND THE ISSUE TO BE IN THE HIGH BEAM SWITCH ITSELF. IF THIS HAD HAPPENED ON A BUSY STREET OR IN A LOCATION WHERE PEOPLE WERE CROSSING THE ROAD IT COULD HAVE BEEN VERY BAD. RESEARCH SHOWED THIS TO BE A VERY COMMON ISSUE AND SHOULD BE CHANGED. THERE IS EVEN A HARNESS FOR SALE THAT ROUTES POWER AROUND THIS SWITCH AND THROUGH A RELAY SETUP TO CORRECT THIS ISSUE. I'M SURE FORD SHOULD BE FIXING THIS ISSUE BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT, DUE TO INABILITY TO SEE... *TR

TIRES PROBLEM

- Components: TIRES
- Summary: I BOUGHT 4 TIRES FROM SULLIVAN TIRES IN SCARBOROUGH, MAINE ON ROUTE 1. I PAID FOR THE UPGRADED QUALITY TIRES BY THEIR RECOMMENDATION. THE TIRES WERE GUARANTEED FOR 25,000 MILES. AFTER 14,000 MILES, ONE OF THE FOUR TIRES BEGAN TO HAVE IRREGULAR WEAR UNTIL ONE SIDE OF THE TIRE WAS COMPLETELY BALD. THE OTHER 3 TIRES ARE STILL LIKE NEW. I BROUGHT MY VEHICLE IN TO THEM ASSUMING THAT THEY WOULD REPLACE THIS TIRE. THEY TOLD ME TO COME BACK NEXT WEEK, THEY WERE TOO BUSY. I EXPLAINED THE ENTIRE SITUATION TO THEM, BUT WHEN I RETURNED THE NEXT WEEK, THE SAME PERSON HAD FORGOTTEN ALL ABOUT MY ISSUE. I EXPLAINED IT AGAIN. I HAD TO LEAVE MY TRUCK FOR THEM TO LOOK AT THE TIRE. I HAD A FRIEND PICK ME UP. I LEFT MY PHONE NUMBER FOR THEM TO CONTACT ME AND AFTER 3 HOURS WHEN I DID NOT HEAR FROM THEM I CALLED. THEY DID NOT OR WOULD NOT REPLACE THIS TIRE. THEY ACCUSED ME OF MANY THINGS THAT WERE NOT TRUE, LIKE I HAD NEW TIE-ROD ENDS PUT ON, DID NOT BALANCE THEM, DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH AIR IN IT, ETC...I SPOKE FIRST TO THE ASSISTANT MANAGER, THEN TO THE MANAGER WITHOUT ANY RESOLUTION. THEY ASKED ME TO BRING IT BACK FOR ANOTHER DAY NEXT WEEK SO THEY COULD DO A ALIGNMENT CHECK. THEY WERE NOT GOING TO ALIGN IT, JUST CHECK IT. BUT BY THIS TIME, I DID NOT TRUST THEM AND DID NOT WANT TO WASTE ANOTHER DAY WITHOUT MY VEHICLE. THEY DID NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR TIRES OR THEIR WARRANTY ON THE TIRES. I AM DISGUSTED AND I FEEL THAT OTHER CONSUMERS SHOULD BE WARNED BEFORE CONSIDERING SULLIVAN TIRES. I PLAN ON TAKING THEM TO COURT. *NM

The Ford Bronco is widely regarded as one of the most versatile and capable vehicles ever built. Despite being designed for off-road adventures, it still managed to provide the comfort and luxury of a sedan. While some SUVs of its time may have had better handling on the highway, none could match the Bronco's off-road capabilities while still maintaining excellent on-road performance. In my personal experience owning 17 Broncos from 1988 to 1996, the worst issue I ever encountered was a faulty o2 sensor. Even today, my 1988 Bronco with 275,000 miles on it is still running strong. I had four 1996 Broncos, all of which were sold with over 150,000 miles on them.
-
The Full size Bronco is one tough vehicle. Although it may not have the best mileage (13-15mpg) and has a prehistoric design (unchanged since the 70s), it is highly utilitarian, safe and reliable. It may not be the best choice for long range commuting, but it is an excellent utility vehicle.
-
This is our 3rd Bronco. We love having a big SUV with a short wheelbase. It's spacious yet easy to park.
-
Wow, this vehicle is truly impressive! The 351 V8 engine is a powerhouse and it's amazing that it comes straight from the factory. Plus, it's so comfortable to ride in. What a great combination!
-
I've owned two Broncos, an '82 and a '96, and they're my favorite kind of SUV. I love them and couldn't imagine being without one.

This is a great vehicle that you can depend on to take you almost anywhere. It's tough and rugged, just like a mule, and as long as you keep up with maintenance, it will keep going. The only issue is with the electric rear window.

I'm glad to hear that you had a great experience with your car! It sounds like you bought it for all the right reasons and it served you well on your trip to Alaska. While the gas mileage may not be the best, it's great to hear that you prioritized safety and functionality. It's unfortunate that you've had some issues with the interior quality, but it's good to know that regular maintenance has kept the engine running smoothly. I hope you continue to enjoy your car for many more adventures to come!
