THE DODGE SPIRIT IS A FRONT WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLE THAT USES A SOLID REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY THAT CONSISTS OF A METAL "V" SHAPED CHANNEL CROSSMEMBER WITH A TORQUE TUBE THAT RUNS THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF IT. THE TORQUE TUBE IS RIGIDLY WELDED TO END PLATES AND IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE AXLE ASSEMBLY AND CANNOT BE INDIVIDUALLY REPLACED. WE DISCOVERED THAT THE TORQUE TUBE HAD BROKEN THE WELD AT THE END PLATE AS WELL AS SNAPPING COMPLETELY IN HALF ABOUT 6" FROM THE END PLATE. THE NOISE WE HEARD WAS THIS TUBE SLAPPING UP AND DOWN IN THE "V" CHANNEL CROSSMEMBER. IT BECAME VERY APPARENT THAT THIS WAS A DANGEROUS SITUATION AND THE CAR SHOULD NOT BE DRIVEN. WE IMMEDIATELY CONTACTED THE DODGE DEALER AS WELL AS CUSTOMER SERVICE FOR DODGE. CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS NO HELP AS THERE IS NO RECALL FOR THIS ITEM. THE DODGE DEALER WASN'T MUCH HELP EITHER. THEY EXAMINED THE CAR AND DETERMINED THAT THE REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY NEEDED REPLACING (OBVIOUSLY) AND WOULD COST NEARLY $800 FOR THE PART. WE LIVE IN ARIZONA WHERE THE ENVIRONMENT IS DRY AND NON-CORROSIVE. THERE IS NO RUST ON THIS CAR, NOR ARE THERE SIGNS OF ABUSE OR DAMAGE. THE WELD FAILED ON THIS MAJOR COMPONENT. THE REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY SHOULD LAST THE LIFETIME OF THE CAR! SUCH A MAROF FAILURE AT SUCH EXTREMELY LOW MILEAGE IS UNREASONABLE, TO SAY NOTHING OF THE FACT THAT SUDDEN POWER LOSS TO THE DRIVE WHEELS AND HARSH DOWNSHIFTING, SLOWING THE CAR UNEXPECTEDLY IS DANGEROUS. Hey there! I'm excited to share with you my experience with this amazing car that I got for a steal! I purchased it from a lovely lady who unfortunately couldn't afford to fix it. It had 205,000 miles on it and was in pretty rough shape, but luckily parts were easy to find and reasonably priced. This car has a 3.0L V-6 built by Mitsubishi, which is an incredibly powerful and reliable engine. After fixing all the problems, this car now ROCKS! It has plenty of room for anything you need, seats 5-6 people comfortably, and has a big trunk for speakers. It handles well for its size and even better with bigger wheels (16s-17s). It stops well and accelerates like a dream with the V-6. I hope you get a chance to experience this amazing car for yourself!

I love this car! It has a sentimental value to me as I got it from my brother after he went to jail. Despite having around 100,000 miles, it was in great shape and very sturdy. I learned everything about cars from this one, what to do and what not to do. It was amazing on gas and took me from Linesville, Pa. to Columbus Ohio and back (roughly 461 miles total) on just one tank of gas. It even survived rough dirt roads without any issues. The only thing that stopped this baby was a White minivan rear-ending me at a red light. I wish I still had this car as it holds a special place in my heart.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I recently had to say goodbye to my car, a Spirit that I bought with 17,600 miles on it. Over the years, I put an average of 40,000 miles a year on it, and it was a blast to drive in town and on the interstate. I did have a few issues with the leaky head gasket with the 2.5, but I replaced it twice, and only one CV joint ever went out. With almost 250K miles, I unfortunately had an overheating issue that I couldn't resolve, but I still think it was one of the best cars I've ever owned. I attribute its long life to highway miles and Castrol Syntec. Thanks for listening!

I own a 1994 Dodge Spirit V6 model and it is one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. I got into an accident with it a couple of years ago that should have thrown me from the car, but the way the car is built I stayed in my seat the whole time. It still runs to this day and I just love the way it runs.

Hard to find a more rounded car for the $$. I own a 91 Plymouth Acclaim and a 94 Spririt. They have the usual issues around 100k such as the head gasket and the paint on the 94 (white) is flaking off. I get 22mpg average which is not too bad. The local salvage yard is full of these cars so parts are almost free. The car has a surprising amount of room and decent build quality. I've had both cars head gaskets replaced around 90k. I bought a rebuilt head for the 94 for <200.00. The ignition switch broke in both cars but is a really easy fix. I found a car at the salvage yard with a new switch and keys in it. Slapped it in and off I went. I keep spares on hand from salvaged cars.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my Dodge Spirits. Over the past 3 years, I've purchased two used ones. This particular one is a V6, automatic, basic model with 83k miles. I'm happy to report that it has been trouble-free for the past 13,000 miles and was a great value at $3,000.00.

I purchased this vehicle as a second owner with 31,302 miles. Since then, I have put 44,698 miles on it. While I have had some issues with the car, including three automatic transmission replacements and two front wheel bearing replacements, I have found that the power windows malfunction and the air conditioner compressor is noisy when engaged. Additionally, there have been significant issues with the idling. Overall, I would not recommend this car.

The spirit is a generally reliable car, with good V6 power, decent interior comfort, and a smooth ride. However, I had a problem with the 4 speed automatic. The unit in mine died two weeks after purchase, throwing itself into safety mode in which it will only go forward in second gear. Even after a $1200 rebuild and about 18 months, it still doesn't feel like it works correctly, occasionally searching for gears while attempting to downshift or slamming itself into first gear.

The Dodge Spirit is a great family car! While the seats may not be the most comfortable for long trips, it's incredibly fuel-efficient. The paint jobs on these cars may not be the best, but there's a simple solution - have it painted with SPF 15 paint to prevent it from falling off when exposed to the sun. Overall, I think it's a reliable and economical car. I would rate it a 7.2.
