1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass supreme problems

oldsmobile logo

The Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme is a mid-size car produced by Oldsmobile between 1966 and 1997. It was positioned as a premium offering at the top of the Cutlass range. It began as a trim package, developed its own roofline, and rose during the mid-1970s to become not only the most popular Oldsmobile but the highest selling model in its class.

It was produced as a rear-wheel drive two-door hardtop, sedan, and station wagon into the 1980s, and a convertible through 1972. In 1988 Oldsmobile sought to capitalize on the brand equity of the Cutlass Supreme marque by replacing it with a downsized front-wheel drive model based on the GM10 platform W-platform.

When production ended there was no direct replacement for the Cutlass Supreme, although the Intrigue introduced for 1998 was designed in size and price to replace all the Cutlass models.

1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass supreme recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass supreme.

2003-12-11
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: STEERING:RACK AND PINION
  • Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES HAVE LOWER PINION BEARINGS IN THE POWER RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY IN WHICH THE RETAINER TABS WERE NOT CRIMPED PROPERLY. THESE RETAINERS COULD FAIL AND PERMIT THE BALL BEARINGS TO ESCAPE.
  • Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS, THE PINION SHAFT CAN BE FORCED UPWARD DURING LEFT TURNS AND BACK DOWN AS THE STEERING WHEEL IS MOVED BACK AND TO THE RIGHT. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL NEED TO EXERT MORE EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, SIMILAR TO A VEHICLE WITHOUT POWER ASSISTED STEERING. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES EVEN FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL REQUIRE MUCH HIGHER EFFORT TO TURN LEFT AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TURN THE WHEEL AS MUCH AS INTENDED. WITH THE MAXIMUM PINION SHAFT MOVEMENT, WHICH REQUIRES INTERNAL GEAR COMPONENT DAMAGE, THE DRIVER CAN ENCOUNTER HIGH RESISTANCE TO TURNING LEFT, FOLLOWED BY UNINTENDED POWER ASSIST TO THE RIGHT. IN ANY OF THESE CONDITIONS, A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW LOWER PINION BEARING UNLESS INSPECT OF THE EXISTING BEARING INDICATES THAT REPLACEMENT OF THE GEAR ASSEMBLY IS NECESSARY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 5, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080; CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438; OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537; OR PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668.
2000-07-03
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. CORROSION OF THE AIR BAG INFLATOR'S INTERNAL WIRING, WHICH CAN OCCUR OVER TIME, COULD CAUSE THE INADVERTENT DEPLOYMENT OF THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG. THIS DEPLOYMENT COULD OCCUR DURING VEHICLE START-UP, WHILE THE VEHICLE IS PARKED OR IDLING, OR WHILE IN OPERATION.
  • Consequence: IF THE CONSUMER IS TOO CLOSE TO AN INFLATING AIR BAG, SERIOUS INJURIES COULD OCCUR.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE INFLATORS ON THESE AIR BAGS.

Negative 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass supreme car reviews

  1. Eric Weimann 2024-11-06

Although I have had some issues with this car, I am confident in my ability to handle them. I have had to replace the transmission, fuel pump, water pump, and alternators, as well as the fuel injector system. While these repairs have been costly, I am confident that I have made the right decisions in keeping this car running. I am determined to continue driving it for as long as possible.

  2. Odell Rosenbaum 2024-06-20

...despite meticulous upkeep. The acceleration, braking, and turning were similar to a sinking garbage barge. It seems like the same barge must have been the source for parts, too - the build quality was the worst I've ever seen. The reliability and maintainability were a joke: after two alternators, a dozen brake rotors, an oil leak, a vacuum leak, a hundred other problems, and finally the fuel pump (on a four year old car!), the maintenance costs were killing me.

Positive 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass supreme car reviews

  1. Andres Heathcote 2025-01-08

I've been driving this car for almost 4 and a half years now. Although it has had a few issues, they were nothing major. Shortly after purchasing it at around 17,000 miles, the coolant sensor had to be replaced, and it looks like it needs to be replaced again. The ABS sensor was also replaced a couple of years ago. It backfired twice, according to the dealer. The first time it ran rough, and they replaced the plugs and wires and cleaned the fuel injectors. The second time was eight months later after brake work, and they attributed it to the bad gas that is common nowadays. After resetting the computer, it has been running fine for the last year. Overall, it's a very comfortable car to drive.

  2. Fletcher Terry 2025-01-01

Hi there! I've been driving my car for two months now and I absolutely love it! It's a great car to drive and has almost everything I need, although I do wish it had a sunroof.

  3. Sammie O'Keefe 2024-11-29

I really love this car! The 3.4 DOHC engine is definitely the way to go, although it can be a bit pricey to change the timing belt. I previously owned a '95 3.1 version and this one is MUCH quicker. I've had to do some repairs on it, such as the AC compressor and cruise control module, but nothing unexpected for the mileage. The 5 spoke Olds wheels really make it stand out from the standard Cutlass. If you're buying the 3.4 version, make sure to keep up with maintenance on the timing belt. The driver and passenger have plenty of leg and head room (even with the moonroof and at 6'1

  4. Rodrick Grady 2024-11-22

Hey there! It sounds like you've had some trouble with your car in the past, but I'm glad to hear that everything is working perfectly now. I can tell that you really love your car, especially the way it handles. Although, you mentioned that you think 2nd gear is set at too low of a ratio. That's interesting! I'm not too familiar with the technical details, but it's great that you've managed to get it up to around 200hp. I also agree that the 5 spoke wheels that came with it are really nice. Have you thought about upgrading to 17's or 18's in the near future? By the way, who needs a system when your car already sounds awesome without it? Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me!

  5. Marcus Bashirian 2024-09-25

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2-door cutlass supreme that I bought with 72k miles on it. At first, I was really impressed with how it pulled double duty as a sports car and a smooth riding family car. However, I've had some issues with the brake lock and shifting out of park. Unfortunately, GM had a bad year with gaskets and I ended up with a drained radiator fluid into the engine, which caused it to die at only 92k miles. I just wanted to let people know about this problem, but don't worry, I don't think most people will have to deal with an engine swap. Thanks for listening!
