1996 Ford F-350 problems

The Ford Super Duty (also known as the Ford F-Series Super Duty) is a series of heavy-duty pickup trucks produced by the Ford Motor Company since the 1999 model year. Slotted above the consumer-oriented Ford F-150, the Super Duty trucks are an expansion of the Ford F-Series range, from F-250 to the F-600. The F-250 through F-450 are offered as pickup trucks, while the F-350 through F-600 are offered as chassis cabs.

Rather than adapting the lighter-duty F-150 truck for heavier use, Super Duty trucks have been designed as a dedicated variant of the Ford F-Series. The heavier-duty chassis components allow for heavier payloads and towing capabilities. With a GVWR over 8,500 lb (3,900 kg), Super Duty pickups are Class 2 and 3 trucks, while chassis-cab trucks are offered in Classes 3, 4, 5, and 6. The model line also offers Ford Power Stroke V8 diesel engines as an option.

Ford also offers a medium-duty version of the F-Series (F-650 and F-750), which is sometimes branded as the Super Duty, but is another chassis variant. The Super Duty pickup truck also served as the basis for the Ford Excursion full-sized SUV.

The Super Duty trucks and chassis-cabs are assembled at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky, and at Ohio Assembly in Avon Lake, Ohio. Prior to 2016, medium-duty trucks were assembled in Mexico under the Blue Diamond Truck joint venture with Navistar International.

  • Windows: Windows can have issues in the Ford F-350 1996, including problems with the power window motors or regulators, which can cause the windows to move slowly or not at all.

  • Transmission: Transmission problems can occur in the Ford F-350 1996, including slipping transmission, fluid leaks, hard shifting, and overheating. These problems can be caused by low transmission fluid, worn clutch bands, faulty solenoids, or extreme driving conditions.
  • Lug Nuts: Some Ford F-350 1996 owners have reported issues with swollen and stuck lug nuts, which can make it difficult to remove the wheels for maintenance or replacement.

Regular maintenance, including fluid level inspections and replacements, can help prevent many of these problems before they occur. Consulting the vehicle's manual for recommended maintenance schedules and procedures is essential. Replacing old or contaminated transmission fluid, solenoids, and seals and gaskets can also help maintain the best possible transmission performance and prevent premature wear and tear.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-09-21
  • VIN: 1FTJW35F0TE
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: THE EXISTING RECALL 07V-553 (CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR ON FORD 1997-2003 F-SUPER DUTY, E-SERIES, AND EXCURSION VEHICLES WITH 7.3L DIESEL ENGINES) SEEMS TO BE INCORRECTLY NARROW IN SCOPE. I HAVE A 1996 F-350 WITH THE SAME 7.3L DIESEL ENGINE NOTED IN THE RECALL, AND HAD THE EXACT FAILURE DESCRIBED IN THIS RECALL. I HAD IT REPAIRED AT A FORD DEALERSHIP ON SEPT 21, 2007, AND CAN PROVIDE COMPLETE DOCUMENTED INFORMATION FROM THAT REPAIR. WHY DID FORD NOT INCLUDE F-SERIES TRUCKS THAT USE THE 7.3L ENGINE (SUCH AS THE F-350) IN THIS RECALL? WHY IS IT LIMITED TO 1997 AND NEWER? THERE ARE OTHER VEHICLES OUT THERE ON THE ROAD (SUCH AS MINE) THAT HAVE A SIMILAR POTENTIAL TO FAIL. THIS IS A DIFFICULT PROBLEM TO DIAGNOSE; THE DEALER COULD NOT DETERMINE THE PROBLEM THE FIRST TIME I BROUGHT IT IN (JANUARY 2007). MY PROBLEM WENT ON FOR MORE THAN A YEAR (WITH MOMENTARY POWER LOSSES AND ENGINE STALLS SHORTLY AFTER STARTUP) BEFORE IT PROGRESSED TO SERIOUS DRIVABLE ISSUES THAT WERE FREQUENT ENOUGH THEY COULD BE DIAGNOSED BY THE FORD DEALER. CAMSHAFT SENSOR FAILURE CAUSES THE ENGINE COMPUTER TO MAKE THE ENGINE STALL. UNFORTUNATELY, AT THAT STAGE THE DRIVABLE ISSUES ALSO BECOME DANGEROUS. I AM SEEKING AN EXPANSION OF THIS RECALL TO COVER ALL VEHICLES AFFECTED BY THE CAM SENSOR FAILURES, AND REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE REPAIR EXPENSES I PAID THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED BY THIS RECALL. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • VIN: 1FTJW35F5TE
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I HAVE A '96 FORD F350 WITH A 7.3L POWERSTROKE. MY TRUCK HAS BEEN STALLING INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. AND ON OCCASION, HAD CUT OUT COMPLETELY AND NOT COME RIGHT BACK WHICH LEAVES ME WITH NO POWER BRAKES, OR STEERING TO STOP THE VEHICLE, OR GET IT OFF THE ROAD. I STOPPED AT BANKSTON FORD IN FRISCO, TX TODAY TO ASK IF MY TRUCK WAS ON THE RECALL LIST, AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS NOT. THEY WOULD NOT FIX THE KNOWN PROBLEM, UNLESS I WAS WILLING TO PAY $380 FOR THE PART, AND ANOTHER 4HOURS OF LABOR. AS I UNDERSTAND IT, AND EVEN VERIFIED BY THEIR PARTS DEPARTMENT, THIS PART IS A $194 PART, OR A $36 PART. I WAS TOLD MY TRUCK IS THAT $194 SPECIAL ORDER PART. THERE WOULD BE NO REFUNDS IF I ORDERED IT WITH THEM. ALSO, WITH TALKING TO A FRIEND OF MINE THAT IS A MECHANIC AT FORD, THIS IS LESS THAN A 30 MINUTE JOB. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY MY TRUCK IS NOT ON THE RECALL LIST, WHEN THIS IS A KNOWN FORD PROBLEM. *TR

Negative 1996 Ford F-350 car reviews

  1. Leo Dickinson 2024-11-23

It's great to have a truck, but unfortunately, I didn't have the opportunity to have it checked out before purchasing it. It seems like it was put together in a hurry and may have been salvaged before being sold by the dealership. I'm sure it would have been a good truck if it wasn't abused. It's important to be cautious when doing business with others!

  2. Fred Hoeger 2024-10-15

This older F350 diesel is actually pretty good! It works really well for towing our smaller 5th wheel, providing both power and economy. While the interior may not be as refined as the newer trucks, it still works perfectly for us.

  3. Watson Dicki 2024-07-01

Hello! I noticed that your truck has a 7.3L Navistar Diesel Non-Turbo engine. While it's a great crew cab, I wanted to let you know that this engine has had some issues in the past. Unfortunately, there is a known problem with pinholes developing in the cylinder walls, which can cause engine coolant to enter the cylinder and result in a major repair expense. Additionally, this engine may not be the best choice for hauling heavy loads. I hope this information is helpful!

Positive 1996 Ford F-350 car reviews

  1. Floy Pacocha 2024-07-27

I have no complaints about my truck. It has been a reliable workhorse, with 318k miles on the clock before I had to swap out the motor. Even when it lost three cylinders, it kept going. I have pushed this truck to its limits, and it has never let me down. I will never sell it, even though parts are becoming harder to find. While I suspect the steering column will be the next big job, I know that nobody builds trucks like this anymore. Not even Ford.

  2. Abraham O'Kon 2024-07-08

This truck has been everything I was looking for when I bought it. We pull our 5th wheel camper or our tractor loader, both putting us in the 19,000 lb area. Our 94 turbo diesel does the job and then some. I plan on keeping it until it's ten and then I'll look at what is on the market then.

  3. Evert Schinner 2024-06-18

I must say, this is the best truck I have ever owned. I was involved in a head-on collision with a full-size Chevy van at 70mph, but the truck held up incredibly well. Despite the impact, the engine was not even touched, and I walked away completely unhurt. I am definitely planning on purchasing another F350 Dually Diesel in the future. The fuel economy was also impressive, as I was getting between 19-23 miles per gallon on the highway when empty, and 12-15 miles per gallon with a loaded 4 car trailer. As I have told others, this is the only truck worth buying. Best regards, Mark.

  4. Jevon Ernser 2024-05-08

I have owned multiple Ford trucks and have consistently experienced chronic transmission issues. As evidence, I recently had to replace the transmission in my current truck, a 1995 Ford F350 4x4 dually diesel.

  5. Loy Lesch 2024-05-01

You'll find the car to be both reliable and stylish, especially with the customize package. It boasts lots of power and acceleration, and the redesigned engine burns very clean.
