2004 Subaru Outback problems

subaru logo

The Subaru Outback is an automotive nameplate used by the Japanese automaker Subaru for two different SUV-themed vehicles: a Legacy-derived crossover station wagon, the Outback (1994–present, also sold as Legacy Outback (Japanese: スバル・レガシィアウトバック, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi Autobakku) in some markets), and an Impreza-derived off-road themed hatchback, the Outback Sport (1994–2011).

Most versions of the Outback wagon and Outback Sport have had all-wheel drive as standard equipment.

History

The original Outback station wagon was derived from the wagon variant of the second-generation Subaru Legacy. The first-generation Legacy, which made its debut in 1989, did not receive the cosmetic and suspension modifications to create an Outback version, although Subaru offered an Outdoor option package for the 1994 model year Legacy L all-wheel drive model, which added a compressed air strut height adjustable suspension, a luggage rack, a skidplate, and mud flaps.

Earlier, a raised-roof "Touring Wagon" variant had been offered on the preceding Subaru Leone for the 1988 and 1989 model years. Subaru also sold a raised-roof variant (chassis code BF) of the first-generation Legacy wagon outside the United States. North American Legacy wagons were only offered as the flat-roof variant (chassis code BJ) until a special "GT" model was marketed for the 1994 model year.

The second-generation Legacy wagon became the first generation of the Outback crossover series, called the "Legacy Grand Wagon" in Japan in 1995, and the "Legacy Outback" in most other markets. Compared to the existing Legacy wagon, the "Outback" variant added partial protective plastic side body cladding for off-road conditions, used a raised roof, and would later raise the suspension to provide additional ground clearance. It was introduced at the 1994 New York Auto Show. Aside from other small differences in trim, the Outback shares almost all of its components with the Legacy donor model.

When launched in Australia in 1996, the name "Legacy Outback" was shortened to "Outback", followed in other markets afterwards. In the United States, Subaru also retailed the Legacy SUS sedan between the 1997 and 2007 model years, with similar modifications to distinguish it from the equivalent Legacy model sedan. The Impreza Outback Sport was introduced at the 1996 New York Auto Show, but for the 1997 model year, the donor model names were dropped, and the cars were known as the "Outback" and "Outback Sport".

Common 2004 Subaru Outback problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2004 Subaru Outback, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Melting Dashboards:
    • Owners of 2005-2009 Legacy and Outback models have reported that their dashboards melt into a sticky, shiny goo when exposed to heat and humidity. This issue poses a significant concern as it can interfere with the driver's view and potentially impact the vehicle's safety.
  2. Recalled Takata Airbags:
    • A large number of Subaru vehicles, including some Outback models, have been recalled due to dangerous airbag inflators made by Takata. These inflators have been associated with the risk of shrapnel deployment, leading to serious safety hazards for vehicle occupants.
  3. Excessive Oil Consumption:
    • Some Subaru engines, including those in the 2004 Outback, have been reported to excessively burn through oil. Owners have noted the need to add a significant amount of oil between scheduled changes, which is not considered normal for a well-functioning engine.
  4. Leaky Head Gaskets:
    • Subaru has faced issues with leaky head gaskets in their 4-cylinder engines for years, including the 2004 Outback model. Repairing this problem is costly as it often requires the engine to be removed, causing inconvenience and financial burden for owners.

These problems highlight significant concerns with the 2004 Subaru Outback, impacting both the functionality and safety of the vehicle. Owners experiencing these issues should consider seeking professional assistance to address these common problems effectively.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-10-17
  • VIN: 4S3BH675947
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: AUTOZONE SOLD ME (VIA WARRANTY EXCHANGE) AFTERMARKET BRAKE PADS THAT SUPPOSEDLY WERE THE SAME PART #D929 AS THE BRAKE PADS AUTOZONE HAD PREVIOUSLY SOLD ME AND WAS REPLACING UNDER WARRANTY. HOWEVER, THE BRAKE PADS THAT THEY PROVIDED TO ME TODAY AS WARRANTY REPLACEMENTS WERE TOO LARGE FOR THE BRAKE CALIPER AND WOULD BE UNSAFE IF INSTALLED AND FORCED TO FIT IN THE CALIPER. SPECIFICALLY, THE INNER SHOULDER DIMENSION ON THESE PADS IS TOO LARGE TO FIT PROPERLY IN THE CALIPER. I VERIFIED THE PROBLEM BY PURCHASING BRAKE PADS FROM A DIFFERENT AUTO SUPPLY STORE AND INSTALLING THEM WITH NO DIFFICULTY. THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY, BECAUSE IT HAPPENED DURING BRAKE PAD REPLACEMENT.

(Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Subaru Baja vehicles manufactured January 22, 2003, to July 21, 2004, 2004-2005 Impreza vehicles manufactured January 28, 2003, to May 31, 2005, 2003-2008 Subaru Legacy vehicles manufactured January 22, 2003, to May 2, 2008, 2003-2008 Subaru Outback vehicles manufactured February 18, 2003, to May 5, 2008, and 2005 Saab 9-2x vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to March 17, 2005. The affected vehicles are equipped with a passenger side frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture upon its deployment.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Subaru will notify their owners and General Motors will notify Saab owners. Dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The Subaru recall began on June 17, 2015. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783. The Saab recall began on July 27, 2015. Owners of Saab vehicles may call 1-800-955-9007. Subaru's number for this recall is WQR-53. Note: The recall completely supersedes recall 14V-399 (WQL-48) and partially supersedes recall 14V-763 (WQP-51) in that model year 2004 through 2005 Subaru Impreza and model year 2005 Saab 9-2x vehicles are now only part of this campaign. Note: On December 18, 2015 Subaru informed NHTSA of an expansion of this recall to include certain model year 2003-2004 Subaru Baja, 2003-2008 Subaru Legacy and 2003-2008 Subaru Outback vehicles.

Negative 2004 Subaru Outback car reviews

  1. Dedrick Kuhn 2024-11-22

I am very satisfied with the car's overall performance, as it is a versatile vehicle that can tow jet skis, haul cargo, and navigate through snow with ease. However, I have experienced an issue with the idle on the manual transmission model. Unfortunately, the car was out of service for six days within the first two weeks of ownership due to a fuel injector replacement. Despite this, the idle and hesitation problems persisted. I am disappointed with both the dealer and Subaru's lack of effort in resolving this issue.

  2. Chance Stanton 2024-09-14

I really like my 2002 Outback Wagon, but I have been experiencing some issues with the brakes. I drive a 5-speed standard, mostly on the interstate for 100 miles at a time. Unfortunately, I had to replace the brakes twice, once at 14,000 miles and again at 25,000 miles. Additionally, it seems that the head gasket needs to be replaced between 40,000 and 60,000 miles, which is quite unusual for a vehicle. Typically, this problem doesn't occur until 100,000 miles. I would love to hear from other Outback owners if they have experienced similar issues.

The functionality of the Outback is great! It can haul bikes, move friends, and load up my band gear with ease. Plus, it's a practical urban car that's easy to park. However, I've had some issues with the VDC failing five times, all during snow falls in the Sierras. It's frustrating because that's when I need it the most! Additionally, the McIntosh has failed twice and the radio reception is horrible. It's disappointing that the two reasons I upgraded to the Outback are both failing. I'm starting to wonder if it was worth the extra money.

I strongly advise against purchasing this car due to my personal experience with it. Despite its reputation for reliability, I experienced an alternator failure at 60k miles, multiple battery replacements, brakes that wore out too soon, and engine bearing failure at 90k miles. Despite being driven on the highway and maintained better than required by Subaru, this car did not meet my expectations. I recommend considering other options for your vehicle needs.

Looking for a commuter car that can take you anywhere? Look no further! While this car has some drawbacks, such as a subpar sound system and heavy weight, it still gets the job done. Keep in mind that the ride quality may not be the smoothest, but it's a reliable car that can handle a lot. Additionally, the heated seats are a nice touch, even if they don't stay on for very long. Overall, this car is a great option for those in need of a reliable commuter car.The Subaru Legacy has a unique scent that you will always remember when driving it. It's not oil, AC, or clutch fluid, just a distinct Subaru smell. Additionally, the oversized headlamps and daytime running lights are not very efficient and can drain power from the engine. However, the AWD capability is impressive and allows for driving on all terrains. Overall, if you're looking for a reliable car, you may want to consider a Toyota. For instance, I've owned a 99 Toyota 4Runner since it was brand new and it's still running strong with 325k all original miles on the engine and transmission. I hope this review was helpful to you. Thank you for reading!

Positive 2004 Subaru Outback car reviews

  1. Hermann Nitzsche 2025-01-04

I've owned my Outback for just over a year now and it's been a reliable companion. As someone who uses their car for newspaper delivery, it's important that my vehicle is up to the task, and the Outback certainly delivers. I drive anywhere from 60 to 150 miles every day and it's held up well. While I did have a minor issue with the water pump and a torn CV boot, these were quickly resolved and didn't cause any major problems. In fact, I've been so impressed with the Outback that I've even added some performance parts to enhance its capabilities. All in all, I'm very happy with my purchase and would definitely buy this car again.

  2. Albert Ratke 2025-01-01

This car has been amazing for us! It's been a workhorse, grocery getter, commuter car, and family truckster, and it still runs great! We're hoping to get 200k out of it. Plus, the exterior has held up really well. We've found it to be incredibly dependable.

  3. Shaun Purdy 2024-11-09

I'm so glad I bought this car! I needed all-wheel drive for a move up north and this car has been a great value. The AWD performance is excellent and according to Edmunds, it's also reliable. So far, the initial quality has been very good (3000 miles) and it's as quiet as our BMW 528 on the highway. While it seems a little cramped in the backseat with adults, overall I'm very pleased with my purchase!

  4. Adam Bogisich 2024-10-12

This is the third Subaru I've owned. In 57,000 mi, I've yet to have a single problem. I have separate wheels for snow tires, and I put some sticky summer tires on the stock rims for summer driving. With snow tires, this car is unstoppable in the snow! I also have a full size 4x4 pickup truck, and this car easily out- performs it even in deep snow. You'd have to be a real idiot to get this car stuck. On dry (or wet) pavement, it handles nicely, but I wish they'd offer a more powerful engine. The 6-cylinder is OK, and I get a consistent 27mpg -- no complaints since I drive it pretty hard. My next car will probably be a BMW 335xi or an Audi S5, but the Subaru has served me well.

  5. Merritt Gaylord 2024-09-17

I recently switched from a Mercedes Benz ML320 to this Subaru Legacy Outback Limited. I must say, I am thoroughly impressed with the ride quality, handling, and fuel economy. Although it is smaller in size, it has proven to be a winner in my eyes. I have only driven 1400 miles so far, but as someone who drives 20,000 miles per year, I am confident that this car will continue to exceed my expectations.
