Common 2002 Mini Cooper problems
The Mini Cooper 2002 is known to have several common problems that can affect its performance and reliability. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues:
- Transmission Failure: The Mini Cooper 2002's transmission is also known to have problems, particularly the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) in the R50 model. This issue can result in automatic transmission failure, which can be a significant inconvenience and safety hazard for drivers.
- Timing Chain Noise: Another common problem with the Mini Cooper 2002 is a noisy timing chain. This issue can be caused by low oil levels or other mechanical problems, and can result in a loud rattle when starting the car. If left unaddressed, it can lead to more serious engine problems.
- Water Pump Leaks: The Mini Cooper 2002's water pump is also known to have issues, with leaks occurring after around 50,000 miles. This can result in engine coolant leaks, which can cause the engine to overheat and potentially lead to more serious engine damage.
- Radiator Support: The radiator support in the Mini Cooper 2002 is made of plastic, which can be prone to damage and stress from the weight of the radiator, cooling fan, and condenser assembly. This can result in the need for replacement or repair of the radiator support.
- Power Steering Pump Failure: The Mini Cooper 2002's electric power steering pump has also been subject to recall due to premature failure, which can result in a loss of power steering and potential safety hazards for drivers.
- Engine Surge: The Mini Cooper 2002's engine is prone to surging and dying at idle, which can be caused by faulty spark plugs or coils. This issue can result in a fluctuating engine speed and potential engine damage if left unaddressed.
- Stiff Steering: The Mini Cooper 2002's steering can develop stiff spots, particularly when parking or maneuvering the car. This issue can be caused by worn universal joints in the steering column and can result in a less enjoyable driving experience.
- Clutch Position Sensor: The Mini Cooper 2002's clutch position sensor can go out of adjustment, which can prevent the car from starting. This issue can be frustrating for drivers and result in the need for repair or replacement of the sensor.
In general, the Mini Cooper 2002 is known to have several common problems that can affect its reliability and performance. While some of these issues can be minor and easily addressed, others can be more serious and result in costly repairs. It's important for drivers of the Mini Cooper 2002 to be aware of these common problems and to address them promptly to ensure the safety and longevity of their vehicle.
How long do 2002 Mini Coopers last?

What year is bad for Mini Cooper?
According to Consumer Reports surveys, Mini Cooper released from 2006–2012 is considered the worst years. Having said that, there have been problems in the earlier 2000's as well. - Summary: MY MINI COOPER NEEDS RECALL WORK DONE. I AM IN BILLINGS, MT AND 392 MILES FROM THE CLOSEST CERTIFIED PLACE TO GET IT REPAIRED. I CAN'T TRAVEL THAT FAR IN A 2002 VEHICLE WITH HIGH MILES DURING A PANDEMIC. I AM A SENIOR CITIZEN AND HAVE ISSUES THAT DO NOT ALLOW ME TO TRAVEL THAT FAR. I AM STUCK WITH A VEHICLE THAT MAY HAVE A POTENTIAL STEERING ISSUE WITH NO WAY TO RESOLVE IT. I NOW CAN'T SELL THIS VEHICLE EITHER BECAUSE IT WOULD BE MORALLY WRONG TO PASS THIS PROBLEM ON TO A NEW OWNER. I CAN'T AFFORD THIS KIND OF SAFETY AND FINANCIAL PROBLEM. I NEED HELP TO GET THIS WORK DONE AND MINI COOPER CALLED ME AFTER MY INQUIRY AND SAID I AM BASICALLY OUT OF LUCK. THEY HAVE NO RESOLUTION FOR ME OR ANY OTHER MINI COOPER OWNERS THAT LIVE IN RURAL STATES AND ARE NOT NEAR A CERTIFIED DEALERSHIP. I NEED THIS REPAIRED AND AM HOPING YOU CAN HELP ME AND ALL THE OTHER MINI COOPER OWNERS IN THIS DANGEROUS SITUATION. THE NUMBER THE MINI REPRESENTATIVE CALLED ME FROM WAS 800-831-1117.

THEN THE RADIATOR FAN WOULD NOT TURN OFF WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS OFF. TOOK THE CAR IN TO TWO DIFFERENT MECHANICS TO FIND THE PROBLEM. FOUND OUT IT WAS THE POWER STEERING PUMP WENT OUT CAUSING THE COOLANT RESERVOIR TO GO OUT. THIS COULD CAUSE EXTREME SAFETY HAZARDS WHEN DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AND THE STEERING FREEZES!! I CONTACTED BMW AFTER HEARING THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD WE MISSED THE RECALL TIME FRAME. I HAVE LOW MILES, 60,000. THE RECALL EXPIRED IN 2017. WELL, MY CARE WAS NOT HAVING THE ISSUES. I DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE SELLING THE CAR AND HANDING THE PROBLEM TO ANOTHER CONSUMER. THIS RECALL SHOULD BE EXTENDED AS IT COULD BE AN UNPLEASANT RESULT.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-08-01
- VIN: WMWRC33472T
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED USED IN 2011, SOON THERE AFTER THE AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON, IT WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP AND THE AIR BAG LIGHT WAS RESET, I WAS ADVISED BY THE SHOP OWNER THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM IN THE OLDER MINI. HE ALSO ADVISED THAT IT IS EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE, AS MINI USA BASICALLY THROWS ALL NEW PARTS AT IT AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE WITHOUT REALLY GETTING TO THE BOTTOM OF THE PROBLEM. THE AIR BAG LIGHT ILLUMINATED AGAIN IN JULY OF 2015, RIGHT AFTER I HAD RETURNED FROM VACATION, APPARENTLY THE PARKING VALET HAD SLID THE SEAT BACK AND MOST LIKELY STRETCHED THE AIR BAG SEAT HARNESS. THIS IS A PROVEN DEFECT WHICH MINI USA HAS FINALLY ADDRESSED WITH A RECALL OF 2005 TO 2008 MODELS ONLY. IT IS RELATED TO A FAULTY SEAT HARNESS THAT CANNOT DETECT WHETHER A PASSENGER IS IN THE RIGHT SEAT. IT IS ALSO BEEN SHOWN THAT IN MOST CASES THE AIRBAGS WILL NOT DEPLOY IN AN ACCIDENT.

MINI USA KEEP DODGING THE ISSUE FOR A FULL ON RECALL, INSTEAD EXTENDING THE WARRANTY, BUT MY VEHICLE MISSED THE WARRANTY BY 3 MONTHS SO THEY WILL NOT REPLACE WITHOUT A HEFTY AMOUNT OF MONEY INVOLVED.

2002 Mini Cooper recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2002 Mini Cooper.
- Manufacturer: BMW of North America, LLC
- Components: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
- Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2002-2005 MINI Cooper and Cooper S vehicles and 2005 Cooper and Cooper S Convertible vehicles. The affected vehicles may experience temporary or permanent loss of the electro-hydraulic steering assistance.
- Consequence: If the vehicle experiences a loss of power steering assist, extra steering effort will be required at lower speeds, potentially increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: MINI will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the electro-hydraulic power steering system, replacing the components and wiring, as necessary, free of charge. Interim notices were mailed to owners on December 10, 2015. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact MINI customer service at 1-866-825-1525.

THESE LAMPS DO NOT CONTAIN THE REQUIRED AMBER SIDE REFLECTORS.
- Consequence: DECREASED LIGHTING VISIBILITY MAY RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: DOPE, INC. WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND OFFER A FULL REFUND FOR THE NONCOMPLIANT COMBINATION LAMPS. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 28, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT DOPE, INC. AT 1-626-272-1798.

THE STANDARD REQUIRES THAT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TIRE SIZE AND MAXIMUM TIRE PRESSURE BE INDICATED ON THE VEHICLE'S TIRE INFORMATION LABEL. THIS RELATIONSHIP IS NOT PRESENT.
- Consequence: TOO LOW OR TOO HIGH TIRE PRESSURE CAN CAUSE PREMATURE WEAR AND/OR TIRE DAMAGE, AND COULD LEAD TO UNFAVORABLE DRIVING CONDITIONS.
- Remedy: OWNERS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH NEW TIRE INFORMATION PLACARDS AND INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS. AT THE CUSTOMER'S OPTION, A DEALER CAN PERFORM THE INSTALLATION FOR THEM. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 30, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT MINI AT 1-866-275-6464.
- Manufacturer: BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE
- Components: POWER TRAIN:MANUAL TRANSMISSION:FLOOR SHIFT ASSEMBLY
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS, THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT CABLE CONNECTS THE GEARSHIFT LEVER IN THE VEHICLE INTERIOR TO THE SHIFT LINKAGE ON THE TRANSMISSION. IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE SHIFT CABLE TO DETACH FROM THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT LINKAGE WHILE THE DRIVER IS ATTEMPTING TO CHANGE GEARS. IF THE CABLE DETACHES FROM THE SHIFT LINKAGE, GEAR CHANGES WILL NO LONGER BE POSSIBLE AND THE TRANSMISSION WILL REMAIN IN THE LAST GEAR SELECTED.
- Consequence: IF SHIFT CABLE DETACHMENT OCCURS AND THE TRANSMISSION REMAINS IN ANY FORWARD GEAR, THE VEHICLE CAN STILL BE DRIVEN IN THAT GEAR ONLY. HOWEVER, IF THE TRANSMISSION MOVES INTO NEUTRAL AND REMAINS THERE, THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE OR MAINTAIN SPEED WILL BE LOST, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE SHIFT CABLE AND, IF NECESSARY, INSTALL A RETAINING CLIP OVER THE END OF THE SHIFT CABLE TO PREVENT IT FROM DETACHING FROM THE TRANSMISSION. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN AUGUST 6, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT BMW AT 1-866-ASK-MINI (1-866-275-6464).

I've only had my car for three days, but it's already turning heads and making people smile. During our first family outing, we took the ferry across the James River and even got invited up to the bridge to chat with the captain. He was curious about the car and asked us what kind it was. He mentioned that he sees thousands of cars every day and hardly pays attention to them anymore, but this one caught his eye.
-
The car is really well built and solid. The handling is like a go-kart and just as capable as my classic Mini. The ride is excellent, even at speeds over 100mph. While the power could be improved with more low-end torque, if you wind it up, it's quick enough. You just get into 5th gear a little over 90mph. It seems that critics may not be familiar with classic Minis or small cars.
-
In just six weeks, I've already put 2,000 miles on my new MINI, including two trips to the Keys on Card Sound Rd. Despite the bumps along the way, I couldn't be happier with my choice. I'm so grateful that I went with the MINI instead of a truck (SUV). It's been an absolute blast to drive!
-
I can't believe how much fun this car is to drive! It handles great both on the highway and city driving. Even when you are driving at higher speeds, you don't feel like you are in a small car; it feels stable and secure. The interior is very roomy, and I love the set-up of the gauges. It may only be a 4 cylinder, but it's zippy and gets great gas mileage. I am extremely satisfied with my MINI.
-
I've got about 2,000 miles on mine now and I have nothing but praise. While this car may not be ideal for extended hi-way driving, it is fantastic for daily commutes! I actually sold my Mustang Cobra for this little guy and have no regrets. In fact, I'm now going back for an 'S' and my wife is equally excited. How great!

"Blah". That is my only opinion of this "car". You might as well buy a moped. At least you would then feel safe. I feel like I am driving a cheap Korean car in this MINI. Hey, at least I can sell it to some other unsusoecting college student. BMW should be ashamed of themselves.

At nearly 68,000 miles, my car's transmission and clutch failed, requiring a $4,000 replacement. Despite having learned how to drive a manual transmission, the issue was not due to my driving habits. It is clear that this car is not reliable and I cannot recommend it to anyone.

I've owned three Beemers in the last 10 years and thought the MINI would be a fun addition to my collection. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a disaster. The car looks silly just a few days after bringing it home. The only good thing I can say is that I should be able to sell it with minimal depreciation since it's so popular right now.

I should have just bought a BMW instead of compromising with a Mini. I think I was deceived into thinking the Mini was simply a small version of a BMW 3 series. However, it is not. Don't get fooled, as the novelty wears off quicker than any other car I have owned.

I recently purchased a MINI and was excited about it. However, I faced some issues as the exhaust fell off in the first week and the car drifts to the right constantly. The engine also makes a funny sound. Hoping to get these issues resolved soon!
