The Lincoln MKX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV marketed and sold by the Lincoln brand of Ford Motor Company. Introduced in late 2006, the MKX ("X" stands for "crossover") is the first crossover SUV offered by the Lincoln brand. Initially the smallest Lincoln SUV, it has been slotted between the Lincoln Corsair and the Lincoln Aviator. It is the Lincoln counterpart of the Ford Edge crossover across both generations.

The first-generation MKX was produced from 2007 to 2015, based upon the CD3 platform. The second generation is based on the CD4 platform. Both generations of the MKX were manufactured at Oakville Assembly in Oakville, Ontario, Canada alongside the Ford Edge, Ford Flex, and Lincoln MKT.

As Lincoln phased out its use of "MK" model names, the MKX adopted the Lincoln Nautilus nameplate as part of a mid-cycle update in 2018 for the 2019 model year.

In addition to engine problems, the 2016 Lincoln MKX has also been reported to have issues with the throttle body. SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-20
  • VIN: 2LMTJ6LPXGB
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I placed my foot on the Brake to release the Emergency brake. I heard a pop. The brake pedal immediately went to car floor. I didn’t know what it was initially but quickly realized something was wrong with my brakes when I was on the highway. When I tried to brake the pedal went to the floor and the car did not slow properly. I made it to the subdivision entrance when the low brake fluid indicator light came on. I made it home safely. When I stopped, smelled an odor (I was told it was likely brake fluid). I had it towed to the dealership. It was diagnosed the day after, informing me brake line had broke. I asked what was the cause and possibly wear and tear? He informed a weak spot in the line. I called Lincoln customer relations bc it’s a safety issue whether it is a new or old car under warranty to address my concerns. They explained I would have to pay since a warranty was not in place. As a customer, my car is under 100, 000 miles and I service it routinely. I am more concerned of this being an issue with safety than a warranty being in place. My son or myself could have been in a bad accident sustaining serious injuries with no brakes. The Lincoln rep implied my car was old, which is an insult. It’s only 7 years old. My 22 year old Toyota is still working and the brake line has never broke. I was informed by the service tech it is unusual to see this occur in the back brakes. The brake line/hose broke and the brake fluid leaked out. In my opinion, it’s a defect, durability, and a safety issue regardless of the age of my car. It is a much bigger problem that should be addressed. The customer service rep and her manager were eluding to their extended warranty program and they could not offer financial assistance. I have paid more for services when I feel it’s wear and tear. It is a safety issue with a possible defective part, which I should not be responsible to pay, regardless of a warranty being in place or not. Safety and durability are the bigger issue.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-15
  • VIN: 2LMTJ8LR9GB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS,ENGINE
  • Summary: The major problem occurred right after purchase as check engine light came on. The dealership was no help and refused to take vehicle back. The vehicle is nice looking but the mechanical is a lemon. I purchased this in 2020 and paid $24000. It’s a 2016 Lincoln mkx. I repaired problems and due to covid and my lifestyle I rarely traveled. I have more medical issues and require more frequent doctor visits. I never went back to Brennegen after not standing by this vehicle shortly after purchase. I just tried to focus on the positive and started doing business elsewhere. I maintained proper service. Brennegen did not disclose active recall before purchase. Since purchase I have repaired two problems brakes, and fire risk to engine. At this months regular oils change my current mechanic Dahl ford said the water pump was leaking. The estimated repair is $5000. I paid just to have it diagnosed yesterday as I have not $5000. I followed their advice and parked this. My vehicle is currently not drivable. I investigated and discovered Lincoln Ford has several class action lawsuits filed against them. Many consumers have the water pump problem and unfortunately Lincoln was well informed of this since 2007 and purposely have not fixed the issue. Yet currently many consumers like me are in danger of eminent engine failure and catastrophic failure of Lincoln vehicles. The cost is far more expensive for many and consumers should not be victims of lemons and fraud. Lincoln knew and currently knows of problem. They denied to buy back my vehicle or repair it. The case was just filed yesterday and Lincoln denied it in less than 12 hours. Without any Investigation Or explanation they just told the other department rep to call me back and deny my complaint. I am not the only o e and lawyers are now involved in class action . Please help me start o e I. My area or get Lincoln to stand behind their advertisement as this is a blatant lie. The water pump is too expensive to fix. Please help!

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-01
  • VIN: 2LMPJ6LRXGB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: In early September the vehicle was completely without electrical power. My husband was able to jump start the car. We bought a new battery from AutoZone and it was installed by their technician. September 22, 2022 the same issue occurred and the car had to be jump started. I took the vehicle to the dealership who was able to find no cause of the failure. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms (no difficulty starting etc.) Based on other accounts this appears to be associated with NHTSA Campaign # 19V809000 - Electrical System. The dealership did not charge me for anything related to this failure as they could not recreate it.

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-04
  • VIN: 2lmtj8lr7gb
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: Brought vehicle into the dealer for tire rotation service. They said they could not take my wheels off the car because the lug nuts have become swollen. This is a common condition where the chromed metal lug nut covers become separated from the lug nuts and expand such that the lug nut socket no longer fits. This means that I can't remove a wheel to fix a flat on the road which become a real hazard.

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-21
  • VIN: 2LMTJ8LR8GB
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: While driving, there is an electrical issue that is causing warning alarms to go off for hill-descend control, advance-trac traction control, etc. During this time, there is also a complete loss of power steering and making the vehicle almost impossible to turn. The first incident happened on November 26, 2021 around 7pm were I was able to stop prior to hitting a building. I shut the vehicle off and back on again and the power steering was now working. I was unable to get Lincoln to tow the vehicle because it was "too far" from the roadside tow drivers service area. On the same day, I drove it the rest of the way home but upon exciting the highway around 7:30pm, the power steering again went out and I was able to stop the vehicle prior to going into the ditch next to the road. I had it towed to a Lincoln dealer in Wixom, Michigan but over the weekend could not locate the vehicle and at that point I was talking to an Advisor with Lincoln. They told her it would be at least 5 weeks before they could even look at the vehicle so per her recommendation, it was towed to Lafontaine Lincoln in Flushing, Michigan. It was in the shop until Wednesday, December 15th. I was informed they changed out the steering rack and pinion but was given no paperwork because they told me it was all covered under warranty. On December 21, 2021 while driving on Linden Road in Fenton, Michigan, it did the same thing with my wife driving and resulted in a compete loss of power steering and she went into the oncoming lane around a bend before she was able to get the vehicle stopped. Luckily there was no oncoming traffic. I will be having it towed again to the dealership. Luckily for me, these incidents have only resulted in near-miss situations but this is a major issue and will result in serious accidents if it hasn't already.

Road salt or other contaminants may corrode the electric power steering gear motor attachment bolts.
  • Consequence: If the bolts corrode, the steering gear motor may detach from the gear housing resulting in a loss of power steering assist, requiring a greater steering effort, especially at lower speeds, and increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering gear motor bolts and apply a wax sealer. If any of the steering gear motor attachment bolts are broken or missing, a new steering gear will be installed in the vehicle. These repairs will be performed free of charge. • Components: CHILD SEAT:TETHER: CONNECTOR/CLIP
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2016 Lincoln MKX vehicles manufactured September 24, 2015. • Consequence: An improperly anchored child seat can increase the risk of injury in a crash.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the seat back trim cover and tether cover bezel on the second row, free of charge. The recall began on June 16, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16C09.

Negative 2016 Lincoln Mkx car reviews

Hello! I am currently leasing a 2016 MKX, which is quite a change from my last two MKZ's. Unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues with my MKX that have been quite frustrating. Despite having most of the available options, I have had quirky and annoying problems with the car. For example, while driving at night, the 'Service Headlamps Light' came on and then they quit working minutes later. I drove home with only the parking lamps on. The dealer reset the computer and they worked again, but since then that warning light has come on briefly and then gone back off. Additionally, the carpeting has pulled away from the sills on two of the four doors, and I had a very annoying rattle in the all glass moon roof. It took the dealer a week to pinpoint and repair. I have also experienced exhaust fumes in the cabin when I need to accelerate quickly, and the hood flexes while driving on the highway, which is quite concerning. The dealer has assured me that the hood will not come open, but I am not convinced. Despite these issues, I am hopeful that the 2018 MKX has addressed these concerns before production. Thank you for listening to my experience!

I recently sold my 2016 Lincoln MKX due to several issues. The driver's seat would move on its own, the car had poor pick-up, and the radio would turn on when changing gears. Additionally, the computer would freeze unexpectedly while driving, and the defrost system was ineffective, making it difficult to see through the windshield. The heating system was also unbalanced, causing discomfort in extreme temperatures. Despite multiple trips to the dealer, the issues persisted and I ultimately decided to part ways with the car.

Hi there! I recently purchased a 2016 Lincoln MKX with 19,000 miles on it. However, I noticed that it wasn't getting the gas mileage that was advertised on the sticker, which was 23 city and 28 highway. Instead, I'm getting anywhere from 14 mpg to 18 mpg. I called the service department at Lincoln to inquire about this and was informed that it was due to the summer gas mix. Although I don't fully understand the reasoning behind this, I was told that it's a common issue that other customers have experienced as well. Despite this setback, I'm still happy with my decision to switch back to Lincoln from Cadillac. Thank you for your time and assistance!

This vehicle may not be in the same league as a Mercedes, BMW, or Audi, but it still has its own unique features that make it stand out. While the interior may not be as luxurious as some of its competitors, Cadillac has done a great job with the ride quality. Although there is no rear USB, it does have an inverter. The back seat comfort could be improved, especially with the glass roof impeding headroom. The AWD model may not have the best mileage at 17, but the 2.7L engine has good pull. The infotainment system has been upgraded with Sync3, but there is still room for improvement. It's understandable to have concerns about Ford's driverless vehicle plans, but let's not forget that this vehicle still has a lot to offer. The interior materials could be better, and it would be nice to have a sliding rear seat, but overall, it's a decent vehicle. The front may feel cramped due to the large console, and the cargo area is affected by the sloping hatch and drooping roofline. The options can be expensive, but it's worth noting that the LED headlamps and stereo upgrade cost $4,400. While it may not be the best in class, it's still a good option to consider. Overall, this vehicle has its pros and cons, but it's definitely worth considering if you're in the market for a new car.

We're so glad to hear that you're enjoying your MKX! It sounds like it has everything you need - plenty of horsepower, great gas mileage, and a stylish, comfortable ride. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

  2. Cory Wiegand 2024-10-01

The MKX has been an exceptional performer in all driving conditions, from cold and snowy to hot and dry. While I tried a Navigator, which is also a great vehicle, it was a bit too large for my needs. I always use distilled water with about 20% coolant in my vehicles and tractor, and this has worked exceptionally well in the MKX.

Your MKX Reserve trim with air suspension is a joy to drive. The ride is comfortable and the handling is impressive. The interior quality is top-notch and the build quality is exceptional. The huge panorama glass roof opens up the cabin to the sky, making for a truly immersive driving experience. The push button shifter is easy to use and intuitive, leaving more room on the center console for additional storage or cupholders. The smooth shifting transmission and effortless acceleration with the four-cylinder turbo engine make for a seamless driving experience. The lane centering and adaptive cruise control with emergency braking work in perfect harmony. The MKX boasts an upscale cabin, abundant high-tech features, a comfortable ride, and top crash test scores. The fuel-efficient turbocharged four-cylinder engine and strong turbocharged V6 are both great options. While it may have less rear seat and cargo room than some rivals, it feels bigger than it is behind the wheel. Overall, it is a pleasure to drive and own.

Just picked it up today and I am absolutely blown away! It's really nice. Usually, in the first few hours, I can spot the flaws, but so far, I haven't seen any. Admittedly, we got all the bells and whistles, and there are more than we need or probably want. There will be a bit of a learning curve, for sure, on all the technology package. We think the new BMW will find it lonely in the garage while the MKX is on the road. It's very comfortable all around. I'm really happy with this great buy!

If you're looking for a smooth and comfortable ride, this is definitely the car for you.
